Records of Miraculous Experiences and Merits from Reciting the Diamond Sutra

In the past, during the Liang Dynasty, there was a monk named Master Yan at Zhaoti Temple. When he was a novice, a fortune-teller told him, 'Master, although you are very intelligent and wise, it's a pity that you have a short-lived appearance. What can be done?' Master Yan, upon hearing this, consulted virtuous monks to discuss how to cultivate blessings and what merits to accumulate to prolong his life. The virtuous monks said, 'Among the sacred words of Buddhism, upholding and reciting the Vajra Prajna Sutra (Diamond Sutra) has the greatest merit and will surely prolong your life.' Master Yan then followed the advice and immediately went into the mountains to uphold and recite the Prajna Sutra. After six years, he came out and met the previous fortune-teller again. The fortune-teller said, 'What merits have you cultivated in recent years, Dharma Master, that your appearance of longevity has changed so much?' Master Yan then explained in detail how he was told he had a short life and thus went into the mountains to uphold and recite the Vajra Prajna Sutra, without doing any other deeds. The fortune-teller said, 'Incredible! Because of this merit, you have become a great virtuous one.' The Dharma Master lived past one hundred years before passing away peacefully.

During the Liang Dynasty, there was a monk named Master Zang at Kaisan Temple, known for his lectures. At that time, there was a person named Master Yin, who was skilled in divination and fortune-telling. Upon seeing Master Zang, he said, 'Master Zang, you must be intelligent to give lectures.' (Master Yin) randomly selected a scroll from the sutra collection, intending to seek longevity, and obtained the Vajra Prajna Sutra. Master Zang recited and upheld it in his room for three years without coming out. Later, upon seeing Master Yin, he happily said, 'Master, what method have you used to change your appearance? My fortune-telling for you is no longer accurate.' Master Zang said, 'Layman, your fortune-telling was very accurate. At that time, I indeed encountered difficulties, but I was able to overcome them because of the power of upholding the Vajra Prajna Sutra.' Master Yin said, 'The merit and karmic reward are truly incredible. Now your lifespan should be over a hundred years.' Later, it indeed happened as he had said.

During the Sui Dynasty, there was a Brahmin monk named Dharma Master Zang, who could uphold the Vajra Sutra's incantations and eliminate all evils. A young monk followed him to learn and mastered the incantations. After several years, (the young monk thought) 'I should be able to subdue (the deities), right?' So he went to the riverside and saw a temple of a Hu deity (non-Chinese deity), sat there, and intended to subdue it with incantations, but he offended the deity and was killed. Dharma Master Zang, upon hearing of his disciple's death, was very angry and personally went to the deity's temple.

