勸一切眾生。愿生西方極樂世界阿彌陀佛國。六時禮讚偈。

謹依大經及龍樹天親。此土沙門等所造往生禮讚。集在一處分作六時。唯欲相續繫心助成往益。亦愿曉悟未聞。遠沾遐代耳。何者。第一謹依大經釋迦及十方諸佛讚歎彌陀十二光名。勸稱禮念定生彼國。十九拜當日沒時禮。第二謹依大經採集要文。以為禮讚偈。二十四拜當初夜時禮。第三謹依龍樹菩薩愿往生禮讚偈。十六拜當中夜時禮。第四謹依天親菩薩愿往生禮讚偈。二十拜當后夜時禮。第五謹依彥琮法師愿往生禮讚偈。二十一拜當晨朝時禮。第六沙門善導愿往生禮讚偈。謹依十六觀作。二十拜當午時禮。

問曰。今欲勸人往生者。未知若為安心起行作業。定得往生彼國土也。答曰。必欲生彼國土者。如觀經說者。具三心必得往生。何等為三。一者至誠心。所謂身業禮拜彼佛。口業讚歎稱揚彼佛。意業專念觀察彼佛。凡起三業。必須真實。故名至誠心。二者深心。即是真實信心。信知自身是具足煩惱凡夫。善根薄少。流轉三界。不出火宅。今信知彌陀本弘誓願。及稱名號。下至十聲一聲等。定得往生。

Advising all sentient beings to aspire to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Amitabha (Amitabha, transliteration, meaning immeasurable light or immeasurable life) Buddha's country. Six periods of praise gatha.

Respectfully based on the Great Sutra and Nagarjuna (Nagarjuna, founder of the Madhyamaka school of Mahayana Buddhism), Vasubandhu (Vasubandhu, also known as Sechin, one of the founders of the Yogacara school). The rebirth praise gatha composed by the Shamen of this land, etc., is collected in one place and divided into six periods. Only desiring to continuously focus the mind to assist in achieving rebirth benefits. Also hoping to enlighten those who have not heard, and to benefit future generations. What are they? First, respectfully based on the Great Sutra, Sakyamuni (Sakyamuni Buddha) and the Buddhas of the ten directions praise Amitabha's twelve light names. Encouraging recitation and reverence, one will surely be reborn in that country. Nineteen prostrations are performed at sunset. Second, respectfully based on the Great Sutra, essential passages are collected to form the praise gatha. Twenty-four prostrations are performed at the beginning of the night. Third, respectfully based on Nagarjuna Bodhisattva's aspiration for rebirth praise gatha. Sixteen prostrations are performed in the middle of the night. Fourth, respectfully based on Vasubandhu Bodhisattva's aspiration for rebirth praise gatha. Twenty prostrations are performed in the later part of the night. Fifth, respectfully based on Dharma Master Yancong's (Yancong, a Tang Dynasty monk) aspiration for rebirth praise gatha. Twenty-one prostrations are performed in the morning. Sixth, Shamen Shandao's aspiration for rebirth praise gatha. Respectfully based on the Sixteen Contemplations. Twenty prostrations are performed at noon.

Question: Now, wanting to encourage people to be reborn, I do not know how to pacify the mind, initiate practice, and perform actions to ensure rebirth in that country. Answer: If one truly desires to be born in that country, as the Contemplation Sutra says, possessing three minds will certainly lead to rebirth. What are the three? First, the sincere mind. That is, the body performs reverence to that Buddha, the mouth praises and extols that Buddha, and the mind single-mindedly contemplates that Buddha. All three actions must be genuine, hence the name 'sincere mind.' Second, the profound mind. This is true faith. Believing that oneself is an ordinary being full of afflictions, with meager roots of goodness, transmigrating through the three realms, unable to escape the burning house. Now believing in Amitabha's original vows and reciting his name, even down to ten recitations or one recitation, one will certainly be reborn.


