'The Collection of Wise and Holy Verses: One Hundred Verses'

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Tian Xizai (translator's title and name) of the Western Heaven Translation Bureau, Grand Master of Mingjiao, Minister of the Honglu Temple, commissioned by imperial decree.

I bow to all who have transcended the world, the most honored in the three realms, the ocean of merit. The fire of wisdom can burn away the defilements of affliction. To the Right Enlightenment, I now offer my life in reverence. I bow to that which can pull us from the perils of birth and death, completely drying up the oceans of worry, affliction, greed, and ignorance, destroying the mountains of worldly toil and sinful karma. I now bow in reverence to the wondrous Dharma Jewel. I bow to all that the Buddhas praise, adorned with the practice of the Eightfold Noble Path, with the non-action of meditative concentration gradually becoming complete and bright. I now bow in reverence to the Sangha Jewel. Inner palace treasuries, various pavilions and towers, gold, jade, mani jewels of various lights, adorned extensively with pearl necklaces, hundreds of thousands of gods and humans constantly roam and tread. If one can dwell peacefully in the heavenly realms, repairing and adorning Buddhist temples will bring this reward. With faith, return and revere the Three Jewels, giving alms and wealth to the monasteries. Having received the joy of humans and gods, one shall attain the fruit of Nirvana's stillness and extinction. Monasteries, with years of age, are often destroyed and damaged; repairing and adorning them, making offerings to the Buddhas and Sangha. One will constantly obtain joy, dwelling among humans and gods, and also attain the fruit of Nirvana's stillness and extinction. If one donates gardens, seating, clothing, medicine, and the like to monasteries. And if one encounters times of famine and difficulty in an evil age, giving drinks and food to those sentient beings, in this way, one obtains boundless blessings and acquires the seven holy treasures of the wise. Eliminating all the suffering of the evil paths, forever receiving great wealth without end, the places where the Buddhas and Tathagatas walk and dwell, if people arrive and generate reverence. Serving and making offerings, and also hearing the Dharma, deeply believing, cultivating, learning, and relying on precepts and conduct, one shall obtain vast and boundless fruits, like the vast and deep ocean. Using a vessel to measure, one cannot calculate its depth; the causes and conditions of blessings and virtues are also like this. If people construct Buddhist halls, cold, heat, wind, and rain cannot invade. One will be the first to attain the Dharma of stillness and extinction, fulfilling all wishes at will.

【English Translation】 English version If a person sculpts or paints a Buddha image, they will be liberated from sorrow, affliction, and disease. They will also be reborn in the heavens, obtaining a supremely wonderful body, possessing great wisdom, auspiciousness, and nobility. If a person repairs a Buddha image, they will obtain a firm and healthy body. Longevity, beauty, strength, and all auspicious marks will be complete, and ultimately they will attain the peaceful bliss of Nirvana (Nirvana). Sorrow, affliction, and disputes will all be eliminated, and they will possess courageous eloquence, praised by people. They will be able to subdue the senses, diligently strive, be adorned with all beauty, and be respected by the masses. If a person repairs Buddha images, etc., they will be far from faults and be reborn in the heavens. Wealthy, noble, and beautiful, they will be admired by the masses, and all blessings will be complete. If a damaged stupa or temple is repaired, that person will have a healthy and complete body. All the beloved fruits of the world, and all things desired, will be complete. If a Buddha image or stupa is built, even if the size is as small as a grain of wheat. Not only in the heavens and the human realm, but they will surely become a king and enjoy happiness. The same applies to beings in the Form Realm (Rūpadhātu) and the Formless Realm (Arūpadhātu), their wealth and nobility will be boundless and immeasurable. They will be free from the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and ultimately attain Bodhi (Bodhi), accomplishing the perfect Buddhahood. If relics (Śarīra) are enshrined in a stupa or temple, and Buddha images are painted and offered. They will obtain the light of Buddha's wisdom, an extremely great field of merit, the Sugata's (Sugata) pure and wonderful Buddha wealth. Dwelling in the boundless realm of sentient beings, they will together enter the equal and non-dual nature. If a stupa and a cakra (cakra) are placed on a quiet mountain peak. Even if the size is like a finger joint, they will be reborn among all humans and gods. With a noble and beautiful appearance, great wealth and honor, and stable appearance and strength, they will later become a god of the Thirty-three Heavens (Trāyastriṃśa). If a person opens a stupa with their hand, they will obtain wealth and completeness. Their body will be radiant, their heart gentle, knowledgeable, their nature pure, and without hatred. If a wise person practices generosity, offering fragrant paste and white sandalwood to the Buddha. As well as kumkuma (kumkuma) and various other fragrances, they will obtain vast and beloved rewards. If a person believes in the Buddha and rejoices, offering wonderful fragrant flowers and music. Making various offerings to the Buddha Tathagata, they will be reborn in the heavens and experience a jeweled pond. With the fine fragrant stamens of the lotus flowers in that pond, they will be smeared all over their body and bathe. The water of Mānakinī (Mānakinī) is pure, and entering it will remove defilements.


