西晉沙門釋法炬奉 詔譯
聞如是:
一時佛在拘深國,王號曰優填。拘深國有逝心,名摩回提,生女端正華色世間少雙。父睹女容一國希有,名曰無比。鄰國諸王群僚豪姓靡不娉焉。父答曰:「若有君子容與女齊,吾其應之。」
佛時行在其國,逝心睹佛三十二相八十種好,身色紫金巍巍堂堂光儀無上,心喜而曰:「吾女獲匹。」歸語其妻曰:「吾為無比得婿。」促莊飾女將往也。夫妻共服飾,其女步瑤華光,珠璣瓔珞莊嚴光國,夫妻共將女至佛所。妻道見佛跡相好之文光彩之色,非世所有,知為天尊,謂其夫曰:「此人足跡文理乃爾,非世所聞斯將非凡,必自清凈無復淫慾,將不取吾女,無自辱也。」夫曰:「何以知其然?」妻因說偈言:
「淫人曳踵行, 恚者操指步, 愚者足躘地; 斯跡天人尊。」
逝心曰:「非爾女人所知,汝不樂者便還歸。」乃自將女詣佛所,稽首佛足,白佛言:「大人勤勞教授,身無供養。有是粗女,愿給箕帚。」
佛言:「汝以女為好耶?」
答曰:「生得此女顏容實好
【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 如是我聞: 一時,佛陀在拘深國(Kushinagara),當時的國王名叫優填(Udayana)。拘深國有一位名叫摩回提(Mahamati)的富豪,他生了一個女兒,容貌端莊美麗,世間少有。父親看到女兒的容貌,覺得舉國罕見,便給她取名為無比(Anupama)。鄰國的諸位國王、大臣和豪門貴族都紛紛前來求婚。父親回答說:『如果有人容貌能與我女兒相配,我就答應這門婚事。』 當時,佛陀正在這個國家游化,摩回提看到佛陀的三十二相和八十種好,身體呈現紫金色,巍峨莊嚴,光芒無比,心中歡喜,說道:『我的女兒有歸宿了。』他回家告訴妻子說:『我為無比找到了夫婿。』於是催促打扮女兒,準備前往。夫妻倆一同為女兒梳妝打扮,女兒行走時,步履生輝,珠光寶氣,光彩照人。夫妻倆一同帶著女兒來到佛陀所在之處。妻子在路上看到佛陀的足跡,紋理清晰,光彩奪目,非世間所有,知道這是天尊,便對丈夫說:『此人的足跡紋理如此,非世間所見,此人必定非凡,必定清凈無染,沒有淫慾,恐怕不會娶我們的女兒,我們不要自取其辱。』丈夫說:『你怎麼知道的?』妻子於是說偈道: 『淫慾之人拖著腳跟走路, 嗔恚之人用腳尖走路, 愚癡之人腳掌拖地; 這樣的足跡,是天人尊者。』 摩回提說:『這不是你女人所能知道的,你不願意去就回去吧。』於是自己帶著女兒來到佛陀面前,頂禮佛足,對佛陀說:『大人您辛勤教化,我們沒有供養。我有一個粗陋的女兒,願意讓她為您執持箕帚。』 佛陀說:『你覺得你的女兒很美嗎?』 他回答說:『生下的這個女兒,容貌確實很好。』
【English Translation】 English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the country of Kushinagara, where the king was named Udayana. In Kushinagara, there was a wealthy man named Mahamati, who had a daughter of exceptional beauty, rare in the world. Her father, seeing her beauty, considered her unparalleled in the country and named her Anupama. Kings, ministers, and nobles from neighboring countries all sought her hand in marriage. Her father replied, 'If there is a gentleman whose appearance matches my daughter's, I will agree to the marriage.' At that time, the Buddha was traveling in that country. Mahamati saw the Buddha's thirty-two marks and eighty minor characteristics, his body the color of purple gold, majestic and radiant, and was filled with joy, saying, 'My daughter has found a match.' He returned home and told his wife, 'I have found a husband for Anupama.' He urged her to adorn their daughter and prepare to go. The couple dressed their daughter, and as she walked, she shone with radiance, adorned with pearls and jewels, illuminating the country. Together, the couple brought their daughter to where the Buddha was. On the way, the wife saw the Buddha's footprints, with clear patterns and radiant colors, unlike anything in the world. Knowing that this was a celestial being, she said to her husband, 'The patterns of this person's footprints are extraordinary, unlike anything seen in the world. This person must be extraordinary, pure and free from defilement, without lust. He probably won't marry our daughter, and we shouldn't humiliate ourselves.' Her husband asked, 'How do you know that?' The wife then spoke a verse: 'A lustful person walks with dragging heels, A wrathful person walks on tiptoes, A foolish person drags their feet on the ground; Such footprints belong to a celestial being.' Mahamati said, 'This is beyond your understanding as a woman. If you don't want to go, then go back.' He then took his daughter to the Buddha, bowed at his feet, and said to the Buddha, 'Great One, you work hard to teach, and we have no offerings. I have a humble daughter, and I wish to offer her to serve you.' The Buddha said, 'Do you think your daughter is beautiful?' He replied, 'This daughter I have is indeed very beautiful.'
