聞如是:
一時佛在舍衛國。
爾時有一縣,皆奉行佛五戒、十善,一縣界無釀酒者。中有大姓家子,欲遠賈販,臨行父母語其子言:「汝勤持五戒,奉行十善,慎莫飲酒,犯佛重戒。」受教而行。往到他國,見故同學、親友相得歡喜。將歸,出蒲萄酒,欲共飲之。辭曰:「吾國土奉佛五戒,無敢犯者,飲酒後生為人愚癡,不值見佛。且辭親行,父母相誡,以酒蒸仍違教犯戒,罪莫大也。知識區區,別久會同,心雖悅喜,不宜使吾犯戒,違親教也。」
主人言:「吾與卿同師,恩則兄弟,吾親則是子親,父母相欽,豈可違之!若吾在卿家,必順子親。」事不獲已,乃聽飲之。醉臥三日,醒悟,心悔怖懼。
事訖還家,具首于親,父母報言:「汝違吾教,加復犯戒,亂法之漸,非孝子也。無得說之,為國作先。」便以所得物逐令出國,無宜留此。
子以犯戒,為親所逐,乃到他國,住客舍家。主人所事三鬼神能作人,現對面飲食、與人語言。主人事之,積年疲勞,居財空盡,而家疾病、死喪不絕,患厭此鬼,私共論之。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Buddha Speaking on Eliminating Disasters Through Precepts, One Volume Translated by Upasaka Zhi Qian of the Yuezhi Kingdom of Wu Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in Shravasti (a major city in ancient India). At that time, there was a county where everyone observed the Buddha's Five Precepts (no killing, no stealing, no sexual misconduct, no false speech, no intoxicants) and the Ten Virtues (abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, greed, anger, and wrong views). Within the entire county, no one brewed alcohol. Among them was the son of a wealthy family who wanted to travel far for trade. Before leaving, his parents told him, 'You must diligently uphold the Five Precepts, practice the Ten Virtues, and be careful not to drink alcohol, violating the Buddha's serious precepts.' He accepted their teachings and set off. Upon arriving in another country, he met former classmates and friends, and they were delighted to see each other. His friend brought out grape wine, wanting to drink together. He declined, saying, 'My country observes the Buddha's Five Precepts, and no one dares to violate them. After drinking alcohol, one will be foolish in future lives and unable to encounter the Buddha. Moreover, I bid farewell to my parents before leaving, and they warned me not to drink alcohol. Now, indulging in momentary pleasure and violating the teachings and precepts is a great sin. Although friendship is important, and reunion after a long separation is joyful, I should not violate the precepts and disobey my parents' teachings.' The host said, 'You and I were once fellow disciples, and our friendship is like that of brothers. My parents are like your parents, and we respect each other. How can we disobey them! If I were in your home, I would certainly obey your parents.' Unable to refuse, he eventually drank the wine. He was drunk and slept for three days. Upon waking up, he felt remorse and fear. After the matter was over, he returned home and told his parents everything. His parents rebuked him, saying, 'You disobeyed our teachings and violated the precepts. This is the beginning of disrupting the Dharma and is not the act of a filial son. Say no more, this sets a bad example for the country.' So they confiscated the goods he had earned and banished him from the country, not allowing him to stay there. Because the son had violated the precepts, he was driven out by his parents. He then went to another country and stayed in a guesthouse. The owner of the guesthouse served three ghosts who could transform into human form, eat and drink with people face to face, and talk to them. The owner served them, exhausting his energy for many years, and all the family's wealth was depleted. Moreover, illnesses and deaths occurred in the family one after another. They became disgusted with these ghosts and secretly discussed the matter. The ghosts knew what people were thinking
意而患苦之,鬼自相共議:「此人財產空訖,正為吾耳,未曾有益,令相厭患。宜求珍寶以施與之,令其心悅!」便行盜他方國王庫藏好寶,積置園中,報言:「汝事吾歷年,勤苦甚久,今欲福汝,使得饒富,此乃快乎?」主人言:「受大神恩。」鬼曰:「汝園中有金銀,可往取之,方有大福,令得汝愿。」主人欣然入園,見物奇異,負摙歸舍,辭謝受恩:「明日欲設飲食,愿屈顧下。」施設餚饌皆辦,鬼神來詣門,見舍衛國人在主人舍,便奔走而去。主人追呼請還:「今設微供皆已辦具,大神既已顧下,委去何為?」神曰:「卿舍尊客,吾焉得前。」重複驚走。
主人還歸坐自思惟:「吾舍之中,無有異人,正有此人耳!」即出語言,恭設所有,極相娛樂,飲食已竟,因問之曰:「卿有何功德於世?有此吾所事神畏子而走?」客具說佛功德、五戒、十善;實犯酒戒,為親所逐,尚餘四戒,故為天神所營護,卿神不敢當之。主人言:「吾雖事此神,久厭之,今欲奉持佛五戒。」因從客受三自歸、五戒、十善,一心精進,不敢懈怠。問佛所在,可得見不?客曰:「佛在舍衛國給孤獨園中,往立可見。」

