【English Translation】 English version: Those who do not seek the teachings, are often entangled in a web of doubts regarding the Dharma. They may claim something is a precept when it is not, or violate a precept that is. Or they may say, 'I am a practitioner of Mahayana (Great Vehicle), I do not practice the teachings of Hinayana (Small Vehicle).' There are many like this, not just one or two. This means that internally they contradict the mind of a Bodhisattva (Enlightenment Being), and externally they lack the practice of a Shravaka (Disciple of the Buddha); their four conducts (walking, standing, sitting, and lying down) are not nourished by the Dharma, and they are called withered beings. Such people have existed continuously from ancient times to the present. If not for a Dharma master who understands the Dharma, who can discern them! At that time, there were some Buddhist students who were impetuous and restless, few who sought to practice, and many who sought only to understand the doctrines. They were extremely casual and lax regarding the rules of conduct. Without cultivating Samadhi (meditative absorption), they strayed far from the mind of true wisdom; without learning the various precepts of good conduct, it is difficult to achieve supreme practice. Therefore, the great virtuous ones of ancient and modern times are truly the good fields of the world. Pure karma is achieved through the rituals of the path, and purity is perfected through the precepts. Their spirit soars above the stars, their majesty awes the wind and clouds, their virtue is as heavy as mountains, and their fame flows through the rivers and seas; towering and outstanding, their learning is profound; vast and deep is their compassion, their kindness extends to all; they possess the virtue of a lion, and manifest the majesty of an elephant king; humans and gods praise and support them, and dragons and spirits revere and submit to them. It is truly because sentient beings have a response, that the world is not empty. Therefore, the flames of their virtue are connected and shining, their transmission is continuous, their noble conduct is firm and unwavering, and they are truly treasures of the Sangha (Buddhist community)! I am ashamed of myself as a lower being, and truly feel ashamed before the superior virtues. Based on the Buddhist scriptures, I have compiled these pure instructions, to present them to those who have not yet heard them. The purpose of the precepts is to have the aspiration to uphold and maintain them, thus enabling one to increase goodness in one's heart and make one's conduct outwardly admirable. All the conditions for various practices are recorded below, to illuminate new learning, and a preface is written. There are a total of 465 articles on the characteristics of conduct, which are explained in detail below. Entering the Temple - Chapter One (Eleven Articles) 1. When arriving outside the temple gate, one must have proper deportment. 2. After entering the temple gate, bow in reverence, then kneel and recite the usual praises of the Buddha. 3. Put away the sitting cloth, bring your palms together, bow slightly, then compose yourself, walk slowly along one side of the corridor, looking straight ahead. 4. Do not let your hands hang down; you should have a sense of reverence. 5. Do not step on the shadows of the halls and pagodas. 6. When encountering a senior monk, do not bow in front of the hall. 7. If entering a hall or pagoda, one should bring one's palms together and circumambulate from the right.
