A Brief Account of the Main Ideas of the Middle Volume of the Great Expansive Buddha Flower Garland Sutra

Volume 1 (From the First Assembly at the Bodhi Field, Explaining Six Chapters of the Sutra, to Volume 5, Chapter 1: Wondrous Adornments of World Rulers)
The Buddha attains enlightenment. In the country of Magadha. Expounding the Dharma in the Bodhi field. Because of past lives of shared cultivation with the Buddha, he causes the assembly of the ocean of beings to gather.
Volume 2
Creatures of the animal realm, and devas of the upper realms. Within the ocean of the Tathagata's fruition, each attains and realizes liberation.
Volume 3
The Four Heavenly Kings (Four Heavenly Kings) and the Eight kinds of deities (Eight kinds of deities). Various kinds of spirits. All use wonderful words of request, singing praises of the inconceivable Dharma.
Volume 4
Myriad forms and colors, thousands of retinues. Each speaks of the gate of liberation, chanting verses in praise of the Tathagata's merits.
Volume 5
The Tathagata's inconceivable power. All the Bodhisattvas rise from their seats. Light flows through heaven and earth, descending as auspicious omens. The ocean assembly makes offerings to boundless Buddhas.
Volume 6 (Chapter 2: Appearance of the Tathagata)
The great assembly together recites and requests. The Tathagata manifests auspicious signs in response. Light and sound summon new beings from the ten directions who are connected by karmic affinity, gathering like clouds.
Volume 7 (Chapter 3: Samantabhadra's Samadhi; Chapter 4: World System Formation)
Samantabhadra (Samantabhadra) enters the Samadhi of the Treasury of Body. The Tathagata blesses him with his holy power. Rising from samadhi, he speaks of the ten ocean Dharma-gates. Expounding extensively on the formation of the world.
Volume 8
The wind wheel supports the great waters. The great ocean surges forth with lotuses. Arranging the Buddha-land seed-ocean and fragrant rivers. Superimposing worlds within the middle ocean.

The ten oceans rotate to the right. Connecting with each other in succession. Intertwining layer upon layer. Like a net of heavenly jewels.

The sea of Buddha-lands under his governance extends directly to the Cakravāla (wheel-enclosing mountains) Dharma-realm and so on. The adornment of the Lotus Treasury World is to encourage beings to together generate faith and joy in the Dharma.

Vairocana (the Illuminator), in past kalpas, was once Prince Majestic Light, who made offerings to as many Tathagatas as there are dust motes in ten Mount Sumerus, thereby obtaining the fruit-sea of Ten Lotus Treasury Worlds.
Volume 12 (Second Assembly in the Universal Light Hall, Speaking Six Chapters: Chapter 7, Buddha Names; Chapter 8, Four Noble Truths)
The Tathagata's names are many, to suit the different capacities of beings. The doctrine of the Four Noble Truths is established with different names according to the location, enabling each who hears the Dharma to attain enlightenment.

Ultimate fruition inevitably arises from initial faith. Therefore, the assembly reconvenes in the Dharma hall. Samantabhadra (普賢) receives the Buddha's command to propagate the Dharma, elaborating on the supreme functions of the Ten Samadhis (十定).
Volume 41
Explains the Samadhi (三昧) of Universally Abiding in Lands, along with the Ten Kinds of Adornments. Describes the unhindered spiritual powers of Bodhisattvas, revealing the inexhaustible merits of Samantabhadra (普賢).
Volume 42
Explains the arising and entering of the Samadhi of Differentiated Freedom, without other distinctions. The four mouths surge like waves, employing the Four Eloquences to expound the Dharma.

Explains the Samadhi of Unobstructed Great Wheel, whose supreme power pervades the Dharma Realm. Like the transformations of the King of the Heavenly Hosts, similar to the Equal Enlightenment (等覺) and sharing the Wonderful Enlightenment (妙覺).

The Appearance of the Tathagata. There are many methods of Dharma analogies. The ten bodies are contained and integrated. One principle is universally equal and thoroughly illuminating.
Volume 51
The eloquence of speech pours out the appearance of perfect sound. It responds to and clarifies the hidden flow of wisdom's water. It breaks open a tiny dust mote to reveal a great sutra. It dissects the ordinary mind to reveal the wisdom of a sage.
Volume 52
The realm of practice and the attainment of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (成等正覺). Turning the Dharmacakra (法輪) and Nirvana (涅槃). Approaching and seeing and hearing are not in vain. Forming the firm seed of indestructible Vajra.

The Tathagata (如來) did not leave Jeta Grove (逝多林), entering the Simhavijrmbhita Samadhi (師子頻申三昧). Bodhisattvas (菩薩) witnessed the divine transformations of the Dharma Realm, while Sravakas (聲聞) were all like the deaf and blind, knowing nothing.
Volume 61
Samantabhadra (普賢) is able to reveal the ten practices, and the Tathagata (如來) emits a ray of light from his white hair mark. Manjusri (文殊) follows behind, proceeding southwards, all displaying the virtuous results of the Samadhi gate.
Volume 62
The Great Sage (referring to the Buddha) advises Sudhana (善財童子) to seek good friends in the south, visiting Gunamegha (德云), Sagaramati (海云), and Supratisthita (善住), and the Dharma gate of good abiding taught by them, which is profound and immeasurable.
Volume 63

Volume 71 Shanti (Shanti) and Gopaka (Gopaka Deva) open the door of liberation for Sudhana (Sudhana). Each Dharma gate is profound and difficult to fathom, and they are interconnected, connecting the past and the present.
Volume 72 Vikashitakusuma (Vikashitakusuma) expounds the Dharma gate of liberation named 'Great Joy Light Wheel King'. The Night Goddesses (Night Goddesses) tell the ancient story of Anala (Anala) and the place of Dharma giving.
Volume 73 The Dharma Gate of Great Vows. Sudhana (Sudhana) personally witnessed the wonderful city. The father king met the Buddha, and the prince was spared punishment.

【English Translation】 English version: Written on the 18th day of the second month of the year Hai, this expresses the aspiration for this writing. The Avatamsaka Sutra (Hua Yan Jing) is the fundamental Dharma wheel (fundamental Buddhist teachings) of an era, directly revealing the inner realization of the Tathagata (Buddha). Relying on it, even a single hearing can lead to eternal liberation from the suffering of the cycle of birth and death. Layman Tongxuan is the patriarch of the Huayan school, and his explanation of the scriptures aligns with the Buddha's intention, hence the golden light emanating from his mouth. To say this and that, disbelief is not permissible. However, the main idea of the eighty-volume Avatamsaka Sutra is barely squeezed onto the paper in my hand. This is a subtle and essential art. I, Xian, reverently uphold it every day, disregarding the lightness and scarcity of the paper, and diligently write it with my clumsy brush. May the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) and the unseen beings, with compassion and mercy, accept my offering. Kuai Xian (age 47).
