【English Translation】 English version: The Sutra of Transformation Text and Pictures of Mahāmaudgalyāyana Saving His Mother from the Underworld
On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, the gates of heaven open, and the gates of hell also open. The suffering in the three evil realms is temporarily alleviated. Numerous monks pray, and on this day, the Dharma-protecting deities, the Eight Classes of Dragons and Devas, all come to teach. Adding blessings for those in this life and transferring merit for the deceased to be reborn in a better place, therefore, there is the Ullambana Festival, offering various delicacies to the Three Jewels, relying on the power of the masses to first relieve the suffering of those hanging upside down. In the past, when the Buddha was in the world, Maudgalyāyana, when he was a layman before leaving home, was named Rolo Bu (Maudgalyāyana's lay name). He deeply believed in the Three Jewels and revered the Mahayana Dharma. Rolo Bu wanted to go to other countries to do business, so he distributed his wealth, asking his mother to set up a vegetarian feast at home to offer to the Buddha, entertain the monks, and give alms to those who came to beg. After Rolo Bu left, his mother developed a miserly heart and secretly hid all the distributed wealth. Her son returned home after finishing his business in less than ten days. The mother told her son that she had prepared the vegetarian meal and cultivated blessings according to his wishes. In reality, she deceived both ordinary people and sages, so after her death, she fell into the Avici Hell (the lowest level of the eight great hells, the uninterrupted hell) to suffer. After Rolo Bu performed the three circumambulations, he went to the Buddhist gate to become a monk. Relying on the good roots of past lives, he attained the Arhat fruit (Arhat, a saint who has cut off all afflictions and entered Nirvana) upon hearing the Dharma. He immediately used his divine eye to search for his compassionate mother, but he could not find her in the six realms of reincarnation. Maudgalyāyana sadly reported to the World Honored One: 'World Honored One, where is my compassionate mother now enjoying happiness?' At this time, the World Honored One told Maudgalyāyana: 'Your mother has already fallen into the Avici Hell and is suffering all kinds of hardships. Although you have attained the holy fruit, what can you do? Unless the monks of the ten directions together liberate her, only with the power of the masses can she be saved.' Therefore, the Buddha compassionately opened this door of convenience, and the establishment of the Ullambana Festival is for this matter.
Since Rolo Bu's parents passed away, He performed three circumambulations and also performed sacrificial rites. Hearing Buddhist music but not feeling happy, his face was haggard, Eating delicacies did not feel sweet, heartbroken and exhausted. Hearing that the Tathagata is in Mrigadava (the place where Shakyamuni Buddha first turned the wheel of Dharma after enlightenment), All humans and devas need not worry. I now want to study the Way and seek the Tathagata, Going to the Twin...

【English Translation】 English version Lin Asks the Buddha At that time, the Buddha strolled leisurely, bowing to the feet of the Upadhyaya (referring to the Buddha). The Dharma protectors on the left and right were Shakra (Indra) and Brahma, and the Four Heavenly Kings and General Samjaya (Dharma protectors) stood in the east and west. The 'Swastika' (auspicious Buddhist symbol) on the Buddha's chest shone like crystal, and the halo behind his head resembled a bright moon. To know the scene above the hundreds of treasures and thousands of flowers is like the magnificent five-colored clouds on the horizon. This disciple is a foolish mortal, living in the five defilements (referring to a world full of various afflictions and sufferings), unable to abandon greed and hatred. Only because of the heavy sins in my life, my kind mother has fallen into hell to suffer. I fear that impermanence will come quickly, and I will sink in the sea of suffering, experiencing the suffering of birth and death. May the Buddha have compassion and save this disciple, so that I can focus on learning the Dharma and repay the kindness of my parents. The World Honored One heard what Luo Bu (a person's name) said, knowing that he was upright and not evil. Counting on the fingers, first discuss the truth in words, and then hear that there should be no seven obscurations (referring to obstacles in practice). Even if the accumulated wealth is higher than the clouds, it is not as good as forming a connection with others to temporarily leave home to practice. It's like a blind turtle encountering a floating log (a metaphor for an extremely rare opportunity), and like a lotus flower emerging from the great water (a metaphor for purity appearing in impurity). Losing one's life is like being in a burning house, difficult to escape, and the vast sea of suffering is boundless. Only because sentient beings have discriminating minds, the Tathagata established the three vehicles (a metaphor for different methods of practice). The Buddha called Ananda (the Buddha's disciple) to shave his head, and the clothes on his body immediately transformed into a kasaya (monk's robe). He immediately attained the state of Arhat, and then received the Pratimoksha (precepts). Luo Bu was in front of the Buddha at that time, and incense smoke rose from the golden furnace. Six kinds of precious trees shook the heaven and earth, and four kinds of lotus flowers showed a pure scene. Various brocades were used to decorate the bed, and countless banners fluttered in the sky. The Buddha personally said: 'My brother Maudgalyayana (the Buddha's disciple)', known as the greatly powerful Maudgalyayana.
At that time, Maudgalyayana attained the state of Arhat under the twin Sala trees. Why is this so? According to the 'Poor Son' chapter of the Lotus Sutra, first give him the corresponding value, and then let him remove the dung. This is the principle. First attain the state of Arhat, and then one should learn the Buddha's path. Look at the place where Maudgalyayana meditated in the deep mountains.
Maudgalyayana shaved off his beard and hair, and immediately entered the deep mountains. In a secluded and quiet place, where there was no one, he began to contemplate emptiness and meditate. Meditating on emptiness, knowing good and evil, subduing the deluded mind, dwelling in the true mind, and not being attached to anything. Facing the clear mirror, the mind is like still water, unmoving and unshaken.

