【English Translation】 English version 'Verses on the Treatise on Examining General Characteristics', one fascicle Composed by Bodhisattva Dignāga (Chenna pusa) Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Yijing (San Zang Fa Shi Yi Jing) under Imperial Order For those who delight in brevity, the outline has already been made clear. If there are those who love elaborate texts, for them, the general characteristics are explained. Relying on sound and the understanding of meaning, with conventional language as the foundation. This is the discourse on examining general characteristics; this verse encompasses sound and meaning. So-called sound and meaning, these two; here, there are two kinds of wisdom. Named the wisdom of sound and meaning combined; taking them as the foundation. So-called the meaning of cause, through the speech of sentient beings. With sound, meaning, and wisdom as the foundation, therefore, summarized into verses. Sound, meaning, and the meaning of wisdom; therefore, this treatise is briefly composed. Question: The connection between name and meaning is based on conventional speech. Why is it now said that it is merely distinguishing sound and meaning? Answer: It is not so; even if there are connected sounds. There are only name and meaning, those who admit to having a common characteristic. What is explained and what can explain, here there is rational proof. All are included herein, the so-called nature of non-separation. Only then is mutual connection allowed, so it is not separately explained now. Because the name that can explain, etc., is only limited to the aspect of connection. Understanding the meaning that is explained, therefore, with the nature of general characteristics. Only then can it be understood; it will be explained in detail later. Therefore, only sound, meaning, and wisdom, the principle of connection can be established. There are other intentions as well; here, name and meaning, these two. Have three kinds of differences, namely sound and meaning, these two. 'Verses on the Treatise on Examining General Characteristics', one fascicle
