English version Taisho Tripitaka Volume 03, No. 0188, The Sutra of the Different Origins of the Bodhisattva
The Sutra of the Different Origins of the Bodhisattva, one scroll
Translated by Layman Nie Daozhen of the Western Jin Dynasty
When Shakyamuni Buddha was a human in his past life, he was in the country of Fuluoduo, and he did good deeds in every life. After countless lives, he finally became a Buddha.
When the Buddha was a Bodhisattva, he was named Mana, and he lived in the mountains, wearing deerskin clothes.
At that time, he entered a city named Bomohe, and the king was named Qiye. The Bodhisattva saw people in the city hurrying, so he asked a passerby on the road, 'Why is everyone in the city so hurried today?' The passerby replied, 'The Buddha is coming today!'
When the Bodhisattva heard that the Buddha was coming, he was very happy in his heart and thought, 'Today when I see the Buddha coming, I will ask the Buddha for what I desire in my heart.'
After a while, there was a woman named Juyi, holding a water bottle and seven flowers, called Utpala.
The Bodhisattva followed and called out to her, 'Elder sister, please stop!' Juyi stopped and waited for him. The Bodhisattva said, 'Please give me the Utpala flowers in your hand.' Juyi said, 'Today the Buddha is coming, the king is in the bathhouse, and I am going to offer the flowers to the king, so I cannot give them to you!' The Bodhisattva said, 'I will buy your flowers for one hundred coins.' Juyi said, 'I cannot give you the flowers!' The Bodhisattva said, 'You can go and pick more yourself.' Juyi said, 'I cannot!' The Bodhisattva said again, 'I will buy your flowers for five hundred coins.' Juyi thought to herself, 'These flowers are only worth two or three coins, but now he is offering five hundred coins to buy them.' So she gave the Bodhisattva five Utpala flowers and kept two for herself.
The Bodhisattva took out the money he was carrying, which happened to be five hundred, and gave it all to her. Then they each went their own way.
Juyi thought to herself, 'This Taoist, wearing deerskin clothes, actually had five hundred silver coins, and he used them all to buy flowers. I suspect he is not an ordinary person.'
Then he called out, 『Man, man! Please stop!』 The Bodhisattva stopped and waited for him. Kujiyi said, 『If you tell me the truth, I will give you the flowers; otherwise, I will take your flowers away.』 The Bodhisattva said, 『I bought the flowers, from one hundred coins to five hundred coins, why do you want to take my flowers?』 Kujiyi said, 『These flowers are the royal family's flowers, I have the power to take them from you.』 The Bodhisattva then truthfully told him, 『I heard that the Buddha will come today, and I want to offer the flowers to him, to ask the Buddha for the desires in my heart.』 Kujiyi said, 『Great! I wish in my next life to be your wife, and in your next life, whether you are good or bad, I will be your wife. I must let the Buddha know my heart.』 The Bodhisattva said, 『Okay!』 Then he took two flowers from his hand and gave them to the Bodhisattva to offer to the Buddha. Kujiyi said, 『Women cannot go to the front, I hope to entrust the flowers to you.』 The Bodhisattva accepted them, and they parted ways. Soon the Buddha arrived, and from the king down to the common people, all scattered various kinds of flowers on the Buddha's head, and the flowers all fell to the ground. The Bodhisattva held five flowers and scattered them on the Buddha's head, and the flowers all remained in the air, arranged in rows upwards, as if they had taken root and did not fall to the ground; the Bodhisattva held Kujiyi's flowers and scattered them on the Buddha's head, and the flowers also remained in the air, arranged in rows upwards, on both shoulders without falling to the ground. The Buddha knew the Bodhisattva's sincerity. The Buddha said, 『Let your heart's desires be fulfilled. After ninety kalpas, the kalpa will be named Balo, and you will become Sakyamuni Buddha.』 The Bodhisattva heard the Buddha's words and was very happy in his heart. He then spread out his hair for the Buddha to step on, and so he leaped in front of the Buddha. The Buddha used his divine power to catch him, and he rose four zhang and nine chi from the ground, without any support, and came down from above. The Buddha also said, 『Let you attain enlightenment and save the world in your next life, and you shall also become a Buddha like me.』
。」
