◎佛說九色鹿經一卷

吳月氏優婆塞支謙譯

昔者，菩薩身為九色鹿；其毛九種色，其角白如雪，常在恒水邊飲食水草，常與一烏為知識。

時，水中有一溺人隨流來下，或出或沒，得著樹木，仰頭呼天：「山神、樹神、諸天龍神，何不愍傷於我？」鹿聞人聲，走到水中，語溺人言：「汝莫恐怖！汝可騎我背上，捉我兩角，我當相負出水。」

既得著岸，鹿大疲極，溺人下地，繞鹿三匝，向鹿叩頭：「乞與大家作奴供給，使令採取水草。」

鹿言：「不用汝也，且各自去，欲報恩者，莫道我在此，人貪我皮角，必來殺我。」於是，溺人受教而去。

是時，國王夫人夜于臥中夢見九色鹿，其毛九種色，其角白如雪，即託病不起。

王問夫人：「何故不起？」

答曰：「我昨夜夢見非常之鹿，其毛九種色，其角白如雪。我思得其皮作坐褥，欲得其角作拂柄，王當爲我覓之？王若不得者，我便死矣

現代漢語譯本 從前，菩薩化身為一隻九色鹿；它的毛有九種顏色，角白如雪，常在恒河邊飲水吃草，與一隻烏鴉是朋友。 當時，水中有一個溺水的人順流而下，時隱時現，抓住樹木，抬頭呼喊：『山神、樹神、各位天龍神，為何不憐憫我？』鹿聽到人聲，走到水中，對溺水的人說：『你不要害怕！你可以騎在我的背上，抓住我的兩隻角，我當揹你出水。』 到了岸邊，鹿非常疲憊，溺水的人下地，繞著鹿轉了三圈，向鹿叩頭：『我願意做您的奴僕，供您使喚，為您採集水草。』 鹿說：『我不需要你，你還是自己走吧。如果你想報恩，就不要說我在這裡，人們貪圖我的皮和角，一定會來殺我。』於是，溺水的人接受教誨離開了。 當時，國王的夫人在晚上睡覺時夢見一隻九色鹿，它的毛有九種顏色，角白如雪，於是就假裝生病不起。 國王問夫人：『你為什麼不起來？』 回答說：『我昨晚夢見一隻非常特別的鹿，它的毛有九種顏色，角白如雪。我想得到它的皮做坐墊，想得到它的角做拂塵柄，大王應當為我找到它。大王如果找不到，我就要死了。』

English version In the past, the Bodhisattva was incarnated as a nine-colored deer; its fur had nine colors, its antlers were as white as snow, and it often drank water and grazed by the Ganges River, where it was friends with a crow. At that time, a drowning person in the water was drifting downstream, sometimes appearing and sometimes disappearing, grabbing onto trees, and looking up to the sky, crying out: 'Mountain gods, tree gods, all heavenly dragons, why do you not have mercy on me?' The deer heard the human voice, walked into the water, and said to the drowning person: 'Do not be afraid! You can ride on my back, grab my two antlers, and I will carry you out of the water.' Once they reached the shore, the deer was extremely exhausted. The drowning person got off the deer's back, circled the deer three times, and kowtowed to the deer: 'I am willing to be your servant, at your disposal, and gather water and grass for you.' The deer said: 'I do not need you, you should go on your own. If you want to repay my kindness, do not say that I am here, people covet my skin and antlers, and they will surely come to kill me.' Thereupon, the drowning person accepted the teaching and left. At that time, the king's wife dreamt of a nine-colored deer while sleeping at night, its fur had nine colors, and its antlers were as white as snow, so she pretended to be sick and did not get up. The king asked his wife: 'Why do you not get up?' She replied: 'Last night I dreamt of a very special deer, its fur had nine colors, and its antlers were as white as snow. I want to get its skin to make a cushion, and I want to get its antlers to make a whisk handle. Your Majesty should find it for me. If Your Majesty cannot find it, I will die.'