【English Translation】 English version 『The right foot must still press on the right foot』
Sit upright on a flat rock, with the tongue touching the upper palate. Contemplate that all white bones are empty, and the breath flows smoothly without obstruction.
At that time, the herd of deer stopped their calls in the forest, approaching the clear pool and gazing at the sea. In the courtyard illuminated by the bright moon, the wisdom eye listens to the Dharma, sitting in Chan meditation under the green pines of the green mountains. The sea air at the edge of the sky has endless changes, and the green mountains beyond the border look like pavilions. The autumn wind rustles through the forest, and the fallen yellow leaves float on the water. Maudgalyayana (Maudgalyayana, a disciple of the Buddha known for his supernatural powers) sits in meditation in the realm of emptiness, verifying the mind from within and without, gradually cultivating. Penetrating the realm of the Sravakas (those who learn by hearing the teachings), dwelling in a place where one can gaze into the distance, freely entering and leaving the mountains.
Maudgalyayana emerges from Samadhi (meditative absorption), swiftly displaying his supernatural powers. Coming like a lightning flash, going like a gust of wind. The cry of the sea goose pierces the clouds, and the hawk escapes from the net. The mist and haze in the pool appear emerald green, and the clear sky makes the distant road appear red. Having obtained freedom in supernatural powers, he throws his bowl and soars into the sky. In an instant, he ascends to the Brahma Heaven Palace.
Maudgalyayana arrives at the heavenly court in an instant, his ears only hearing the sound of drums and music. Half of the red building is reflected in the golden palace, and the green windows are entirely like the imperial palace. He knocks on the door three or five times with his Khakkhara (a Buddhist monk's staff), and unknowingly tears well up in his chest. The elder comes out as if to speak to him, joining his palms and first discussing the virtues of loyalty and filial piety. (Maudgalyayana) opens his mouth and asks: 『Does the elder still recognize me? I am a person from Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the world we live in). From a young age, I suffered the loss of both parents, and his family is very wealthy, with many children and grandchildren. Lonely and without any other path, my loving mother is named Qingti (Qingti). My father's name is Fuxiang (Fuxiang), and he did many things to cultivate fields of merit in his life. After death, he should be born in this heaven, and can enjoy a luxurious life together with his wealthy direct descendants. Seeing these scenes makes one feel happy and cheerful, and the sound of bells and drums indicates elegant music. The sound of the zither is also melodious and vast, and the sorrowful nurturing grace cannot be forgotten for a long time. The kindness of breastfeeding is hard to forget, are you well after our separation? Recently, I came here to seek and visit.』 The elder felt sadness in his heart upon hearing these words. Thinking back in his heart, he hesitated to speak, 『When the disciple still had a breath in Jambudvipa, I did not know that I already had a son who had left home (become a monk).』

English version Monk, don't blame me for questioning you so persistently. There are many kinds of human relationships in the world. At first glance, your words seem unusual. It's a little difficult to calm your breath. There are many people with the same name in the secular world, and hundreds with similar appearances. Carefully examining your appearance, woven together like silk fabrics, I just can't seem to find a place to put it. Acharya (Sanskrit for 'teacher') you beg so bitterly to be recognized, and tell me to look at your family affairs.
Maudgalyayana (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his supernatural powers) said, 'Elder (an elder, a person of high moral standing), my childhood name was Luo Bu. When you mentioned my childhood name, Elder, I knew it was your son who had been away from home for a long time. Is everything well?' Luo Bu Maudgalyayana recognized his kind father, and after inquiring about his well-being, asked, 'Where is my mother now, enjoying happiness?' The elder replied, 'Luo Bu, your mother's actions were different from mine when she was alive. I practiced the ten virtues and five precepts, and after death, my spirit ascended to heaven. Your mother committed many evil deeds in her life, and after death, she fell into hell. Go to the dark paths of Jambudvipa (the human realm in Buddhist cosmology) and ask about your mother, and you will know where she is.' Hearing this, Maudgalyayana bid farewell to the elder and descended to South Jambudvipa, searching for his mother in the dark paths, but could not find her. He saw eight or nine men and women, idle and doing nothing. Maudgalyayana stepped forward and asked:
What is the reason for this? But please don't bow. Who are you, virtuous ones? What is it like here? Idle and doing nothing, wandering from outside the city walls.
I have come here today, and I only feel deeply strange in my heart. The people replied, 'Reporting to the monk, it is only because of the same name and surname, the names are confused, and we were chased here.' 'The interrogation has taken about three to five days, and we can only be released when there is nothing wrong.' 'We were sent to the grave by our wives and children long ago, and I alone restrain myself in this desolate place.' 'There are no relatives or friends around, and foxes, wolves, crows, and magpies are vying to divide us.' 'The house is destroyed, and there is nowhere to turn. I pleaded to King Yama with a mournful voice.' 'The judgment was to release us as ghosts, idle and doing nothing. What else can we do to bear the remaining retribution?' 'The path of life and death is now separated.'

【English Translation】 English version: 『Once the gate to the springs is closed, it will never open again. Even if the tomb is filled with all kinds of food, how can it satisfy the hunger in the stomach? Crying loudly is ultimately useless, merely a futile burning of paper money.』 『Tell the children at home to cultivate blessings and remember good deeds.』 Maudgalyayana (one of the Buddha's foremost disciples, known for his神通 powers) was silent for a long time before he began to recognize.
『Is Lady Qingti (Maudgalyayana's mother) here?』 The people replied, 『We do not know her.』 Maudgalyayana then asked, 『Where does King Yama (the King of Hell) reside?』 The people replied, 『Monk, walk a few more steps to the north, and you will see a triple-gated tower in the distance, with thousands of strong men holding knives and clubs. That is the residence of King Yama.』 Hearing this, Maudgalyayana walked a few steps north and indeed saw a triple-gated tower, with strong men driving countless sinners inside. Maudgalyayana stepped forward to inquire, but could not find his mother. He wept by the roadside, crying as he walked forward, explaining his purpose and requesting to see King Yama. The gatekeeper led Maudgalyayana to see King Yama, asking the reason for Maudgalyayana's visit.
『The King, seeing Maudgalyayana enter, respectfully put his palms together, wanting to stand up. Monk, if there is nothing else, why come here?』 『King Yama hurriedly showed a respectful expression behind his desk, temporarily ashamed that the Acharya (a religious teacher or master) had come to this place. Your disciple is in the underworld, judging the life and death of sinners. Although I do not know the monk, I have long known your name, knowing that you are the Buddha's messenger coming here, or is there another family matter? The crimes determined by Mount Tai (a sacred mountain in China, believed to be the place where souls return after death) are difficult to change, all are recorded by the heavenly and earthly scribes, the karmic retribution of sinners arises with conditions, who can save him who has committed these sins? The congealed grease of bloody flesh emits a stench throughout the long night, the filth stains the Acharya's pure robes, the underworld is not a place to stay for long, I hope the Acharya will return early.』 『Maudgalyayana reported: I have something I don't know whether to say or not, does Your Majesty know that when I was alive, I had parents who observed precepts day and night, often reducing their midday meals. According to their actions, after passing away in the human world, they should be reborn in the Pure Land. Only my father resides in heaven, and my compassionate mother cannot be found in any of the heavens, and I estimate that she should not be in hell either, I am only afraid that she has been unjustly executed by Huangtian (the blue sky, referring to the way of heaven). I implore you to investigate and release her, even if I have to search to the ends of the earth.』 Sadly sighing, exhaling a long breath, if the karmic retribution...』