At that time, this Buddha was a previous Buddha, named Tíhéjiélúo Buddha! After the Buddha's Nirvana, the Bodhisattva returned to the mountains. After his life ended, he ascended to the second Trayastrimsha Heaven, where all the gods protected him. When his life in heaven ended, he descended again to the country of Kushi-nagara, becoming a flying emperor, ruling the four continents. After his life ended, he ascended again to the second Trayastrimsha Heaven, becoming Indra. This cycle repeated, for a total of thirty-six times as Indra and eighty-four thousand lifetimes as a flying emperor. After his life ended in this way, he ascended to the fourth Tushita Heaven, and then descended to the country of Kapilavastu. The country of Kapilavastu is the center of heaven and earth; the place where the Buddha is born cannot be a remote or other country, as that would cause the earth to tilt. The king of Kapilavastu was benevolent and virtuous, so (the Bodhisattva) entered the womb of the king's wife. Because (the Bodhisattva) was pure, he did not come into contact with impure things. The ministers and neighboring countries that could be affiliated with Kapilavastu, upon hearing that the king's wife was pregnant, all came to congratulate the king and pay respects to the queen. The prince, from within the womb, saw the people outside as if seeing them through a thin veil. When the people outside paid their respects, the prince, from within the womb, pushed them away with his hand. The reason for pushing them away was that he did not want to disturb the people of the world. When the queen was carrying the prince, the gods in heaven would bring heavenly food every day and place it before her. The queen did not know where the food came from. She could no longer eat the royal family's food, which was bitter and spicy. The prince was born at midnight on the eighth day of the fourth month, emerging from his mother's right side. He took seven steps, lifting his feet four inches high, without touching the ground. Then he raised his right hand and said, 'Above and below the heavens, I am the most honored!' The Four Heavenly Kings immediately descended to pay their respects, picked up the prince, placed him on a golden seat, and bathed him with warm water. The king, the queen, and the attendants were all amazed.
。
When the prince was born, the thirty-three heavens above and the sixteen hells below, the eight directions around, and the twelve thousand worlds all became bright, and the heavens and earth shook. Thus, he was born as a child. His wet nurse handed him to his mother in a woolen cloth bag, and his mother then breastfed and raised him herself, naming him Siddhartha. Siddhartha was born with thirty-two extraordinary marks on his body. The next day, the king and queen discussed, 'My son's birth is different from others. There is a great Taoist master in the country, over a hundred years old, who is skilled in physiognomy, named Ayi. Why don't we go together and have him examine the prince?' The queen said, 'Excellent!' The king and queen went together to the Taoist master's place. The king offered a bag of gold and a bag of silver to the Taoist master, but the Taoist master did not accept the gold and silver. He then opened the woolen cloth bag and looked at the prince. The prince had thirty-two extraordinary marks, and divine light was manifested. The Taoist master immediately wept with sorrow. The king and queen asked, 'Taoist master! Will there be anything bad for my son? We have come today specifically to have you examine the prince, wanting to know his good and bad fortune. Why are you weeping with sorrow?' The Taoist master said, 'Yesterday, the heavens and earth shook, precisely for the prince! I am saddened by my old age, and that I am about to pass away. I regret not being able to wait for this person, and regret not being able to hear this person's teachings, which is why I weep with sorrow.' Upon hearing the Taoist master's words, the king selected famous singers and dancers from the country for the prince, choosing four thousand people. He had a thousand people perform in shifts, singing and dancing day and night without rest. Also, to protect the prince, the king, knowing the Taoist master's skill in physiognomy, had the palace, gates, and walls rebuilt for the prince, making them all strong and sturdy. If one wanted to open them, the sound of the gatekeepers would be heard forty miles away. When the prince was born, a servant in the palace was also born, and a white horse was also born. The servant was named Cheni, and the horse was named Jian De. The king ordered Cheni to serve the prince's horse, to care for it, and for the prince to ride it. Seven days after the prince was born, his mother passed away.