乃至一念無有疑心。故名深心。三者回向發願心。所作一切善根悉皆回愿往生。故名迴向發願心。具此三心必得生也。若少一心即不得生。如觀經具說。應知。

又如天親凈土論云。若有愿生彼國者。勸修五念門。五門若具定得往生。何者為五。一者身業禮拜門。所謂一心專至恭敬合掌。香華供養。禮拜阿彌陀佛。禮即專禮彼佛。畢命為期。不雜余禮。故名禮拜門。二者口業讚歎門。所謂專意讚歎彼佛身相光明。一切聖眾身相光明。及彼國中一切寶莊嚴光明等。故名讚歎門。三者意業憶念觀察門。所謂專意念觀彼佛。及一切聖眾身相光明。國土莊嚴等。如觀經說。唯除睡時。恒憶恒念恒想恒觀此事等。故名觀察門。四者作愿門。所謂專心。若晝若夜。一切時一切處。三業四威儀所作功德。不問初中后。皆須真實心中發願愿生彼國。故名作愿門。五者回向門。所謂專心。若自作善根。及一切三乘五道一一聖凡等所作善根。深生隨喜。如諸佛菩薩所作隨喜。我亦如是隨喜。以此隨喜善根及己所作善根。皆悉與眾生共之迴向彼國。故名迴向門。又到彼國已。得六神通。回入生死。教化眾生。徹窮后際。心無厭足。乃至成佛。亦名迴向門。五門既具定得往生。一一門與上三心合。隨起業行。不問多少。皆名真實業也。應

【English Translation】 English version: Even a single thought without any doubt is called 'Deep Mind'. The third is the Mind of Dedication and Aspiration, dedicating all the good roots one has cultivated to the aspiration of being reborn in the Pure Land, hence it is called 'Mind of Dedication and Aspiration'. Possessing these three minds ensures rebirth. Lacking even one of these minds prevents rebirth, as detailed in the Contemplation Sutra (Visualization Sutra), which should be understood.

Furthermore, as Vasubandhu (Tianqin) states in the Treatise on the Pure Land (Rebirth Treatise): 'If there are those who aspire to be born in that land, I advise them to cultivate the Five Gates of Mindfulness.' If the Five Gates are complete, rebirth is assured. What are the Five? First is the Gate of Bodily Adoration, which means wholeheartedly, with utmost sincerity and reverence, joining palms in respect, offering incense and flowers, and prostrating to Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha). Prostration means exclusively prostrating to that Buddha, with a lifelong commitment, without mixing in other prostrations, hence it is called the 'Gate of Adoration'. Second is the Gate of Verbal Praise, which means wholeheartedly praising the physical form and light of that Buddha, as well as the physical forms and light of all the holy beings, and the light of all the precious adornments in that land, hence it is called the 'Gate of Praise'. Third is the Gate of Mental Recollection and Observation, which means wholeheartedly recollecting and observing that Buddha, as well as the physical forms and light of all the holy beings, and the adornments of the land, as described in the Contemplation Sutra, except during sleep, constantly recollecting, constantly thinking, constantly imagining, constantly observing these things, hence it is called the 'Gate of Observation'. Fourth is the Gate of Making Vows, which means wholeheartedly, whether day or night, at all times and in all places, the merits performed by the three karmas (body, speech, and mind) and the four dignities (walking, standing, sitting, and lying down), whether at the beginning, middle, or end, must be with a true heart making the vow to be born in that land, hence it is called the 'Gate of Making Vows'. Fifth is the Gate of Dedication, which means wholeheartedly, whether it is one's own good roots, or the good roots performed by every saint and ordinary being in the Three Vehicles (Śrāvakayāna, Pratyekabuddhayāna, Bodhisattvayāna) and the Five Paths (hell, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, and devas), deeply rejoicing in them, just as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas rejoice, so do I rejoice. With this merit of rejoicing and the good roots I have cultivated, all are shared with sentient beings and dedicated to that land, hence it is called the 'Gate of Dedication'. Moreover, after arriving in that land, one obtains the six supernormal powers and returns to the cycle of birth and death to teach sentient beings, until the end of time, without weariness in the heart, and even until becoming a Buddha, this is also called the 'Gate of Dedication'. Since the Five Gates are complete, rebirth is assured, and each gate corresponds to the above three minds, and whatever actions are performed, whether few or many, are called true actions. It should be known.