世間無雙,諸國王豪姓多有求者不以應之。竊見大人光色巍巍非世所見,貪得供養故,宜自歸耳。」
佛言:「此女之好爲著何許?」
逝心曰:「從頭至足周遍觀之無不好也。」
佛言:「惑哉肉眼,吾觀之,從頭至足無一好耶。若頭上有發,但是毛象馬之尾亦皆爾也;發下有髑髏,但是骨屠家豬頭骨亦爾也;頭中有腦者如泥鯹臊送,鼻下之著地莫能蹈者,目者是脆決之純汁,鼻中有涕,口但有唾,腹藏肝肺皆亦鯹臊,腸胃膀胱但成屎尿腐臭難論,腹為幃囊裹諸不凈,四支手足骨骨相拄筋連皮韜,但恃氣息以動作之,譬若木人機關作之,既畢解列其體節節,相離手足狼藉。人亦如是,有何等好而云少雙?昔者吾在貝多樹下,第六魔天王莊飾三女,顏容華色天中無比非徒此論,欲以壞吾道意,我為說身中穢惡,即皆化成老母形壞不復,慚愧而去。今是屎囊欲何所戀?急將還去,吾不取也。」
逝心聞佛所說,忽然慚恥無辭復言,又白佛言:「若仁不取者,更以妻優填王可乎不?」佛不答焉。逝心即送女與優填王,王獲女大悅,拜父為太傅,為女興宮,伎樂千人以給侍之。王正後師事佛,得須陀洹道。此女譖之於王,王惑其言以百箭射其後。后見箭不懼,都無恚怒,一意念佛慈心長跪向王,箭

【English Translation】 English version: There is no one in the world as beautiful as her. Many kings and noble families have sought to marry her, but none have been accepted. I secretly observed that your radiance and majesty are extraordinary, unlike anything seen in the world. I am greedy for the opportunity to offer her to you, so I believe she should be given to you.' The Buddha said, 'Where do you see this woman's beauty?' Shixin replied, 'From head to toe, I have carefully observed her, and there is no part that is not beautiful.' The Buddha said, 'How deluded are your physical eyes! I see her, from head to toe, there is nothing beautiful. On her head, there is hair, but that is just hair, like the tail of a horse or an elephant; under the hair is a skull, but that is just bone, like the skull of a pig from a butcher; inside the head is brain matter, which is like foul-smelling mud; below the nose is filth that cannot be stepped on; the eyes are fragile and easily broken liquid; in the nose is mucus; in the mouth is only saliva; the abdomen contains the liver and lungs, which are also foul-smelling; the intestines and bladder are filled with feces and urine, which are putrid and difficult to describe; the abdomen is like a bag, containing all sorts of unclean things; the four limbs, hands, and feet, bones support each other, tendons connect, and skin covers them, only relying on breath to move, like a wooden puppet, operated by mechanisms. Once the mechanisms stop, the body will fall apart, with hands and feet scattered everywhere. People are the same, what is so beautiful about them that they should be praised as unparalleled in the world? In the past, when I was under the Bodhi tree, the sixth demon king, Mara, used three beautifully adorned women to tempt me. Their appearance and beauty were unparalleled in the heavens, far surpassing this woman, intending to destroy my resolve. I explained to them the filthiness of the body, and they immediately transformed into old women, ugly and repulsive, and left in shame. Now, what is there to be attached to in this bag of excrement and urine? Quickly take her away, I will not accept her.' Upon hearing what the Buddha said, Shixin was immediately ashamed and speechless. He then said to the Buddha, 'If you, the benevolent one, will not accept her, then is it acceptable to marry her to King Udayana?' The Buddha did not answer. Shixin then sent the woman to King Udayana. The king was very pleased to receive her, appointed Shixin's father as Grand Tutor, built a palace for the woman, and provided her with a thousand musicians and dancers to serve her. The queen of King Udayana followed the Buddha and attained the state of Srotapanna. This woman slandered the queen to King Udayana, and the king, deceived by her words, shot a hundred arrows at the queen. The queen, seeing the arrows, was not afraid, had no anger, and with a single-minded devotion to the Buddha, knelt towards the king with a compassionate heart. The arrows
皆繞后三匝還住王前,百箭皆爾。王乃自驚暢然而懼,即駕白象金車馳詣佛所,未到下車避從步進稽首佛足,長跪自陳曰:「吾有重咎在三尊,所以彼淫妖從欲興邪,于佛聖眾每一惡念,以箭百枚射佛弟子,如事陳之睹之心懼,唯佛至真無量之慈,白衣弟子慈力乃爾,豈況無上正真佛乎?我今首過歸命三尊,唯佛弘慈原赦其咎。」
