西天中印度摩伽陀國那爛陀寺三藏傳教大師賜紫沙門臣法天奉 詔譯

如是我聞:

一時佛在憍閃彌瞿尸羅林,與大苾芻眾五百人俱,及諸菩薩摩訶薩眾。

是時無比摩建你迦女而起瞋恚,憎嫉舍摩嚩底妃后,于日子王邊說言:「天子知耶?舍摩嚩底妃后等五百女,共其沙門而行淫慾。我今告言,要天子知,實難容恕。」

是時日子王聞無比摩建你迦女說已,瞋怒至極,意不可忍,擬殺舍摩嚩底夫人,遂以手執弓放箭便射。是時舍摩嚩底夫人入慈心定,王所放箭上虛空中發生火焰,其焰熾盛,其箭卻回,奔日子王前於左邊而住——佛為密護,箭不著身亦無損動。

是時日子王心生驚怖,身毛皆豎,而便倒地,又復還起。問舍摩嚩底夫人而說偈言:

「汝復為天女、  鬼女、羅剎女、  巘馱婆女等?  我問如是說。  汝持云何行?  未見未曾聞,  亦復不曾知。  未曾有女人,  器仗不能傷。  我有精進力,  善學于弓箭,  我箭不空發,  未曾虛放箭。  如我所要射,  獼

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Great Vehicle Sutra of King Udayana's Questions Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Dharma-deva, a Śramaṇa bestowed with a purple robe, from Nālandā Monastery in Magadha, Central India, under Imperial Decree. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Ghoṣira Grove in Kauśāmbī, together with five hundred great Bhikṣus and many Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas. At that time, Anupamā-Māgandhikā, a woman of unparalleled beauty, arose with anger and jealousy towards Queen Śyāmāvatī. She said to King Udayana, 『Does Your Majesty know? Queen Śyāmāvatī and her five hundred women are engaging in sexual misconduct with those Śramaṇas. I tell you now, this is truly intolerable.』 At that time, King Udayana, upon hearing Anupamā-Māgandhikā』s words, became extremely enraged and could not bear it. He intended to kill Lady Śyāmāvatī, so he took up his bow and shot an arrow. At that moment, Lady Śyāmāvatī entered the Samadhi of Loving-kindness. The arrow shot by the king burst into flames in the sky. The flames were intense, and the arrow turned back, stopping to the left of King Udayana—this was due to the Buddha』s secret protection. The arrow did not touch his body, nor did it cause any harm. At that time, King Udayana was terrified, his hair stood on end, and he fell to the ground, then got up again. He asked Lady Śyāmāvatī and spoke in verse: 『Are you a celestial woman, a ghost woman, a Rākṣasī, or a Gandharva woman? I ask you this. What practice do you uphold? I have never seen, never heard, nor ever known of such a thing. Never has there been a woman whom weapons cannot harm. I am vigorous and skilled in archery. My arrows never miss, never are shot in vain. What I aim at, even monkeys cannot escape, so why does my arrow not harm you?』


猴及飛禽,  人身兼射垛,  而未無所中。  如我今放箭,  卻回面前住,  不傷損我身。  我今歸命汝,  愿救我苦惱。  審聽誠實言,  我欲故殺汝。  舍過勿生瞋,  汝念為好事,  令我離苦惱,  永不復如是。」

爾時舍摩嚩底夫人答日子王,即說偈言:

「我非是天女,  亦非健闥女,  非鬼、非羅剎,  是舍摩嚩底。  我作佛弟子,  為彼大慈悲,  故我心行善。  發心世尊處,  俱胝百千劫,  觀彼善慈悲,  故我行慈行。  女色所縛人,  見彼如實者,  若苗稼成熟,  而被雷雹壞。  若離女色染,  我彼俱愛樂,  一切諸世尊,  遠離於淫慾。  又聞世尊說: 『佛與菩薩眾,  緣覺及聲聞,  悉皆離女色。  愚者不能知,  普被魔羅降,  離女色染污,  能得身安樂,  究竟得解脫。』  無智諸眾生,  愛慾無遠離,  作罪業無邊,  墮落三惡道,  無底慾火坑,  猛焰熾不滅。  有智樂解脫,  不為女色染。  見已便纏縛,  詐言虛適悅,  墜墮于眾生,  死入險惡道。  勿聽女人言,  亦不忿怒我,  意願生歡喜,  發心世尊處。  汝欲求見佛,  我與大

【English Translation】 English version 'Like monkeys and birds, and human bodies all used as targets for shooting, yet none were hit. Just as I now release an arrow, it returns to me without harming my body. I now surrender to you, hoping you can save me from suffering. Please listen carefully to my sincere words, I originally intended to kill you intentionally. Please let go of past mistakes and do not be angry, what you think is a good thing, allowing me to escape suffering and never do such a thing again.' At that time, Lady Syamavati (Syamavati, a name) answered King Udayana (Udayana, a name), and spoke the following verses: 'I am not a celestial maiden, nor a Gandharva (Gandharva, a celestial being) maiden, not a ghost, nor a Rakshasa (Rakshasa, a demon), I am Syamavati. I am a disciple of the Buddha, for the sake of that great compassion, therefore I practice good deeds in my heart. I made a vow at the place of the World Honored One, for countless eons, observing that good compassion, therefore I practice the path of compassion. Those who are bound by the allure of women, seeing the truth, are like mature crops destroyed by hail. If one can stay away from the defilement of women, both I and they will feel joy, all the World Honored Ones are far from lust. And I heard the World Honored One say: 『Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas and Sravakas, all stay away from women. Foolish people cannot understand, they are universally subdued by Mara (Mara, the demon king), only by staying away from the defilement of women can one obtain peace of body and mind, and ultimately achieve liberation.』 Sentient beings without wisdom, do not stay away from desire, create boundless karmic offenses, fall into the three evil realms, enter the bottomless pit of fire, where fierce flames burn without ceasing. Those with wisdom delight in liberation, and are not defiled by the allure of women. Seeing it, they are immediately entangled, falsely speaking of pleasure, causing sentient beings to fall, and after death enter dangerous evil paths. Do not listen to the words of women, nor be angry with me, I hope that joy arises in your heart, and make a vow at the place of the World Honored One. If you wish to see the Buddha, I will go with you.'


