西天譯經三藏朝散大夫試鴻臚卿傳梵大師賜紫沙門臣法護等奉詔譯

歸命一切佛!惟愿一切佛、菩薩眾攝受於我!即說伽陀頌曰:

「我今歸命勝菩提,  最上清凈佛法眾,  我發廣大菩提心,  自他利益皆成就。  懺除一切不善業,  隨喜無邊眾福蘊,  先當不食一日中,  后修八眾長養法。」

當知八種長養法者,所謂八戒,弟子應于阿阇梨前二三重複。說是伽陀已,次復當稱己之名字:「我名某甲,惟愿阿阇梨攝受於我。我從今時發凈信心,乃至坐菩提場,成等正覺。誓歸依佛,二足勝尊;誓歸依法,離欲勝尊;誓歸依僧,調伏勝尊。如是三寶是所歸趣。我某甲凈信優婆塞,惟愿阿阇梨憶持護念我。從今日今時發起凈心,乃至過是夜分,訖于明旦日初出時,于其中間奉持八戒。所謂:一、不殺生,二、不偷盜,三、不非梵行,四、不妄語,五、不飲酒,六、不非時食,七、不花鬘莊嚴其身及歌舞戲等,八、不坐臥高廣大床。我今舍離如是等事,誓願不捨清凈禁戒八種功德。」二三重複作如是說。又言:「我持戒行,莊嚴其心,令心喜悅,廣修一切相

The Sutra on the Eight Kinds of Meritorious Practices for Nourishment Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Fa Hu and others from the Western Regions, who held positions such as Chao San Da Fu, Shi Hong Lu Qing, and Chuan Fan Da Shi, and were bestowed the title of Purple-Robed Monks, under imperial decree.

I take refuge in all Buddhas! May all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas embrace me! Then he spoke the following Gatha:

'I now take refuge in the supreme Bodhi (supreme enlightenment),  the most supreme and pure Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, I generate the vast Bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment),  accomplishing benefit for both myself and others. I repent and eliminate all unwholesome karma,  rejoicing in the boundless accumulation of blessings, First, I shall abstain from food for one day,  then cultivate the eight kinds of practices for nourishment.'

It should be known that the eight kinds of practices for nourishment are the eight precepts. Disciples should repeat them two or three times before the Acharya (teacher). After reciting the Gatha, one should then state one's name: 'I am named so-and-so. May the Acharya (teacher) embrace me. From this moment on, I generate pure faith, until I sit at the Bodhi field (place of enlightenment) and attain complete and perfect enlightenment (samyak-sambodhi). I vow to take refuge in the Buddha, the supreme among two-legged beings; I vow to take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme in detachment; I vow to take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme in taming. These Three Jewels are my refuge. I, so-and-so, a pure-faith Upasaka (layman), wish that the Acharya (teacher) will remember and protect me. From this day and this moment, I generate a pure mind, until the end of this night and until the sunrise of the next morning, during which time I will uphold the eight precepts. They are: 1. Not to kill, 2. Not to steal, 3. Not to engage in unchaste conduct (non-brahmacharya), 4. Not to lie, 5. Not to drink alcohol, 6. Not to eat at improper times, 7. Not to adorn the body with garlands and not to engage in singing, dancing, and other entertainment, 8. Not to sit or lie on high and large beds. I now renounce such things and vow not to abandon the pure precepts and the eight kinds of merits.' Repeat this two or three times. And say: 'I uphold the precepts, adorn my mind, make my mind joyful, and extensively cultivate all aspects.'


應勝行,求成佛果,究竟圓滿。」又說伽陀曰:

「我發無二最上心,  為諸眾生不請友,  勝菩提行善所行,  成佛世間廣利益。  愿我乘是善業故,  此世不久成正覺,  說法饒益於世間,  解說眾生三有苦。」

【English Translation】 English version: 'One should strive with excellent conduct to achieve Buddhahood, ultimately reaching perfect fulfillment.' Furthermore, he spoke a Gatha (verse): 『I generate the unsurpassed supreme mind, becoming an uninvited friend to all sentient beings, With excellent Bodhi conduct as the best practice, achieving Buddhahood to widely benefit the world.