【English Translation】 English version: Sitting and reciting mantras was the cause of their death. At that time, there was a monk in the same temple who constantly upheld the Vajra Prajna Sutra (Diamond Wisdom Sutra). Hearing that the Tibetan teacher (a monk from Tibet) and his disciples had been beaten to death by a spirit, he came to the spirit's temple. He also sat in the temple reciting the Prajna Sutra. At night, he heard a very loud and rapid wind. After a while, he saw a thing, its shape strange, magnificent, peculiar, and extremely terrifying, with various descriptions and eyes like lightning. The monk sat upright, reciting the Vajra Sutra (Diamond Sutra) without ceasing, and without fear. The spirit came before him, withdrawing all its power, kneeling on its right knee, palms together in reverence, listening to the recitation of the sutra. After the recitation, the monk asked the spirit, 'What deity are you, Danapati (dān yuè, benefactor)? You came fiercely and rapidly at first, but now you are silent and motionless.' The spirit replied, 'I am a barbarian spirit (hú shén, spirit of foreign origin) of this palace, because of my strong nature and rebellious views. Seeing the master practicing the inconceivable Mahayana Sutra (Great Vehicle Sutra), I prostrate myself to listen to the sutra. Since you are able to have such faith and reverence, why were the previous two monks who recited mantras beaten to death?' The spirit said, 'Those two monks could not uphold the Mahayana Sutra. When they saw me coming, they cursed and reviled me, reciting evil mantras. I did not submit. When these two monks saw my appearance, they were afraid and died themselves, and it was not that I deliberately violated and killed them.' The people nearby, knowing that this monk had entered the spirit's temple to stay overnight, feared that he would be beaten to death like the previous two monks. In the morning, everyone went together to the spirit's temple to see and welcome him, and saw that he was safe and sound. They asked the monk about the cause of the events, and the monk told everyone all the details. Because of this, many people resolved to uphold the Vajra Prajna Sutra. In the eleventh year of the Kaihuang era, Zhao Wenchang, an official of the Taifu Temple, died, with only one supreme wish. His family did not dare to immediately prepare the body for burial. However, Zhao Wenchang went to Yama-raja (King Yama). Yama-raja asked Zhao Wenchang, 'What meritorious deeds have you done since birth?' Zhao Wenchang said, 'I have no other merits, only that I constantly recite the Vajra Prajna Sutra.' Yama-raja, upon hearing this, put his palms together in reverence and praised, 'Excellent! Upholding the Vajra Prajna, its merit is greatest and inconceivable.' He immediately told the attendant, 'Go and investigate again, do not make a mistake in the future.' Before long, the attendant had indeed made a mistake, and had not heard of it. Yama-raja then told Zhao Wenchang, 'You may go to the sutra repository to retrieve the Vajra Prajna Sutra, and have someone guide you.' Zhao Wenchang went southwest to the sutra repository, where he saw dozens of large halls, very exquisite and magnificent. The sutras within...

Moreover, the golden-axled treasure scripture (precious scriptures) was extensively adorned and wonderfully beautiful, with decorations so magnificent that words cannot describe them. Chang then closed his eyes intently and said, 'Great Virtue, I am most afraid that this scripture is not the 'Prajna Sutra'.' He requested that person to exchange it, but that person refused. Chang then opened it and saw that it was indeed the 'Diamond Prajna Sutra'. He took the scripture to the king, had the executioner stand to the west, and Chang stood to the east, reciting the 'Diamond Prajna Sutra' once, and understanding it thoroughly. The king then released him and admonished him, saying, 'Chang, you must uphold this scripture, and truly do not abandon or forget it.' He still sent a person to guide Chang out the door, and he saw Emperor Wu of Zhou imprisoned in the room east of the door, calling out, 'You are a person from my country, temporarily come here, and need to talk to you.' Chang immediately paid respects to Emperor Wu. Emperor Wu said, 'Do you recognize me?' Chang said, 'Your subject once served as a Fushe Wei, attending to Your Majesty.' Emperor Wu happily said, 'You are my old subordinate. You can return home and speak to the current emperor on my behalf, that all my sins have been settled, except for the matter of destroying the Buddhist Dharma, which has not yet been concluded. At that time, it was because of the slander of Wei Yuansong (a person's name) that I was imprisoned here.' Chang asked Emperor Wu, 'Wei Yuansong is a person outside the Three Realms, not under the jurisdiction of King Yama, therefore he cannot be pursued.' Emperor Wu said, 'You return home and beg the current emperor for a little merit on my behalf, to relieve my suffering, and then I dare to hope to conclude this matter.' Chang returned home and actually revived, and after five days, his illness gradually lessened. He reported this matter in detail to Emperor Wen. Emperor Wen, upon learning of this, issued an edict to the monks and priests of all temples in the country to observe a three-day fast and perform rituals for Emperor Wu of Zhou, reciting the 'Diamond Prajna Sutra', and it was also recorded in the historical records. There was a person in Suizhou who died in the first year of the Zhenguan era and revived after three days, saying, 'When I first died, I was stopped by someone, and together with several companions, I arrived at King Yama's place. Among them was a monk, and King Yama, upon seeing him, first called him and asked, 'Master, what merits have you cultivated in your life?' The monk replied, 'I have only recited the 'Diamond Prajna Paramita Sutra'.' King Yama, upon hearing this, immediately rose and praised with palms together, saying, 'Good! Since you uphold the 'Diamond Prajna Paramita Sutra', you should ascend to heaven, why were you mistakenly brought here?' Before King Yama finished speaking, he saw heavenly garments descending, guiding the monk to ascend to heaven.' King Yama then sat down again and continued to ask, 'People of Suizhou, you have already from the past...'

