佛說太子刷護經一卷

佛在羅閱祇耆阇崛山中時,與千二百比丘,菩薩萬二千人,優婆塞、優婆夷,諸天王梵釋,及無央數人民、鬼神、龍皆來俱會。阿阇世王太子,名為刷護,從國中與群臣長者子五百人,各持黃金華蓋,出羅閱國相隨出至佛所,持黃金華蓋上佛已,卻叉手持,頭面著地為佛作禮訖竟,皆叉手住。

阿阇世王太子刷護白佛言:「愿欲問事,如佛肯說者當問,不肯者不敢問。」

佛言:「在所問事。」

太子白佛言:「菩薩何因緣得顏頰端正?何因緣不入女人腹中,于蓮華中化生?何因緣能自知前世宿命之事?愿佛大恩當爲我曹說之。」

佛告太子:「能忍辱不怒者,後生即為人姝好;不淫泆,不與女人交通,若壽欲終時,人生一歲一月及七日者,後世生,便自知宿命無數世以來之事。」

太子白佛言:「菩薩何因緣,身有三十二相?何因緣有八十種好?何因緣人民有見佛身者視之無厭極?」

佛告太子:「本為菩薩時,好喜佈施種種雜物,與諸佛菩薩及師父母人民,在所來索,用是故得

【English Translation】 English version At one time, the Buddha was dwelling on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rājagṛha (Royal Palace City), together with twelve hundred bhikṣus (Buddhist monks), twelve thousand bodhisattvas (enlightenment-seeking beings), as well as upāsakas (male lay devotees), upāsikās (female lay devotees), various Deva Kings, Brahma and Śakra, and countless people, ghosts, and dragons, all gathered together. Prince Śūra (Brave) of King Ajātaśatru (Unborn Enemy), along with five hundred ministers and sons of elders, each holding a golden canopy, came from the kingdom of Rājagṛha to where the Buddha was. After offering the golden canopies to the Buddha, they stepped back, holding their hands in reverence, and bowed their heads to the ground in prostration to the Buddha, then stood with their hands clasped. Prince Śūra of King Ajātaśatru said to the Buddha, 'I wish to ask some questions. If the Buddha is willing to explain, then I will ask; if not, I dare not ask.' The Buddha said, 'Ask whatever you wish to ask.' The prince said to the Buddha, 'For what reason does a bodhisattva obtain a beautiful and well-formed face? For what reason are they not born from a woman's womb but are born through transformation in a lotus flower? For what reason are they able to know their past lives? May the Buddha, with great compassion, explain these things to us.' The Buddha told the prince, 'Those who can endure insults and not become angry will be born with a beautiful appearance in their next life. Those who do not engage in sexual misconduct and do not have intercourse with women, if their lifespan is about to end, and they have lived for one year, one month, and seven days, in their next life, they will be able to know their past lives from countless lifetimes.' The prince said to the Buddha, 'For what reason does a bodhisattva have the thirty-two marks (lakṣaṇa, special physical characteristics of the Buddha)? For what reason do they have the eighty minor marks (anuvyañjana, subtle characteristics of the Buddha)? For what reason do people who see the Buddha's body never tire of looking at it?' The Buddha told the prince, 'When they were bodhisattvas in the past, they liked to give various kinds of things as alms to all Buddhas, bodhisattvas, teachers, parents, and people, to all who came to ask for them, and because of this, they obtained these qualities.'