又如文殊般若云。明一行三昧。唯勸。獨處空閑。舍諸亂意。繫心一佛。不觀相貌。專稱名字。即于念中。得見彼阿彌陀佛及一切佛等。問曰。何故不令作觀。直遣專稱名字者。有何意也。答曰。乃由眾生障重。境細心粗。識飏神飛。觀難成就也。是以大聖悲憐。直勸專稱名字。正由稱名易故相續即生。問曰。既遣專稱一佛。何故境現即多。此豈非

Know these things.

Furthermore, it encourages the practice of the Four Modes of Cultivation, using them to motivate the Three Minds and the Five Recollections, to quickly achieve rebirth [in Sukhavati]. What are the four? First is Reverential Cultivation, which means reverently bowing to that Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and all his holy assembly, etc. Therefore, it is called Reverential Cultivation. Taking the end of life as the limit, vowing not to stop, this is Long-term Cultivation. Second is Exclusive Cultivation, which means exclusively reciting that Buddha's name, exclusively recollecting, exclusively visualizing, exclusively bowing to, and exclusively praising that Buddha and all the holy assembly, etc., without mixing in other activities. Therefore, it is called Exclusive Cultivation. Taking the end of life as the limit, vowing not to stop, this is Long-term Cultivation. Third is Uninterrupted Cultivation, which means continuously and reverently bowing, reciting the name, praising, recollecting, contemplating, dedicating merit, and making vows, with the mind continuously flowing without interruption by other activities. Therefore, it is called Uninterrupted Cultivation. Also, it is not interrupted by greed, anger, and afflictions, repenting whenever offenses occur, not allowing it to be separated by a thought, a time, or a day, always maintaining purity. This is also called Uninterrupted Cultivation. Taking the end of life as the limit, vowing not to stop, this is Long-term Cultivation. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas have already escaped the cycle of birth and death, and the good deeds they perform are dedicated to seeking Buddhahood, which is self-benefit. Teaching and transforming sentient beings until the endless future is benefiting others. However, present-day sentient beings are all bound by afflictions, unable to escape the suffering of evil realms and the cycle of birth and death. Following conditions, they initiate practice, and all good roots are quickly dedicated, wishing to be reborn in the land of Amitabha Buddha. After arriving in that land, there is nothing to fear. The above-mentioned Four Modes of Cultivation naturally and effortlessly proceed, and self-benefit and benefiting others are both fully present. This should be known.

Moreover, as the Manjushri Prajna Sutra says, it elucidates the Eka-vyūha-samādhi (Samadhi of One Practice), only encouraging one to dwell alone in a quiet place, abandoning all scattered thoughts, focusing the mind on one Buddha, not contemplating the Buddha's form, but exclusively reciting the Buddha's name. Within the recitation, one can see Amitabha Buddha and all Buddhas, etc. Question: Why not have people practice visualization, but directly have them exclusively recite the name? What is the intention? Answer: This is because sentient beings have heavy karmic obstacles, the objects of contemplation are subtle, the mind is coarse, and the spirit is scattered and flighty, making visualization difficult to achieve. Therefore, the Great Sage compassionately directly encourages exclusive recitation of the name, precisely because reciting the name is easy, so continuity arises immediately. Question: Since one is told to exclusively recite one Buddha, why do many Buddhas appear when the realm manifests? Isn't this


邪正相交一多雜現也。答曰。佛佛齊證。形無二別。縱使念一見多。乖何大道理也。

又如觀經云。佛勸坐觀禮念等。皆須面向西方者最勝。如樹先傾倒必隨曲。故必有事礙。不及向西方。但作向西想亦得。問曰。一切諸佛三身同證。悲智果圓。亦應無二。隨方禮念。課稱一佛。亦應得生。何故偏嘆西方。勸專禮念等。有何義也。答曰。諸佛所證平等是一。若以願行來收。非無因緣。然彌陀世尊本發深重誓願。以光明名號攝化十方。但使信心求念。上盡一形下至十聲一聲等。以佛願力易得往生。是故釋迦及以諸佛勸向西方。為別異耳。亦非是稱念余佛不能除障滅罪也。應知。