【English Translation】 English version: Because (the master) was worried and suffered, the ghosts discussed among themselves: 'This person is now penniless, which is because of us, but he has never brought us any benefit, and instead he feels disgusted with us. It would be better to find treasures to give to him, to make him happy!' So they went to steal treasures from the treasuries of other kings, piled them up in the garden, and (then) told (the master): 'You have served me for many years, working hard for a long time, and now I want to bring you good fortune, to make you rich, isn't that good?' The master said: 'Thank you for the great god's grace.' The ghost said: 'There is gold and silver in your garden, you can go and take it, then you will have great fortune and your wishes will be fulfilled.' The master happily entered the garden, saw these strange treasures, and carried and dragged them back home, thanking (the ghost) for his kindness: 'I want to prepare food and drink tomorrow, I hope you can condescend to visit.' (The master) prepared all kinds of dishes, and the ghost came to the door, saw the person from Śrāvastī (舍衛國) in the master's house, and ran away. The master chased after him and called him back: 'Now the meager offerings that have been prepared are all ready, since the great god has already visited, why do you want to leave?' The god said: 'You have a distinguished guest in your house, how can I enter?' (After saying this) he fled in panic again. The master went back and sat there thinking to himself: 'In my house, there is no one else, only this person!' So he went out and spoke to the guest, respectfully took out everything, and entertained him to the fullest extent. After the meal, he asked him: 'What merit do you have in the world? Why does the god I serve fear you and run away?' The guest explained in detail the Buddha's (佛) merits, the Five Precepts (五戒), and the Ten Virtues (十善); (saying that) he had indeed broken the precept against alcohol, and was driven out by his relatives, but he still had four precepts left, so he was protected by the gods, and your god dared not oppose you.' The master said: 'Although I serve this god, I have long been disgusted with him, and now I want to uphold the Buddha's Five Precepts.' So he received the Three Refuges (三自歸), the Five Precepts, and the Ten Virtues from the guest, and was diligent with all his heart, not daring to be lazy. He asked where the Buddha was, and could he be seen? The guest said: 'The Buddha is in the Jeta Grove (給孤獨園) in Śrāvastī, you can see him if you go there.' The master went there with all his heart, passing through a pavilion, in which there was a dignified woman, who was the wife of a man-eating ghost (啖人鬼). A man was traveling a long distance, and it was getting late, so he asked the woman for a night's lodging.
宿,女即報言:「慎勿留此,宜急前去。」男子問曰:「用何等故,將有意乎?」女人報曰:「吾已語卿,用復問為?」男子自念:「前舍衛國人,完佛四戒,我神尚為畏之乃爾,我已受三自歸、五戒、十善,心不懈怠,何畏懼乎!」遂自留宿。啖人鬼見護戒威神徘徊其旁,去亭四十里,一宿不歸。
明日男子進路,見鬼所啖人骸骨狼藉,衣毛為起,心怖而悔,退自思惟:「我在本國,家居衣食極快足用,空為此人所化,言佛在舍衛國,未睹奇妙,反見骸骨縱橫,惡意更生。」自念不如還彼女人,將歸本土,共居如故,不亦樂乎。即時回還還至亭所,因從女人復求留宿。女人謂男子:「何復還耶?」答曰:「行計不成,故回還耳,復寄一宿。」女言:「卿死矣,吾夫是啖人鬼,方來不久,卿急去。」此男子不信,遂止不去,心更迷惑,淫意復生,不復信佛三自歸之德、五戒、十善之心,天神即去,無復護之。鬼得來還,女人恐鬼食此男子,哀愍藏之甕中,鬼聞人氣謂婦言:「爾得肉耶?吾欲啖之。」婦言:「我不行。何從得肉?」婦問鬼:「卿昨夜何以不歸?」鬼言:「坐汝所為而舍尊客宿,令吾見逐。」甕中男子逾益恐怖,不復識三自歸意。婦言:「卿何以不得肉乎?」鬼言:「正為汝舍佛弟子,天神逐我出

【English Translation】 English version The woman then told the man, 'Do not stay here, you should leave quickly.' The man asked, 'For what reason, is something going to happen?' The woman replied, 'I have already told you, why do you ask again?' The man thought to himself, 'Before, the people of Shravasti, merely observing the four precepts of the Buddha, my spirit was still afraid of them to such an extent. Now I have taken refuge in the Three Jewels, observed the five precepts, and practiced the ten good deeds, my mind is not lax, what is there to fear!' So he stayed for the night. The man-eating ghost saw the majestic spirit protecting the precepts hovering beside him, and left the pavilion forty miles away, not returning for the night.