佛笑曰:「善哉王!覺惡悔過,此明人行也,吾受王善意。」
王稽首,如是至三,佛亦三受之。王又頭面著地,退就坐曰:「稟氣匈頑忿戾自恣無忍辱心,三毒不除惡行快意,順女妖邪不知其惡,自惟壽終必入地獄,愿佛加哀,廣說女惡魑魅之態,入其羅網鮮能自拔,吾聞其禍必以自誡,國民鉅細得以改操。」
佛言:「用此問為?且說余義。」
王曰:「餘事異日說之不晚,女亂惑意兇禍之大,不聞其禍何緣遠之?愿佛具為吾釋地獄之變及女人之穢。」
佛言:「具聽!男子有淫之惡,卻睹女妖。」
王曰:「善愿受明教。」
佛言:「具聽!男子有四惡,急所當知。世有淫夫,恒想睹女思聞妖聲,遠舍正法疑真信邪,淫網所綶沒在盲冥,為欲所使如奴畏主;貪樂女色,不覺九孔惡露之臭穢,渾沌欲中,如豬處溷不覺其臭快以為安,不計后

【English Translation】 English version: They all circled behind (the Buddha) three times and then stopped in front of the king, each arrow doing the same. The king was thus shocked, elated, and fearful. He immediately drove his golden chariot pulled by a white elephant to where the Buddha was. Before arriving, he got out of the chariot, avoided his attendants, and walked forward, bowing his head to the Buddha's feet. He knelt and confessed, saying: 'I have committed a grave offense against the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). That is why that licentious demoness was able to indulge her evil desires. For every evil thought I had towards the Buddha and the holy assembly, I shot a hundred arrows at the Buddha's disciples. As I have described, seeing this fills me with fear. Only the Buddha is truly compassionate and boundless. Even the compassion of a lay disciple is so great, how much more so the supreme and truly enlightened Buddha? I now confess my sins and take refuge in the Three Jewels. I hope the Buddha will extend his compassion and forgive my transgressions.' The Buddha smiled and said, 'Well done, O King! To realize one's evil deeds and repent is the act of a wise person. I accept your good intentions.' The king bowed his head, doing so three times, and the Buddha accepted his repentance three times. The king then prostrated himself, retreated to his seat, and said: 'I am by nature foolish, irritable, and self-indulgent, lacking in patience. The three poisons (greed, hatred, and delusion) have not been eliminated. I find pleasure in doing evil, and I followed the demoness's evil ways, not knowing they were evil. I think that after my death, I will surely fall into hell. I hope the Buddha will have compassion and extensively explain the evil and demonic forms of women. Once caught in their net, it is difficult to escape. Hearing of these calamities, I will surely use them to warn myself, so that everyone in the country, great and small, can change their behavior.' The Buddha said, 'Why do you ask about this? Let's talk about other principles first.' The king said, 'It is not too late to talk about other things later. The harm of women's bewitchment and the great calamities they bring are immense. If we do not understand these calamities, how can we stay away from them? I hope the Buddha will explain in detail the changes in hell and the impurity of women.' The Buddha said, 'Listen carefully! It is because men have the evil habit of lust that they see the allure of women.' The king said, 'I am willing to receive your teachings.' The Buddha said, 'Listen carefully! Men have four evil habits that they should know as soon as possible. There are lustful men in the world who always think about seeing women, want to hear seductive voices, stay away from the true Dharma, doubt the truth and believe in falsehoods. They are bound by the net of lust, submerged in darkness, driven by desire, like slaves fearing their masters. They are greedy for the beauty of women, not realizing that the filth from their nine orifices (eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and excretory organs) is foul-smelling. In the murky desires, they are like pigs in a cesspool, not feeling the stench but finding it comfortable. They do not consider the consequences.'