自然除  波濤流涌噴香冷  寶岸紅蓮周匝開  天等睹斯恒適意  給施佛僧得此報  如是功德不可量  是故諸經結頌讚  名衣及上服  施佛及施僧  後生天界時  最上天衣香  青黃種種色  百千摩尼寶  而用作莊嚴  富貴而無量  快樂亦無邊  獲斯勝妙果  若人生世間  而得作國王  具足諸色相  上妙繒綵衣  種種殊勝香  隨身恒受用  皆因施佛衣  成就如斯報  若有生天界  種種寶莊嚴  身掛珠瓔珞  頭戴寶玉冠  耳镮及腕釧  如是富快樂  施佛莊嚴具  獲天勝妙果

【English Translation】 English version Natural Elimination The waves surge and spray a cool fragrance, red lotuses bloom all around the precious shore. Devas (gods) and others who behold this scene are always pleased; this is the reward for giving to the Buddha and the Sangha (monastic community). Such merit is immeasurable, therefore all sutras conclude with verses of praise. Giving precious clothes and superior garments to the Buddha and the Sangha, In future lives, when reborn in the heavens, one will obtain the finest heavenly garments, emitting fragrance. The heavenly garments appear in various colors such as blue and yellow, adorned with hundreds and thousands of Mani jewels (wish-fulfilling jewels), Thus becoming wealthy and boundless, with endless joy, obtaining this supreme and wonderful fruit. If someone is born into the world and becomes a king, Possessing all kinds of beautiful features, wearing superior silk and colorful garments, All kinds of excellent fragrances are constantly enjoyed. This is all because of giving clothes to the Buddha, achieving such a reward. If someone is born in the heavens, adorned with various treasures, Wearing pearl necklaces, a crown of precious jade on the head, Earrings and bracelets on the wrists, being so rich and happy, It is because of giving ornaments to the Buddha, obtaining the supreme and wonderful fruit of the heavens. If one becomes a great king, with a broad and majestic appearance, Wearing necklaces and Mani jewels (wish-fulfilling jewels), with the tinkling sound of ornaments. This is also the reward of giving ornaments in the field of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). Wise people, with pure minds, give flower garlands to the Buddha, In the heavens and in the human realm, they constantly obtain happiness. In future lives, They will achieve the Seven Factors of Enlightenment, and be reborn in the heavenly mountains, Becoming the lord of Indra (ruler of the devas), with his retinue, Playing and frolicking in the gardens, offering various flowers, Thus obtaining such a fruit. Using lapis lazuli, true pearls, and jewels, As well as gold, silver, blue, and green colors, to adorn parasols, The parasols are round like the full moon, whether king or minister, Using them to cover the head, as the Buddha said, this is because, Giving parasols brings the reward of liberation from greed and sorrow, Being free from illness, constantly peaceful and happy, and becoming a king in the world again, This is also the reward of giving parasols. If in a pagoda or temple, One gives banners, they will become a Chakravartin (universal ruler), No one in the world can defeat them, they are far from all sins, Among all beings, they become the most honored leader.