【English Translation】 English version Having come to this realm, Does Great King Zeng also know? After Maudgalyayana (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his supernatural powers) finished speaking, the Great King summoned him to the hall. Maudgalyayana saw the Bodhisattva of Hell and immediately bowed. The Great King asked, 'Have you come seeking your mother?' Maudgalyayana replied, 'Yes, I have come seeking my mother. My mother committed countless sins during her lifetime and should fall into hell.' The Great King said, 'You go forward for now, and I will arrive shortly.' The Great King then summoned the Karma Officer and the Scribe of Destiny, who arrived in response. The Great King asked, 'How long has the monk's mother, named Lady Qingti, been deceased?' The Karma Officer replied, 'Great King, Lady Qingti has been deceased for three years, and her case records are all in the Celestial Bureau.' The Registrar of Mount Tai presented a book. The Great King ordered the Two Children of Good and Evil to go to Mount Tai to check which hell Lady Qingti was in. The Great King said, 'The monk can go with the children to ask the Five Paths General, who should know the whereabouts.' Upon hearing this, Maudgalyayana bid farewell to the Great King and, after walking a few steps, arrived at the Nairanjana River (legendary river of hell), where he saw countless sinners taking off their clothes and hanging them on trees, crying several times, wanting to cross but unable to, anxious and fearful, weeping with their heads in their arms. Maudgalyayana asked them the reason for their weeping. The water of the Nairanjana River flows swiftly westward, with jagged rocks and steep cliffs, making the path difficult. Clothes are taken off and hung on the branches of trees, being driven on, not allowed to stand for a moment. Asking their names by the riverbank, facing danger, unknowingly their clothes become wet. Only today do they realize that death has arrived, leaning against the trees in pairs, weeping for a long time. The precious things I was reluctant to part with in life, now luxurious carriages and horses have all turned to dust. Always thinking that it would never change, who knew it would have turned to dust long ago. Alas, the pain in my heart, futilely piling up white bones into high tombs. Southern singers and dancers, with many children and grandchildren, under the northern window, the wife welcomes the rain in a fragrant carriage. Everyone says it is impossible to argue, sighing deeply, who can be blamed? Those who commit sins fall into hell, those who do good deeds will surely ascend to the realms of humans and gods. Now each follows the flow of karma, destined to be difficult to meet again. Shaking hands and urging each other to strive to cultivate, turning back to wipe away tears, looking at each other with deep affection. Only hearing the urgent sound of urging in the ears, tens of thousands of people are driven forward. Ox-Head (jailer in hell, with the head of an ox and the body of a human)...

【English Translation】 English version On the south bank of the Paba tree, the jailer holds a fork on the north side of the water. The person in the water stares with wide eyes, while those on the shore shed tears. Had I known it would be such a difficult place, I would have regretted not cultivating blessings when I was alive.
Maudgalyāyana (目連), asked under the Nairañjanā River (柰河) tree.
The human realm, heaven, and hell are not empty.
Committing evil, regardless of whether the heavens created the sin, will be punished together in due time. This poor monk's kind mother did not accumulate good deeds, and her departed soul has fallen into the Three Evil Destinies (三塗). Hearing that she will enter hell in the future, I only wonder if there is a way to end this. The sinners all see the teacher Maudgalyāyana, and all weep, damaging their eyebrows. It has only been a short time since this disciple died, and the monk truly does not know about his kind mother. We committed many sins when we were alive, and today we regret our hardships. Even if wives and concubines fill the mountains and rivers, who would be willing to replace us in death? When will we be able to leave the gates of the underworld again, to report to my children and grandchildren at home? There is no need for white jade coffins, nor is it worth burying gold in tombs. Prolonged sorrow and lamentation are ultimately useless; I do not hear the drums, music, or songs. If you want the deceased to be free from suffering, there is nothing better than cultivating blessings to save the souls of the dead.
The monk returned to convey the message, instructing them to create blessings to save the deceased. Except for the Buddha alone, no one can save them. May the monk's Bodhi Nirvana (涅槃) always be present, carrying all living beings. May wisdom diligently grind away the forest of afflictions and execute power with a universal heart in the world. And may the great vows of all Buddhas, if they escape from Naraka (泥犁), be the universal descent of the monk's kind mother. Maudgalyāyana asked to proceed further. In the middle, he arrived at the seat of the Five Paths General, asking about the whereabouts of his mother.
The Five Paths General has a fierce nature, with golden armor shining brightly and swords crossing. There are over a million people on the left and right, all of whom are quick with their hands and feet. His clamor is like thunder, shaking and vibrating; his angry eyes shine like lightning. Some have their bellies split open, and some have their faces peeled off. Although Maudgalyāyana is a sage, his soul is also frightened and his gaze falls. Maudgalyāyana weeps, thinking of his kind mother, his supernatural powers swift as wind and clouds.

【English Translation】 English version The body should be shattered like tiles, Hands and feet at that time were like powder, molten iron with light scorched the face, Piercing through the body, entering from the left as if exiting from the right, copper arrows flew by, shooting at the eyes, A wheel of swords fell straight down from the sky, cutting the body, (the condemned) said that even after a thousand years no one would come to save me, Iron rakes gathered and scattered, repeatedly tormenting.
Maudgalyayana (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his supernatural powers) hearing these words, wept and sighed, and stepped forward to ask: 'Lord of the prison, is there a lady named Qingti in this hell?' The prison warden replied: 'Monk, what is her relationship to you?' Maudgalyayana replied: 'She is my own mother.' The prison warden replied: 'Monk, there is no lady Qingti in this hell. All the hells in front are women, you should be able to see her.' Maudgalyayana listened and continued forward to a hell, about one yojana (an ancient Indian unit of length) high and low. Black smoke filled the air and the stench was overwhelming. He saw a Hayagriva Rakshasa (a jailer in hell) standing there with an iron fork in his hand. Maudgalyayana asked: 'What is this hell called?' The Rakshasa replied: 'This is the Copper Pillar Iron Bed Hell.' Maudgalyayana asked: 'What sins did the sinners in hell commit during their lifetime that they would fall into this hell?' The prison warden replied: 'During their lifetime, women and men, men and women committed adultery, on the beds of parents, disciples on the beds of teachers, and slaves on the beds of masters, they will fall into this hell.' (There are countless such sinners) in the east and west directions, with men and women accounting for half each.
Women lie on iron beds, their bodies nailed through, men embrace copper pillars, burned cruelly and rotten, Iron awls are inserted for a long time, sharp sword chisels, teeth are as fast as awls drilling, Empty intestines are filled with iron balls, and thirst is quenched with iron juice, Caltrops enter the abdomen, cutting like knife arms, swords and halberds jump and dance in the air, stars are chaotic, Knives carve flesh and bones, making cracking sounds, swords cut livers and intestines, breaking inch by inch.
It cannot be said that hell and heaven are equal.
Heaven is joyful and booming day and night.
No one in hell can ask for help to get out, take advantage of your parents being alive to create blessings for them, In this way, they can get one share of the seven shares of merit, even if the East Sea turns into mulberry fields, The sinners still cannot escape from hell.
Maudgalyayana finished speaking and continued forward, after a while