【English Translation】 English version: A disciple took a knife and struck at the waist. Then three more blows followed, drawing blood. With the fourth strike, the knife stopped in mid-air, neither hitting nor leaving. The knife remained there for about the time it takes to eat two meals. The monk awoke and saw the disciple kneeling, holding the knife with both hands, silently. The monk asked, 'Why do you harbor such malice?' The disciple knelt down and explained their intentions in detail. The monk said, 'Perhaps this is my karma.' He then retrieved the scripture tube, intending to read the scripture. There were three knife marks on his waist, all cut through, reaching the scripture axis. When people examined the monk's waist, there were only three red marks, and the three layers of clothing were not cut through or damaged. Is this not due to the divine power of the Vajra Prajna Sutra (Diamond Sutra)?

In the past, the monk Lingyou of Wenguo Temple in Chang'an suddenly died. After seven days, he met King Pingdeng (the King of Judgment in the underworld). King Pingdeng asked the monk, 'What scriptures did you practice in your lifetime?' Lingyou replied, 'I recited the Vajra Sutra.' The King then put his palms together and requested him to recite it. After a while, the King asked again, 'Although the monk can recite this scripture, he is missing a gatha (verse in a Buddhist scripture).' Lingyou replied to the King, 'This humble monk only recites according to the text and does not know which gatha is missing.' The King said, 'The monk's lifespan is already exhausted, but I will grant you ten more years of life. This scripture is on a stone tablet west of Haozhou City, with the true version, which can be spread throughout the world.' The monk was resurrected and explained the cause of the matter in detail.

Chen Zhao, a clerk (Kongmu Dian, an official title) of Hanzhou, died for two days and then revived. He explained in detail: 'When I first arrived in the underworld, the judge asked, 'You killed forty-seven cows because of the affairs of Minister Liu. Chen Zhao, why did you take one of his cows?' Chen Zhao denied taking it. After a while, a person came out, calling himself Jia, and brought a cow's head, making Chen Zhao realize that he could not hide it. So he asked the judge how he could avoid this sin. The judge asked, 'What merits did you have in your lifetime?' Chen Zhao replied, 'I often recite the Vajra Sutra.' Before he finished speaking, the scripture came from the sky, and he was released and lived for another eighteen years.'

Layman Gou (Gou Jushi, a Buddhist practitioner at home) was happy to do good deeds and specialized in reciting the Vajra Sutra, so he made a vow to write the Vajra Sutra in the air with a pen in the northwest village of Xinfan County. That place never got wet whenever it rained. At first, no one knew, but the villagers grazed cattle there, and then...

【English Translation】 English version:

Someone was taking shelter from the rain at a certain place. Later, a Hu monk (a monk from the Western Regions) passed by and, upon seeing it, told the villagers: 'This is a Jingtan (sutra altar), where sutras appear in the sky. On fasting days, Huabao (transformed treasures) will appear. They often manifest.' This Jingtan is located thirty li (a Chinese unit of distance) northwest of the county seat and still exists today.

In the past, Wang Tuo killed countless people in his life. He then resolved to single-mindedly recite the Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra (Diamond Sutra) ten thousand times. When he had recited it five thousand times, he suddenly saw dozens of ghosts coming towards him one day at noon, saying: 'King Yama has a warrant to arrest you. You should stop reciting the sutra for now.' Wang Tuo immediately began to recite, causing the ghosts to come from behind. Furthermore, a ghost messenger arrived on horseback and informed the ghosts, saying: 'King Yama has ordered that the person reciting the sutra should be spared for now.' Thus, Wang Tuo escaped death and lived to the age of ninety-eight before passing away.