王去,  到彼汝諦聽,  必說微妙法。」

爾時日子王告舍摩嚩底夫人:「正當是時。汝意速疾詣世尊所。」

王及臣民侍從圍繞,見大牟尼巍巍堂堂,如大金山,光明焰赫吉祥莊嚴,又見菩薩摩訶薩,及諸苾芻、苾芻尼、塢波斯迦、塢波索迦、天龍、藥叉、犍闥婆、阿素啰、孽嚕茶、緊那啰、摩護啰誐、人非人等,圍繞世尊。

爾時大王頭面作禮,而白佛言:「世尊!我有未曾有事,先未聞見,今詣佛所,世尊慈悲與我解說。」

世尊告言:「大王!汝說未曾有事。」

王復白言:「今日我宮有淫慾因緣,無比摩建你迦女,生譭謗心,言:『舍摩嚩底夫人與聲聞沙門而行淫事。』我聞此言瞋恨至極,殺舍摩嚩底夫人,以箭便射,于其箭上而出火焰赫奕熾盛,卻回我身左邊而住,亦不傷損我身。」

舍摩嚩底夫人,禮世尊足,說如是言:「彼王問我:『為復天女、龍女、犍闥婆女、比舍際女、鬼女、羅剎女?汝修持何行,而乃如是?』而答王言:『我是大王夫人,非是天女、龍女、健闥婆女、比舍際女、羅剎女。』世尊!如來、應供、正等正覺,弟子心善純凈為如彼天。」

是時舍摩嚩底夫人,稱讚世尊功德:「我佛如來有如是應正等覺,有如是大慈大悲,具大福慧

【English Translation】 English version 'Go there, listen carefully, and you will surely hear the subtle Dharma.' At that time, King Udayana said to Lady Shamavati: 'Now is the right time. You should quickly go to the World Honored One.' The king and his ministers, surrounded by attendants, saw the Great Sage (Mahamuni), majestic and dignified, like a great golden mountain, with radiant light, auspicious and adorned. They also saw Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, as well as bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, upasikas, deva-nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, surrounding the World Honored One. At that time, the great king bowed his head to the Buddha's feet and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! I have encountered an unprecedented event, something I have never heard or seen before. Today I come to the Buddha, hoping that the World Honored One will compassionately explain it to me.' The World Honored One said: 'Great King! Tell me about the unprecedented event you have encountered.' The king replied: 'Today, in my palace, there was a cause of lustful desire. A woman named Magandhika developed a slanderous mind, saying: 『Lady Shamavati is engaging in sexual acts with sravaka-samanas.』 Upon hearing this, I was filled with extreme anger and wanted to kill Lady Shamavati. I shot an arrow at her, and flames erupted from the arrow, burning intensely, but it turned back to the left side of my body without harming me.' Lady Shamavati, bowing at the feet of the World Honored One, said: 'The king asked me: 『Are you a deva-woman, a naga-woman, a gandharva-woman, a pisaci-woman, a ghost-woman, or a raksasi-woman? What practices have you cultivated to be like this?』 I replied to the king: 『I am the king's wife, not a deva-woman, a naga-woman, a gandharva-woman, a pisaci-woman, or a raksasi-woman.』 World Honored One! The Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, my disciple's heart is good and pure, like that of a deva.' At this time, Lady Shamavati praised the merits of the World Honored One: 'My Buddha, the Tathagata, has such Samyaksambuddha wisdom, such great compassion, and is endowed with great blessings and wisdom.'