The next day, the man continued on his way, and saw the bones of the people eaten by the ghost scattered in a mess. His hair stood on end, and he felt fear and regret. He retreated and thought to himself, 'In my own country, my family's clothing and food were very sufficient. I was deceived by this person in vain, saying that the Buddha is in Shravasti. I have not seen anything wonderful, but instead I have seen bones lying everywhere, and even more evil thoughts have arisen.' He thought it would be better to return to that woman, take her back to his homeland, and live together as before, wouldn't that be happy. He immediately returned to the pavilion, and then asked the woman to stay for the night again. The woman said to the man, 'Why have you come back?' He replied, 'The journey was not successful, so I came back, let me stay for one more night.' The woman said, 'You are doomed, my husband is a man-eating ghost, he will be back soon, you leave quickly.' This man did not believe her, so he stayed and did not leave, his mind became even more confused, and lustful thoughts arose again. He no longer believed in the merits of the Buddha's Three Refuges, the power of the five precepts, and the ten good deeds. The heavenly gods left, and no longer protected him. The ghost came back, and the woman was afraid that the ghost would eat this man, so she took pity on him and hid him in a jar. The ghost smelled the human scent and said to his wife, 'Did you get meat? I want to eat it.' The wife said, 'I did not go out, where would I get meat?' The wife asked the ghost, 'Why didn't you come back last night?' The ghost said, 'Because you let the honored guest stay, causing me to be driven away.' The man in the jar became even more terrified, and no longer remembered the meaning of the Three Refuges. The wife said, 'Why can't you get meat?' The ghost said, 'Precisely because you took in the Buddha's disciple, the heavenly gods drove me out.'
四十里外,露宿震怖,於今不安,故不得肉。」婦聞默喜,因問其夫:「佛戒云何悉所奉持?」鬼言:「我大饑極,急以肉來,不須問此,此是無上正真之戒,非吾所敢說也。」婦言:「為說之,我當與卿肉。」
鬼類貪殘,欲食無止,婦迫問之,因便為說三自歸、五重戒:一曰慈仁不殺;二曰清信不盜;三曰守貞不淫;四曰口無妄言;五曰孝順不醉。鬼初說一戒時婦輒受之,五戒心執口誦,男子于甕中識五戒,隨受之。天帝釋知此二人心自歸佛,即選善神五十人,擁護兩人,鬼遂走去。
到明日,婦問男子:「怖乎?」答曰:「大怖!蒙仁者恩,心悟識佛。」婦言男子:「昨何以回還?」答曰:「吾見新久死人骸骨,縱橫恐畏,故屈還耳。」婦言:「骨是吾所棄者也,吾本良家之女,為鬼所掠,取吾作妻,悲窮無訴,今蒙仁恩,得聞佛戒,得離此鬼。」婦言:「賢者今欲到何所?」男子報言:「吾欲到舍衛國見佛。」婦曰:「善哉!吾置本國及父母,隨賢者見佛。」便俱前行,逢四百九十八人,因相問訊:「諸賢者從何所來,欲到何所?」答曰:「吾等從佛所來。」問言:「卿等已得見佛,何為復去?」報言:「佛日說經,意中惘惘故尚不解,今還本國。」

【English Translation】 English version 『Forty miles away, I slept in the open, terrified and uneasy, so I couldn't get any meat.』 The woman was secretly pleased to hear this, and asked her husband, 『What are the Buddha's precepts that you uphold?』 The ghost replied, 『I am extremely hungry, quickly bring me the meat, don't ask about these things. These are the supreme and truly correct precepts, I dare not speak of them.』 The woman said, 『If you tell me about them, I will give you meat.』 Ghosts are greedy and cruel, their desire to eat is endless. The woman pressed him to ask, and the ghost then spoke of the Three Refuges (taking refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha) and the Five Precepts: first, compassion and kindness, not killing; second, purity and honesty, not stealing; third, guarding chastity, not committing adultery; fourth, no false speech; fifth, filial piety and no drunkenness. When the ghost first spoke of the first precept, the woman accepted it immediately. She kept the five precepts in her heart and recited them. The man in the jar understood the five precepts and accepted them as well. Sakra, Lord of the Devas (a Buddhist protector deity), knowing that these two had developed the intention to take refuge in the Buddha, selected fifty good spirits to protect them, and the ghost fled. The next day, the woman asked the man, 『Are you afraid?』 