【English Translation】 English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, the Garden of Anathapindika in Sravasti, together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty monks, all of whom were great Arhats (saints who have extinguished all defilements and are not subject to rebirth), well-known to all. There were also present the elders Sariputra (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his wisdom), Maha Maudgalyayana (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his supernatural powers), Maha Kasyapa (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his ascetic practices), Maha Katyayana (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his eloquence), Maha Kaushtila (a disciple of the Buddha, uncle of Sariputra), Revata (a disciple of the Buddha, known for his meditation), Cuda Panthaka (a disciple of the Buddha, known for his initial dullness but later enlightenment), Nanda (the Buddha's half-brother), Ananda (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his excellent memory), Rahula (the Buddha's son), Gavampati (a disciple of the Buddha, known for his cow-like chewing habit), Pindola Bharadvaja (a disciple of the Buddha, known for his longevity), Kalodayin (a disciple of the Buddha, responsible for teaching), Maha Kappina (a disciple of the Buddha, known for his knowledge of astronomy), Vakkula (a disciple of the Buddha, known for his longevity and health), and Anuruddha (a disciple of the Buddha, known for his divine eye). These great disciples, along with Bodhisattva Mahasattvas (great Bodhisattvas) such as Manjusri Dharma Prince (the Bodhisattva of wisdom), Ajita Bodhisattva (another name for Maitreya Bodhisattva), Gandhahasti Bodhisattva, and Constant Exertion Bodhisattva, and countless heavenly beings including Sakra Devanam Indra (the king of the gods), were all present. At that time, the Buddha said to the elder Sariputra: 'From here, passing westward through a hundred thousand million Buddha lands, there is a world called Sukhavati (the Land of Bliss). In that land, there is a Buddha named Amitabha (Infinite Light, Infinite Life), who is now teaching the Dharma. Sariputra! Why is that land called Sukhavati? Because the beings in that country have no suffering, but only experience all kinds of happiness, therefore it is called Sukhavati. Furthermore, Sariputra! In the land of Sukhavati, there are seven layers of railings, seven layers of nets, and seven rows of trees, all adorned and surrounded by four kinds of precious jewels. Therefore, that country is called Sukhavati. 'Moreover, Sariputra! In the land of Sukhavati, there are seven jeweled ponds, filled with water possessing eight meritorious qualities, and the bottom of the ponds is entirely covered with golden sand. On the four sides of the ponds are stairways made of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and crystal. Above them are pavilions, also adorned with gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, carnelian, red pearls, and agate. In the ponds, the lotus flowers are as large as chariot wheels, the blue ones emitting a blue light, the yellow ones emitting a yellow light, the red ones emitting a red light, and the white ones emitting a white light. Sariputra! The land of Sukhavati is adorned with such meritorious splendors.'

【English Translation】 English version: Blue has blue light, yellow has yellow light, red has red light, white has white light, subtle and fragrant. Śāriputra! The Land of Ultimate Bliss is adorned with such merits and virtues. Furthermore, Śāriputra! In that Buddha-land, heavenly music is always played, the ground is made of gold, and mandārava flowers rain down six times during the day and night. The beings in that country, often in the early morning, each fill their robes with various wonderful flowers to offer to hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddhas in other directions; and at mealtime, they return to their own country, eat their meals, and then walk about. Śāriputra! The Land of Ultimate Bliss is adorned with such merits and virtues. Moreover, Śāriputra! In that country, there are always various kinds of wonderful and colorful birds—white swans, peacocks, parrots, śāri birds, kalaviṅka birds, and birds with a shared life. These birds, six times during the day and night, emit harmonious and pleasant sounds, which proclaim the Five Roots, the Five Powers, the Seven Factors of Enlightenment, and the Eightfold Noble Path, and other such teachings. When the beings in that land hear these sounds, they all think of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Śāriputra! Do not think, 『These birds are actually born from the retribution of sins.』 Why is that? In that Buddha-land, there are no three evil realms. Śāriputra! In that Buddha-land, there is not even the name of the three evil paths, how much less their actual existence? These birds are all transformations created by Amitābha Buddha to propagate the sound of the Dharma. Śāriputra! In that Buddha-land, when a gentle breeze blows, the jeweled rows of trees and jeweled nets emit subtle sounds, like hundreds of thousands of kinds of music being played simultaneously. Those who hear these sounds naturally give rise to thoughts of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Śāriputra! That Buddha-land is adorned with such merits and virtues. Śāriputra! What do you think? Why is that Buddha called Amitābha? Śāriputra! That Buddha』s light is immeasurable, shining upon the lands of the ten directions without obstruction, therefore he is called Amitābha. Furthermore, Śāriputra! That Buddha』s lifespan and that of his people is immeasurable and boundless asamkhya kalpas, therefore he is named Amitābha. Śāriputra! Since Amitābha Buddha attained Buddhahood, it has been ten kalpas until now. Furthermore, Śāriputra! That Buddha has immeasurable