,成大威德,得大自在。何以故?如來、應、正等覺為天人師,愿鑒斯誠。」

爾時日子王,對佛及苾芻眾前,懺悔發露:「我等由如愚童,如心迷亂,如在黑暗,如無善根,我念如來聲聞,而生譭謗。善哉,世尊!愿解疑悔,我等受持。」

世尊說言:「汝發起慈心受持戒行,廣利有情。」

日子王即從坐起,合掌恭敬。

佛言:「大王!汝但安坐。」

於時日子王頭面作禮,卻坐一面。日子王白佛言:「世尊!我心勇猛,聽女人言,造罪業苦,知自命終墮于地獄。善哉,世尊!女人之過唯愿說之。」

世尊告言:「女人行業有其多種,惑亂有情,詐現異相,諂媚虛誑,心不真實,顛倒思惟諂曲詐偽,舉動施為強求親近,牽繫有情恒行邪行,汝須省覺。」

王言:「世尊!愿賜慈悲,愿聽所說。如我此後不近女人,亦不由女人而造罪業,既不造罪,不墮地獄。世尊!如我長夜利益安樂一切眾生。」

佛言:「如是如是。」

複次日子王白言:「世尊!我于佛邊聞斯欲義,實由女人得其惡報。」

佛言:「大王!女色深固,生冤家之父母,生暴惡之父母,若起愛樂墮于地獄;是故女人有如是之過。」

佛言:「大王!若較量丈夫淫慾之過,汝后

【English Translation】 English version: Achieving great power and virtue, attaining great freedom. Why is this so? Because the Tathagata (Buddha), the Arhat (Worthy One), the Samyak-sambuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One) is the teacher of gods and humans, may you witness our sincerity. At that time, King Rizi, in front of the Buddha and the assembly of Bhikshus (monks), confessed and revealed: 'We are like foolish children, our minds are confused, as if in darkness, as if without good roots. We thought of the Tathagata's Shravakas (disciples), and yet gave rise to slander. Excellent, World Honored One! May you resolve our doubts and regrets, we are willing to accept and uphold your teachings.' The World Honored One said: 'You should arouse a compassionate heart, uphold the precepts, and widely benefit all sentient beings.' King Rizi immediately rose from his seat, joined his palms in reverence. The Buddha said: 'Great King, please be seated.' At this time, King Rizi bowed his head to the ground in prostration, then sat to one side. King Rizi said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! My mind was reckless, I listened to the words of women, committed sinful deeds, and know that after my life ends, I will fall into hell. Excellent, World Honored One! Please speak of the faults of women.' The World Honored One told him: 'The actions of women are of many kinds, they confuse and disturb sentient beings, falsely display different appearances, are flattering and deceitful, their hearts are not true, they think perversely, are flattering and fraudulent, their actions and behaviors are all to forcefully seek closeness, they bind sentient beings, and constantly engage in evil practices, you must be aware of this.' The King said: 'World Honored One! May you grant compassion, and allow me to speak. If from now on I do not approach women, nor commit sinful deeds because of women, since I do not commit sins, I will not fall into hell. World Honored One! May I for a long time benefit and bring peace to all sentient beings.' The Buddha said: 'It is so, it is so.' King Rizi again said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! I have heard from the Buddha about the meaning of desire, and indeed it is because of women that one receives evil retribution.' The Buddha said: 'Great King! The allure of women is deeply entrenched, it is the source of parents who become enemies, it is the source of parents who are violent and evil, if one develops attachment to the allure of women, one will fall into hell; therefore, women have such faults.' The Buddha said: 'Great King! If you compare and measure the faults of men's lust, you will later'


世父母眷屬亦有其過。」

日子王白佛言:「世尊!善哉,善哉!丈夫之過與我解說,云何丈夫之過,父母眷屬亦有其過?」

佛言:「大王!諦聽,諦聽!善思念之!我為汝說。」

世尊告言:「大王!若丈夫之過有其四種。」

大王問言:「四過云何?」

世尊答言:「大王!若丈夫耽著淫慾,被淫慾迷醉,由迷醉故,情意顛倒,由顛倒故,于其女人深生愛樂,于苾芻眾中有持戒德行沙門、婆羅門,不欲見聞。由不欲見聞持戒德行沙門、婆羅門故,亦不親近,亦不歸依,亦不供養,于無戒無行沙門、婆羅門,亦復遠離。又無信根,不修德行,不行佈施,全無智慧,寡聞薄德,我慢貢高,行鬼神行。又復親近無智,貪著惡法,樂著臭穢,遠離善友,縱生天上人間,于自身命恒時呵毀。于沙門、婆羅門,不作護摩,于佛法僧,而復遠離,于涅槃果德,而所棄背,長時憶念女人倡妓歌舞、飲酒、談笑,如是纏縛而覆命終,墮在眾合、黑繩、等活、號叫、大號叫、炎熱、極炎熱阿鼻地獄,受種種苦。從地獄出生焰魔羅界;畜趣中生,為師子虎狼、諸惡禽獸;乃至孽路茶身,止鐵叉樹。大王!若丈夫如是行愚法行,獲斯惡報,此是丈夫初過。」

爾時世尊而說偈言:

「淫慾臭穢根

日子王(Rizhi Wang)對佛說:『世尊!說得好,說得好!請您為我解釋丈夫的過錯,為什麼說丈夫有過錯,父母和親屬也有過錯呢?』

佛說:『大王!仔細聽,仔細聽!好好思考!我為你解說。』

世尊告訴日子王:『大王!丈夫的過錯有四種。』

大王問道:『是哪四種過錯呢?』

世尊回答說:『大王!如果丈夫沉迷於淫慾,被淫慾迷惑,因為迷惑的緣故,情意顛倒,因為顛倒的緣故,對女人產生深深的愛戀,對於持戒有德行的比丘(Bichu)眾、沙門(Shamen)、婆羅門(Poluomen),不願意見到和聽到。因為不願意見到和聽到持戒有德行的沙門、婆羅門,所以也不親近,也不皈依,也不供養,對於沒有戒律沒有德行的沙門、婆羅門,也同樣遠離。又沒有信根,不修德行,不行佈施,完全沒有智慧,見識淺薄,德行淺薄,我慢貢高,行鬼神之事。又親近沒有智慧的人,貪戀惡法,喜歡污穢,遠離善友,即使投生到天上人間,也常常呵責自己的生命。對於沙門、婆羅門,不做護摩(Humo),對於佛法僧三寶,也遠離,對於涅槃(Nirvana)的果德,也拋棄背離,長久地思念女人的歌舞、飲酒、談笑,像這樣被纏縛而死去,墮入眾合地獄(Zhonghe Diyu)、黑繩地獄(Heisheng Diyu)、等活地獄(Denghuo Diyu)、號叫地獄(Haojiao Diyu)、大號叫地獄(Dahaojiao Diyu)、炎熱地獄(Yanre Diyu)、極炎熱地獄(Jiyanre Diyu)和阿鼻地獄(Abi Diyu),遭受種種痛苦。從地獄出生后,進入焰魔羅界(Yanmoluo Jie);在畜生道中,成為獅子、老虎、狼等各種惡禽猛獸;甚至成為孽路茶(Nielucha)身,被釘在鐵叉樹上。大王!如果丈夫像這樣行愚癡之法,就會獲得這樣的惡報,這是丈夫的第一種過錯。』

這時,世尊說了偈語:

『淫慾是臭穢的根源』

【English Translation】 English version: The worldly parents and relatives also have their faults.

King Rizhi said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One! Excellent, excellent! Please explain to me the faults of a husband, and why it is said that if a husband has faults, his parents and relatives also have faults?'

The Buddha said, 'Great King! Listen carefully, listen carefully! Think well! I will explain it to you.'

The World Honored One told King Rizhi, 'Great King! A husband's faults are of four kinds.'

The King asked, 'What are these four faults?'

The World Honored One replied, 'Great King! If a husband is addicted to lust, intoxicated by lust, because of this intoxication, his mind is confused, and because of this confusion, he develops deep love for women. He does not wish to see or hear the Bhikshus (Bichu), Shramanas (Shamen), and Brahmins (Poluomen) who uphold precepts and have virtuous conduct. Because he does not wish to see or hear the Shramanas and Brahmins who uphold precepts and have virtuous conduct, he does not associate with them, does not take refuge in them, and does not make offerings to them. He also stays away from Shramanas and Brahmins who have no precepts and no virtuous conduct. Furthermore, he has no roots of faith, does not cultivate virtue, does not practice giving, has no wisdom at all, is shallow in knowledge and virtue, is arrogant and conceited, and engages in the practices of ghosts and spirits. He also associates with the unwise, is greedy for evil dharmas, delights in filth, stays away from good friends, and even if he is born in the heavens or among humans, he constantly criticizes his own life. He does not perform Homa (Humo) for the Shramanas and Brahmins, stays away from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and abandons the fruit of Nirvana (Nirvana). He constantly thinks of women's singing and dancing, drinking, and laughing. He is bound by these things and dies, falling into the Saṃghāta Hell (Zhonghe Diyu), the Kālasūtra Hell (Heisheng Diyu), the Saṃjīva Hell (Denghuo Diyu), the Raurava Hell (Haojiao Diyu), the Mahāraurava Hell (Dahaojiao Diyu), the Tapana Hell (Yanre Diyu), the Pratāpana Hell (Jiyanre Diyu), and the Avīci Hell (Abi Diyu), suffering all kinds of pain. After being born from hell, he enters the realm of Yama (Yanmoluo Jie); in the animal realm, he becomes lions, tigers, wolves, and various evil birds and beasts; even becoming a Nielucha (Nielucha) body, nailed to an iron fork tree. Great King! If a husband practices foolish dharmas in this way, he will receive such evil retribution. This is the first fault of a husband.'

At that time, the World Honored One spoke a verse:

'Lust is the root of filth.'


不凈,  過後常增業苦深,  聰慧法師呵欲染,  當生父母亦無益。  譬如廣大不凈坑,  滿盛糞壤多臭穢,  亦似冢間膀脹尸,  淫慾之人亦如是。  復似蠅蟲𠯗瘡腫,  驢馬奔眠糞穢中,  豬狗食啖臭魚等,  耽愛女人亦如是。  破壞善名兼德行,  恒行毀禁具無慚,  不生天道墮阿鼻,  是故法師呵愛慾。  如人誤飲惡毒藥,  迷亂猖狂遍體疼,  不覺無常毒所中,  耽欲之人亦如是。  樂著美味便珍饌,  愛聽歌音戀色聲,  家事不思多忘失,  唯作輪迴集苦因。  貪著淫慾常稱讚,  不了愚迷糞袋身,  晝夜恒行下劣行,  薄福沈輪于惡趣。  讚美淫慾行非行,  多饒瞋恚長愚癡,  如履顛巍大險崖,  不覺須臾致失命。  既別人世閻浮界,  死墮無邊業海中,  五峰圍繞鐵山間,  日月燈光全不見。  如風狂亂無知解,  往返縱橫失路岐,  如是經生常住此,  一切世間無所重,  種種善業亦不生。  設有女男無孝敬,  棄背尊親行五逆,  和合妻女倍慇勤,  張羅罪網無思慮,  墮落貪癡欲樂中。  父母遠離無返復,  罔思育養報艱辛,  放逸耽淫著戲弄,  互相煩惱倍增多。  破壞修行疑