The man replied, 『Very afraid! Thanks to your kindness, my heart has awakened and recognized the Buddha.』 The woman asked the man, 『Why did you return yesterday?』 The man replied, 『I saw the bones of newly and long-dead people, scattered in disarray, and I was terrified, so I returned.』 The woman said, 『Those bones were discarded by me. I was originally a woman from a good family, abducted by a ghost who took me as his wife. I was sad and impoverished with no one to turn to. Now, thanks to your kindness, I have heard the Buddha's precepts and can leave this ghost.』 The woman asked, 『Where does the worthy one wish to go now?』 The man replied, 『I wish to go to Shravasti (an ancient Indian kingdom) to see the Buddha.』 The woman said, 『Excellent! I will abandon my homeland and parents and follow the worthy one to see the Buddha.』 So they went together and met four hundred and ninety-eight people, who greeted each other: 『Where do you worthy ones come from, and where do you wish to go?』 They replied, 『We come from the Buddha.』 The woman asked, 『You have already seen the Buddha, why are you returning?』 They replied, 『The Buddha preaches the sutras every day, but we are confused in our hearts and still do not understand, so we are returning to our homeland.』 The two worthy ones explained the whole story in detail, explaining that the ghost feared the precepts and that their conduct was noble.
人,意乃開解,俱還見佛。
佛遙見之,則笑,口中五色光出,阿難長跪:「佛不妄笑,將有所說。」佛語阿難:「汝見是四百九十八人還不?」對曰:「見之。」佛言:「此四百九十八人,今得其本師,來見佛者,皆當得道。」五百人至佛所前,為佛作禮,一心聽經,心開意解,皆作沙門,得阿羅漢道。
佛言:「犯酒戒者,則是客舍主人,與此女人累世兄弟也;然此二人是四百九十八人前世之師也。世人求道,要當得其本師及其善友,爾乃解耳。」
佛說經竟,諸比丘皆大歡喜,前為佛作禮而去。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 人,如果能夠領悟其中的道理,最終都能見到佛。 佛遠遠地看見他們,就笑了,口中發出五色光芒。阿難(Ananda,佛陀的十大弟子之一)長跪說道:『佛陀不會無緣無故地笑,將要有所說法。』佛告訴阿難:『你看見這四百九十八人了嗎?』阿難回答說:『看見了。』佛說:『這四百九十八人,如今找到了他們的本師(根本的老師),前來見佛,都應當能夠得道。』這五百人來到佛陀面前,向佛行禮,一心聽經,心意開解,都出家做了沙門(Shramana,佛教出家人的通稱),證得了阿羅漢(Arhat,斷盡煩惱,證得解脫的聖者)的果位。 佛說:『犯酒戒的人,就是那家客舍的主人,與那個女人是累世的兄弟。然而這二人是四百九十八人前世的老師。世人求道,一定要找到他們的本師以及善友(良師益友),才能得到解脫。』 佛說完這部經,眾比丘(Bhiksu,佛教出家男眾)都非常歡喜,上前向佛行禮后離去。 《佛說戒消災經》一卷
【English Translation】 English version: People, if they can understand the meaning, will eventually see the Buddha. The Buddha saw them from afar and smiled, and five-colored light emanated from his mouth. Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha) knelt down and said, 'The Buddha does not smile without a reason; he is about to say something.' The Buddha said to Ananda, 'Do you see these four hundred and ninety-eight people?' Ananda replied, 'I see them.' The Buddha said, 'These four hundred and ninety-eight people, now having found their original teacher (fundamental teacher), have come to see the Buddha, and all of them shall attain enlightenment.' The five hundred people came before the Buddha, paid homage to the Buddha, listened to the sutra with one mind, their minds opened and understood, and they all became Shramanas (Buddhist renunciates), attaining the state of Arhat (a perfected person who has attained nirvana). The Buddha said, 'The one who violates the precept against alcohol is the owner of that inn, and he and that woman are brothers in countless lifetimes. However, these two are the teachers of the four hundred and ninety-eight people in their previous lives. People seeking the Way must find their original teacher and good friends (beneficial companions) in order to be liberated.' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, all the Bhiksus (Buddhist monks) were very happy, stepped forward to pay homage to the Buddha, and departed.