王告夫人：「汝可且起，我為一國之主，何所不得？」

王即募於國中：「若有能得九色鹿者，吾當與其分國而治，即賜金缽盛滿銀粟，又賜銀缽盛滿金粟。」

於是，溺人聞王募重，心生惡念：「我說此鹿可得富貴，鹿是畜生，死活何在？」

於是，溺人即便語募人言：「我知九色鹿處。」

募人即將溺人至大王所，而白王言：「此人知九色鹿處。」

王聞此言，即大歡喜，便語溺人：「汝若能得九色鹿者，我當與汝半國，此言不虛。」

溺人答王：「我能得之。」

於是，溺人面上即生癩瘡。溺人白王：「此鹿雖是畜生，大有威神，王宜多出人眾，乃可得耳。」

王即大出軍眾，往至恒水邊。

時，烏在樹頭見王軍來，疑當殺鹿，即呼鹿曰：「知識且起！王來取汝。」

鹿故不覺，烏便下樹，踞其頭上，啄其耳言：「知識且起！王軍至矣。」

鹿方驚起，便四向顧視，見王軍眾，已繞百匝無復走地，即趣王車前。

時，王軍人即便挽弓欲射，鹿語王人：「且莫射我，自至王所，欲有所說。」

王便敕諸臣：「莫射此鹿，此是非常之鹿，或是天神。」鹿重語大王言：「且莫殺我！我有大恩在於王國

國王對夫人說：『你先起來吧，我是一國之主，有什麼得不到的？』 國王隨即在全國招募：『如果有人能捉到九色鹿，我將和他平分國家治理，並賞賜裝滿銀粟的金缽，以及裝滿金粟的銀缽。』 於是，那個溺水的人聽到國王的重賞，心生惡念：『我說這鹿可以帶來富貴，鹿不過是畜生，死活又有什麼關係呢？』 於是，溺水的人就對招募的人說：『我知道九色鹿在哪裡。』 招募的人立即把溺水的人帶到大王那裡，並對王說：『這個人知道九色鹿的所在。』 國王聽到這話，非常高興，便對溺水的人說：『如果你能捉到九色鹿，我將分給你一半的國土，此話絕不虛假。』 溺水的人回答國王：『我能捉到它。』 於是，溺水的人臉上立刻長出癩瘡。溺水的人對國王說：『這鹿雖然是畜生，卻有很大的威神，大王應該多派人馬，才能捉到它。』 國王立即派出大批軍隊，前往恒水邊。 這時，烏鴉在樹上看到國王的軍隊來了，懷疑是要殺鹿，就對鹿喊道：『朋友快起來！國王來抓你了。』 鹿仍然沒有察覺，烏鴉便飛下樹，停在鹿的頭上，啄著它的耳朵說：『朋友快起來！國王的軍隊到了。』 鹿這才驚醒，便四處張望，看到國王的軍隊，已經包圍了數百圈，沒有地方可以逃跑，就直接走向國王的車前。 這時，國王的士兵立即拉弓要射，鹿對國王的士兵說：『先別射我，我自願到國王那裡，有話要說。』 國王便命令眾臣：『不要射這鹿，這鹿非常不尋常，或許是天神。』鹿再次對大王說：『請不要殺我！我對王國有著大恩。』

The king said to his wife, 'You can get up now. I am the ruler of a country, what can't I obtain?' The king then issued a recruitment throughout the country: 'If anyone can capture the nine-colored deer, I will share the country with him and govern together, and I will also bestow a golden bowl filled with silver millet, and a silver bowl filled with golden millet.' Then, the drowned man, hearing of the king's generous reward, had an evil thought: 'I said this deer could bring wealth and honor, but the deer is just an animal, what does it matter if it lives or dies?' So, the drowned man immediately said to the recruiter, 'I know where the nine-colored deer is.' The recruiter immediately brought the drowned man to the king and reported to the king, 'This man knows the whereabouts of the nine-colored deer.' Upon hearing this, the king was very happy and said to the drowned man, 'If you can capture the nine-colored deer, I will give you half of my kingdom, this is no empty promise.' The drowned man replied to the king, 'I can capture it.' Then, the drowned man's face immediately developed sores. The drowned man said to the king, 'Although this deer is an animal, it has great divine power. Your Majesty should send more troops to capture it.' The king immediately sent a large army to the bank of the Ganges River. At this time, a crow in a tree saw the king's army coming and suspected they were going to kill the deer, so it called out to the deer, 'Friend, wake up! The king is coming to get you.' The deer still did not notice, so the crow flew down from the tree, perched on the deer's head, and pecked at its ear, saying, 'Friend, wake up! The king's army has arrived.' The deer was then startled awake and looked around. Seeing the king's army had surrounded it hundreds of times, with no place to escape, it went directly to the front of the king's chariot. At this time, the king's soldiers immediately drew their bows to shoot, but the deer said to the king's soldiers, 'Don't shoot me yet, I will go to the king myself, I have something to say.' The king then ordered his ministers, 'Do not shoot this deer, this deer is very unusual, perhaps it is a celestial being.' The deer said to the king again, 'Please do not kill me! I have done a great favor for your kingdom.'