It's like a huge impure pit, filled with feces and filth, emitting a foul odor, Also like a swollen and decaying corpse in a tomb, those who indulge in lust are the same. It's also like flies swarming around festering sores, donkeys and horses running and sleeping in dung, Pigs and dogs eating rotten fish, etc., those who indulge in lust are also like this. Lust destroys good reputation and virtue, causing people to constantly engage in shameless acts that violate precepts, Unable to ascend to the heavens, they will instead fall into Avici (the lowest level of hell in Buddhism), therefore Dharma masters must rebuke lust. It's like a person mistakenly drinking poison, becoming confused and frantic, with pain all over the body, Not realizing the arrival of impermanence, harmed by the poison, those who indulge in desire are the same. Greedy for delicious food, fond of listening to songs and watching plays, Not considering family matters, often forgetting, only accumulating the roots of suffering for reincarnation. Greedy for lust, often praising it, not understanding this foolish bag of feces body, Day and night engaging in inferior behavior, with shallow blessings, sinking into evil paths. Praising lust, doing what should not be done, will increase anger and ignorance, Like walking on the edge of a crumbling cliff, not realizing that one will lose their life in an instant. Once leaving the world and entering Jambudvipa (the world we live in), after death, one will fall into the boundless sea of karma, Surrounded by five iron mountains, the light of the sun and moon cannot be seen. Like a mad wind, confused and ignorant, going back and forth, losing one's way, Living here life after life, all worldly things are unimportant, Various good deeds cannot arise. Even if there are children, they will not be filial to their parents, Abandoning respected relatives, committing the five rebellious acts (five extremely evil acts), but being exceptionally diligent towards their wives and children, Setting up a net of sins, without thinking, falling into the pleasures of greed, delusion, and desire. Far from parents, unable to repay their nurturing grace, Indulging in lust and play, causing each other trouble, and increasing suffering. Destroying practice, creating doubts.


種種,  不逢賢聖作良因,  樂行邪行受極苦,  不顧刑罰恥辱侵。  斗諍欺抄致殺傷,  隳張財賄離善友,  不生天道兼人趣,  死入阿鼻地獄中。  鐵林青色攢鋒刃,  猛焰煻煨烈火城,  劍樹刀山遍地中,  洋銅熱鐵為漿饌,  如斯大苦因淫慾,  隱沒菩提智慧根。  汝向女人生恐怖,  勿令親近起攀緣,  人天善道若相應,  不久菩提自獲得。

「複次,大王!若父母生產兒子,其事甚難,世所共知。處胎之時,懷擔十月,苦惱疼痛種種多般,起坐艱辛,餐飲節度,縱獲生產,如宰豬羊。不顧自身,唯憂兒子,乳哺養育,豈離懷抱。大小便痢,須自洗濯。后漸長大,而以誠實之言種種誘訓,令彼修學閻浮提內,工巧伎藝,書疏算計,經商買賣種種事業。又復令彼身心安樂,廣與財帛,富貴授用,選揀親姻,娉娶妻妾,比望孝順父母供敬侍養,而復心意顛狂,一向迷亂,深著色慾都不省悟。又于別族姓傢俬娶妻妾,互相貪愛,于其父母返成不孝亦不敬重。其父后時耆年老邁,身體羸瘦眼耳聾暗,起坐艱難,要人扶持,而卻憎惡輕棄嫌厭,種種逼迫,趁父出舍,娶其外族妻子於家聚會種種歡樂。」

佛告大王:「若是丈夫行此邪行,棄背父母,決定命終入阿鼻地

佛告訴大王:『如果丈夫做出這種邪惡的行為,拋棄父母,必定命終墮入阿鼻地獄(Avici Hell)。』

【English Translation】 English version Various actions, if not taking the wise and virtuous as a model, and planting good causes, will lead to delighting in evil deeds, suffering extreme pain, and disregarding the invasion of punishments and shame. They fight and deceive, causing killings and injuries, squandering wealth, and distancing themselves from good friends. Such people can neither ascend to the heavens nor be reborn as humans; after death, they will fall into Avici Hell (the lowest level of hell in Buddhism). There, iron forests with blue sharp blades are densely packed, and fierce flames burn like a city of fire. Sword trees and knife mountains cover the ground, and molten copper and hot iron are their food. Such immense suffering is due to lust, which obscures the roots of Bodhi (enlightenment) and wisdom. You should develop fear towards women, not approach them, lest you give rise to clinging. If you can align with the good paths of humans and heavens, you will naturally attain Bodhi soon.

『Furthermore, Great King! The birth of a son by parents is an extremely difficult matter, as everyone in the world knows. During pregnancy, carrying the fetus for ten months, they experience various sufferings and pains, and it is difficult to sit and stand, and they must regulate their diet. Even if they give birth smoothly, it is like slaughtering pigs and sheep. They disregard themselves, only worrying about their son, nursing and raising him, never leaving his side. They must personally clean the child's feces and urine. Later, as the child grows, the parents use honest words and various teachings to guide him, letting him learn various skills in Jambudvipa (the world we live in), such as craftsmanship, writing, accounting, and various business endeavors. They also ensure their son's physical and mental well-being, giving him abundant wealth, allowing him to enjoy riches, choosing suitable in-laws, and taking wives and concubines, hoping that he will be filial to his parents, providing for and serving them. However, their minds become inverted and crazy, indulging in ** without any awakening. They also take wives and concubines from other families, mutually indulging in lust and affection, and instead become unfilial and disrespectful to their own parents. When their father becomes old and frail, with a weak body, deaf ears, and blurred vision, finding it difficult to sit and stand, needing support, they despise, belittle, and dislike him, forcing him out of the house, and gathering with their foreign wives at home, seeking pleasure.』

