English version

The Collection of Poems by Wang Fanzhi - Preface (partially missing)

I base this collection on the Buddhist doctrines of non-self (Anatta), suffering (Dukkha), and emptiness (Sunyata), to make people understand the blessings of past deeds and the consequences of future actions. I compile this collection to encourage good deeds and warn against immoral behavior. Although the table of contents has only a few items, there are more than three hundred poems. The events described in these poems are all true and not fabricated. They explain the essence of Wang Fanzhi's poetry and teach the essential meanings of Ding Guo's poems. These poems do not use scriptures but use easy-to-understand language, which can not only change the minds of intelligent people but also change the attitudes of foolish people. People far and near praise these poems and encourage people to do good. Those greedy officials should not embezzle the property of the people, and those officials who hold positions without doing any work should be honest and cautious. Even if people are ignorant, they will feel sad after reading these poems. As long as you read it once and think about it three times, you will not forget it. Even the lectures of great monks are not as good as reading these poems that encourage good deeds. Unfilial sons will become filial after reading these poems; lazy daughters-in-law will serve their parents-in-law morning and evening after reading these poems. Gambling husbands and unchaste wives will feel ashamed, and travelers from all over will miss their hometowns. Lazy husbands will get up at night to work, and lazy wives will spin all night long. Facing silk fabrics, they will all feel ashamed. Knowing sin and blessing, they will work hard to cultivate and work hard to earn enough food and clothing. As long as you are single-minded and your five emotions do not change, the eastern and western states will praise these poems. As long as you read these poems carefully, stubborn and foolish people will become virtuous and good.

Looking at the people in the world, they live in villages. When someone in a family dies, the whole village comes to cry. They open their mouths to cry over other people's corpses, but they don't know that they are also close to death. Originally, they were ghosts sleeping underground, temporarily standing on the ground. They want to be like raising children, always taking care of them. The dead are buried deeply, and the later dead are buried next.

When I was rich, my wife and children treated me very well. If I took off my clothes, they would fold them for me. If I went out to do errands, they would see me off. If I came home with something, they would greet me with smiles. They circled around me like doves and loved me like parrots. Once I was temporarily poor, they would look at me differently. People have seven times of poverty, and they also have seven times of wealth. Don't just care about money and ignore human feelings, think about how you came to be in the first place.

If the whole family dies, I will have no relatives when I die. Hurry up and spend money to buy

English version: Accumulating assets and establishing memorial services for the deceased, hoping to be reborn in a good place. But after death, one has to hire people to bury them, and the money spent requires neighborhood guarantees. Let you argue with each other.

The body is like a sheep in a pen, and fate is as pitiful as a sheep. Although the sheep walks with its fur, people wear gorgeous clothes. Taking off clothes and standing naked is not as good as a sheep. Sheep are slaughtered every day, and people are also heading towards death every day. Being tricked from beginning to end is like a fat sheep. Sheep die hard, and people suffer all kinds of pain after death. After the end of life, one can only follow him, and the soul wanders in a foreign land. The rich should do more good deeds and enjoy delicious food and gorgeous clothes. Foolish people only know how to commit sins, and wise people should think carefully.

It is ridiculous that there are more foolish people and fewer wise people in the world. Don't worry about the long road to death, but greedy for the troubles of the world. Wandering in the ghost world at night, and returning to the human world at dawn. Suddenly being caught by the Yama soldiers, crying and looking for ancestors. Poverty and suffering have nowhere to escape, and can only suffer whipping and torture. It is already painful to be alive, it is better to die early.

Others laugh at my poverty, but I am happy because of poverty. Without cattle or horses, there is no need to worry about being robbed by thieves. You rich people have heavy taxes and corvée, and you are ashamed of interest. I have nowhere to be requisitioned, and I can eat my fill and stretch my legs आराम से rest.

You rich people wear gorgeous brocade robes, but are often entangled in troubles. The poor have no worries, and are comfortable wearing coarse clothes. Some foolish kings, without sons, greedily search for wealth and raise many slaves. Waiting for the messenger of death to come to the door to summon, without saying goodbye to the neighbors. After death, there are only four pieces of coffin boards and a yellow quilt. The money and slaves are enjoyed by others, and they are allowed to make other plans. Having money but not knowing how to enjoy it, coming to the underworld empty-handed, like drifting on the vast sea, carrying foolish ghosts, panicking and dying suddenly, immediately being caught by the messengers of life, with hands tied back, beaten with sticks, and escorted to the Naihe River. Kneeling in front of the Yama Palace, suffering various tortures. Every seven days after death, one has to suffer the torture of sin ghosts. With a fork on the head, being caught by the jailer, pounding with a stone mortar, grinding the body with a millstone, dying and living again, living and dying again. Confused, unable to return home. Wife and children are occupied by others, servants serve new masters, and maids follow new mistresses. The former four-horse carriage can only be watched helplessly.