若能如上唸唸相續。畢命為期者。十即十生。百即百生。何以故。無外雜緣得正念故。與佛本願得相應故。不違教故。隨順佛語故。若欲舍專修雜業者。百時希得一二。千時希得三五。何以故。乃由雜緣亂動失正念故。與佛本願不相應故。與教相違故。不順佛語故。繫念不相續故。憶想間斷故。回愿不殷重真實故。貪瞋諸見煩惱來間斷故。無有慚愧懺悔心故。懺悔有三品。一要二略三廣。如下具說。隨意用皆得。又不相續念報彼佛恩故。心生輕慢。雖作業行。常與名利相應故。人我自覆。不親近同行善知識故。樂近雜緣。自障障他往

如果能夠像上面所說的那樣唸唸相續,以畢生為期限,那麼十個人唸佛就能有十個人往生,一百個人唸佛就能有一百個人往生。為什麼呢?因為沒有外來的雜亂因緣,能夠得到正念的緣故;與佛的本願能夠相應的緣故;不違背佛教導的緣故;隨順佛所說的話的緣故。如果想要捨棄專修,而修習各種雜業,那麼一百個人中很少能有一兩個人往生,一千個人中很少能有三五個人往生。為什麼呢?這是由於雜亂的因緣擾亂和動搖,失去了正念的緣故;與佛的本願不相應的緣故;與佛教導相違背的緣故;不順從佛所說的話的緣故;繫念不相續的緣故;憶念和想像時斷時續的緣故;迴向的願望不夠懇切和真實的緣故;貪婪、嗔恨等各種見解和煩惱來干擾和阻斷的緣故;沒有慚愧和懺悔之心的緣故。懺悔有三種品級,一是精要的,二是簡略的,三是廣博的,下面會詳細說明,可以隨意選用。又不相續地念佛來報答佛的恩德的緣故;心中產生輕慢的緣故;雖然做修行,卻常常與名利相應合的緣故;人我和自我的遮蔽的緣故;不親近同行善知識的緣故;喜歡親近雜亂的因緣,自己障礙自己,也障礙他人往生的緣故。

【English Translation】 English version: Heretical and correct views intermingle, with singularity and multiplicity appearing simultaneously. The answer is: All Buddhas attain the same realization, with no difference in essence. Even if you recite one Buddha but see many, what great principle does this violate?

Furthermore, as the Contemplation Sutra (Guan Jing) states, the Buddha advises people to sit in meditation, contemplate, prostrate, and recite, all while facing the West, as this is the most auspicious. Just as a tree that leans first will inevitably fall in the direction of its bend, if there are indeed obstacles preventing one from facing West, it is acceptable to simply contemplate the West in one's mind. Someone asks: All Buddhas attain the same Three Bodies (Trikaya), and their compassion and wisdom are complete, so there should be no difference. Regardless of which direction one prostrates and recites, as long as one chants the name of a Buddha, one should be able to be reborn in the Pure Land. Why then is the West particularly praised, and why are people encouraged to focus on prostrations and recitations towards it? What is the meaning of this? The answer is: The realization attained by all Buddhas is equally the same. However, if we consider it from the perspective of vows and practices, there are indeed causes and conditions. Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha) originally made profound vows to gather and transform sentient beings in the ten directions with his light and name. As long as one has faith and seeks to recite, whether it be for an entire lifetime or just ten or even one recitation, one can easily attain rebirth through the power of the Buddha's vows. Therefore, Shakyamuni (Sakyamuni) and all the Buddhas encourage people to face West, to make a distinction. It is not to say that reciting the names of other Buddhas cannot eliminate karmic obstacles and sins. One should understand this.