The Buddha told the Great King: 『If a husband commits such evil deeds, abandoning his parents, he will certainly fall into Avici Hell after death.』


獄,求出無期;為第二過。若善男子!棄背女色,心意清潔,供養父母,行孝敬行。命終之後不墮惡趣,而生諸天,受福快樂,天上福盡下生人間,亦不受貧窮下賤,富貴吉祥。」

爾時世尊而說偈言:

「離欲行慈孝,  命終生天趣,  梵王、帝釋身,  恒受于快樂。  供養老父母,  後生人世中,  入海為商賈,  安樂獲珍寶。  供養老父母,  一切最上德,  田種果成熟,  較量福不盡。  供養老父母,  永不擔重擔,  常得驢馬負,  刀刃不能害。  供養老父母,  不度鹹水河,  猛火與刀兵,  亦復不能近。  供養老父母,  常得善妻男,  穀麥與資財,  琉璃及金寶。  供養老父母,  常得天宮住,  無數歡喜園,  四面恒圍繞。  供養老父母,  常聞佛法音,  具相色端嚴,  誰人不敬重。

「複次,大王!若彼丈夫行非法業,心不真實,恒多邪見,于善不知,妄生顛倒,多得愚癡之人常所稱讚,有智慧者恒生忿怒,罪業轉深永失大利,于其佛世永不值遇,我慢貢高貧窮下賤,眾不愛樂;此是丈夫第三過失。」

爾時世尊而說偈言:

「丈夫行淫慾,  顛倒分別我,  愚迷罪業深,  輪迴墮惡道。  

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 『被囚禁在監獄中,求出獄也沒有期限』,這是第二種過失。如果善男子!捨棄對女色的貪戀,內心清凈,供養父母,奉行孝道。命終之後不會墮入惡道,而是會生到諸天,享受福報和快樂。天上的福報享盡后,下生到人間,也不會遭受貧窮,而是會富貴吉祥。

這時,世尊說了偈語:

『遠離淫慾,奉行慈愛和孝道,命終之後會生到天界,成為梵王(Brahma,創造之神)、帝釋(Indra,天神之王)之身,恒常享受快樂。 供養年老的父母,後世轉生到人間,入海經商,平安快樂地獲得珍寶。 供養年老的父母,是一切最上等的德行,如同田地裡果實成熟,所獲福報無法估量。 供養年老的父母,永遠不會承擔重擔,常常有驢馬代勞,刀刃也不能傷害。 供養年老的父母,不會渡過充滿鹹水的河流,猛火和刀兵也不能靠近。 供養年老的父母,常常得到賢良的妻子和兒子,以及穀物、麥子和資財,還有琉璃和金銀珠寶。 供養年老的父母,常常居住在天宮,無數的歡喜園林,四面環繞。 供養年老的父母,常常聽到佛法的聲音,相貌端正莊嚴,誰人不敬重呢?』

『再者,大王!如果那丈夫行為不合法度,內心不真實,常常持有邪見,對善行一無所知,妄生顛倒之見,常常被愚癡之人稱讚,有智慧的人則常常感到憤怒,罪業越來越深,永遠失去大利益,在佛陀住世時也永遠不會遇到,我慢貢高,貧窮,不被大眾喜愛;這是丈夫的第三種過失。』

這時,世尊說了偈語:

『丈夫沉溺於淫慾,顛倒地分別自我,愚昧迷惑,罪業深重,在輪迴中墮入惡道。

【English Translation】 English version 'Being imprisoned in jail, with no hope of release,' this is the second fault. If a good man! abandons lust for women, his mind is pure, he supports his parents, and practices filial piety. After death, he will not fall into evil realms, but will be born in the heavens, enjoying blessings and happiness. When the blessings in heaven are exhausted, he will be reborn in the human world, and will not suffer poverty, but will be wealthy and auspicious.

At that time, the World Honored One spoke in verse:

'Those who abandon lust and practice compassion and filial piety, after death, will be born in the heavens, becoming Brahma (the creator god) or Indra (the king of the gods), constantly enjoying happiness. Supporting elderly parents, in the next life, one will be reborn in the human world, go to sea for business, and peacefully and happily obtain treasures. Supporting elderly parents is the highest virtue, like the ripening of fruits in the field, the blessings obtained are immeasurable. Supporting elderly parents, one will never bear heavy burdens, often having donkeys and horses to carry them, and blades cannot harm them. Supporting elderly parents, one will not cross rivers filled with salt water, and fierce fires and weapons cannot approach. Supporting elderly parents, one will often obtain virtuous wives and sons, as well as grains, wheat, and wealth, and also lapis lazuli and gold and silver treasures. Supporting elderly parents, one will often dwell in heavenly palaces, with countless pleasure gardens, surrounded on all sides. Supporting elderly parents, one will often hear the sound of the Buddha's teachings, with a dignified and handsome appearance, who would not respect them?'

'Furthermore, great king! If that man acts unlawfully, his heart is not sincere, he often holds wrong views, knows nothing of good deeds, gives rise to deluded views, is often praised by foolish people, while wise people often feel anger, his sins become deeper and deeper, he will forever lose great benefits, and will never encounter the Buddha during his lifetime, he is arrogant and conceited, poor, and not loved by the masses; this is the third fault of a man.'