當在無澤之獄受痛無極;注心在淫,啖其涕唾玩其膿血,珍之如玉甘之如蜜;故曰欲態之士。此為一惡態也。又親之養子懷妊生育,稚得長大勤苦難論,到子成人懼家竭財膝行肘步,因媒表情致彼為妻,若在異域尋而追之,不問遠近不避勤苦,注意在淫捐忘親老,既得為妻貴之如寶,欲私相娛樂惡見父母,信其妖言或致斗訟,不惟身所從生孤親無量之恩。斯謂二惡態也。又人處世勤苦疲勞躬自致財,本自誠信敬道之意,尊戴沙門梵志之心,覺世非常,佈施為福。取妻之後,情惑淫慾愚蔽自擁,背真向邪專由女色,若有佈施之意,雖欲發言相呼女色,絕清凈行更成小人,不識佛經之戒禍福之歸,茍為淫色投身羅網,必墮惡道終而不改。斯謂三惡態也。又為人子不惟養恩,治生致財不以養親,但以東西廣求淫路,懷持寶物招人婦女,或殺六畜淫祀鬼神,飲酒歌舞合會之後,至求方便更相招呼,以遂姦情,及其獲偶喜無以喻,淫結縛著無所復識。當爾之時唯此為樂,不覺惡露之臭穢地獄之苦痛,一則可笑二則可畏,譬若狂犬不知其非。斯謂四惡態也。」佛言:「男子有是四惡,用墮三塗,當審遠此態免苦耳。復聽說女人之惡。」佛便說偈言:
「已為欲所使, 放意不能安, 習施於非法, 將何以為賢? 欲為
【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本:當在無澤地獄遭受無盡的痛苦時;心念專注于淫慾,吞食他們的涕唾,玩弄他們的膿血,珍視它們如同美玉,覺得它們甘甜如同蜂蜜;所以說這是沉溺於慾望的人的狀態。這是第一種惡劣的狀態。還有,父母養育子女,從懷孕到生育,幼年時辛勤勞苦難以言說,等到子女長大成人,擔心家財耗盡,不得不低聲下氣、卑躬屈膝,通過媒人表達愛意,娶妻成家,即使在遙遠的地方也要尋找追逐,不問遠近,不避勞苦,心思只在淫慾上,忘記了年邁的父母,一旦娶妻,就視若珍寶,只想私下享樂,厭惡見到父母,聽信妻子的妖言,甚至導致爭吵訴訟,不念及自身所從來的父母的無量恩情。這被稱為第二種惡劣的狀態。還有,人在世上勤勞辛苦,親自掙得財富,本來是出於誠信敬道的意願,尊重沙門(出家修道者)和梵志(婆羅門教修行者)的心,覺悟到世事無常,佈施是爲了積福。娶妻之後,被情慾迷惑,愚昧地自我封閉,背離真理走向邪惡,一心只想著女色,如果有佈施的念頭,即使想說出口,也會被女色所阻礙,清凈的修行變得更加低下,不認識佛經的戒律和禍福的歸宿,甘願投身於羅網,必定墮入惡道,最終也不悔改。這被稱為第三種惡劣的狀態。還有,作為子女,不念及父母的養育之恩,辛勤勞作掙得的財富不用來贍養父母,卻用來四處尋求淫慾之路,懷揣寶物去勾引婦女,或者殺害六畜祭祀鬼神,飲酒歌舞聚會之後,甚至尋求方便互相勾引,以滿足淫慾,等到得到伴侶,喜悅之情難以言表,被淫慾束縛,什麼都不知道了。在那個時候只覺得這是快樂,不覺得污穢的惡露和地獄的痛苦,這既可笑又可畏,就像瘋狗不知道自己的錯誤一樣。這被稱為第四種惡劣的狀態。」佛說:「男子有這四種惡行,會因此墮入三惡道,應當謹慎遠離這些惡行,才能免受痛苦。再聽我說說女人的惡行。」佛陀於是說了偈語:

【English Translation】 English version: When suffering endless pain in the Avici Hell; with minds focused on lust, they consume their snot and saliva, play with their pus and blood, cherishing them like jade and finding them as sweet as honey; hence, they are called those in the state of lust. This is the first evil state. Furthermore, parents raise their children, from pregnancy to birth, the hardships of their early years are beyond words, and when the children grow up, they fear the depletion of family wealth, having to be humble and submissive, expressing affection through matchmakers to take a wife, even in distant lands they seek and pursue, regardless of distance or hardship, their minds are only on lust, forgetting their aging parents, once they take a wife, they treat her like a treasure, only wanting to enjoy private pleasures, hating to see their parents, believing their wife's deceptive words, even leading to quarrels and lawsuits, not remembering the immeasurable kindness of the parents from whom they came. This is called the second evil state. Moreover, people in the world work hard and toil, earning wealth themselves, originally with the intention of being honest and respectful of the Way, respecting the Shramanas (ascetics) and Brahmins (Brahmin practitioners), realizing the impermanence of the world, and giving alms to accumulate merit. After taking a wife, they are deluded by lust, foolishly self-enclosed, turning away from truth towards evil, their minds