三十二相。菩薩當有慈心,哀念十方人民及蜎飛蠕動之類,如視赤子皆欲令度脫,用是故得八十種好。菩薩見怨家、父母,心適等無有異,用是故人民見佛視之無厭極。」

太子復白佛言:「菩薩何所因緣,知深經智慧及陀羅尼行?何因緣知三昧定意得安隱?何因緣佛所說皆快善?其有聞者皆歡喜信受?」

佛告太子:「菩薩喜書信受諷誦學,用是故知深經智慧,得陀羅尼行;菩薩常喜專心正意,用是故得三昧安隱;菩薩所說皆至誠不欺,用是故所語人民皆信向,聞者莫不歡喜者。」

太子復白佛言:「菩薩何因緣學經聞佛語人民皆信?何因緣知經律儀法?何因緣孝順隨佛教不犯?」

佛告太子:「菩薩世世不諛諂,用是故學經聞佛語悉知不忘;菩薩入深經不恐不怖,用是故得經律便知儀法;菩薩世世敬佛敬經敬師敬父母,用是故得智慧。」

太子復白佛言:「菩薩何因緣世世生佛邊?何因緣問佛嘆經曉知中慧?」

佛告太子:「菩薩世世見人說經,不中壞亂,不呵之,用是故得生佛邊;菩薩數嘆深經,用是故知中慧。」

太子復白佛言:「何因緣不生惡處?何因緣生天上?何因緣不貪愛慾?」

佛告太子:「菩薩世世信佛信經信比丘僧,用是故不生八惡處;菩薩

【English Translation】 English version: The thirty-two marks (of a Buddha). A Bodhisattva should have a compassionate heart, pitying the people of the ten directions and all creatures that fly and crawl, regarding them as their own children, wishing them all to be liberated. Because of this, they obtain the eighty minor marks (of a Buddha). A Bodhisattva views enemies and parents with equal equanimity, without any difference. Because of this, people who see the Buddha are filled with joy and never tire of looking at him. The Prince then asked the Buddha, 'What are the causes and conditions that enable a Bodhisattva to understand the profound wisdom of the scriptures and the practice of Dharani (mantras)? What causes and conditions enable them to understand the power of Samadhi (meditative concentration) and attain peace? What causes and conditions make everything the Buddha says so quick and good? Why do those who hear the Dharma all rejoice and believe?' The Buddha told the Prince, 'A Bodhisattva delights in writing, accepting, reciting, and studying the Dharma. Because of this, they understand the profound wisdom of the scriptures and attain the practice of Dharani. A Bodhisattva always delights in focusing their mind with right intention. Because of this, they attain the peace of Samadhi. Everything a Bodhisattva says is sincere and truthful. Because of this, what they say is believed and followed by the people, and those who hear it cannot help but rejoice.' The Prince then asked the Buddha, 'What causes and conditions enable a Bodhisattva to study the scriptures, hear the Buddha's teachings, and be believed by the people? What causes and conditions enable them to understand the rules and regulations of the scriptures? What causes and conditions enable them to be filial, follow the Buddha's teachings, and not violate them?' The Buddha told the Prince, 'A Bodhisattva is never flattering or deceitful in any lifetime. Because of this, when they study the scriptures and hear the Buddha's teachings, they understand and do not forget them. A Bodhisattva enters deeply into the scriptures without fear or trepidation. Because of this, they understand the rules and regulations of the scriptures. A Bodhisattva respects the Buddha, the scriptures, their teachers, and their parents in every lifetime. Because of this, they attain wisdom.' The Prince then asked the Buddha, 'What causes and conditions enable a Bodhisattva to be born near the Buddha in every lifetime? What causes and conditions enable them to ask the Buddha questions, praise the scriptures, and understand the wisdom within them?' The Buddha told the Prince, 'A Bodhisattva, in every lifetime, when they see someone expounding the scriptures, does not disrupt or confuse them, nor do they criticize them. Because of this, they are born near the Buddha. A Bodhisattva often praises the profound scriptures. Because of this, they understand the wisdom within them.' The Prince then asked the Buddha, 'What causes and conditions prevent one from being born in evil realms? What causes and conditions enable one to be born in the heavens? What causes and conditions prevent one from being greedy for desires?' The Buddha told the Prince, 'A Bodhisattva believes in the Buddha, the scriptures, and the Sangha (monastic community) in every lifetime. Because of this, they are not born in the eight evil realms. A Bodhisattva


持戒不缺,用是故生天上;菩薩知經法本空,用是故不貪愛慾。」

太子復白佛言:「菩薩何因緣身所行、口所言、心所念皆凈潔?何因緣魔不能得其便?何因緣不敢誹謗佛?不敢誹謗經?不敢誹謗比丘僧?」

佛告太子:「菩薩侍佛喜學經愛比丘僧,用是故得凈潔;菩薩晝夜行道精進不懈,用是故魔不能得其便;菩薩所語皆至誠,用是故眾人不敢誹謗佛,不敢誹謗經道,不敢誹謗比丘僧。」

太子復白佛言:「菩薩何因緣,好高聲如梵天聲?何因緣有八種音?何因緣知眾人所念皆悉能報?」

佛告太子:「菩薩世世至誠不欺,用是故好高聲如梵天聲;菩薩世世不惡口,用是故得八種音;菩薩世世不兩舌、不妄語,用是故眾人所念悉能報故。」

太子復白佛言:「何因緣得壽命長?何因緣身得無疾病?何因緣家室和順相愛,不令他人別離?」

佛告太子:「不殺生者,用是故後生為人師壽命長;不持刀杖擊人,用是故後生為人得無疾病;見人有變斗喜行和解令歡喜,用是故後生為人他人不能得別離。」

太子復白佛言:「菩薩何因緣,多得財物珍寶有不離?何因緣不亡財物?不為人所劫盜?何因緣得尊者得高?」

佛告太子:「不貪他人財物者,用是故後生為人得

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本:持守戒律沒有缺失,因此能夠升到天上;菩薩明白佛經的法理本質是空性的,因此不會貪戀慾望。