阿取(A qu,無法確定具體含義,根據上下文推測可能是一種咒語或感嘆詞)惟得生天(only to be born in heaven)。
【English Translation】 English version (Maudgalyayana) went between the various hells, arriving at one hell. He asked the warden: 'Is there a Lady Qingti (Qingti Furen, Lady Qingti) in this hell?' The warden replied: 'Lady Qingti is the mother of a monk.' Maudgalyayana asked: 'Is she my kind mother?' The warden told the monk: 'Three years ago, a Lady Qingti also came to this hell, and later she was requested by Avici Hell (Avici Hell) and is now in Avici Hell.' Maudgalyayana was very sad after hearing this and fainted. After a long time, he woke up. He gradually walked forward and met a Rakshasa (Rakshasa), who was guarding the road, and asked him.
Maudgalyayana walked, his heart filled with sorrow and worry, swords scattered on the roadside like weeds. Listening carefully, he heard from afar the great winds blowing between the hells, making a miserable howling sound. Because of missing his kind mother, his heart was broken, but he was not afraid of the difficulties ahead and continued to move forward. Suddenly, he met the Yaksa King (Yaksa King), who pressed his sword and sat on a snake, blocking the middle of the road. Maudgalyayana said: 'This poor monk is a disciple of Sakyamuni Buddha (Sakyamuni Buddha), Having attained the threefold wisdom (threefold wisdom), he can escape the cycle of birth and death. Alas, my kind mother, named Qingti, Her soul fell here after death. I have come to inspect the various hells, Asking them, they all said they did not have this person. Recently, I heard that my mother was sent to Avici Hell. General, you should also know about this matter. Please tell me the truth, do not hesitate.' 'The kindness of breastfeeding in the human world is as deep as the sea. Hearing that my kind mother is suffering from bone marrow pain, Who can know the pain in this poor monk's heart?' The Yaksa was shocked when he heard this, He said directly that there were no traces of punishment here either. It is rare in ancient and modern times for a monk to be so filial, Not fearing the suffering of hell, he personally came to inspect. Lady Qingti seems to exist, But the shadow is blurred and cannot be completely determined. Iron is poured into a city, with copper walls and iron walls, The karmic wind and thunder shake, blowing at once, and the bodies of those who come here are as lonely as wolves. Advise Ajari (Ajari, another transliteration of Acharya, meaning teacher) to go back early, searching here in vain, It is better to go and see the Tathagata Buddha (Tathagata Buddha) early, what is the use of beating your chest in regret?'
Maudgalyayana heard about the difficulty of hell, and immediately threw the bowl and rose into the air. In a moment, he arrived at the Sala Grove (Sala Grove), circled the Buddha three times, and then sat aside, looking up at the Buddha's venerable face, his eyes not leaving for a moment, and said: 'World Honored One, the things I lack.' The Tathagata Buddha said: 'I have been chasing far away, indulging your mind, and traveling all over the world.'
A qu (A qu, the specific meaning cannot be determined, it may be a mantra or exclamation based on the context) only to be born in heaven.

【English Translation】 English version Above: The kind mother has not been met again. Hearing that she is suffering in Avici Hell (the deepest hell in Buddhism), thinking of it breaks my heart. Fierce dragons and snakes make it difficult to move forward, and there is no way to offer help in haste. The Buddha's divine power can move mountains and seas, but all beings are mostly bound by love. I have come urgently to report to you, how can I meet my kind mother again? The World-Honored One called out to Mahāmaudgalyāyana (one of the ten great disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha) and said: 'Do not grieve and weep for now, The sins of the world are like ropes, not imposed by others. Quickly take my khakkhara (a Buddhist monk's staff), it can eliminate the eight difficulties and three calamities. As long as you diligently recite my name, hell should be like opening up.'
Maudgalyayana, relying on the Buddha's power, soared downwards as fast as an arrow. In an instant, he arrived at Avici Hell. In the air, he saw fifty Rakshasas (demons) and Yakshas (semi-divine beings) with ox heads and horse faces, their teeth like sword trees, their mouths like blood basins, their voices like thunder, and their eyes like lightning. The jailers on duty in the heavenly court reported to Maudgalyayana from afar, saying: 'Monk, do not come here, this is not a good place.' 'This is the road to hell, and the black smoke to the west is full of hell's poisonous gas. If inhaled, the monk will be turned to ashes. Has the monk not heard that even iron and stone will suffer in Avici Hell?'
Where is hell to be found? It is in that black smoke full of anger to the west. Maudgalyayana recites the Buddha's name as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, hell is like home to me. Wiping away tears, he raised his staff in the air from afar, and the ghosts and gods immediately fell to the ground like hemp. They were so frightened that their white sweat flowed like rain, and they muttered to themselves in a daze. They released the three slow clubs from their hands and threw away the six-tongued forks from their arms. The Buddha sent me to see my kind mother and rescue Poṭa (food) from Avici Hell. Maudgalyayana soared past regardless, and the jailers looked at each other but dared not stop him.
Maudgalyayana walked forward to a hell, about a hundred steps away, and was sucked in by the strong air current, almost falling backwards. The iron city of Avici Hell was towering into the clouds, the swords and halberds were as dense as a forest, and the knives and spears were stacked upon each other. The sword trees were thousands of feet high, stabbing each other with fragrant needles. The knife mountains were ten thousand feet high, horizontally connected to the steep cliffs, collapsing in chaos. The fierce plows roared like clouds, filling the entire sky.

