【English Translation】 English version: The Buddha Speaks the Mahayana Precepts Sutra

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Shi Hu, Minister of the Honglu Temple and Great Master of Spreading the Dharma, under Imperial Decree, from the Western Regions.

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti (Śrāvastī).

At that time, the World Honored One told the bhikshus (bhikṣu): 'There are those who destroy their precepts and conduct, and their lifespan; there are those who cut off their roots of goodness. It is difficult to become a renunciate; generate a mind of diligence and firmly guard your precepts. If you bhikshus, etc., seek liberation in the Buddhadharma, you must stay away from all evil and suffering. As the Buddha said, rather give up your life and go towards impermanence, than to indulge your mind and violate the precepts. If a person gives up their life, they only ruin one lifetime; if they break the precepts, they will cause millions of lifetimes to sink into evil paths. If a person upholds the precepts, they will be able to see the Buddha. Precepts are the supreme adornment, precepts are the supreme wonderful fragrance, precepts are the superior cause of joy. The substance of precepts is pure, like cool water, able to remove heat and vexation. The Dharma of precepts is the greatest; worldly mantras, the poison of dragons and snakes cannot invade it. Upholding the precepts brings fame, upholding the precepts brings happiness; thus, at the time of death, one will be reborn in the heavens.'

The Buddha said: 'Bhikshus! If you violate the Vinaya, it is like a blind person who cannot see colors, or like a person without feet who cannot walk the path, staying away from Nirvana (nirvāṇa), unable to reach the other shore. If a person upholds the precepts, they accomplish all Dharma treasures, like a virtuous vase, complete and firm, able to hold all precious jewels. If such a vase is broken, the jewels will be scattered; if you break the Vinaya, you will abandon all good Dharmas. If you have previously violated the precepts, and then your mind desires to seek Nirvana, it is like losing your eyes and ears, and looking at your face in a mirror, what use is there!'

The Buddha said: 'Bhikshus! Women have no trustworthiness, and should not be approached; the king's favor, though superior, cannot be relied upon; foam on the water is unreal, and cannot be grasped; wealth and nobility are impermanent, and cannot be lived in for long; appearance is like a flower, changing in an instant; life is like a ripe fruit.

【English Translation】 English version: Do not linger for long, like crossing a river in a swift current, like temporarily dwelling in a dilapidated house; rather eat poison than drink alcohol; rather enter a great fire than indulge in desires!

After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the bhiksus (bhiksu, Buddhist monks) and all the bodhisattvas (bodhisattva, one who aspires to become a Buddha) were all greatly rejoiced, believed, accepted, and practiced it.
