Translated by An Shih-kao, a Tripiṭaka Master from the Parthian Kingdom during the Later Han Dynasty
The Buddha was in Rājagṛha (王舍城) on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (靈鷲山), at that time sitting with twelve hundred and fifty Bhikshus and one thousand Bodhisattvas.
The foremost disciple, Śāriputra (舍利弗), arose, knelt on his long knees, and, with palms together, asked the Buddha, 'If there are good men and good women who wish to seek the Buddha's path, and if they have committed evil deeds in previous lives, how should they repent?' The Buddha said, 'Excellent, excellent! Śāriputra! Your concern for the gods and people is truly commendable.' The Buddha said, 'If there are good men and good women who wish to seek the path of an Arhat (阿羅漢), who wish to seek the path of a Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛), who wish to seek the path of a Buddha, who wish to know about past and future events, they should always, at dawn, midday, sunset, when people are settled, midnight, and cockcrow, bathe and rinse their mouths, tidy their clothes, and, with palms together, bow to the ten directions. Facing the direction they are in, they should repent, saying: 'I, so-and-so, from countless kalpas (劫) ago, have committed transgressions and evils, up to this life's acts of lust and licentiousness, acts of anger and hatred, acts of ignorance and delusion, not knowing when the Buddha was in the world, not knowing when the Dharma existed, not knowing when the Sangha of Bhikshus existed, not knowing the standards of good and evil. If the body has committed transgressions, if the mouth has committed transgressions, if the mind has committed transgressions, if the intention has committed transgressions, if there was an intention to harm the Buddha, to be jealous and resentful of the Sutras and the Buddha's path, if there was strife within the Sangha of Bhikshus, if there was the killing of an Arhat, if there was the personal killing of parents. If the three karmas of the body, the four karmas of the mouth, and the three karmas of the mind were committed, personally killing living beings, instigating others to kill living beings, rejoicing in seeing others kill living beings; personally stealing, instigating others to steal, rejoicing in seeing others steal; personally deceiving others, instigating others to deceive others, rejoicing in seeing others deceive others; personally engaging in divisive speech, instigating others to engage in divisive speech, rejoicing in seeing others engage in divisive speech; personally cursing others, instigating others to curse others, rejoicing in seeing others curse others; personally lying and deceiving, instigating others to lie and deceive, rejoicing in seeing others lie and deceive; personally being jealous of others, instigating others to be jealous of others, seeing'

Those who wish to attain the Sotapanna path (Sotapanna, Stream-enterer) and no longer fall into the Niraya (Niraya, hell) should all repent their faults. Those who wish to attain the Sakadagami path (Sakadagami, Once-returner), to be reborn in heaven as humans; those who wish to attain the Anagami path (Anagami, Non-returner), to ascend to the twenty-four heavens; those who wish to attain the Arhat path (Arhat, Worthy One), to enter Nirvana; those who wish to attain the Arhat path in this world; those who wish to attain the Pratyekabuddha path (Pratyekabuddha, Solitary Buddha); those who wish to know about past and future events should all repent their faults and not conceal them.
The Buddha said to Sariputra (Sariputra, foremost in wisdom): 'If there are good men and good women, they should bow three times a day, paying homage to all the Buddhas present in the ten directions. All the Buddhas in the ten directions teach the people of the world with impartiality, causing the people illuminated by the sun and moon to do good. The Buddha nourishes the world with the teachings of the sutras, just as the heavens send down rain, causing all grains, grasses, and trees to flourish beautifully. The Buddha nourishes the world with the teachings of the sutras, thus producing lords, kings, the Four Heavenly Kings, and even the wealthy and joyful beings in the Thirty-three Heavens. The Buddha enables beings to attain the fruits of Sotapanna, Sakadagami, Anagami, and Arhat. May the Buddhas in the ten directions hear what we say: 'All the good and evil deeds done by the people of the world, including all creatures that crawl and fly, whether they are donors, those who uphold the precepts and diligently practice without violating the sutras and precepts, those who are compassionate towards the people, those who do immeasurable good, those who give to Bodhisattvas and all Bhikkhu Sanghas, those who give to ordinary people and the poor, and even those who show compassion to birds and beasts, we encourage them to do good and help them rejoice. We help all those people who have been liberated by the Buddhas of the past and have attained Nirvana to rejoice. We help all those who will be taught by the Buddhas of the future to do good, to stay away from the five evils and the path of birth and death, and who will eventually attain the Arhat and Pratyekabuddha paths, we encourage them and make them happy, so that they do good like the Buddhas. Now, for those whom the Buddhas present in the ten directions are about to liberate, teaching them to give alms without violating the sutras and precepts, to be compassionate towards the people and all creatures that crawl and fly, so that they may escape from the suffering of hell, beasts, the preta realm, ignorance, and poverty, and eventually attain the paths of Sotapanna, Sakadagami, Anagami, Arhat, Pratyekabuddha, and Nirvana, we all'

