【English Translation】 English version Śrāmaṇerikā-vinaya (沙彌尼戒經, Śrāmaṇerikā-vinaya: Rules for female novices) Recorded in the Later Han Dynasty The first precept for a female novice: Do not kill living beings. Have compassion for all sentient beings, like parents caring for their children, and cherish even the smallest creatures as if they were infants. What does it mean to not kill? It means protecting one's body, speech, and mind. The body should not kill any living thing, including insects and all breathing creatures. Do not kill with your own hands, nor instruct others to kill. Do not eat what you see being killed, hear being killed, suspect being killed, or killed for your sake. The mouth should not say things like 'should kill,' 'should harm,' or 'take revenge.' Nor should you say 'good to be dead,' 'good to kill,' or discuss 'this animal is fat,' 'that animal is thin,' 'this meat is good,' 'that meat is not good.' The mind should not think 'it would be good to kill something,' or 'this livestock is fat,' 'that livestock is thin.' Cherish all beings as if they were your own bone marrow, like your father, mother, children, or yourself, treating them equally without discrimination, and always aspire to the Mahayana (大乘, Mahayana: Great Vehicle) with a single mind. This is the first precept that a female novice learns. The precept for a female novice: Do not steal. Do not take even a blade of grass, a strand of hair, or a grain of rice worth more than one coin. Do not take anything that the owner has not given with their own hand. Do not say you will take it, and do not think of taking it. The eyes should not crave beautiful sights, the ears should not crave beautiful sounds, the nose should not steal fragrances, the tongue should not steal flavors, the body should not crave fine clothing, and the mind should not steal desires. Keep the six senses pure and unattached, and always maintain skillful wisdom. This is called not stealing. This is the precept for a female novice. The precept for a female novice: Do not engage in sexual misconduct. What does it mean to not engage in sexual misconduct? It means having a pure mind, not engaging in sexual acts with the body, not speaking of sexual matters with the mouth, and not thinking of sexual matters with the mind. Hold your own beliefs clearly, like the wind in the empty sky, without attachment. Do not engage in sexual acts with the body, do not look with lustful eyes, do not listen with lustful ears, do not smell with lustful nose, do not speak lustful words with the mouth, and do not harbor lustful desires in the mind. Observe that the body is composed of the four great elements (四大, Four Great Elements: earth, water, fire, wind) and is fundamentally empty. Considering these earth, water, fire, and wind, there is no self, no person, no life, and no destiny. What is there to be lustful about, and what is there to be attached to? Aspire to emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. This is the precept for a female novice. The precept for a female novice: Do not engage in divisive or harsh speech. Speech should be...

【English Translation】 English version Be peaceful, do not see what should not be seen, do not hear what should not be heard. Do not spread evil deeds that are seen, do not proclaim evil deeds that are heard, directly avoid evil words, and constantly practice the four equalities. Do not speak meaningless words, and always speak in accordance with the Dharma. Do not discuss worldly affairs, do not talk about matters of kings, ministers, or thieves, and constantly praise the scriptures, the Dharma, and the correct precepts of the Bodhisattvas. Aspire to the Mahayana (Great Vehicle), do not pursue the Hinayana (Small Vehicle), and practice the four equalities. This is the Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) precept.
Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) precept: Do not drink alcohol. Do not be addicted to alcohol, do not taste alcohol. Alcohol has thirty-six faults, losing the Way, ruining the family, endangering the body, and losing life, all of which come from it. Speaking incoherently, taking east for west, and taking south for north; unable to recite scriptures, disrespecting the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha); belittling teachers and friends, being unfilial to parents; the mind is closed, the thoughts are blocked, and one is foolish in every life; unable to encounter the Great Way, the mind has no knowledge, therefore do not drink alcohol. Desiring to be free from the five skandhas (pañca-skandha), the five desires (pañca kāmaguṇāni), and the five hindrances (pañca nivaraṇāni), to obtain the five supernormal powers (pañcābhijñā), and to be liberated from the five paths of reincarnation. This is the Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) precept.
Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) precept: Do not use incense and flowers to adorn oneself, clothing and shoes must not be of five colors, do not adorn oneself with various treasures, do not wear brocade, embroidery, silk, or damask. Do not look askance, and should wear coarse clothing, blue, black, magnolia, and kasaya robes, and walk with your head lowered. Desiring to remove the six decays, take the precepts as fragrance. Seek to recite the profound Dharma as true treasure, use the thirty-two marks (dvātriṃśat mahāpuruṣa lakṣaṇāni) as adornments, hope to plant many good roots as clothing, and vow to obtain the six supernormal powers (ṣaṭ abhijñā) without hindrance, and use the six perfections (ṣaṭ pāramitā) to guide others. This is the Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) precept.
Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) precept: Do not sit on high beds of gold and silver. Do not think of embroidered silk quilts and precious cushions. Do not instruct others to seek good beds and seats, fans with five-colored paintings, and excellent dusters. Do not wear armlets or finger rings. Be upright, have faith, keep the precepts, have shame and remorse, be generous, be learned, have wisdom, and be single-minded and diligent. Constantly seek samadhi (meditative absorption) as a bed, with the mind unmoving; numerous wisdoms naturally arise as a seat, the seven factors of enlightenment (sapta bojjhaṅgāḥ) do not change the aspiration, and focus on the mind of the Way. This is the Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) precept.
Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) precept: Do not listen to singing, dancing, or music, and do not clap hands or beat rhythms.
【English Translation】 English version She does not acquire possessions for herself, nor does she teach others to do so. She constantly cultivates herself, follows the right Dharma, does not engage in evil deeds, wholeheartedly takes refuge in the Buddha, recites scriptures, and practices righteousness as the joy of the Dharma, not seeking worldly pleasures. When listening to scriptures, she deeply contemplates their profound meanings. She does not become ill herself and does not ride in carriages, on horses, or elephants. She should contemplate lightness and flight, attaining the eight inconceivable spiritual powers (eight kinds of inconceivable spiritual powers), using them as vehicles to cross over the eight difficulties (eight kinds of suffering). This is the Śrāmaṇerī precepts (female novice precepts).
Śrāmaṇerī precepts: She must not accumulate treasures. She must not take them with her own hands, nor instruct others to do so. She should always be diligent and focused, taking the Path as her treasure, the scriptures as supreme, the meaning as subtle, and understanding emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness as the foundation. Reaching the three liberations (three kinds of liberation), she does not seek greed and desire. Desiring to be free from the nine vexations (nine kinds of vexations), she dwells in the Path for a very long time, without end or limit, without boundaries, and without dwelling anywhere. This is the Śrāmaṇerī precepts.
Śrāmaṇerī precepts: Eating must be at the proper time. She should always eat at the proper time and not exceed the limit. After midday, she must not eat again, even if there is extremely delicious food, she will never eat it again. She also does not instruct others to violate this, nor does she even think about it in her mind. Even if the most supreme natural food comes, she must not eat it. If an elder or a king does not eat after midday, they would rather die than violate this. She constantly contemplates meditation, and even if she eats some food, it is only to sustain her life. She wants to enable all beings to understand deeply, attain their wishes, and obtain the ten powers (ten powers of the Buddha) as food. This is the Śrāmaṇerī precepts.
The Śrāmaṇerī has already received the ten precepts, explores the true path, and her mind is pure. If she can practice these ten things, the five hundred precepts will naturally be complete. For example, if a person's head, hands, feet, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, body, mind, abdomen, and back are not damaged, and all the faculties are complete, and the intestines, stomach, lungs, liver, five viscera, joints, tendons, and veins are all complete. For example, if the roots of a tree are secure and complete, not withered or decayed, the stems, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits will naturally flourish. The Śrāmaṇerī is like this; if she can possess the foundation of the ten precepts, then the five hundred precepts will all be fulfilled, and she can attain spiritual powers and be able to reach everything. For example, in good fields, the seeds are not rotten, the wind and rain are timely, the five grains are abundant, and the people are well governed. The Śrāmaṇerī is like this.