【English Translation】 English version One constantly receives offerings from people. If someone in a stupa or temple, offers bells and other items, they will not be born in a place of sin and evil, and will often be able to hear pure Brahma sounds. If someone plays music, such as zithers, harps, drums, and trumpets, to offer to the Buddhas and sages, making them feel happy in their hearts when they hear it, then they will obtain the heavenly ear root (the capacity to hear sounds of the heavenly realm), their body will be adorned and always pure, and they will obtain Vajra wisdom (indestructible wisdom), destroying the mountain of afflictions. If one generates a sincere and joyful heart, using beautiful colors, fragrances, and tastes, as well as various delicious foods and drinks, to offer to the Buddhas and others, then they will be reborn in the heavenly realm, sitting on a jeweled throne with their family, eating heavenly delicacies with Mani jewel vessels (vessels made of wish-fulfilling jewels), and will never experience famine or war. If someone offers food and drink to the assembly of sages and virtuous ones, then they will be reborn in the human and heavenly realms, always having abundant delicious food, and the most superior of all kinds of food, constantly respected and loved by the wise. If one gives wonderful food to those who have left home to practice, then they will often obtain a wealthy and happy body, possessing good eloquence and longevity, with appearance and strength complete, such is the karmic reward of giving food. If with a compassionate heart, one offers sweet honey water, ghee, cheese, milk, and other drinks, allowing those who are thirsty and weak to drink, bringing them peace and happiness, then they will also receive the aforementioned karmic rewards. If one offers Haritaki (a medicinal herb), forest vines, and various medicinal herbs, giving them to the sages and virtuous ones, then they will be reborn in the human and heavenly realms, without illness and with longevity, constantly obtaining peace and happiness of body and mind. Furthermore, offering drinks, one will later be reborn in the heavenly palace, the Kalpa tree (a tree in the heavenly realm that can transform into various objects at will) with its flowers flourishing and fragrant, whatever is sought can be obtained at will, using jeweled vessels to hold fine wine and honey, drinking together with family. Moreover, on that Kalpa tree, various adornments can be produced, with singing girls singing, playing heavenly music, and so on, making the hearts of the heavenly beings happy, and nectar will also follow, offering drinks can obtain such rewards. If someone sets up a vegetarian feast for offering, then they will be able to be reborn in the human and heavenly realms, far from poverty and cold, with longevity and abundant wealth. If one uses elephants, horses, etc., carriages and palanquins (vehicles for people to ride in), to offer to the Buddha Tathagata, then they will obtain great supernatural powers. If one offers shoes, socks, and other items, they will always be born into noble families, often possessing elephants, horses, and carriages, forever free from poverty and hardship. 【English Translation】 English version Regarding Illnesses If a person diligently attends (offers services), then in all places, whatever he seeks will be accomplished. If he gives seating and other items, he will be born in the heavens, free from hardship and toil, always sitting on excellent seats. If he gives furnished bedding, he will be constantly happy after being born in the heavens, with a broad and upright physique, praised by people and fearless. If he cultivates and plants various gardens, and decorates various houses and residences, giving them to people for recreation and dwelling, making them feel comfortable and joyful in body and mind, then he will attract the Garden of Joy, becoming a place of amusement for gods and Asuras (non-gods), playing and enjoying happiness with various celestial maidens. If, during hot weather, he makes offerings of shade, he will experience the Udumbara (auspicious flower) and the Nigrodha tree (banyan tree), and later be born in the heavens, constantly enjoying the pleasures of the five senses. If he repairs wells, springs, and ponds, making them neat and clean, and helps those who are thirsty and lacking water, universally satisfying them, then after death he will be born in the heavens, or in the Brahmaloka (heaven of form), enjoying various pleasures, and ultimately attain the fruit of Nirvana. If he uses a Patra (bowl) to make offerings to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), he will be born in all places, wealthy and happy, noble and virtuous in that world. And he will attract all beings, who will constantly make offerings. If a wise person gives a knife, he will be born in the heavens, with extremely sharp and intelligent wisdom, and will never encounter the calamity of weapons. If someone gives a needle, his wisdom will be constantly sharp and keen, able to cut off all afflictions, and attain that path of tranquility. The Buddha said that if someone sculpts or paints a Buddha image, he will be born in the heavenly realms, his body appearing as true gold, his pure light like the sun, and all the heavenly beings, celestial males and females, will constantly take refuge in him. If that wise person is skilled in giving Dharma teachings, then he will be born in the heavens and among humans, complete with wisdom, virtue, and strength, constantly enjoying happiness, forever free from sorrow and suffering, and in his subsequent existence, he will attain the path of Nirvana. If those sentient beings write down the wonderful Dharma treasures, they will obtain knowledge of past lives (wisdom to recall previous lives), wealth, constant peace, and eliminate all sins, passing through Koti kalpas (extremely long units of time).

If those who are wise sweep and arrange the altar, walk around it, scatter fragrant flowers, and constantly make offerings, then after death they will be reborn in the human realm, or ascend to the heavens, forever enjoying wealth and ultimately attaining the state of Nirvana (Śūnyatā). If they offer a perpetual lamp to the Buddha (Buddha) and the virtuous saints, then they will be reborn in the human or heavenly realms, with their three eyes (physical eye, heavenly eye, wisdom eye) always pure. Moreover, those who give lamps are often able to be reborn in the heavens, and their speech will not be mute, nor will their ears and eyes be deaf or blind.