When the crown prince was ten years old, he said to the Great King, 'As the crown prince, I have never gone out for a tour.' The King said, 'Excellent!' He immediately ordered the officials to accompany the crown prince on a tour. The crown prince rode in a carriage and went out of the east city gate. The second Heaven King, Shakra, immediately transformed into a sick person in front of him, with a large belly, swollen body, and withered muscles, leaning against the wall to rest. The crown prince asked his charioteer, 'Who is this person?' The charioteer replied, 'This is a sick person.' The crown prince asked, 'Why is he sick?' The charioteer replied, 'This person did evil in his past life. In this life, he is a human who does not control his diet and has irregular sleep patterns, so he became sick.' The crown prince said, 'I am the son of the king! If I do not control my diet and have irregular sleep patterns, will I also get this disease?' The charioteer said, 'Everyone will get this disease.' The crown prince immediately turned the carriage around and returned, feeling worried and unhappy, thinking, 'Everyone in the world will get sick, and now I will also get sick. I will not eat anymore.' The Great King regretted letting the crown prince go out for a tour. He closed the palace gates again and did not let him go out. He also arranged for singers and dancers to entertain him. The crown prince became even more worried and could not eat. After a long time, he gradually recovered. After several years, the crown prince again reported to the Great King, 'Now I have been confined in the palace for a long time. I would like to go out for a tour again.' The Great King could not bear to go against the crown prince's wishes and agreed. He ordered the country in advance, 'When the crown prince goes out, do not let sick people or unclean things appear on the sides of the road.' He ordered the crown prince to ride in a carriage again and go out of the south city gate. Heaven King Shakra transformed again into a feverish patient, with disheveled hair and face, covered in feces and urine, lying on it, his life hanging by a thread. The crown prince asked the charioteer, 'Who is this person?' The charioteer replied, 'This person did evil in his past life, did not restrain himself, did not control his diet, and had irregular sleep patterns, so he got this disease, and his life is in danger.'
English version: The prince said, 'I also eat and drink without moderation, and my sleeping and waking habits are irregular. Could I also get this disease?' The driver said, 'Everyone gets sick.' Upon hearing this, the prince immediately turned the chariot around and returned to the palace. The prince became worried again and refused to eat. The king said, 'My attendants, I had already ordered the country not to let sick or unclean people approach the prince. Why did you let a sick person see the prince?' Later, they arranged singing and dancing for the prince, but he was still unhappy and did not find it enjoyable. After a while, he felt a little better. After getting a little better, several years passed, and the prince told the king again, 'Staying in the palace is not enjoyable, and I want to go out for a tour again.' The king said, 'Every time you go out, you come back worried and unhappy, and you don't want to eat. Why do you want to go out again?' The prince said, 'I won't be like that again.' The king then ordered the country, 'The prince wants to go out for a tour, do not let sick or unclean people be seen on the road.' The prince rode in his chariot and went out through the west gate. The Heavenly King Sakra transformed himself into an old man, thin and hunched over, walking with a cane. The prince asked the driver, 'Who is that person?' The driver said, 'That is an old man.' The prince said, 'Why is he called an old man?' The driver said, 'People are born on earth, and from the age of one until the end, their lifespan is about to end, their strength is weak, and they cannot eat, so they are called old men.' The prince said, 'Will I also become old?' The driver said, 'Everyone becomes old.' The prince said, 'Turn the chariot around and go back, I will not live long either.' Then he became very worried again, 'Everyone will become old and weak, unable to eat, and eventually die. Why should I live long in this world?' He refused to eat again, and lowered his head in worry. The king again comforted and advised him, 'I only have you as my son, and I will hand over the country to you in the future. Why do you always worry and refuse to eat after going out?' The king held a grand feast to make him happy, and after that, the prince gradually resolved his worries.
After a long time, the prince again reported to the king, 'I wish to go out for a stroll.' The king replied, 'Every time you go out, you always become worried and unhappy, refusing to eat, becoming emaciated, and returning from the brink of death. Why do you want to go out again?' The prince said, 'I am growing older and will eventually age.' The king again sent someone to take the prince out through the north gate. The heavenly king Sakra transformed himself into a funeral carriage. Men and women from inside and outside the city, holding banners and weeping, followed the carriage in mourning. The prince asked his charioteer, 'What are those sounds?' The charioteer said, 'They are cries of mourning.' The prince asked, 'Why are there cries of mourning?' The charioteer said, 'Someone has died.' The prince asked, 'What is death?' The charioteer said, 'People live on earth, their lives hanging by a thread from heaven. Lifespans are long or short, hence the term death. After death, one knows nothing more, the body completely dissipates, and there is no end to it. The family grieves and follows in mourning.' The prince asked, 'Will I also die?' The charioteer said, 'Everyone will eventually return to death.' The prince said, 'I cannot live forever between heaven and earth; I too will die.' So he turned the carriage around and returned. The king asked the charioteer, 'Why did the prince return so quickly?' The attendants reported, 'The prince went out for a stroll and saw a funeral carriage on the road. He became unhappy, so he returned quickly.' The king said, 'I do not want the prince to go out for a stroll anymore.' When the prince was twenty years old, the king wanted to find a wife for him. The prince said, 'I will not marry.' The king, for the sake of the prince, selected women from the entire country, choosing hundreds of thousands of women. He had the prince look at them one by one, but none pleased him. Finally, there was a woman named Kujui. The prince said, 'I want to marry this woman.' The king then married her to the prince. The woman who was married to the prince was someone who, in her past life, could sell flowers to the Bodhisattva. Her name in her past life was Kujui, and she continues to be called Kujui in this life.