If one can maintain continuous recitation as described above, with one's entire life as the limit, then ten who recite will be reborn, and a hundred who recite will be reborn. Why is this so? Because there are no external, distracting conditions, and one can attain right mindfulness; because one is in accordance with the original vows of the Buddha; because one does not violate the teachings of the Buddha; because one follows the words of the Buddha. If one wishes to abandon focused practice and engage in various miscellaneous practices, then only one or two out of a hundred may be reborn, and only three to five out of a thousand may be reborn. Why is this so? This is because miscellaneous conditions disturb and agitate, causing one to lose right mindfulness; because one is not in accordance with the original vows of the Buddha; because one is in contradiction with the teachings of the Buddha; because one does not follow the words of the Buddha; because one's mindfulness is not continuous; because one's recollections and thoughts are intermittent; because one's dedication of merit is not earnest and sincere; because greed, hatred, and various views and afflictions come to interfere and obstruct; because one has no sense of shame or repentance. Repentance has three levels: essential, concise, and extensive, which will be explained in detail below, and one can choose any of them. Furthermore, one does not continuously recite to repay the Buddha's kindness; because one generates arrogance in one's mind; because although one performs practices, they are always associated with fame and gain; because one is covered by ego and self; because one does not associate with virtuous spiritual friends; because one enjoys associating with miscellaneous conditions, obstructing oneself and others from rebirth.


生正行故。何以故余比日自見聞諸方道俗。解行不同。專雜有異。但使專意作者。十即十生。修雜不至心者。千中無一。此二行得失如前已辨。仰愿一切往生人等。善自思量。已能今身愿生彼國者。行住坐臥必須勵心克己。晝夜莫廢。畢命為期。上在一形似如少苦。前念命終后念即生彼國。長時永劫常受無為法樂。乃至成佛不經生死。豈非快哉。應知。

Recently, I have personally seen and heard that monks and laypeople in various places have different understandings and practices, with distinctions between focused and mixed practices. If one practices with focused dedication, ten out of ten will be reborn [in the Pure Land]; if one's practice is mixed and not sincere, not even one in a thousand will be reborn. The gains and losses of these two types of practice have been clearly explained earlier. I hope that all those who wish to be reborn [in the Pure Land] will carefully consider this. Those who are already able to vow in this life to be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss must strive to restrain themselves in all their activities—walking, standing, sitting, and lying down—day and night without ceasing, taking their entire life as the limit. Enduring what seems like a little suffering in this one lifetime, one will be reborn in that land in the next thought after the end of this life, eternally enjoying the bliss of the unconditioned Dharma for a long time, even becoming a Buddha without experiencing birth and death. Isn't that wonderful? You should know: First, carefully follow the content of the 'Great Sutra' where Sakyamuni Buddha (Sakyamuni Buddha) encourages the praise of Amitabha Buddha's (Amitabha) twelve lights, seeking rebirth. Perform nineteen prostrations, worshipping at sunset, or choosing a medium or lower-grade repentance is also acceptable. Namo Sakyamuni Buddha (Sakyamuni Buddha) and all the Three Jewels (Three Jewels). I now bow in reverence, dedicating the merit to be reborn in the Land of Immeasurable Life (Land of Immeasurable Life). 【English Translation】 English version: The Amitabha Sutra and the Contemplation Sutra say: 'That Buddha (referring to Amitābha Buddha) has immeasurable light, illuminating the ten directions, without any obstruction, only gathering and never abandoning sentient beings who contemplate and recite the Buddha's name, therefore he is named Amitābha (meaning immeasurable light, immeasurable life). That Buddha's lifespan and the people of his land are immeasurable and boundless asaṃkhya kalpas (an extremely long unit of time), therefore he is named Amitābha.' Moreover, Śākyamuni Buddha and the Buddhas of the ten directions praise Amitābha Buddha's light with twelve names, universally exhorting sentient beings to recite the Buddha's name and prostrate to the Buddha's image continuously. Those who do so can obtain immeasurable merit in this life, and after death, they will surely be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. As the Infinite Life Sutra says: 'If there are sentient beings who encounter this light, the three poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion will be extinguished, their bodies and minds will become soft, they will rejoice and leap for joy, and virtuous thoughts will arise. If in the three evil realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals, they see this light, they will have no suffering or affliction, and after their lives end, they will all be liberated.' The light of Amitāyus Buddha is brilliant, illuminating the ten directions, and there is no Buddha land that has not heard of it. It is not only I who now praise his light, but all Buddhas, Śrāvakas (disciples who practice by hearing the Buddha's teachings), Pratyekabuddhas (practitioners who attain enlightenment through their own efforts), and all Bodhisattvas also praise and extol him in the same way. If there are sentient beings who hear of Amitābha Buddha's light, power, and merit, and recite and speak of it day and night with sincerity and without interruption, according to their wishes, they can be reborn in Amitābha Buddha's land, and they will always be praised by the Bodhisattvas and Śrāvakas, who extol his merits. The Buddha said: 'I say that the light and power of Amitāyus Buddha are majestic, sublime, and wonderful, and even if I were to speak of them for a kalpa day and night, I could not exhaust them.' Tell all practitioners, you should know that the light of Amitābha Buddha's form, even if Śākyamuni Tathagata were to speak of it for a kalpa, he could not exhaust it. As the Contemplation Sutra says: 'Each and every light illuminates the ten directions, gathering and never abandoning sentient beings who recite the Buddha's name.' Now that the Contemplation Sutra has such an inconceivable, increasing, and supreme condition to gather and protect practitioners, why not continuously recite, contemplate, prostrate, and remember, and vow to be reborn? 禮拜懺悔的諸種功德,愿在臨命終時,得見無量壽佛,那無邊功德之身。我和其他信徒,既然已經見到阿彌陀佛,愿能得到清凈無垢的眼,往生到安樂的極樂國土,成就無上菩提。

