【English Translation】 English version The Dharani for Uprooting All Karmic Obstacles and Attaining Rebirth in the Pure Land (Extracted from the Smaller Sutra of Immeasurable Life) Re-translated under imperial decree by Tripiṭaka Master Guṇabhadra from India during the Liu Song Dynasty Namo Amitābhāya (Homage to Amitābha, the Immeasurable Light), Tathāgatāya (To the Thus Come One), Tadyathā (Thus it is said), Amṛtod bhave (May there be the arising of nectar), Amṛta siddhaṃ bhave (May there be the arising of accomplished nectar), Amṛta vikrānte (Nectar, victorious in action), Amṛta vikrānta (Nectar, the victorious one), Gāmini (The one who goes), Gagana (Space), Kīrtikare (The maker of fame), Svāhā (Hail). If there are good men or good women who can recite this mantra, Amitābha Buddha will always abide on their crown, protecting them day and night, not allowing enemies to take advantage of them. In this life, they will always be peaceful, and when they approach the end of their life, they will naturally be reborn in the Pure Land. The Record of the Inconceivable Spiritual Power of the Amitābha Sūtra (Appended to the Sui Record, author unknown): In the past, the Dharma Master Sengrui, Huichong, Sengxian, and Huitong of Chang'an, and later the Chan Master Shi, Chan Master Jing, and Dharma Master Luan of Xihe from the Later Zhou Dynasty, and several hundred others, were all reborn in the Western Pure Land. Chan Master Chuo of Xihe and others, having witnessed Dharma Master Luan's rebirth in the Pure Land, each led those with karmic connections to diligently cultivate the Pure Land path. Chan Master Chuo also compiled the 'Records of Western Verifications,' named 'The Collection of Peace and Joy,' which became widely circulated. Also, Dharma Master Yuan of the Jin Dynasty, who stayed in Mount Lu for thirty years without leaving, then ordered one hundred and twenty-three fellow practitioners, both monastic and lay, to make a vow to be reborn in the West, and carved this vow into the mountain. During the Tianjia era of the Chen Dynasty, Chan Master Zhen of Mount Lu, while in meditation, saw several hundred people together riding a seven-jeweled lotus boat to the West. Chan Master Zhen then requested to join them.


載。其船上人報云:「法師雖講得《涅槃經》,亦大不可思議緣,法師未誦得《阿彌陀經》及咒,所以不得同去。」法師遂廢講業,日夜專誦《彌陀經》及咒,計應滿二萬遍。未終四七日前,夜向四更,有神人從西方送一白銀臺來空中,明過於日,告云:「法師壽終,當乘此臺往生阿彌陀國,故來相示,令知定生。」終時白黑咸聞,空中如奏音樂,並聞異香,數月聞香氣不歇。其夜峰頂寺僧眾,咸見一谷內有數十炬火大如車輪。

尋驗古今,得生安樂世界者非一,多見化佛徒眾來迎靈瑞,如傳廣明,不可繁錄。因珍禪師於此經有驗,故略述此一條以悟來哲,助成往生之志。

拔一切業障根本得生凈土神咒者,乃宋元嘉末年,求那跋陀重奉制譯,合計五十九字,一十五句。龍樹菩薩愿生安養,夢感此咒。耶舍三藏誦此咒,天平寺銹法師從耶舍三藏口受此咒,其人云:「經本外國不來,若欲受持咒法,嚼楊枝、澡豆,漱口、然香,于佛像前胡跪合掌,日夜六時各誦三七遍,即滅四重、五逆、十惡、謗方等罪,悉得滅除。現世所求皆得,不為惡鬼神所惑亂。若數滿二十萬遍,即感得菩提牙生,若至三十萬遍即面見阿彌陀佛。」

【English Translation】 English version: The people on the boat reported, 『Although the Dharma Master has lectured on the Nirvana Sutra, there is also an inconceivable karmic connection. However, the Dharma Master has not recited the Amitabha Sutra and the mantra, so he cannot go with us.』 Thereupon, the Dharma Master ceased his lectures and devoted himself day and night to reciting the Amitabha Sutra and the mantra, calculating that he should complete twenty thousand recitations. Less than four seven-day periods (twenty-eight days) before the end, around the fourth watch of the night, a divine being came from the west, sending a silver platform in the air, its brightness surpassing the sun. He announced, 『The Dharma Master』s life is about to end, and he should ride this platform to be reborn in the Amitabha Buddha』s land. Therefore, I have come to show you, so you know that you are destined for rebirth.』 At the time of his death, both monks and laypeople heard music in the air and smelled a strange fragrance, which lingered for months. That night, the monks of Fengding Temple all saw dozens of torches, as large as cartwheels, in a valley. Upon examining the past and present, there is more than one person who has been reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhavati). Many have seen the transformation body of the Buddha and his disciples coming to greet them, as widely recorded in biographies, which cannot be listed one by one. Because Chan Master Zhen had a verification with this sutra, this one instance is briefly described to enlighten future generations and help them achieve their aspiration for rebirth. The Dharani for Uprooting All Karmic Obstacles and Being Reborn in the Pure Land (The Pure Land Rebirth Dharani) was re-translated by Gunabhadra under imperial decree at the end of the Yuanjia era of the Song Dynasty, totaling fifty-nine characters and fifteen lines. Bodhisattva Nagarjuna, wishing to be reborn in Sukhavati, received this mantra in a dream. Tripitaka Master Yasha recited this mantra, and Dharma Master Xiu of Tianping Temple received this mantra from Tripitaka Master Yasha. That person said, 『The original sutra did not come from foreign lands. If you wish to receive and uphold the mantra, you should chew willow twigs, use soap beans to wash, rinse your mouth, light incense, kneel with your right knee on the ground, and join your palms in front of the Buddha image. Recite it three times seven times each of the six periods of the day and night. Then you can eradicate the four grave offenses, the five rebellious acts, the ten evil deeds, and the sins of slandering the Vaipulya sutras. All of these can be eradicated. All that you seek in this life will be obtained, and you will not be confused or disturbed by evil ghosts and spirits. If you recite it two hundred thousand times, you will feel the sprouting of the Bodhi tooth. If you recite it three hundred thousand times, you will see Amitabha Buddha.』