The prince said to his wife, 'We two share the same bed and pillow. I wish to have a beautiful flower placed between us for us to admire together. Would that be good?' His wife said, 'A flower can be obtained.' So she took a flower and placed it in the middle, and the couple lay down with the flower between them. The wife's intention was to get close to the prince, but the prince said to his wife, 'If you come close to me, you will surely press this flower. This flower has juice, which will flow out and stain the bedsheets.' His wife then moved away from him. After a long time, the prince again said to his wife, 'We two share the same bed and pillow. I wish to have a good piece of wool cloth placed between us for us to admire together. Wouldn't that be good?' The wife said, 'Wool cloth can be obtained.' So she took a piece of wool cloth and placed it in the middle. The wife's intention was to get physically close to the prince, but the prince said, 'If you come close to me, you will surely stain the wool cloth with sweat and dirt.' His wife then moved away, not daring to be too intimate with the prince, suspecting him, and constantly following him whether he sat or walked. At midnight, the Four Heavenly Kings came down from the skylight and called to the prince, 'The time has come, you can leave.' The prince said, 'I want to leave, but I cannot.' The Four Heavenly Kings then caused the dancers to fall asleep on the drums, and they knew nothing more. His wife fell asleep, and the prince slowly supported himself on the bed, got up, and looked at his wife, fearing that she would notice. The prince then got off the bed and left. He slowly called his servant, Chariot, who was born on the same day as him, and ordered him to prepare the white horse, Kanthaka, in the courtyard. Chariot prepared the horse, and the prince mounted it, wanting to leave. Fearing the sound of the gate, he hesitated in the courtyard. When the prince's horse walked, the sound of its hooves could often be heard for twenty miles, because the sound of the gate could be heard for forty miles, so the prince dared not open the gate. The Four Heavenly Kings then ordered the ghosts and spirits to hold the horse's feet, and they went over the roof and out of the city, arriving at the king's farm and stopping under a tree. The next day, the king did not know where the prince was, and the palace was in turmoil. The king said, 'My son has never gone out to travel, he must be at the farm.'
The king then went to the tenant's dwelling himself and saw the prince sitting under a tree in the distance. The sunlight was about to shine on the prince, but the tree bent its branches and leaves to fan him, preventing the sunlight from reaching him. The king was fearful and uneasy. He dismounted and bowed to the prince. The prince also bowed to the king and said, 'As your son, I have never traveled. Today, I have just gone out, and you are already chasing after me. My horse and servant will follow soon. I hope Your Majesty will return to the palace. I will return myself in a few days.' The king then mounted his horse and returned, telling his wife, Kuli, 'The prince is now at the tenant's place and will return in a few days.' The prince sat under the tree, concentrating deeply on contemplating the events of past lives. From the thirty-third heaven down to the sixteenth hell, he found no place acceptable. He saw people plowing in the fields, turning up worms from the soil. Some were injured, some died, and crows followed to eat them. The prince sighed, 'People live on earth, and after death, they will enter hell. Isn't that painful! I cannot live in this world for long.' He then mounted his horse and left. After traveling for a dozen miles, he saw a man named Ben Shi. Ben Shi was a great deity among the ghosts and gods, known for his rigid and fierce nature. He held a bow in his left hand, an arrow in his right, and a sharp sword at his waist, standing in the middle of the road. There were three paths where Ben Shi stood: one was the path of heaven, one was the path of humans, and one was the path of hell for evil people. The prince saw him from afar and felt displeased. He directly urged his horse forward. Ben Shi immediately became frightened and trembled. He unsheathed his sword, held his bow and arrow, and stepped aside. The prince asked, 'Which path can I take?' Ben Shi pointed to the path of heaven, saying, 'This path can be taken.' After traveling for dozens of miles, the prince encountered a hunter. The prince said, 'I would like to borrow something from you, is that possible?' The hunter said, 'Whatever you want is possible.' The prince said, 'I want your deerskin.' The hunter gave the deerskin to the prince, and the prince gave him valuable items in return.