only on women, if they have the intention of giving alms, even if they want to speak out, they are hindered by women, their pure practice becomes even more degraded, not recognizing the precepts of the Buddhist scriptures and the consequences of good and evil, willingly throwing themselves into the net, they will surely fall into evil paths, and ultimately not repent. This is called the third evil state. Furthermore, as children, they do not remember the kindness of their parents in raising them, the wealth they work hard to earn is not used to support their parents, but is used to seek paths of lust everywhere, carrying treasures to seduce women, or killing six kinds of animals to sacrifice to ghosts and gods, after drinking, singing, and dancing gatherings, they even seek ways to seduce each other, to satisfy their lust, and when they find a partner, their joy is beyond words, they are bound by lust, and know nothing else. At that time, they only feel this is happiness, not feeling the foulness of the discharge and the pain of hell, this is both laughable and fearful, like a mad dog not knowing its mistakes. This is called the fourth evil state.」 The Buddha said, 「Men who have these four evil deeds will fall into the three evil realms, they should be careful to stay away from these evil states to avoid suffering. 畜生行, 以欲還自殃, 溷蟲在臭中, 不知為處難。 如蟲在冥中, 不知東以西, 結著于淫慾, 惡此亦蟲論。 淫既不見道, 日夜種罪根, 現世君臣亂, 上下為迷昏, 王法為錯亂, 正法為迷樊, 農夫舍常業, 賈人為珍連。 現世更牢獄, 死復入太山, 當受百種毒, 其痛難可當。 洋銅灌其口, 山連笮其身, 此輩有百數, 難可一一陳。 常在三惡道, 宛轉如車輪, 若世時有佛, 而已不得聞。 女人最為惡, 難與為因緣, 恩愛一縛著, 牽人入罪門。 女人為何好? 但是屎尿囊, 何不諦系視, 為此而狂荒? 其內甚臭穢, 外為嚴飾容, 家有含毒蝎, 劇如蛇以龍。 譬如錦韜牟, 羅縠綶鋒铓, 愚者睹其表, 玩之以自殃。 智者覺而舍, 癡者致死傷, 淫慾亦如是, 抱刃以自喪。 睹新即厭故, 所樂亦無常, 言為刀斧截, 笑為棘以荊。 內懷臭穢毒, 飾外以華香, 癡人貪其味, 不惟后受殃。 譬若鴆毒藥, 以和甘露漿, 所向無不壞, 飲之皆仆僵。 亦如薪得火, 草木被重霜, 睹表不計里,

Lost in lust, they see not the path, sowing seeds of sin day and night, Leading to chaos between rulers and subjects, confusion above and below, Distorting the laws of the kingdom, obscuring the true Dharma, Farmers abandon their fields, merchants chase after rare treasures. In this life, they face imprisonment, and after death, they enter Tai Mountain (hell), They will suffer a hundred kinds of torments, pains unbearable. Molten copper will be poured into their mouths, their bodies crushed by Shanlian (a torture device), These sufferings are countless, too many to list one by one. They constantly revolve in the three evil paths (hell, hungry ghosts, animals), like a turning wheel, Even if a Buddha appears in the world, they will not hear the Dharma. Women are the worst, difficult to form karmic connections with, Once bound by love, they drag people into the gates of sin. What is good about women? They are but bags of excrement and urine, Why not look closely, instead of being crazed