In the past, Wang Chuo was a judicial officer in Tianshui Prefecture under Xue Ju, who was causing unrest by killing soldiers. When it was Wang Chuo's turn to be beheaded, the knife broke into pieces. Then, the strongman Song Luo was ordered to use a knife to behead him, but the knife also broke into pieces. Xue Ju was surprised and said: 'What magic do you possess?' Wang Chuo replied: 'I have been reciting the Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra (Diamond Sutra) since I was young. It must be the power of the sutra.' Xue Ju then released Wang Chuo. Wang Chuo was afraid and hid in a toilet. While reciting the sutra, a light appeared in the toilet, and the bandits followed the light to the toilet. Upon seeing him, they asked: 'Who is it?' The person in the toilet replied: 'It is Wang Chuo, the one who could not be killed by the knife.' The bandits said: 'You don't need to hide; everyone in the army knows.' They urged him to go home. Thus, he was able to escape this disaster.

In the past, there was a man named Zhu Shiheng, who was by nature crude and evil, and did not respect the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). He served as the Left Puye (a high-ranking official title) of the Liang Kingdom. His wife often delighted in doing good deeds and single-mindedly recited the Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra (Diamond Sutra). When Zhu Shiheng was not at home, his wife was reciting the Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra (Diamond Sutra) with great concentration. Zhu Shiheng returned from outside, and upon seeing this, he snatched the sutra scroll from his wife's hand and threw it into the fire. When the fire went out, the sutra was not damaged. Thereupon, the husband and wife together collected the sutra scroll and repented before the Buddha.

In the past, Cui Shanchong served as a judge in Xie Prefecture. He encountered a rebellion, and the prefect was killed. Cui Shanchong led more than twenty men, carrying bows and swords, and fled to Kunming City. At night, they did not know where to go. Cui Shanchong told the soldiers: 'Sincerely recite the name of the Buddha.' Cui Shanchong himself recited the Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra (Diamond Sutra). He let the horse walk as it pleased, and suddenly saw a torch leading the way in front. After walking several li (a Chinese unit of distance), the fire went out, and there was no light. Thus, they reached Kunming City. All of this was due to the power of the sutra.

【English Translation】 English version: In the past, Tang Yan was a petty official in Qi County, Zizhou. He often recited the 'Diamond Sutra' (Vajra Sutra). Because he was careless in his work, he was escorted by officials to Suizhou, and the county sent people to arrest him. Tang Yan heard a voice in the air saying, 'Tang Yan, hurry away!' Tang Yan looked up and saw a foreign monk (a monk from the Western Regions). Tang Yan immediately leaned against a tree and sincerely recited the sutra. Dozens of pursuers were face to face but could not see him, and he escaped this difficulty. Wei Xu was a man from Qin. He often recited the 'Diamond Sutra'. The messengers of the underworld tried to capture him three times but failed. King Yama (Yama) ordered the messengers to report, 'Let him go for now.' Li Yan was a man from Nanyang Prefecture. He served as the county lieutenant of Dezhou. He recited the 'Diamond Sutra' throughout his life. Every time he recited the sutra, divine light appeared. In the past, Madam Dou suffered from a headache at night. She asked a maid to fetch fire from the kitchen, but the maid said there was no fire. Suddenly, she saw a torch in front of the steps. She went up the steps, and it was as bright as day. The madam's headache was immediately cured. Everyone diligently recited the sutra. These are all due to the power of constantly reciting the 'Diamond Sutra'! There are many more instances of those who recited the 'Diamond Sutra' receiving miraculous responses. Due to the length, they will not be recorded one by one. Based on the above examples, if someone were to use the seven treasures (seven treasures) filling the three thousand great thousand worlds (three thousand great thousand worlds) for almsgiving, it would not be as meritorious as spreading this sutra. If someone writes the 'Diamond Sutra', upholds, recites, and also has others write and spread it, it is like lighting one lamp, and hundreds of thousands of lamps can illuminate the darkness, never extinguishing. If one can copy this sutra and post it on the walls of a temple, the merit is immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable. Emperor Kaiyuan (Emperor Kaiyuan) praises the merit of the 'Diamond Sutra': One scroll of the 'Diamond Sutra' is as heavy as Mount Sumeru (Mount Sumeru), so my emperor especially upholds it. All eighty-four thousand Dharma gates can be understood, and the wisdom eye can foresee the thoughts of others. The songs talked about recently are all old tunes, listen to the wonderful words of the 'Vajra Prajna Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Sutra). Emperor Kaiyuan personally annotated it, sincerely prostrate and pay homage, do not have doubts. This sutra can remove all suffering, and those who make the aspiration will know in advance with the heavenly eye. Do not be led astray by the six thieves of ignorance (six thieves of ignorance), be muddled and confused, clinging to foolishness all day long. The World-Honored One (World-Honored One) entered Nirvana (Nirvana) countless kalpas (kalpa) ago, past hundreds of billions of asamkhyas (asamkhya). Kings and ministers transmit it.