The Buddha said to Śāriputra (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, foremost in wisdom): 「If there are good men and good women, they should prostrate themselves three times each day and night, bowing to the Buddhas of the ten directions and saying: 『May the Buddhas listen to what we say. The Buddha said to Śāriputra: 「When we were Bodhisattvas in past lives, we encouraged and delighted the Buddhas to preach the Dharma and not to enter Parinirvana yet. It is for this reason that we were able to become Buddhas. The first Four Heavenly Kings (Cāturmahārājakāyikas, guardian deities of Buddhism) and the second Heavenly King Śakra (the lord of the gods) came down, joined their palms, and begged us to protect us and preach the Dharma for the sake of gods and people. Countless gods informed us not to enter Parinirvana yet.」

【English Translation】 English version: 'Those who do good will receive blessings, and those who do evil will suffer the consequences of their actions.'
Śāriputra (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his wisdom) said to the Buddha: 'If there are good men and good women who wish to seek the path of Buddhahood, how should they make vows in order to attain it?'
The Buddha said: 'If there are good men and good women, they should prostrate themselves three times each morning and evening, and report to the Buddhas of the ten directions: 'May the Buddhas of the ten directions listen. The merits that we have accumulated from countless kalpas (aeons) in our past lives, whether it be through giving, reciting scriptures, or holding good intentions, doing good deeds for the Buddha, doing good deeds for the scriptures, doing good deeds for the bhikṣu-saṃgha (Buddhist monastic community), doing good deeds for ordinary people, or doing good deeds for birds and beasts, those who do evil will suffer the consequences of their actions, those who do good will receive blessings, and repent for evil deeds.' Uphold the precepts of the scriptures without violating them, if one has taken vows, do not have relations with women, if one encourages people to gladly do good deeds for all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and all people, if one urges the Buddhas not to enter parinirvāṇa (the passing away of a Buddha or Arhat). We gather all the merits we have gained from learning the path of Buddhahood, and with a good heart, bestow them upon all people in the ten directions, our parents, and all creatures that crawl and fly, so that they may all receive blessings. Let me receive the remaining small amount of blessings, so that I may practice the path of Buddhahood and propagate the Buddhist scriptures, and for those who have not yet been liberated, I shall liberate them, for those who have not yet been freed, I shall help them to be freed, for those who have not yet attained nirvāṇa (the state of liberation from the cycle of birth and death), I shall help them to attain nirvāṇa.'
The Buddha said to Śāriputra: 'Even if all the men and women in the world attain the state of arhat (a perfected being who has attained liberation) and pratyekabuddha (a solitary Buddha who attains enlightenment on their own), if someone were to make offerings to all the arhats and pratyekabuddhas in the world for a thousand years, would their merit be great?'
Śāriputra said: 'Even offering to one arhat or pratyekabuddha for one day brings immeasurable merit, how much more so to offer to all the arhats and pratyekabuddhas in the world for a thousand years?'
The Buddha said: 'Offering to all the arhats and pratyekabuddhas in the world for a thousand years is not as good as reciting the Repentance Sutra three times each morning and evening for just one day. The merit gained from this surpasses the merit of offering to all the arhats and pratyekabuddhas in the world by a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, or a hundred million times.'
