The Method of Inviting Pindola
Translated by Śramaṇa Shi Huijian of the Song Dynasty
In India, there was a Upasaka (layman) king and elder. Whenever he held any gathering, he would always invite Pindola Bharadvaja (an Arhat, Pindola being his name and Bharadvaja his surname). Because he displayed his divine powers for the Elder Sudatta, the Buddha forbade him from entering Nirvana and ordered him to be a field of merit for the fourfold assembly (bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, and upasikas) in the Dharma-ending Age. When inviting him, one should burn incense and prostrate in a quiet place, facing Mount Malaya in India, sincerely calling his name, saying: 'Venerable Pindola Bharadvaja, having received the Buddha's command to be a field of merit for the people of the Dharma-ending Age, I beseech you to accept my invitation and dine here.' If newly building a house, one should also invite him, saying: 'I beseech you to accept my invitation and rest on this bed in this house.' If universally inviting the Sangha for bathing, one should also invite him, saying: 'I beseech you to accept my invitation and bathe here.' Before dawn, prepare fragrant soup, clean water, soap beans, willow branches, and fragrant oil, adjusting the temperature to be warm, according to the custom of bathing. Open the door and invite him in, then close the door. After a time as if a person had finished bathing, the Sangha may then enter. For all gatherings for dining and bathing, it is necessary to sincerely seek liberation by inviting the Sangha, without doubt or ignorance, with pure faith, and then one may invite him. In recent times, there was an elder who heard that Arhat Pindola had received the Buddha's command to be a field of merit for the people of the Dharma-ending Age. He then arranged a grand gathering according to the Dharma, sincerely inviting Pindola, and spread flowers under a rug to test him. After the assembly had finished eating, when the rug was lifted, all the flowers had withered. He was distressed and blamed himself, not knowing where the fault came from. He further exhausted himself, carefully questioning the sutra masters, and held another grand gathering. As before, the flowers withered again. He further exhausted all his family's wealth and held another grand gathering, but it was still the same as before. Distressed and blaming himself, he invited over a hundred Dharma masters to seek what was lost and repent for his transgressions. An elderly senior monk then publicly confessed his faults. The senior monk told him: 'You invited me to three gatherings, and I accepted all the invitations. You yourself'
【English Translation】 English version: 'He (Pindola, one of the Sixteen Arhats) made me enter through the servants' gate because I am old and my clothes are tattered, and they thought I was being banished. Fortunately, the Shramana Tissa (a monk) was unwilling to see me. Because of your request, I wanted to force my way in, and your servant struck me with a staff, breaking my head and injuring my right forehead. I came to the second assembly as well, but they still wouldn't let me in. I wanted to force my way in again, and I was struck on the head again, injuring the middle of my forehead. I came to the third assembly as well, and I was struck as before, injuring the left corner of my forehead. All of this you did yourself, so what is there to regret?' Having said this, he disappeared. The elder then realized it was Pindola. From then on, when people held feasts, they dared not prevent Pindola from entering again. If Pindola could be invited, the flowers he sat on would not wither. If new houses and beds were built, and they wanted to invite Pindola, they should sprinkle the ground with fragrant water, light fragrant oil lamps, and spread new beds and mattresses, covering the cotton with white silk. On the first night, invite him according to the ritual, and then close the door, being careful not to disrespectfully peek. Everyone should sincerely believe that he will surely come. As long as there is sincere resonance, there is no one who will not come. After he comes, there will be traces of lying down on the mattress, and traces of used hot water in the bathroom. When accepting invitations to large feasts, he may sit in the upper seat, or in the middle seat, or in the lower seat, appearing as a monk in any place, and people who want to find his special characteristics will ultimately not be able to find them. After he leaves, seeing that the flowers in the place where he sat have not withered, they will know that it was him. The Method of Inviting Pindola