王語鹿言：「汝有何恩？」

鹿言：「我前活王國中一人。」

鹿即長跪，重問王言：「誰道我在此耶？」

王便指示車邊癩麵人是。鹿聞王言，眼中淚出，不能自止，鹿言：「大王！此人前日溺深水中，隨流來下，或出或沒，得著樹木，仰頭呼天：『山神、樹神、諸天龍神，何不愍傷於我？』我于爾時不惜身命，自投水中負此人出，本要不相道，人無反覆，不如負水中浮木。」

王聞鹿言，甚大慚愧，責數其民語言：「汝受人重恩，云何反欲殺之？」

於是，大王即下令於國中：「自今已往，若驅逐此鹿者，吾當誅其五族。」

於是，眾鹿數千為群，皆來依附，飲食水草不侵禾稼，風雨時節五穀豐熟，人無疾病災害不生，其世太平運命化去。

佛言：「爾時九色鹿者，我身是也；爾時烏者，今阿難是；時國王者，今悅頭檀是；時王夫人者，今先陀利是；時溺人者，今調達是。調達與我世世有怨，我雖有善意向之，而故欲害我；阿難有至意，得成無上道。」

菩薩行羼提波羅蜜，忍辱如是

王語鹿說：『你有什麼恩德？』 鹿說：『我之前救活了王國中的一個人。』 鹿立刻長跪，再次問國王說：『是誰說我在這裡的？』 國王便指著車旁的癩臉人說是。鹿聽到國王的話，眼中流出眼淚，不能自已，鹿說：『大王！這個人前些日子溺在深水中，隨著水流漂下來，時而浮出水面時而沉沒，抓住樹木，仰頭呼喊上天：『山神、樹神、各位天龍神，為什麼不憐憫我？』我當時不惜自己的性命，自己跳入水中揹著這個人出來，本來想要不互相認識，人沒有反覆無常，還不如揹著水中的浮木。』 國王聽到鹿的話，非常慚愧，責備他的百姓說：『你們受了人家的重恩，為什麼反而想要殺他？』 於是，大王立刻在國中下令：『從今以後，如果驅趕這隻鹿的人，我就要誅滅他的五族。』 於是，數千隻鹿成群結隊，都來依附，吃喝水草不侵犯莊稼，風調雨順五穀豐收，人民沒有疾病災害不發生，那個時代太平，命運也隨之改變。 佛說：『當時那隻九色鹿，就是我的前身；當時那隻烏鴉，就是現在的阿難；當時的國王，就是現在的悅頭檀；當時的王夫人，就是現在的先陀利；當時溺水的人，就是現在的調達。調達與我世世代代都有怨恨，我即使有善意對待他，他仍然想要加害我；阿難有至誠的心意，最終成就了無上的道。』 菩薩修行羼提波羅蜜，忍辱就是這樣。

The king asked the deer, 'What kindness have you shown?' The deer said, 'I once saved a person in the kingdom.' The deer immediately knelt down and asked the king again, 'Who said I was here?' The king then pointed to the pockmarked man by the carriage. Upon hearing the king's words, tears streamed from the deer's eyes uncontrollably. The deer said, 'Your Majesty! This man was drowning in deep water a few days ago, drifting with the current, sometimes surfacing and sometimes sinking. He grabbed onto a tree and cried out to the heavens: 'Mountain gods, tree gods, all heavenly dragons, why do you not have mercy on me?' At that time, I did not hesitate to risk my life, jumping into the water myself to carry this man out. I originally intended not to know each other, but people are fickle, it would have been better to carry a piece of driftwood.' Upon hearing the deer's words, the king was deeply ashamed and rebuked his people, saying, 'You received great kindness from him, why do you want to kill him instead?' Then, the king immediately issued an order in the kingdom: 'From now on, if anyone drives away this deer, I will exterminate their five clans.' Thereupon, thousands of deer came in groups to rely on them, eating and drinking grass without harming the crops. The weather was favorable, and the five grains were abundant. People had no diseases, and disasters did not occur. That era was peaceful, and fate changed accordingly. The Buddha said, 'At that time, the nine-colored deer was my past life; the crow at that time was the present Ananda; the king at that time was the present Yue Tou Tan; the queen at that time was the present Xian Tuo Li; the person who drowned at that time was the present Devadatta. Devadatta has had enmity with me for generations. Even though I have good intentions towards him, he still wants to harm me. Ananda has a sincere intention and ultimately achieved the supreme path.' The Bodhisattva practices the Paramita of Kshanti, patience is like this.