【English Translation】 English version: The sword wheels clustered together, shining like stars, dust covering the earth. Iron snakes spewed flames, scales spread in all directions. Copper dogs inhaled smoke, barking vibrantly on three sides. Caltrops fell from the sky in disarray, piercing the chests of men. Cones and drills flew sideways in the heavens, gouging and stabbing the backs of women. Iron rakes gouged out eyes, crimson blood flowing westward. Copper forks chopped at waists, white flesh pulled eastward. Thereupon, the mountain of knives entered the furnace, skulls shattered, flesh rotted, tendons snapped, skin tore, hands were severed. Shredded flesh splattered beyond the four gates, congealed blood pooled beside the prison furnace. Cries of agony echoed to the heavens, precarious and drenched in sweat. Thunder rumbled, the earth trembled faintly. Upward, clouds and smoke scattered and drifted; downward, the clanging of iron was chaotic and disordered. Arrow-haired demons scurried about, copper-mouthed birds cawed and shrieked. Tens of thousands of jailers, all with the heads of oxen and the faces of horses. Even if your heart were made of iron and stone, you would still find the souls trembling in fear.
Maudgalyayana (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his supernatural powers) held his staff and walked forward, his sorrow deepening as he thought of Avīci (the most painful of the eight great hells). In all other hells there is a moment of respite, but in this Avīci there is no hope to be seen. Countless beings enter at the same time, collectively enduring one form of punishment. Sometimes it seems as if no one enters, sometimes it seems as if only oneself enters, yet one's body fills the entire Cakravāda (the iron wall surrounding the world). Ānanda, Ānanda, the iron chains vibrate, the sky is filled with sighs. The booming and clanging sounds resound heroically across the earth. The long snake gleams, but is threefold black. The great bird spreads its wings, both wings are blue. Ten thousand red furnaces fan vast coals, a thousand layers of crimson flames burst forth like shooting stars. To the east and west, iron drills cruelly torment sinews and bones; to the left and right, copper hinges gleam with stony eyes. Golden clangs fall like wind and rain, iron instruments pour down from the sky like a torrential downpour. Alas, how bitter, how unbearable, and long nails are driven into the abdomen. Seeing this, Maudgalyayana chanted a lament, wholeheartedly reciting the Buddha's name dozens of times. The wind blows poisonous air, breathing it in from afar, watching his body turn into a pile of ashes. With one shake of the staff, the black city gate locks fall; with another shake, the bright city gate opens on both sides. Before Maudgalyayana could call out, the jailers came out carrying instruments of torture. Monk, whose news do you seek? This city is boundless, ten thousand Yojana (an ancient Indian unit of length) in extent, and none of the jailers can open or close it. Swords gleam with cold light, Ā-diǎn-diǎn, the suffering people are filled with sorrow and remorse.

【English Translation】 English version: The great fire eventually melted the light on the ground, smoke filled the air, causing melancholy, and the sky was dark. Suddenly, I saw an Acharya (Acharya, referring to a monk proficient in scriptures and discipline, worthy of being a teacher) standing here, yet it seemed like I had never met him before. Even if calculations suggested that no one should be here, it must be the compassionate power of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). The chief of the prison (head of the prison guards) opened his mouth and asked, 'Venerable Monk (a respectful term for monks), what is the cause, why open this gate of hell?'
Maudgalyāyana (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his supernatural powers) replied, 'If I, the poor monk (a humble term used by monks), don't open it, who will? It was opened by something the monk sent.' The chief of the prison asked, 'What was sent that opened it?' Maudgalyāyana told the chief of the prison, 'It was opened by the twelve-ringed khakkhara (a staff carried by monks).' The prison guard then asked, 'Why has the Venerable Monk come here?' Maudgalyāyana replied, 'My mother is named Queen Qingti, so I have come to seek and visit her.' Upon hearing this, the chief of the prison returned to the high tower in the prison, raised a white banner and beat an iron drum, asking, 'Is Queen Qingti in the first level of hell?' The reply was, 'She is not in the first level.' So he went to the second level, raised a black banner and beat an iron drum, asking, 'Is Queen Qingti in the second level of hell?' The reply was, 'She is not in the second level either.' So he went to the third level, raised a yellow banner and beat an iron drum, asking, 'Is Queen Qingti in the third level of hell?' The reply was, 'She is not there either.' So he went to the fourth level, and she was not there either. He went to the fifth level and asked, and they said she was not there. He went to the sixth level and they also said Queen Qingti was not there. The prison guard went to the seventh level, raised a blue banner and beat an iron drum, asking, 'Is Queen Qingti in the seventh level of hell?' At this time, Queen Qingti was in the seventh level, with forty-nine long nails piercing her body, nailed to an iron bed, and she dared not answer. The prison guard asked again, 'Is Queen Qingti in the seventh level of hell?' (Queen Qingti thought) 'If they are looking for Queen Qingti, then I, this sinful body, am she, and I should have answered earlier, why am I not answering because of fear?' The chief of the prison will take me elsewhere to suffer, so I dare not answer. The prison guard replied, 'Outside the gate is a disciple of the Three Jewels, who has shaved his head and beard, and is wearing monastic robes, claiming to be your son, so he has come to visit.' Upon hearing this, Queen Qingti pondered for a long time and replied, 'Chief of the prison, I have no son who has become a monk, don't be mistaken.' Upon hearing this, the chief of the prison went back to the high tower and reported, 'Venerable Monk, why are you falsely claiming a prisoner in hell to be your mother? Don't speak nonsense if there is nothing to say.' Upon hearing this, Maudgalyāyana wept tears of sorrow and told the chief of the prison, 'I understand... the message was wrong.'

【English Translation】 English version Pindola Bharadvaja (頻道小時目羅卜). After his parents passed away, he renounced the world and became a monk, shaving his head and beard, and was named Mahāmaudgalyāyana Jailer, don't be angry, ask one more time. Hearing this, the jailer returned to the seventh level of the prison and reported to the prisoner. Outside the gate is the Three Jewels, who was called 'Luobu' (羅卜) when he was young. After his parents passed away, he renounced the world and became a monk, shaving his head and beard, and was named Mahāmaudgalyāyana. Lady Qingti (青提夫人) (uncertain if this is the name of Maudgalyāyana's mother, to be verified) heard this. The Three Jewels outside the gate, if he was called 'Luobu' when he was young, then that is my poor child. Hearing this, the jailer immediately got up and bound Lady Qingti with forty-nine long nails and iron chains around her waist, and surrounded her with wooden staffs. He drove her out of the gate to where the mother and son could meet.
The wooden staffs gathered like fish scales, the sins of a thousand years are immeasurable. Blood flowed from the seven orifices, fierce fire spewed from the mother's mouth. Tribulus caltrops fell step by step from the sky, like the sound of five hundred broken carts. How could the lumbar spine be picked up with a tube, the jailers held them up and blocked them left and right. Ox-headed jailers stood east and west with rakes and locks, staggering forward step by step. Maudgalyāyana hugged his mother and cried bitterly, lamenting that it was all because his son was unfilial. Calamity befell his compassionate mother, causing her to fall into the three evil realms, only families that accumulate good deeds have surplus blessings. The heavens kill people for no reason, in the past, mother was more beautiful than Pan An. Now she is haggard and suddenly withered, I have heard that hell is very hard. Today I know how difficult it is to walk, since the disaster happened and my mother passed away. I often offer sacrifices at the grave every day, has mother been able to eat? Once past, her face always looks haggard, mother heard Maudgalyāyana's words. Sobbing and choked with tears, yesterday I was separated from my son by life and death. Who knew that today we could reunite again, mother did not cultivate blessings during her lifetime. All ten evil deeds were complete, at that time I did not listen to my son's advice. That's why I suffer in this Avici Great Hell, mother was extremely glorious in the past. Entering and exiting were covered with silk and brocade, how could I endure this Naraka suffering. Transformed into a thousand-year-old hungry ghost, pulling out my tongue thousands of times from my mouth. My chest has been plowed by iron plows countless times, my bones, joints, and skin are broken everywhere. No need for knives.