At that time, the World Honored One spoke in verse:

'A man who indulges in lust, falsely distinguishes the self, is foolish and deluded, his sins are deep, and in the cycle of rebirth, he falls into evil realms.'


遠離佛功德,  無智慧揀擇,  虛妄求安樂,  如河覓盧迦。  愚癡愛慾人,  諂曲多虛誑,  望求非法樂,  返成地獄苦。  著欲見顛倒,  下劣自無知,  如夜黑暗中,  不分道非道。  無慚愧信根,  唯耽聲色味,  菩薩與聲聞,  未曾行供養。  設遇正行者,  廣演微妙音,  輕法而不聽,  沉淪於地獄,  永不復人身。  斷除檀等行,  迷沒不修行,  菩提最上失。

「複次,大王!若諸男子自為活命,及著淫慾,癡愚障閉,作諸工巧種種事業,書疏算計讚詠談論,親近王臣,行非法行,謫罰有情,種種虛誑,廣求財利,作諸惡業。又復自為活命故,行不律儀行,貨易牛驢駝馬豬羊雞犬,乃至咒龍罝兔魁膾等事。或復經商,不擇道路,遊行險惡之道,臭穢之道,賊徒刀劍之道,乃至泛大溟海,寒熱飢渴,種種苦惱,而求財利。又于沙門、婆羅門,慳貪不肯佈施,一向著欲。又被女人降伏驅使,猶如奴僕長時同處,未曾舍離,起坐談話,互相攀顧,深生愛著。是故畜養女人,命終之後同入地獄;為第四過。」

爾時世尊而說偈言:

「追求著欲人,  迷醉何曾樂,  下劣妄追尋,  云何得安樂?  非真丈夫業,  自作不知非,

『再者,大王!如果有些男子爲了生存,以及貪戀淫慾,被愚癡矇蔽,從事各種工巧技藝,書寫計算,讚美談論,親近王臣,行非法之事,懲罰眾生,各種虛妄,廣泛地追求財利,造作各種惡業。又爲了生存,從事不合戒律的行為,買賣牛驢駝馬豬羊雞犬,甚至從事捕龍、設網捕兔、屠宰等事。或者經商,不選擇道路,走危險的道路,污穢的道路,盜賊刀劍出沒的道路,甚至泛舟于大海,忍受寒冷、炎熱、飢餓、乾渴等各種痛苦,而追求財利。又對沙門(出家修行者)、婆羅門(祭司),慳吝而不肯佈施,一味貪戀慾望。又被女人降伏驅使,如同奴僕一樣長期同處,不曾分離,起坐談話,互相顧盼,深深地產生愛戀。因此,畜養女人,命終之後一同墮入地獄;這是第四種過失。』

這時,世尊說了偈語:

『追求慾望的人,沉迷其中哪裡有快樂, 卑劣地妄自追尋,怎麼能得到安樂? 這不是大丈夫所為,自己做了錯事卻不知道,

【English Translation】 English version Far from the merits of the Buddha, lacking the wisdom to discern, Vainly seeking pleasure, like searching for a 'luka' (an aquatic animal) in a river. Foolish people who are attached to desires, are flattering and deceitful, Hoping for unlawful pleasures, they instead fall into the suffering of hell. Attached to desires, their views are inverted, they are inferior and ignorant, Like in the darkness of night, they cannot distinguish the right path from the wrong. Without shame or the roots of faith, they only indulge in sounds, sights, and tastes, Towards Bodhisattvas and Sravakas (disciples of the Buddha), they have never made offerings. Even if they encounter those who practice the right path, widely expounding the subtle Dharma, They despise the Dharma and do not listen, sinking into hell, Never again to obtain a human body. Cutting off acts of charity and other good deeds, Lost in delusion and not practicing, they ultimately lose the supreme Bodhi (enlightenment).

'Furthermore, great king! If some men, for the sake of survival and being attached to lust, are blinded by ignorance, engaging in various crafts and skills, writing and calculating, praising and discussing, being close to kings and ministers, engaging in unlawful acts, punishing sentient beings, various falsehoods, widely seeking wealth and profit, creating various evil deeds. Also, for the sake of survival, they engage in unprincipled actions, trading in cattle, donkeys, camels, horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, and dogs, even engaging in capturing dragons, setting nets for rabbits, butchering, and other such things. Or they engage in business, not choosing their paths, taking dangerous paths, foul paths, paths where thieves and swords are present, even sailing on the vast ocean, enduring cold, heat, hunger, thirst, and various sufferings, while seeking wealth and profit. Also, towards Sramanas (monastics) and Brahmins (priests), they are stingy and unwilling to give, solely attached to desires. Also, they are subdued and driven by women, like servants, living together for a long time, never separating, sitting, standing, talking, looking at each other, deeply generating attachment. Therefore, those who keep women, after death, will together fall into hell; this is the fourth fault.'