太子再次向佛陀請教:『菩薩是因何種緣故,使得身所行、口所言、心所念都清凈無染?是因何種緣故,使得魔不能找到機會?是因何種緣故,使得他們不敢誹謗佛?不敢誹謗佛經?不敢誹謗比丘僧?』

佛陀告訴太子:『菩薩侍奉佛陀,喜歡學習佛經,愛護比丘僧,因此能夠得到清凈;菩薩日夜精進行道,不懈怠,因此魔不能找到機會;菩薩所說的話都真實誠懇,因此眾人不敢誹謗佛,不敢誹謗佛經,不敢誹謗比丘僧。』

太子再次向佛陀請教:『菩薩是因何種緣故,聲音洪亮如梵天之聲?是因何種緣故,具有八種美妙的音聲?是因何種緣故,能夠知曉眾人心中所想並給予迴應?』

佛陀告訴太子:『菩薩生生世世都至誠不欺,因此聲音洪亮如梵天之聲;菩薩生生世世不惡語傷人,因此得到八種美妙的音聲;菩薩生生世世不挑撥離間,不說謊,因此能夠知曉眾人心中所想並給予迴應。』

太子再次向佛陀請教:『是因何種緣故能夠長壽?是因何種緣故身體沒有疾病?是因何種緣故家庭和睦相愛,不被他人離間?』

佛陀告訴太子:『不殺生的人,因此後世為人能夠長壽;不持刀杖傷害他人的人,因此後世為人能夠沒有疾病;看到他人爭鬥時,喜歡從中調解,使他們和好,因此後世為人家庭和睦,不被他人離間。』

太子再次向佛陀請教:『菩薩是因何種緣故,能夠得到許多財物珍寶而不散失?是因何種緣故,不會丟失財物,不被他人搶劫偷盜?是因何種緣故,能夠得到尊貴和崇高的地位?』

佛陀告訴太子:『不貪圖他人財物的人,因此後世為人能夠得到許多財物珍寶而不散失;不偷盜他人財物的人,因此後世為人不會丟失財物,不被他人搶劫偷盜;恭敬尊重他人的人,因此後世為人能夠得到尊貴和崇高的地位。』

【English Translation】 English version: 'By upholding the precepts without deficiency, one is thus born in the heavens; Bodhisattvas understand that the essence of the Dharma is emptiness, and therefore do not crave desires.'

The prince further asked the Buddha, 'For what reason are the Bodhisattva's actions, words, and thoughts all pure? For what reason is it that Mara cannot find an opportunity? For what reason do they not dare to slander the Buddha? Do not dare to slander the scriptures? Do not dare to slander the Sangha (monastic community)?'

The Buddha told the prince, 'Bodhisattvas serve the Buddha, delight in studying the scriptures, and love the Sangha, and therefore they attain purity; Bodhisattvas practice the path diligently day and night without懈怠(xie dai: lax), and therefore Mara cannot find an opportunity; Bodhisattvas speak truthfully, and therefore people do not dare to slander the Buddha, do not dare to slander the scriptures, and do not dare to slander the Sangha.'

The prince further asked the Buddha, 'For what reason does the Bodhisattva have a voice as loud as Brahma's? For what reason do they have eight kinds of sounds? For what reason do they know what others are thinking and are able to respond?'

The Buddha told the prince, 'Bodhisattvas are sincere and do not deceive in every lifetime, and therefore their voice is as loud as Brahma's; Bodhisattvas do not speak harshly in every lifetime, and therefore they attain eight kinds of sounds; Bodhisattvas do not engage in divisive speech or lie in every lifetime, and therefore they are able to know what others are thinking and respond.'

The prince further asked the Buddha, 'For what reason does one attain a long life? For what reason does one's body have no illness? For what reason is one's family harmonious and loving, and not separated by others?'

The Buddha told the prince, 'Those who do not kill living beings, therefore in their next life they will have a long life; those who do not use knives or weapons to harm others, therefore in their next life they will have no illness; those who see others fighting and like to mediate and make them happy, therefore in their next life their family will be harmonious and not separated by others.'

The prince further asked the Buddha, 'For what reason do Bodhisattvas obtain much wealth and treasures that do not disappear? For what reason do they not lose their wealth, and are not robbed or stolen from? For what reason do they attain honor and high status?'

