A Record of Merit and Virtue of the Dharma Master Hongbian of the Shiyi Sect in Daban Sandbar

Based on the Mother of Door Gods and the Golden Light Sutra, a brief account of the merits and virtues of Vaishravana (guardian deity of Buddhism) and the goddess of merit (Lakshmi). At that time, the World-Honored One was on the left side of Xiang Mountain, in meditation during the first part of the night. At this time, the assembly of the Thirty-Three Heavens (Trayastrimsa, one of the six heavens of desire in Buddhism) and Vaishravana received predictions—they came down to offer music, incense, and flowers to the World-Honored One. After the offering, the World-Honored One gave Vaishravana a prediction, foretelling that he would become a Buddha in the future, with the Buddha name Niwuluozhe Vaishravana. After receiving the prediction, Vaishravana made a great vow before the Buddha: 'May I, before becoming a Buddha, act as a mighty Yaksha King (a type of guardian deity), protecting all sentient beings in this world of Jambudvipa (the world we live in), as well as the king, ministers, those who pay homage, the prince, and the people of the whole country. Whether men or women, may they believe in and accept the Golden Light Sutra. May the fourfold assembly (bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, and upasikas) recite this sutra for me, for all those who have awakened in their country...'

□□□□ not completed, the people suffer from famine, diseases spread, neighboring enemies attack each other, heavy rain and strong winds occur frequently, seasonal festivals and solar/lunar eclipses happen, strange sounds come from the wells, stars move, and the earth shakes, causing the people of the country to suffer various hardships. If such countless hundreds and thousands of disasters and evil events occur. At this time, World-Honored One, that king wishes to protect the country, the king often in an open place in the country, sprinkles the ground with fragrant water, sets up a mandala, and reads a word for me. The master lectures and recites the Golden Light Sutra, at this time, countless hundreds and thousands of gods, as well as the old good gods protecting the king, and my retinue, each hide their forms, and provide protection and assistance for them. Causing those enemies to naturally surrender, and also causing sorrow and epidemics to be eliminated and healed, all soldiers are brave and strong, and the people of the country enjoy peace and happiness.' The World-Honored One said: 'Is this true?' At that time, Vaishravana replied to the World-Honored One: 'If a king summons me in this way, if I am not present there, and do not protect the king, may I not see the brothers of the great country, may (I) be broken into seven pieces.'