禮拜懺悔完畢,一切恭敬。

歸依佛,證得菩提,道心恒常不退轉。

愿與一切眾生共同迴向發願,往生無量壽佛國。

歸依法,證得一切智慧,獲得廣大的總持法門。

愿與一切眾生共同迴向發願,往生無量壽佛國。

歸依僧,止息爭論,共同進入和合的海會。

愿與一切眾生共同迴向發願,往生無量壽佛國。

愿一切眾生,身口意三業清凈,奉持佛教,和睦相處。

【English Translation】 English version Amitabha (Amitabha, transliteration, meaning immeasurable light Buddha or immeasurable life Buddha) emits great light, illuminating the body of the practitioner, and together with countless manifested Buddhas, Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, beings who aspire to enlightenment), Śrāvakas (Śrāvaka, disciples who attain liberation by hearing the Buddha's teachings), and the great assembly, simultaneously extend their hands to receive them. In an instant, the practitioner can be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. To repay the Buddha's kindness, sincerely bow once.

Namo (Namo, taking refuge) to the pure great assembly of Bodhisattvas in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

May I and all sentient beings together take refuge, therefore I prostrate and bow, wishing to be reborn in that Buddha-land.

(These Bodhisattvas also follow the Buddha to welcome the practitioner. To repay their kindness, sincerely bow once.)

Universally for teachers, monks, parents, and virtuous friends, as well as all sentient beings in the Dharma realm, may we cut off the three obstacles of body, speech, and mind, and together be reborn in the Buddha-land of Amitabha, taking refuge and repenting.

Sincerely repent.

Namo to the Buddhas of repentance in the ten directions, may we eradicate the roots of all sins; now I dedicate the merits of past and present virtuous deeds, turning them into the cause of happiness for myself and others; may all sentient beings, at the time of death, have auspicious conditions and wonderful realms appear before them; may we behold Amitabha, the compassionate lord, as well as Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) and Mahāsthāmaprāpta (Dashizhi) and the Buddhas of the ten directions. Hoping that the divine light will shine upon us and we will be received by the Buddha's hand, riding on Amitabha's original vow to be reborn in that Buddha-land.

Having completed repentance, dedication, and aspiration, sincerely take refuge in Amitabha Buddha.

Next, chant the Sanskrit verses.

Recite the verse of aspiration.

The merits of prostrations and repentance, may I, at the time of death, see Amitabha Buddha, the body of immeasurable merit. I and other believers, having seen Amitabha, may we obtain pure and undefiled eyes, and be reborn in the peaceful and blissful land, attaining supreme Bodhi.

Having completed prostrations and repentance, with utmost reverence.

Taking refuge in the Buddha, attaining Bodhi, the aspiration for enlightenment never retreats.

May I and all sentient beings dedicate the merits and aspire to be reborn in the Buddha-land of Immeasurable Life.

Taking refuge in the Dharma, attaining all wisdom, obtaining the great Dharani gate.

May I and all sentient beings dedicate the merits and aspire to be reborn in the Buddha-land of Immeasurable Life.

Taking refuge in the Sangha, ceasing disputes, together entering the harmonious ocean.