The prince traveled for tens of miles, stopped his horse, and said to Charioteer: 'You should return from here.' Charioteer said: 'I follow the Great One, I cannot return.' The prince said: 'Go back and tell the Great King and my wife, saying that I wish to enter the mountains to cultivate the Way, and will never return for the rest of my life.' The prince took off his jeweled crown and the plain, precious clothes he wore, and gave them to Charioteer, who received them weeping; his white horse knelt down on its front legs, shedding tears, and licked the prince's feet. Charioteer led the horse back on foot, Charioteer also wept, and the white horse also wept, looking back at the prince, who took a deer skin and put it on, wanting to change his attire. The wife looked forward to the prince's return every day, but instead saw the empty horse return, and weeping, she jumped down from the palace, went forward and hugged the horse's neck, asking Charioteer: 'Where is the prince?' Charioteer said: 'The prince asked me to go back and tell the Great King and his wife, saying that he has entered the mountains to cultivate the Way, and will never return for the rest of his life.' Kuyi said: 'How unfortunate I am! It's like losing my husband, where should I seek him? My husband, oh my husband! Is he in heaven, on earth, or in the human realm? I should go and find him!' She said to the white horse: 'The prince went out with you, but you have returned empty?' All those around were moved. The king heard that the prince had left, and tears streamed down his face, he said to Kuyi: 'People are born on this earth, and all must eventually return to death, my son is learning the Way to transcend the world, isn't that a good thing!' He wanted to comfort Kuyi with this, but the king also missed the prince constantly. The king immediately invited the virtuous and wise men of the country, and got several thousand people, the king then selected from several thousand people, and got several hundred people, then from several hundred people, he got several tens of people, and from several tens of people, he selected five people.
English version: The king said to the five men: 'Do you find it so pleasant, staying at home day and night, holding your children and grandchildren? I have a son who has never traveled, who knows nothing of the world's good and evil. Once he leaves me, going far away into famous mountains, traversing deep forests, crossing streams, who will know of his cold, heat, hunger, and thirst? Perhaps there will be good or bad fortune involving tigers and wolves, who will witness it? Now, each of you five men, send one son to seek my son. Whoever finds him shall serve him. My son will never return. If any of you five abandon my son midway, I will destroy your entire family.' The five men immediately sent their sons. The five sons sought the prince and found him in the famous mountains, and then followed and served him. Several years passed like this, and the prince never asked where the five men came from. The places the prince went were all deep forests. The five men felt worried and distressed. They said to each other: 'This is the king's son, he does not practice the way, he is just a madman. He walks without choosing a path. We five cannot follow him. If we return, the king will destroy our families. It is better to stop here.' The five men all said: 'Agreed!' The place where the five men stopped was above a large body of water. There were various strange fruits on the water. There was always something to eat in winter and summer, so they were not hungry. The five men stayed there, and the prince did not ask about it. The prince then went into the deep mountains where no one was, took tall grass, and sat upright under a tree, thinking with all his heart: 'Today my muscles, bones, tendons, and marrow will wither and rot. If I cannot become a Buddha here, I will not rise.' The prince then attained the first dhyana, then the second dhyana, then the third dhyana, then the fourth dhyana. Then, in one night, he attained Asutja, knowing where he came from, his countless past lives. On the second night, he attained the second Asutja, gaining the heavenly eye, able to see everything clearly, knowing the cycle of life and death, and the paths of good and evil. At dawn, he became a Buddha. The Buddha thought to himself: 'I have become a Buddha! This is difficult to attain, difficult to know, and difficult to understand.'