and confused by them? Their insides are foul and stinking, while their outsides are adorned with finery, Like a venomous scorpion in the house, they are as dangerous as snakes and dragons. Like a spear wrapped in brocade, or a sharp blade covered in silk, The foolish see only the surface, playing with it to their own ruin. The wise awaken and abandon it, while the foolish suffer death and injury, Lust is the same, like embracing a blade to one's own destruction. They tire of the old for the new, what they enjoy is impermanent, Sweet words are like axes and knives, laughter like thorns and brambles. Their hearts harbor foul poison, while their outsides are adorned with fragrant flowers, The deluded crave its taste, not considering the suffering that follows. Like poison mixed with nectar, It destroys all it touches, those who drink it fall dead. Like firewood meeting fire, or plants covered in heavy frost, They see the surface but not the inside,
是為最非詳。 女毒甚於是, 草乃見形傷, 絕欲以求道, 故有淫慾情。 其形甚易見, 癡人情不絕, 羅網四面張, 去道如絲髮。 人本清凈種, 如魚處深淵, 智者乃自覺, 著網不得還。 欲網甚於是, 結縛甚欲堅, 投身置荊棘, 可得脫其身。 譬若饑猿猴, 望見熟甘果, 專心投色慾, 是輩百向墮。 亦如魚食鉤, 飛蛾入燈火, 愚者見歡喜, 不惟后受禍。」
佛說如是,優填王歡喜,即以頭面著地,白佛言:「實從生以來不聞女人之惡乃爾,男子悖亂隨之墮罪,但不知故不制心意。從今已后終身自悔,歸命三尊不敢復犯。」為佛作禮,歡喜而去。

【English Translation】 English version This is the most incomplete description. The poison of women is far greater than this, just as plants show their wounds. If one cuts off desires to seek the path, there would be no lustful feelings. The form of lust is easily seen, but foolish people cannot cut off this emotion. The net of desire is spread on all sides, and leaving the path is as weak as a strand of hair. Human nature is originally a pure seed, like fish living in a deep abyss. The wise are aware, but once caught in the net, they cannot return. The net of desire is far greater than this, and the bondage is even stronger than desire. Even if one throws oneself into thorns, one might still escape. It's like a hungry monkey, seeing ripe, sweet fruit. Focusing solely on reaching for it, such people often fall. It's also like a fish swallowing a hook, or a moth flying into a flame. The foolish only see the immediate joy, not considering the misfortune that follows.
After the Buddha spoke these words, King Udayana was very pleased. He immediately touched the ground with his head and face, and said to the Buddha: 'Truly, since birth, I have never heard that the evil of women is so great. Men are rebellious and confused, falling into sin because of it. It is only because I did not know that I did not control my mind. From now on, I will repent for the rest of my life, take refuge in the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), and dare not commit these sins again.' Then he bowed to the Buddha and left with joy.