【English Translation】 English version Sacred Teachings: Our Emperor reverently believes in the rare Dharma of the world. Every month, he observes the ten fasting days, ceasing slaughter, extensively cultivating good deeds, and supporting monks and nuns. He diligently recites the Buddha's name for viviparous and oviparous beings, treating all with courageous diligence and great compassion. He detests the five desires and pleasures that fill the palace, understanding that the appearance of the body is illusory and fragile. Even the emperor of a country can awaken; how much more should ordinary people not contemplate? In the past, Tisà (name of a person) was a king who abandoned his concubines to seek the subtle Dharma. He diligently practiced the Mahayana teachings through asceticism, not hesitating to be a servant. The current emperor is wiser than all nations, able to foresee thoughts and actions. His civil and military prowess spreads throughout the world, bringing peace to the people and stability to the borders. He personally annotates the profound and subtle meaning of the Diamond Sutra, which all sentient beings accept and uphold. The Dharma-protecting deities wholeheartedly perform good deeds, praised by the heavens, with everything in its proper place. A white elephant comes galloping, paying homage to Shòu Sì (name of a temple), surrounded by layers of precious chariots and banners. A bright monk leads with incense and flowers, while immortals ride cranes, flying in the sky. He transforms beings in the Eight Difficulties (Bā Nán, Buddhist term referring to eight unfortunate conditions where one cannot hear the Dharma) to be reborn in the Pure Land, turning the Five Turbidities (Wǔ Zhuó, Buddhist term referring to the turbidity of the age, views, afflictions, beings, and life) into a Seven-Jeweled Pond. May Kāiyuán (era name of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty) be eternally established, until kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, with Māra (Mówáng, Buddhist term referring to demons that obstruct practice) and heretics all subdued and converted. May the sacred teachings be passed down for ten thousand years, like the wind at the end of a kalpa unable to move the heavenly robes. It is only because beings have great merit that they can encounter an era when the Buddhas reappear in the world. The subtle principles of the Diamond Sutra are truly difficult to express in words; I have elucidated the essence of all scriptures. The Buddha spread gold all over the earth, wanting to buy Prince Qítuó's (name of a person) garden. The Eight Classes of Gods and Demons follow the Buddha, with the Yàn Tǎ (name of a pagoda) and Dragon Palace filled with the Buddha's teachings. The Jeta tree (Qíshù, name of a tree) extends its branches to carry the birds' songs, and below is a spring with golden sands for washing feet. The Buddha begged for food in Shèwèi Guó (name of a country), extensively guiding beings to cultivate fields of merit. At that time, the World-Honored One had no self-image, and Subhuti (Xūpútí, name of a person, a disciple of the Buddha) gazed upon the Buddha, receiving these teachings. Attaining the Four Fruits (Sì Guǒ, Buddhist term referring to the four stages of enlightenment in the Hearer Vehicle) and Six Supernatural Powers (Liù Tōng, Buddhist term referring to six types of supernormal abilities) is of the highest quality; enjoying happiness in the Dragon Palace is to be born in the heavens. The Wheel-Turning Sage King (Zhuǎnlún Shèngwáng, Buddhist term referring to an ideal ruler possessing an invincible wheel) is in the position of an immortal, and so is the Divine Martial Emperor (Shénwǔ Huángdì, a complimentary term for the emperor). It is also said that in the past, he was King Kālī (Gēlì Wáng, name of a person), who was dismembered and reborn in the heavens. King Śibi (Shīpí Wáng, name of a person) sacrificed his body to save a dove from a hawk, and the body of an Arhat (Āluóhàn, Buddhist term referring to a liberated being who has extinguished all afflictions) surpasses three thousand great chiliocosms. The beings of Jambudvipa (Yánfú Tí, Buddhist term referring to the continent we live on) are attached to the burning house (Huǒzhái, Buddhist term referring to the world filled with afflictions and suffering); our Emperor guides them out, enabling them to be reborn in the heavens.