【English Translation】 English version The immeasurable disciples who are Shravakas (those who hear the teachings), all are Arhats (those who have attained enlightenment and are free from rebirth), their number cannot be known by calculation; the Bodhisattvas (beings who seek enlightenment for the benefit of all), are also like this. Shariputra (one of Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his wisdom)! That Buddha-land is adorned with such merits and virtues. Furthermore, Shariputra! The beings who are born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss (Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land), all are Avaivartika (non-retrogressing Bodhisattvas). Among them, many are Ekajati-pratibaddha (Bodhisattvas who will become Buddhas in their next life), their number is very great, it cannot be known by calculation, but can only be described by immeasurable, boundless Asankhyeya kalpas (extremely long periods of time). Shariputra! Beings who hear this should make a vow to be born in that land. Why? Because they can gather together with such superior and virtuous people. Shariputra! One cannot be born in that land with only a small amount of good roots, merits, and conditions. Shariputra! If there are good men or good women who hear of Amitabha Buddha (the lord of the Western Pure Land), and hold onto his name, whether for one day, two days, three days, four days, five days, six days, or seven days, with a single-minded focus. When this person is about to die, Amitabha Buddha and all the holy assembly will appear before them. When this person dies, their mind will not be confused, and they will be reborn in Amitabha Buddha's Land of Ultimate Bliss. Shariputra! I see this benefit, therefore I speak these words. If there are beings who hear these words, they should make a vow to be born in that land. Shariputra! Just as I now praise the inconceivable merits and virtues of Amitabha Buddha; in the East, there are also Akshobhya Buddha (the Immovable Buddha), Sumeru-samjna Buddha, Maha-sumeru Buddha, Sumeru-prabha Buddha, and Myo-ghosha Buddha, and so on, as many Buddhas as the sands of the Ganges River, each in their own land, extending their broad and long tongues, covering the three thousand great thousand worlds (a world system in Buddhist cosmology), speaking truthfully: 'You beings, should believe in this sutra that praises inconceivable merits and virtues, which is protected and upheld by all Buddhas.' Shariputra! In the Southern world, there are Chandra-surya-pradipa Buddha, Yashah-prabha Buddha, Maha-skandha-pradipa Buddha, Sumeru-pradipa Buddha, and Ananta-virya Buddha, and so on, as many Buddhas as the sands of the Ganges River, each in their own land, extending their broad and long tongues, covering the three thousand great thousand worlds, speaking truthfully: 'You beings,

【English Translation】 English version 'Those who hear the names of all the Buddhas; these good men and good women, are all protected and remembered by all the Buddhas, and they will all attain non-retrogression on the path to Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unexcelled complete enlightenment). Therefore, Shariputra (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples)! You should all believe and accept my words and what all the Buddhas have said.' 'Shariputra! If there are people who have already made vows, are now making vows, or will make vows in the future, wishing to be born in the land of Amitabha Buddha (the principal Buddha of the Western Pure Land), these people will all attain non-retrogression on the path to Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, and in that land, whether they have already been born, are now being born, or will be born in the future. Therefore, Shariputra! If good men and good women have faith, they should make vows to be born in that land.' 'Shariputra! Just as I now praise the inconceivable merits of all the Buddhas, those Buddhas also praise my inconceivable merits, and say: 'Shakyamuni Buddha (the founder of Buddhism) is able to do very difficult and rare things, able to attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi in the five turbidities of the evil world of the Saha (the world we live in) land—the turbidity of the kalpa (era of chaos), the turbidity of views (wrong views), the turbidity of afflictions (intense afflictions), the turbidity of beings (ignorant beings), and the turbidity of life (short lifespan)—and to preach this Dharma (Buddhist teachings) that is difficult to believe in all the world.' Shariputra! You should know that in the five turbidities of the evil world, I have done this difficult thing, attained Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, and preached this difficult-to-believe Dharma to all the world, which is extremely difficult!' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, Shariputra and all the Bhikkhus (monks), all the Devas (gods), humans, Asuras (a type of demigod), and others in the world, hearing what the Buddha had said, joyfully believed and accepted it, bowed, and departed. The Amitabha Sutra Spoken by the Buddha The Immeasurable Life Buddha (another name for Amitabha Buddha) speaks the Rebirth in the Pure Land Mantra.

【English Translation】 English version: Nāgārjuna Bodhisattva, wishing to be reborn in Sukhāvatī (the Pure Land), received this mantra in a dream. Yasha Tripitaka recited this mantra. The monk Xiu of Tianping Temple received this mantra orally from Yasha Tripitaka. That person said: 'The original scriptures have not come from foreign lands. The method for receiving and upholding this mantra is to recite it twenty-one times each during the six periods of the day and night; wash and rinse in the morning and evening, chew on a willow twig, light incense, kneel before the image, and recite it twenty-one times with palms together. If you persist in this daily, you will eradicate the four grave offenses (killing one's father, killing one's mother, killing an Arhat, and causing disunity in the Sangha), the five heinous crimes (killing one's father, killing one's mother, killing an Arhat, shedding the blood of a Buddha, and causing disunity in the Sangha), the ten evil deeds (killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, greed, anger, and wrong views), and the sins of slandering the Vaipulya sutras. In the present, you will not be disturbed by any evil ghosts or spirits, and after death, you will naturally be reborn in the Amitābha Buddha's Pure Land, let alone the inconceivable merit of receiving, upholding, and reciting it day and night.'