【English Translation】 English version The sword withers, experiencing thousands of deaths in an instant. At this time, preaching the Dharma brings rebirth, entering this hell to suffer together. Regardless of status, whether noble or lowly, or ministers of the court, if you diligently offer sacrifices at home, you will only receive praise from your neighbors for your filial piety. Even if you pour sacrificial wine on the grave, it is not as good as copying a line of scripture. Maudgalyayana (a disciple of the Buddha, known for his supernatural powers) sobbed and wept like rain, then turned to ask the jailer. Frequently needing a monk who has left home, with little strength, how can he rescue his loving mother? Concealing the faults of elders is what sages have said since ancient times. I only wish the jailer would release my mother, and I am willing to suffer for her for a long time. The jailer is a person of strong character, silently angry, with a pale face. Although I am a jailer, the judgments are all made by King Yama (the king of hell). The mother bears her own sins, and the monk bears his own sins. Golden plaques and remonstrations cannot change anything, and the jailers will not alter anything without authorization. When the time for punishment arrives, the criminals must be taken to the execution hall and subjected to swords and spears. Monk, if you want your mother to be released, you should go home and burn incense to pray. Maudgalyayana's mother's voice was mournful, and the jailers urged her on both sides with forks. About to reach the front of the prison, but wanting to stop, sighing for a long time, stay well. Lady Qingti (Maudgalyayana's mother) stretched out one hand, holding the prison door, and looked back. Saying: 'Stay well, sinful body, inch-long intestines, delicate son.' I, your mother, was stingy and greedy in the past, not accumulating merit for the next life, not repaying kindness. Saying there is heaven but no hell, slaughtering pigs and sheep in large quantities to sacrifice to ghosts and gods. Only caring about enjoying the present, how could I know that the underworld tortures the souls of the dead? Now that I am suffering in hell, I realize and regret what I have done. When regretting, what is the use of regretting? Spilled water is hard to recover! When will I be able to escape this painful hell, how dare I hope to be reborn as a human again? Acharya (teacher), you are a disciple of Tathagata (the title of the Buddha), you should fully understand the kindness of parents. If one day you attain enlightenment, do not forget the hardships your mother suffered in hell. Since Maudgalyayana saw his mother's farewell, he wished he could die immediately. Throwing himself down.

(Naga and Deva, eight kinds of non-human beings)前後圍繞。
【English Translation】 English version: (Maudgalyayana said) Mount Tai collapsed, and blood flowed from all seven orifices. Mother, please do not enter yet, turn back and listen to one more word from your son. The affection between mother and child is innate, and the kindness of breastfeeding is natural. Your son is parting with you today, and I know not when we shall meet again. How can I bear to hear this false suffering, my heart aches and hangs heavy. Hell does not allow substitution, only wailing and loud complaints. Separated, there is no way to help each other.
Your son will also die with you, Mother, before the gates of hell.
Maudgalyayana (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his supernatural powers) saw his mother in hell, his heart was broken, and his voice choked with sobs. Then he threw himself down, like five Mount Tai collapsing. Blood flowed from all seven orifices. After a long time, he died and then revived. He pressed his hands on the ground, straightened his clothes, and flew to where the Lord Buddha (Lord Buddha) was.
Maudgalyayana's emotions were all confused, and he could hardly hear people's voices. After a long time, after pondering, he awoke, threw his bowl into the air, and asked the Lord Buddha (Lord Buddha). Maudgalyayana complained to the Buddha (Buddha) about his suffering, and spoke of the scenes of the mountain of knives and the sword trees. Thanks to the Buddha's (Buddha) divine power, and borrowing his remaining power, he was able to see his kind mother in Avici (the lowest of the eight great hells). The smoke and flames of the iron city, the flames rising, the forest of sword blades, tens of thousands of layers. Human fat shattered, mixed with molten copper, the bursting flesh contained in the pool, congealing with blood. How can I bear to see my kind mother's face, suffering the invasion of knives and swords all night long. White bones climb the sword tree ten thousand times, and a beautiful face goes to the knife forest a hundred times. What is the heaviest thing in the world? The love of parents is the deepest kindness. The Tathagata (one of the titles of the Buddha) is the compassionate parent of all beings, may he illuminate my ignorant heart. The Tathagata (Tathagata) is inherently compassionate, and hearing these words, he sadly frowned. Beings emerge and disappear in the net of reincarnation, just like moths flying into the fire. Your mother committed many sins in the past, and her soul fell into Avici (Avici) as soon as she left. This karmic tribulation still cannot be escaped, and it is not something that Buddhas (Buddha) and ordinary people can know. The Buddha (Buddha) called Nanda (Nanda, Buddha's cousin) and other disciples to go to the underworld to save her.
The Tathagata (Tathagata) led the eight classes of Nagas and Devas (Naga and Deva, eight kinds of non-human beings) surrounded him. He released light and moved the earth, saving the suffering of hell. The Tathagata (Tathagata) gathered Zhiben Jun (unknown, possibly a monk's name).