At that time, the World Honored One spoke in verse:

'Those who pursue desires, are intoxicated, where is there pleasure, Inferiorly and vainly seeking, how can they obtain happiness? This is not the work of a true man, doing wrong and not knowing it,

Foolishly clinging to lust, like dogs running to excrement, To sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma, attachment is the same. Those foolishly attached to desire, revolve in various cycles of rebirth, Like a monkey tied to a stake, never escaping the three realms (desire realm, form realm, formless realm). Those foolishly attached to desire, like crows craving rotten meat, Are often led by demons, falling into evil paths. Fools crave flavors, becoming entangled in beautiful things, How are they different from worms in a toilet? How would they know it is unclean? The wise attain liberation, not being defiled by female beauty, Seeing it, they are terrified, abandoning it like a decaying corpse. The foolish are scattered in mind, clinging to desire without letting go, Like walking a difficult hot road, thirsty and tired, yet drinking salty water. Those who drink like this, foolishly lose their lives, Those firmly attached to desire, their suffering is the same. In reality, this woman is like a body with sores and leprosy, Breeding worms that eat away at it, lust is the same. If a woman is adorned, it is like putting dung in a painted jar, Only looking at the exterior, who knows the inside is unclean? Like clothes washed with oil, hung on the body, Adorning a woman with decorations, the defilement is the same. Like clothes covering swords, like ashes covering fire, Adorning a woman with decorations, the harm is the same. Like the fire of the kalpa (end of the world) rising, the earth is burned into holes, Plants and trees cannot grow, rivers and oceans dry up. The places where bhutas (ghosts) dwell, Mount Sumeru (the center of the Buddhist universe) and the Iron Mountains (surrounding Mount Sumeru), The six desire heavens (six heavens of the desire realm) and the first dhyana heaven (first heaven of the form realm), are destroyed, who can save them? The human body quickly becomes impure, composed of various filthy things, including nails, hair, saliva, earwax, dirt, sweat, urine, feces, fat, brain marrow, skin, flesh, bone marrow, pus, blood, and connected veins, spleen, kidneys, heart, lungs, intestines, stomach, gallbladder, liver, raw organs and cooked organs, red phlegm and white phlegm. There are also eighty thousand households of tiny insects that gnaw within the body, they constantly reside in the body, yet the foolish are unaware. They develop craving for the body, like flies craving pus and blood, mistaking foul odors for fragrance, seeking pleasure in suffering. Those who indulge in desire, fight each other with sticks in competition, struggling like being burned by fire, intoxicated, who can awaken? The foolish cling to sensory pleasures, like a dog in an empty room, or like the sound of a 'di-la' (a musical instrument), ultimately becoming false illusions. It is also like monkeys, constantly climbing trees, even until impermanence arrives, they do not leave the trees. Likewise, those who crave desire, pursue the realm of lust, fall into evil realms, unable to escape the suffering of birth and death. The foolish, indulging in lust, after their lives end in that place, are thrown into an iron cauldron, residing there for a kalpa (Buddhist unit of time). Floating and sinking in the cauldron like boiled beans, the size of that cauldron, is sixty-four kotis (Buddhist numerical unit), where all beings depend. Each being that falls into it, their number cannot be calculated, boiled in the cauldron, suffering for a hundred kalpas. Or two, three, or four kalpas, depending on the weight of their karma, their skin and flesh rot away, leaving only white bones like white shells. Also, according to their own karma, they hold sharp hooks in their hands, and are thrown into burning iron troughs, dying and then coming back to life. They are also pounded by prison guards, wielding iron pestles, their bone marrow is all pounded into powder.

Again transformed into iron crows, iron dogs, and jackals, Their teeth and mouths sharp as swords, devouring the brains of sinners. If one commits sinful deeds, they will fall into a river of excrement, Or fall upon swords, everything is foul and filthy. If one commits sinful deeds, they will fall into extreme heat, Where they cry out, wail loudly, suffering the pains of the Black Rope Hell and the Burning Hell. If one commits sinful deeds, they will fall into a river of ashes, Sinking deeper and deeper, the pain unbearable. If one commits sinful deeds, after death they will fall into hell, Hungry, they swallow hot iron balls, thirsty, they drink molten copper. If one commits sinful deeds, they will fall between iron mountains, The mountains close together, crushing the body into powder. If one commits sinful deeds, they will constantly suffer torment, Receiving such retribution, no one can save them. If a moment of wisdom arises, hearing the Dharma in this way, Leaving behind all lust, one can attain liberation through renunciation.

The Buddha said to the king: 『If a husband engages in lustful acts, he will fall into hell and suffer such great pain. Therefore, O King! Constantly remember the Buddha and the Dharma, observe your mind and body, and do not let transgressions arise.』

King Rizi said: 『Yes, World Honored One!』 At the Tathagata's (如來) place, he developed deep faith.


,白言:「世尊!甚為希有,如來、應、正等覺,善說女人、丈夫之過。我當受持,歸佛、歸法、歸苾芻眾,今後棄捨淫慾刀杖等過,慜念饒益一切眾生。」

說此語時,會中日子王,及諸苾芻、菩薩摩訶薩、天、龍、藥叉、阿素啰、㜸路茶、健闥婆、莫呼落迦、人非人等,聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,作禮而去。

From now on, I will abandon the faults of lust, weapons, and so on, and compassionately benefit all sentient beings.' When these words were spoken, King Rizhi (name of a king) in the assembly, along with all the Bhikshus, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas (great Bodhisattvas), Devas, Nagas, Yakshas (guardian deities), Asuras (demi-gods), Garudas (mythical birds), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), Mahoragas (serpent deities), humans and non-humans, upon hearing what the Buddha had said, were all greatly delighted, paid their respects, and departed.