The Buddha told the prince, 'Those who do not covet the wealth of others, therefore in their next life they will obtain much wealth and treasures that do not disappear; those who do not steal the wealth of others, therefore in their next life they will not lose their wealth, and will not be robbed or stolen from; those who respect and honor others, therefore in their next life they will attain honor and high status.'


富樂,喜佈施不慳貪,用是故不亡財物,物益增多;見人富樂得錢財,心不嫉妒,不自貢高,用是故後生得高尊。」

太子復白佛言:「何因緣能得天眼洞視?何因緣得天耳徹聽?何因緣能知世間人民死生之事?」

佛告太子:「用好喜然燈于佛前,以是故後生為人得天眼洞視;好喜持倡伎樂於佛寺前,用是故後生為人得天耳徹聽;菩薩喜定意入三昧得禪,用是故知世間死生之變。」

太子復白佛言:「菩薩何因緣得飛行四神足?菩薩何因緣念知前世無數劫以來之事?菩薩何因緣得三活佛便般泥洹?」

佛告太子:「菩薩好喜佈施,常持車馬驢騾象駱駝履屣及水船,與諸佛比丘僧及與人民,用是故得飛行四神足。菩薩常專心念諸佛,三昧從學喜行教人,用是故得念前世無數劫以來之事。菩薩得阿維越致道,以念無所復著,用是故能斷死生之根,得佛道便般泥洹。」

太子復白佛言:「菩薩何因緣預治國?何因緣預會比丘僧?何因緣光明照十方?」

佛告太子:「菩薩本求大愿,用是故預得佛國;菩薩好喜佈施乞丐與人,喜教人民為六波羅蜜,是故后得比丘僧;菩薩喜持七寶作華蓋用上佛,用是故得光明遍照十方。」

佛為太子分別說是事,太子歡喜,及五百長者子皆大歡

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本:佛陀說:『富樂之人,因為喜歡佈施而不吝嗇貪婪,所以不會損失財物,反而財富會越來越多;看到別人富有快樂,得到錢財,心中不會嫉妒,也不會驕傲自大,因此來世會得到高貴的地位。』 太子又問佛陀:『是什麼因緣能夠得到天眼,洞察一切?是什麼因緣能夠得到天耳,聽見一切?是什麼因緣能夠知道世間人民的生死之事?』 佛陀告訴太子:『因為喜歡在佛前點燈,所以來世為人能夠得到天眼,洞察一切;因為喜歡在佛寺前演奏音樂,所以來世為人能夠得到天耳,聽見一切;菩薩喜歡專注入定,進入三昧(samadhi,禪定),得到禪定,所以能夠知道世間的生死變化。』 太子又問佛陀:『菩薩是什麼因緣能夠得到飛行四神足(神通)?菩薩是什麼因緣能夠憶念知道前世無數劫以來的事情?菩薩是什麼因緣能夠成為三活佛(過去、現在、未來佛)之後就入般泥洹(涅槃)?』 佛陀告訴太子:『菩薩喜歡佈施,經常把車馬、驢騾、大象、駱駝、鞋子、船隻等佈施給諸佛、比丘僧和人民,所以能夠得到飛行四神足。菩薩經常專心憶念諸佛,從三昧(samadhi,禪定)中學習,喜歡教導他人,所以能夠憶念前世無數劫以來的事情。菩薩得到阿維越致(不退轉)的道,因為心中不再執著任何事物,所以能夠斷除生死的根本,成就佛道后就入般泥洹(涅槃)。』 太子又問佛陀:『菩薩是什麼因緣能夠預先治理佛國?是什麼因緣能夠預先聚集比丘僧?是什麼因緣能夠光明照耀十方?』 佛陀告訴太子:『菩薩因為發下大愿,所以能夠預先得到佛國;菩薩喜歡佈施乞丐,教導人民修行六波羅蜜(paramita,到達彼岸的六種方法),所以後來能夠得到比丘僧;菩薩喜歡用七寶製作華蓋供奉佛陀,所以能夠得到光明遍照十方。』 佛陀為太子詳細解釋這些事情,太子和五百位長者子都非常歡喜。