Faint and fleeting, nothing in heaven or earth compares to a 'pi' (疋, pǐ, a measure word).
To the left, sinking; to the right, submerged; like mountains towering high, emerging from the clouds, urging on, grand and imposing.
Heaven and hell open at once; walking like rain, seated like thunder; like the moon surrounded by the sea; alone, with hesitant steps, like a lion's stride (symbolizing majesty); tigers walk leisurely, elephant kings return; heavenly music plays the willow in the clouds; fragrant petals (bin fen) fall like plum blossoms in the air; Indra (a Buddhist guardian deity) steps forward, holding a jade treasure; Brahma (a deity in Buddhism) follows behind, presenting a golden plaque; beyond description, beyond description; the Tathagata's (an epithet of the Buddha) divine power saves the spring's flow; heavenly beings and the eight classes of beings on the left and right; gods of the four directions guarding east, west, south, and north; the white hair between his eyebrows (one of the 32 marks of the Buddha) shines with a thousand colors; behind his head, a halo of five-colored clouds; hell is illuminated and vanishes completely; forests of swords and trees of knives are like shattered dust; the jailers are illuminated and kneel down, joining their palms and bowing with one heart; the Tathagata today arises with compassion; hell is destroyed and demolished; iron pellets transform into Mani jewels (wish-fulfilling jewels); mountains of knives transform into lands of lapis lazuli; molten copper transforms into waters of merit; cool and winding, flowing around the pond; geese, ducks, and mandarin ducks support tears; red waves give rise to green mist every night; the trees emit purple clouds every morning; all sinners are reborn in heaven; only Maudgalyayana's (a disciple of the Buddha) mother remains a hungry ghost.
Maudgalyayana, empowered by the Buddha's might, sees his mother's deep-rooted sins, her karmic force difficult to dispel. Though spared the bitterness of hell, she has fallen into the realm of hungry ghosts. Sorrow and joy are vastly different, suffering and happiness profoundly distinct. Compared to her previous state, she experiences a hundred thousand times more suffering. Her throat is like the eye of a needle, not even a drop of water can pass through. Her head is like Mount Tai, three rivers cannot fill it. She has not heard the name of rice water, and for months and years, she endures the pain of starvation and weakness. In the distance, she sees clear, cold water, but as she approaches, it transforms into a river of pus. Even if she obtains delicious food and fragrant meals, they immediately turn into raging fire. His mother is now starving and suffering, her life hanging by a thread. If you do not go to her with compassion, how can you be called a filial son? The paths of life and death are separated, and a future meeting is difficult to foresee. To save her from the peril of hanging by a thread, the matter is also

【English Translation】 English version One should not delay until dawn. The practice of leaving home relies on the offerings of believers for sustenance. Even if there is food available in the monastery, it may be difficult to digest. Therefore, I bid farewell to my lady and go to Rajagriha (Wangshecheng, a major city in ancient India) to beg for food and then return to see her. Maudgalyayana (Mulian, one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples, known for his supernatural powers) bid farewell to his mother, cast his bowl into the air, and in an instant, arrived in Rajagriha. He begged for food in order, arriving at the gate of a wealthy householder (Changzhe). The householder, seeing Maudgalyayana begging for food at an improper time, inquired about his whereabouts. The householder said, 'Venerable monk, the mealtime has passed. What will you do with the food you beg for now?' Maudgalyayana replied, 'Householder, my mother's spirit fell into Avici Hell (Abi Diyu, the lowest level of hell in Buddhism) three days after her death.' 'Recently, I was able to escape with the help of the Tathagata (Rulai, an epithet of the Buddha), but my body is like withered bones, and my breath is like a silk thread. My heart is breaking, but who can understand this pain? It is not proper to beg for food at an improper time, but I do so to feed my compassionate mother.' The householder was greatly astonished upon hearing this, contemplating the impermanence of life and feeling unhappy. Golden saddles are forever gone, and sparkling pearls have lost their luster. Beautiful faces require makeup due to death. Just sing and be happy, for human life is like a turning candle. Why seek happiness in heaven? I only hear of the many sinners in hell. Sometimes we eat, sometimes we wear, but do not learn from the foolish who accumulate much. It is better to create good causes for the future. Who can guarantee that life will last until tomorrow? People look at each other and die unknowingly. Do not be stingy with money. Once you enter the coffin, what is the use of pouring offerings on the grave?' 'Wise people use money to do good deeds, while foolish people use gold to buy fields and houses. One toils hard to find wealth in life, but after death, it is all divided by others.' The householder was suddenly awakened by these words, realizing that the field of merit of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) is difficult to encounter. He hurriedly urged his attendants not to delay, and to bring food from the house for this Acharya (A sheli, a teacher). The vision of hell suddenly vanished, and he understood the inconceivable nature of the Buddhas. The householder held the food in his hand, gave it to the Acharya, and made a great vow: 'Not only does this monk serve his compassionate mother, but may all the sinners in hell be filled.' Maudgalyayana begged for fine food, brought the bowl to his mother, and arrived in the wilderness, where he fed his mother with a golden spoon. Queen Qingti (Qingti Furen), although...