【English Translation】 English version: If one can respect the ten precepts of a Śrāmaṇerī (female novice), then observing the five hundred precepts is equivalent to observing all of them. It is like a king whose teachings are widespread and bring peace, and all the people live in peace and contentment. The Śrāmaṇerī is the same; if she can fully observe the ten precepts, then the five hundred precepts are naturally fully observed. If parents are kind and harmonious, then their children, relatives, servants, and maids will naturally follow their example.
Furthermore, the Śrāmaṇerī should always respect the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), and revere her teacher and preceptor more than she reveres her parents by a hundred thousand times. Parents can only protect one for a lifetime, while the teachings of the preceptor can liberate one from limitless suffering. One should always think of repaying their kindness and not commit rebellious acts. One should always detest this impure body, as if one were imprisoned or had fallen into a latrine. Do not be greedy for the female body, do not burn **. One should regard it as facing a great fire, as if one were in a den of thieves. In one's mind, one should regard all beings as one's father, mother, son, or oneself. One should always be ashamed of one's past actions, for it is because of those unfavorable actions that one has obtained this body. One should understand that the essence of the body is emptiness, like an illusion; there is neither male nor female, it arises according to one's actions. Originally, there are no five realms of existence, let alone male or female. Those who seek the Mahayana (Great Vehicle) should understand that everything is empty, like illusions, transformations, dreams, shadows, echoes, mirages, banana trees, and echoes in deep mountains; they arise from the combination of causes and conditions, and originally have nothing of their own. Believe that form is like a shadow, pain is like a banana tree, thoughts are like a mirage, birth and death are like bubbles, and consciousness is like an illusion; they are not 'I'. They are formed by the combination of causes and conditions; without causes and conditions, they cease to exist. One comes alone and goes alone, with nothing to accompany one.
Those who wish to cultivate the Way, skillful wisdom is their parents; the joy of the Dharma is their siblings; not departing from the profound meaning is their preceptor; loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, and abiding in the correct Dharma are their children; the six pāramitās (perfections of giving, morality, patience, effort, meditation, and wisdom) are their companions; the wisdom of supernatural powers is their vehicle; not violating the sutras and precepts, and contemplating the meaning of emptiness is their dwelling.
Furthermore, a Śrāmaṇerī should not travel alone. She should travel with companions of the same kind, two or three together. If there are no Śrāmaṇerīs, she should travel with a laywoman of pure faith. Female servants should not sit on the same bed or seat with senior Śrāmaṇeras or men. Do not lie. Also, do not reside in a monastery of monks. If one is not ill, one should not frequently go back and forth. Only when a donor invites one to recite scriptures may one speak. Do not act on one's own authority; those of the same rank should teach each other, and one should be respectful and obedient according to age, and not be arrogant or indulgent. They should guide and advise each other, and if there are faults

【English Translation】 English version: Admonish in private, do not speak in the presence of the crowd. Only when you hear of or see good deeds, may you proclaim them; when you hear of or see evil deeds, you must not spread them, but only report them to the Upadhyaya (preceptor), and not tell others. Constantly reflect on yourself, when you see good deeds, think of learning from them, when you see evil deeds, examine yourself, and feel sorrow for those who do not understand the reasons.
If a Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) seeks an Upadhyaya (preceptor), she should find one who is intelligent, wise, and devoted to the Dharma, so that she can liberate others in every lifetime. It is like having a complete and sturdy ship that can carry people to the other shore. If the teacher is not intelligent and his conduct does not conform to the Dharma, he is not a good master. Having such a person as an Upadhyaya (preceptor) is like a broken ship that sinks in the middle of the sea while trying to cross it, drowning everyone, and the teacher also perishes, with no survivors. The one who initially teaches the Dharma and precepts is the true teacher. Hearing that a great master wants to be her Upadhyaya (preceptor), but the original Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) cannot receive his teachings, she should remotely call his name and pay homage to him as her teacher. It is not necessary to meet in person; if the heart is near, then it is near, if the heart is far, then it is far. Even if the bodies are close, if the minds are discordant, they are as far apart as a billion miles. When a Śrāmaṇerikā (female novice) walks, she must not walk with a man, and must not live in the same room or the same temple with men or Śrāmaṇas (male renunciates). These are the major precepts of the Dharma.
