Verses of Dedication

Again, with supreme merit, I adorn and dedicate to the Holy Sovereign of the Great Tang Dynasty. I humbly pray that the Emperor's life be long and prosperous, that the golden wheel (symbol of rule) of the Emperor and the Shen wheel (meaning unclear) turn in unison, that the Shun sun (sun of the Yao and Shun era, a metaphor for peace and prosperity) and the Buddha sun (the light of the Buddha's teachings) shine together, surpassing all previous emperors, and maintaining the country's prosperity for countless kalpas. May the Crown Prince (Qian Xing) be as clear and calm as the Shao Sea, as stable and elevated as a bedrock, and guard the four directions like a city.

Therefore, with supreme merit, I adorn and dedicate to the six monks present. I humbly pray that they long receive the Emperor's grace, become the National Preceptors who perform the initiation ceremony for the Emperor, forever guard the court, and praise the wise king's rule and teachings.

Again, with supreme merit, I adorn and dedicate to the Chief Abbot (a monastic official). I humbly pray that his wisdom be as lofty as a mountain peak, his virtue as deep and vast as the ocean, his life as long as pine and bamboo, and his blessings extend far and wide. Even if he long receives the Emperor's favor, may he forever promote the compassionate spirit, may his good reputation fill the world, and may his elegant example be passed down in the degenerate age.

Again, with supreme merit, I adorn and dedicate to the Honorable Minister. I humbly pray that his blessings be as eternal as a mountain, his life as boundless as a deity. May his achievements be higher than the cloud mountains, and his virtue deeper than the vast sea. When he goes out, may he hold the banner to pacify all directions; when he enters the court, may he sit in the hall, and all officials take him as an example. When the New Year arrives, may he forever maintain the country's prosperity. May his life be as long as pine and bamboo, and his lifespan as eternal as a kalpa stone.

Again, with supreme blessings, I adorn and dedicate to the Grand Master. I humbly pray that his form be like the earth, enduring for thousands of years, and that his blessings be like mountains and rivers, lasting for ten thousand years and remaining eternally stable. Then, may he spread his beautiful reputation in the capital, soar like a bird in the clouds, and spread his elegant reputation in the court, like a fish washing its scales in the Han River.

Again, with supreme merit, I adorn and dedicate to the two Attendants, An and Yao. I humbly pray that they build a pavilion as high as the Jade Terrace outside the heavens, and fly a purple canopy in the clouds. May their lives be as long as the heavens, and their blessings as far as the earth. May they be assured of peace and stability when they leave the capital, and may they have purity and auspiciousness in all directions.

Again, with supreme merit, I adorn and dedicate to the Minister's son, hoping that he can inherit the favor of thousands of generations and forever enjoy the glory of ten thousand generations. May he be complete in loyalty and filial piety, and may his noble family be passed down through generations.

Again, with supreme merit, I adorn and dedicate to the professors of the Buddhist Order. I humbly pray that their glory and wealth continue to increase.

【English Translation】 English version New incense named Xiabu. Entering the faith, seated on the Emperor's throne, leading the monastic order. May all beings ascend according to their respective categories, and may the precious raft (a metaphor for the Dharma, which can help beings escape the sea of suffering) be eternally bestowed in the sea of suffering. Secondly, with supreme good deeds, using adornment to make offerings to the laws of the Shakya's gate (Buddhism), etc. May their physical appearance and strength be further strengthened, and their lifespan extend like the colorful clouds. May they forever serve as a ferry and bridge in the sea of suffering, and guard as a barrier of the Dharma. Secondly, with supreme blessings, using adornment to make offerings to the Duke Dudu and others. May their lives be long, with the sun and moon alternating, and may blessings and celebrations shine upon each other, as long as heaven and earth. Secondly, with supreme blessings, using adornment to make offerings to the Chief of the Tribal Departments and others. May their blessings and prosperity always be received with joy, their glory be renewed daily, their reputation spread like colorful clouds, and the city gods add splendor because of it. May they be loyal and devoted, and may the tribal officials be pure and upright. Secondly, with supreme blessings, using adornment to make offerings to the Venerable Elders and Great Virtues. May they long impart the teachings of the images, support and protect the city of Dharma, forever illuminate the lamp of compassion, and serve as the guiding principles of the Buddhist temples. Secondly, with supreme good deeds, using adornment to make offerings to the Dharma Generals and Great Virtues. May their mountain of wisdom stand tall and upright, the water of virtue be clear and pure, the branches of meditation be lush, the flowers of enlightenment bloom, the fragrance of precepts permeate, and the pearl of wisdom shine brightly. Secondly, with supreme blessings, using adornment to make offerings to the Bhikkhunis and Great Virtues. May their four supports (the four supports of a monk: robes made of discarded cloth, begging for food, sitting under a tree, and using rotten medicine) always be fulfilled, and may they be diligent and focused on the six perfections (generosity, morality, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom). May the tree of intention always be evergreen, the lamp of the heart forever shine, the water of eight merits remove defilements and disasters, and the seven pure and wonderful flowers adorn the Dharma body. Secondly, with supreme blessings, using adornment to make offerings to the officials and fathers. May their lives be as long as pine and cypress trees, and their blessings as vast as rivers and lakes, for ten thousand years and a thousand autumns, without wind or change. Secondly, with supreme blessings, using adornment to make offerings to the fathers. May they understand a thousand things upon hearing one, and attain the Great Dharani (the wisdom of comprehensively remembering and retaining all Dharmas without forgetting). May their sins and defilements be eliminated day by day, and their merits and good seeds grow continuously. May they also receive celebrations in spring and autumn, and may the cold and heat be favorable, maintaining wealth and honor for a thousand years, and manifesting auspiciousness for countless eons. Secondly, with supreme blessings, using adornment to make offerings to the Monk Li and others. Because I, so-and-so (referring to oneself), have long received your teachings and wasted time. I regret not having fully followed your instructions during my lifetime, and I am ashamed to ascend the Dharma seat after death. Therefore, after much deliberation, I offer the objects of praise and dedication for transference of merit. May your spirit travel to Nayuan (Buddhist temple), admire enlightenment, and seek the truth.