Having attained Buddhahood, he then arrived at the place of the dragon's water, the dragon's name was Wenlin. By the water where Wenlin dwelled, there was a tree. The Buddha then sat upright and thought to himself: 'In countless past kalpas, the Buddha named Tihokara said that I would become Sakyamuni Buddha. Today, I have attained Buddhahood! I have sought Buddhahood for countless kalpas, and only now have I attained it! The alms I have given for countless kalpas, in order to enter the Six Paramitas, I have not forgotten my merits, and now I have obtained them all.' As soon as the Buddha thought this, he entered the Dhyana Paramita. The Buddha sat in meditation under the tree by the water, and his light shone into the water, illuminating the place where the dragon lived. The dragon, seeing the Buddha's light, was greatly startled, and its fur and scales stood on end. Wenlin the dragon had previously seen three Buddhas: one named Krakucchanda Buddha, one named Kanakamuni Buddha, and one named Kasyapa Buddha. They had all sat under the tree, and their light had shone into the water, illuminating the place where the dragon lived. The dragon saw the Buddha's light as before, like the light of the three Buddhas, and thought that there were no more Buddhas in the world. The dragon was overjoyed, came out of the water, and looked around. It saw the Buddha sitting under the tree, with the thirty-two marks of a great man, his body golden, as upright as the sun and moon. The Buddha's thirty-two marks, seen from afar, were like flowers blooming on a tree. Wenlin the dragon then approached the Buddha, circumambulated him seven times, and with its seven heads, covered the Buddha. The dragon came out of the water to serve the Buddha, and then there was wind and rain for seven days. The Buddha meditated for seven days, unmoving, unshaking, without breathing. The Buddha's mind was infinitely joyful. After seven days, the wind and rain stopped. Because the Buddha had just attained enlightenment, he was so joyful that he did not eat for seven days. The dragon, seeing the Buddha's joy, also did not eat for seven days while serving the Buddha.
After seven days, the Buddha became enlightened on his own. The dragon then transformed into a young Brahmin, knelt with palms together, and asked the Buddha, 'Are you not cold? Are you not hot? Are you not bothered by insects, moths, mosquitoes, and horseflies?' The Buddha replied, 'The scriptures say: 'It is pleasant for a person to be in a quiet place.' What I heard in the past, I now experience, and seeing it with my own eyes is even more pleasant; living in the world without being disturbed by others is also pleasant; not disturbing the people of the world, as well as flying and crawling creatures, is also pleasant; transcending birth and death, no longer being a person of the world, no longer being a celestial being, is also pleasant; being without anger and lust is also pleasant; attaining the path of Buddha's Nirvana in the world is also pleasant.' The dragon said to the Buddha, 'From now on, I take refuge in the Buddha, I take refuge in the Dharma.' The Buddha said to the dragon, 'Later there will be many Arhats and Bhikkhu Sangha, you should also take refuge in them again.' Among the animals, Wenlin was the first to take refuge in the Buddha. The Buddha's spiritual powers were vast, and all the gods came and bowed their heads in reverence. The Buddha was alone in a quiet place, thinking in his heart: 'All beings in the world are pitiful, I want to teach them, who should I teach first? My king sent five people to serve me, these five people cannot understand me, now they are by the water, I should teach them first.' The Buddha then returned along the same path. The five people saw the Buddha coming from afar, not knowing who it was, and said to each other, 'When this person comes, be sure not to bow to him, be sure not to speak to him.' The five people all said, 'Okay!' The Buddha heard what the five people were saying from afar. When the Buddha arrived, the five people were all frightened and went forward to bow to the Buddha. The Buddha said, 'You five, why do you not have firm hearts? Just now you were saying to each other, 'When this person comes, be sure not to bow to him,' why are you bowing now?' The five people dared not speak again. The Buddha took the five people away together, and after walking for several days, the Buddha touched the hair on the heads of the five people, and they all became Shramanas.

There were three Taoists, each teaching disciples. One Taoist taught five hundred disciples; one Taoist taught three hundred disciples; and one Taoist taught two hundred disciples, totaling one thousand disciples. The Buddha, with five monks, arrived at the place of the three Taoists. All the disciples were overjoyed and followed the Buddha away. The Buddha led the disciples, traveling to various countries. When they arrived at the city gates, the bells and drums sounded by themselves, and the zithers and lutes played on their own. The sick were healed, the old became young, the blind regained sight, the deaf regained hearing, the hunchbacked straightened up, and the lame could walk. All kinds of beasts harmoniously cried out; the heavens flew down, scattering flowers and making music above. The Buddha's light illuminated countless heavens, and he governed three thousand suns and moons, and twelve thousand worlds, all belonging to him. The Buddha, before and after, taught disciples numbering tens of millions of billions, and they all attained enlightenment and transcended the world.