【English Translation】 English version All sentient beings are like my own children; I have compassion for all people. If one can attain the fruit of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提果, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment), one will also form karmic connections with all the Buddhas. Through hundreds of kalpas and thousands of lifetimes, one will not regress, and the accumulated merits will be immeasurable and boundless. Not only will temples and monasteries be protected, but also the ten directions of the world will be the same. These are all profound and subtle meanings of Vajrayana; how dare I, as a disciple, transmit them falsely?

Whoever wishes to recite the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra (金剛般若波羅蜜經), must first invoke the names of the Eight Great Vajras, and then recite the sutra with utmost sincerity. These Eight Vajras will naturally always protect those who uphold the sutra.

First, I invoke Qing Chuzai Jin』gang (青除災金剛, Blue Calamity-Removing Vajra), who can eliminate all past calamities and transgressions of all sentient beings, causing them to completely disappear (in charge of the great ocean).

Second, I invoke Pidu Jin』gang (僻毒金剛, Averting Poison Vajra), who can eliminate all hot poison sickness and suffering of all sentient beings (in charge of averting poison and calamities).

Third, I invoke Huang Suiqiu Jin』gang (黃隨求金剛, Yellow Wish-Fulfilling Vajra), who can make all the wishes of all sentient beings come true, so that all desires are fulfilled (in charge of sprinkling merits).

Fourth, I invoke Bai Jingshui Jin』gang (白凈水金剛, White Pure Water Vajra), who can eliminate all the heat and suffering of all sentient beings, causing them to be completely eliminated (in charge of all treasures).

Fifth, I invoke Chisheng Jin』gang (赤聲金剛, Red Sound Vajra), who can illuminate all sentient beings, enabling them to obtain light and see the Buddha (in charge of generating wind).

Sixth, I invoke Dingzaichu Jin』gang (定災除金剛, Calamity-Fixing and Removing Vajra), who can eliminate the suffering of the three calamities and eight difficulties of all sentient beings (in charge of lapis lazuli treasures).

Seventh, I invoke Zixian Jin』gang (紫賢金剛, Purple Wise Vajra), who can enable all sentient beings to open their minds and awaken, and generate Bodhicitta (in charge of the firm storehouse).

A luo bo zhe na

If ordinary people sincerely recite this mantra, it is like reciting all the Tripitaka scriptures in the world once.

How does the Sanskrit sound in this scripture ultimately reach the other shore? May the Buddha reveal the subtle secrets and widely expound the great Dharma wheel for all beings.

Written by Zhai Fengda, a commoner, on the ninth day of the fourth month in the year Wuchen, the eighth year of Tianfu in the Tang Dynasty. This scripture praises the verified merits and records its dissemination. Later, it is for the benefit of believers, deceased spirits, present parents, and the entire village. Like spring grass, sins are like autumn seedlings, and they will surely come together to initiate a Buddhist assembly.