【English Translation】 English version: Suffering in hell, the thought of stinginess and greed has not yet been eliminated. Seeing her son about to bring the rice bowl, she feels stingy from afar. The one who comes is the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), who is my son, begging for food for me in the human world. You people stop, let me enjoy it myself, let alone help each other? Maudgalyayana (Mùlián) held the rice and bowl and offered it. Mother (Ā niáng) was afraid of being plundered, and kept looking around at her companions, blocking the bowl with her left hand and grabbing the food with her right hand. When the food came to her mouth, it turned into a raging fire. Although the elder (mother) was willing to get the ticket, her stingy habit was especially deep. Seeing her mother like this, Maudgalyayana's liver and gallbladder felt like they were cut by a knife. Now my Śrāvakā (Shēngwén) power is weak and my wisdom is shallow, I am a small person. I can only ask the Lord Buddha (Shìzūn), I should know the way to relieve and eliminate suffering, and see where my mother eats.
The gods saw the wish and passed it forward, stinginess and greed had not eaten and first scrambled. My son took rice from the human world from afar, holding it to compare with healing the hungry pit. Eating alone is not enough to be full, everyone stop thinking and slowly bear forgetting. Qingti (Qīngtí, Maudgalyayana's mother)'s karma of stinginess and greed is deep, and a raging fire is born in the entrance of the throat. Maudgalyayana saw his mother eating and turning into a raging fire, beating himself all over, like a mountain collapsing. Blood flowed from his ears and nose, and he cried out, 'Oh, my mother'. Giving this rice in Jambudvipa (Nán yánfú tí), there is a seven-foot-high divine light on the rice. Treat it as fragrant and delicious food, but the rice turns into fire before it enters the mouth. Because the mouth is stingy and the heart does not change, so it suffers such sins year after year. Now the pain is unbearable and there is no way, karma does not allow mutual substitution. People in the world must have jealousy, once they fall into the Three Evil Realms (Sāntú) the sin will not end. Before the sweet drink could enter the throat, a raging fire came out of the mother's mouth. The sins of the world are full of Sahā (Suōpó), only the sin of stinginess is the most. Since the fire came out of the mouth for no reason, it is clear that karma is not caused by others. Always practice equality in everything, and often recite Amitābha (Mítuó) with a heart of longevity. As long as you can give up greed, the Pure Land (Jìngtǔ) paradise will be reached at will. Qingti called out to her filial son, the sinful body cannot die by itself. Do not practice evil filial piety everywhere, who would be willing to work hard to save your mother. Seeing the food, I couldn't copy it into my mouth, but seeing the flames, I was hurt for no reason.
【English Translation】 English version: When will the mind of stinginess and greed be removed? I fear there are still remaining evil consequences from past deeds. O Ashi (a respectful term for a monk), you are truly a filial son to Niangniang (referring to his mother). Please give me some cold water to relieve my hungry and thirsty stomach.
Maudgalyāyana (a disciple of the Buddha, foremost in supernatural powers) heard his mother asking for water, his voice choked and hoarse. He suddenly remembered that south of Rājagṛha (a city in ancient India) there was a large river, its waters vast and boundless, called the Vaitaraṇī River. Perhaps it could be used to relieve his mother's suffering from the torment of fire. In Jambudvīpa (the continent where we live), water is seen as cool and refreshing; to the Devas (gods), water is a lapis lazuli treasure pond; to turtles, this water is nourishing; but to Qingti (Maudgalyāyana's mother), water is pus and blood and raging fire. Maudgalyāyana came to the water's edge, but did not see his son. He vowed, using his left hand to hold the bank, and his right hand to scoop up water. This was because of her stinginess, and her right hand scooping water was because of her greed, all because the mind of stinginess and greed had not ceased. Before the water entered her mouth, it turned into fire. Maudgalyāyana saw his mother eating food turning into raging fire, drinking water also turning into raging fire, beating his chest and weeping sorrowfully. He came before the Buddha, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and then stood to one side and reported: 'World Honored One, compassionate one, although you have saved my mother, she now eats food turning into fire, and drinks water also turning into fire. How can she be saved from this great suffering?' The World Honored One told Maudgalyāyana: 'Your mother cannot eat food now. You must wait until the fifteenth day of the seventh month of the year, and extensively perform the Ullambana (a ceremony of offering) to be able to eat food.' Maudgalyāyana saw his mother's hunger and reported: 'World Honored One, can it not be done on the thirteenth and fourteenth days of each month? Must we wait until the fifteenth day of the seventh month of the year to eat food?' The World Honored One replied: 'No. Only your mother should extensively perform the Ullambana on that day, which is the day when the meditating monks of all the mountains (famous mountains) end their meditation, the day when Arhats (saints who have cut off afflictions and attained liberation) attain enlightenment, the day when Devadatta's (Buddha's cousin who tried to split the Sangha) sins are extinguished, the day when King Yama (the king of hell) rejoices, and the day when all hungry ghosts can universally receive fullness.' Maudgalyāyana followed the Buddha's teachings and came to the pagoda temple near Rājagṛha, reciting the Mahayana scriptures and extensively planting the roots of goodness of the Ullambana. His mother was able to eat a full meal in this Ullambana. Since eating this meal, the mother and son have never seen each other again. Maudgalyāyana searched everywhere for his mother, but could not find her, weeping sorrowfully, and came before the Buddha, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and then stood to one side, folded his palms and knelt down, reporting: 'World Honored One, my mother eats food turning into fire, drinks water turning into fire, and has been saved by the compassion of the World Honored One...'
【English Translation】 English version Your mother is suffering the torment of the fiery hells. Since receiving a meal on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, you and your mother have not seen each other. I don't know if she has fallen into hell or gone to the path of the hungry ghosts. The World-Honored One replied, 'Your mother has neither fallen into hell nor gone to the path of the hungry ghosts. The merit of your reciting scriptures and creating the good roots of the Ullambana has transformed your mother's hungry ghost body into a black dog in the city of Rājagṛha (Royal City). If you wish to see your mother, practice impartiality and beg for alms in order, without regard to the rich or poor. When you come to the gate of a wealthy elder's house, a black dog will come out and grab your kāṣāya (袈裟, monk's robe), and speak in human language. That is your mother.' Maudgalyāyana (目連) followed the Buddha's instructions and immediately took his bowl to seek his mother. He did not discriminate between the poor and the rich, and searched through the streets and alleys, but could not find his mother. When he came to the gate of an elder's house, he saw a black dog come out of the house and grab Maudgalyāyana's kāṣāya, and immediately speak in human language, saying, 'Filial son, you were able to save me from the dark paths of hell, why don't you save me from the suffering of being a dog?' Maudgalyāyana replied, 'Compassionate mother, it is because of my unfilial conduct that you have fallen into the three evil realms. I would rather you be in the path of the hungry ghosts than be a dog.' His mother cried out, 'Filial son, suffering this dog's body, my voice is hoarse, and I can only express my hunger through walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. I can only eat unclean things in the pit and drink from the long streams to quench my thirst. In the morning, I hear the elder reciting the Three Jewels, but I do not hear my daughter reciting the honored scriptures. I would rather be a dog and endure the impurity of the earth than hear the name of hell in my ears.' Maudgalyāyana led his mother to the front of the Buddha's stupa (佛塔, pagoda) in Rājagṛha, and for seven days and seven nights, he recited the Mahāyāna (大乘, Great Vehicle) scriptures, repented of his sins, and recited the precepts. By virtue of this merit, his mother was freed from her dog's body, shed her dog's skin, which was hung on a tree, and regained her woman's body, fully restored to human form. Maudgalyāyana said, 'Mother, it is difficult to obtain a human body, and even more difficult to be born in the central lands, difficult to hear the Dharma (佛法, Buddha's teachings), and difficult to generate a good heart.' His mother said, 'Now that I have obtained a human body, I will immediately cultivate blessings.' Maudgalyāyana took his mother to the Sāla (娑羅) trees, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and then stood to one side and said, 'World-Honored One, my mother and I have observed the path of karma (業道, karmic path) from beginning to end. What other sins are there?'

【English Translation】 English version:
Respecting and not violating the words of Maudgalyayana (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha, known for his supernatural powers). Examining the sins of his mother more closely from the perspective of the three karmic paths of body, speech, and mind. Maudgalyayana, seeing his mother's sins eradicated, was overjoyed and reported: 'Mother, it is time to return; the world of Jambudvipa (the world we live in) is not suitable for a long stay. Birth, dwelling, and death originally have no fixed abode. The Western Buddha-land is the most exquisite. I am willing to lead the way, and I will also have celestial maidens come to greet you. Once you go there, you can enjoy happiness.' Initially, he spoke verses to liberate Kulun. At that time, when this scripture was recited, there were eighty thousand who attained Nirvana (the Buddhist term for liberation), eighty thousand monks, eighty thousand Upasakas (lay male devotees), and eighty thousand aunts. They bowed in reverence, surrounded him, joyfully believed, accepted, and practiced accordingly.