【English Translation】 English version: The Buddha said, 'Those who are wealthy and happy, because they like to give and are not stingy or greedy, will not lose their wealth; instead, their wealth will increase. When they see others wealthy and happy, and gaining money, they will not be jealous, nor will they be arrogant. Therefore, they will attain a noble status in their next life.' The prince then asked the Buddha, 'What are the causes and conditions for obtaining the heavenly eye that sees all? What are the causes and conditions for obtaining the heavenly ear that hears all? What are the causes and conditions for knowing the matters of life and death of the people in the world?' The Buddha told the prince, 'Because one likes to light lamps before the Buddha, in the next life, one will obtain the heavenly eye that sees all. Because one likes to play music in front of the Buddhist temple, in the next life, one will obtain the heavenly ear that hears all. Bodhisattvas like to concentrate and enter samadhi (禪定), attaining dhyana (禪定), and therefore, they can know the changes of life and death in the world.' The prince then asked the Buddha, 'What are the causes and conditions for a Bodhisattva to obtain the four divine feet of flight (神通)? What are the causes and conditions for a Bodhisattva to remember and know the events of countless kalpas (劫) past? What are the causes and conditions for a Bodhisattva to become one of the three living Buddhas (past, present, and future Buddhas) and then enter parinirvana (涅槃)?' The Buddha told the prince, 'Bodhisattvas like to give, often giving away carts, horses, donkeys, mules, elephants, camels, shoes, and boats to all Buddhas, Bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧), and people. Therefore, they can obtain the four divine feet of flight. Bodhisattvas often concentrate on remembering all Buddhas, learning from samadhi (禪定), and like to teach others. Therefore, they can remember the events of countless kalpas past. Bodhisattvas attain the path of Avaivartika (不退轉), because their minds are no longer attached to anything, they can cut off the root of life and death, and after achieving Buddhahood, they enter parinirvana (涅槃).' The prince then asked the Buddha, 'What are the causes and conditions for a Bodhisattva to govern a Buddha-land in advance? What are the causes and conditions for a Bodhisattva to gather the Bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧) in advance? What are the causes and conditions for a Bodhisattva to have light shining in all ten directions?' The Buddha told the prince, 'Because Bodhisattvas make great vows, they can obtain a Buddha-land in advance. Bodhisattvas like to give to beggars and teach people to practice the six paramitas (波羅蜜, the six perfections), so they can later obtain the Bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧). Bodhisattvas like to use seven treasures to make canopies to offer to the Buddha, so they can have light shining in all ten directions.' The Buddha explained these matters in detail to the prince, and the prince and five hundred sons of elders were all very happy.


喜。太子刷護復白佛言:「愿使我後世生者,佛所說,令我悉受得,悉奉行之,皆令如願。」

佛便大笑,口中五色光出。佛告彌勒菩薩言:「聽我說之,太子刷護菩薩及長者子,前世皆供養百八億佛、皆行菩薩道,乃前世提和迦羅佛時,是五百人皆是佛弟子,是我所教,後世悉當共會,六億佛卻後一劫,摩訶波羅會一劫中,五百人前後作佛,皆同一名若那伎頭陀耶。後作佛時,當如阿彌陀佛其國,亦當如阿彌陀時等無異,國中菩薩往來者飛行者,皆如阿彌陀佛國。若有人民聞是經信喜者,皆當生阿彌陀國。」

佛說是已,太子刷護及五百長者子,諸比丘僧、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,諸天、人民、鬼神、龍,皆大歡喜,前為佛作禮而去。

【English Translation】 English version Joy. Prince Śuddhodana (father of Śākyamuni Buddha) again said to the Buddha, 'May I, in my future lives, be able to receive all that the Buddha has spoken, be able to practice it, and may all my wishes be fulfilled.' The Buddha then laughed, and five-colored lights emanated from his mouth. The Buddha told Bodhisattva Maitreya (the future Buddha), 'Listen to me, Prince Śuddhodana Bodhisattva and these sons of elders, in their past lives, they all made offerings to one hundred and eight billion Buddhas, and they all practiced the Bodhisattva path. In the time of the past Buddha Tīrthaṃkara, these five hundred people were all disciples of the Buddha, all taught by me. They will all meet again in future lives. After six hundred million Buddhas, in the kalpa of Mahāprajāpatī, these five hundred people will become Buddhas one after another, all with the same name, Jñānāketudhvaja (Banner of Wisdom). When they become Buddhas, their lands will be like the land of Amitābha (Buddha of the Western Pure Land), and like the time of Amitābha, there will be no difference. The Bodhisattvas in their lands, coming and going, flying, will all be like those in the land of Amitābha. If there are people who hear this sutra and believe and rejoice, they will all be reborn in the land of Amitābha.' After the Buddha spoke these words, Prince Śuddhodana and the five hundred sons of elders, as well as all the bhikṣus (monks), bhikṣuṇīs (nuns), upāsakas (male lay followers), upāsikās (female lay followers), gods, people, ghosts, and dragons, were all very joyful.