May I and all sentient beings dedicate the merits and aspire to be reborn in the Buddha-land of Immeasurable Life.

May all sentient beings purify their three karmas of body, speech, and mind, uphold the Buddha's teachings, and live in harmony.


南一切賢聖。愿共諸眾生。回愿往生無量壽國。

諸眾等聽說日沒無常偈。

人間匆匆營眾務  不覺年命日夜去  如燈風中滅難期  忙忙六道無定趣  未得解脫出苦海  云何安然不驚懼  各聞強健有力時  自策自勵求常住

說此偈已更當心口發願。

愿弟子等臨命終時。心不顛倒。心不錯亂。心不失念。身心無諸苦痛。身心快樂如入禪定。聖眾現前。乘佛本願。上品往生阿彌陀佛國。到彼國已。得六神通。入十方界。救攝苦眾生。虛空法界盡。我願亦如是。發願已。至心歸命阿彌陀佛。

初夜偈云。

煩惱深無底  生死海無邊  度苦船未立  云何樂睡眠  勇猛勤精進  攝心常在禪

中夜偈云。

汝等勿抱臭尸臥  種種不凈假名人  如得重病箭入體  眾苦痛集安可眠

后夜偈云。

時光遷流轉  忽至五更初  無常唸唸至  恒與死王居  勸諸行道者  勤修至無餘

平旦偈云。

欲求寂滅樂  當學沙門法  衣食支身命  精粗隨眾得

諸眾等今日晨朝各誦六念。

日中偈云。

人生不精進  喻若樹無根  采華置日中  能得幾時鮮  人命亦如是  無常須臾間  勸諸行道眾  勤

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 南無一切賢聖(對一切賢聖的皈依)。愿與所有眾生共同發願,往生到無量壽國(西方極樂世界)。

諸位請聽我說這首關於日落無常的偈子:

人間匆匆忙忙地經營各種事務,不知不覺中,年歲和壽命日夜流逝。生命就像風中之燈,熄滅難以預料。眾生在六道中忙碌奔波,沒有固定的歸宿。如果還沒有得到解脫,脫離苦海,怎麼能安然不驚懼呢?大家應當趁著身強力壯的時候,自我鞭策,自我勉勵,尋求永恒的歸宿。

說完這首偈子后,更應當從內心和口中發出誓願:

愿弟子等臨命終時,心不顛倒,心不錯亂,心不失念,身心沒有各種苦痛,身心快樂如同進入禪定。聖眾顯現在眼前,憑藉阿彌陀佛的本願,上品往生到阿彌陀佛國。到達彼國后,得到六神通,進入十方世界,救度攝受受苦的眾生。愿虛空法界沒有窮盡,我的誓願也如此。發願完畢后,至誠歸命阿彌陀佛。

初夜偈說:

煩惱深不見底,生死之海沒有邊際。度過苦難的船隻還沒有建立,怎麼能安然入睡呢?應當勇猛精進,收攝身心,常在禪定之中。

中夜偈說:

你們不要抱著這具充滿臭氣的屍體睡覺,這具身體只是種種不凈之物的虛假組合。如同身中重病,被箭射中,各種痛苦聚集在一起,怎麼能安然入睡呢?

后夜偈說:

時光迅速流逝,轉眼就到了五更時分。無常唸唸逼近,我們始終與死神為鄰。勸勉各位修行人,勤奮修行,直至圓滿。

平旦偈說:

想要尋求寂滅的快樂,應當學習沙門的修行方法。用衣服和食物來維持生命,粗細好壞都隨大眾所得。

各位,今天早晨各自誦唸六念(唸佛、念法、念僧、念戒、念施、念天)。

日中偈說:

人生如果不精進修行,就像沒有根的樹木。採摘的花朵放在太陽下,能保持多久的鮮艷呢?人的生命也是如此,無常就在須臾之間。勸勉各位修行人,勤奮修行。

【English Translation】 English version: Namo all the wise and holy ones (Homage to all the wise and holy ones). May we, together with all sentient beings, vow to be reborn in the Land of Immeasurable Life (the Western Pure Land).

All of you, please listen to this verse about the impermanence of sunset:

In the human realm, we busily manage various affairs, unknowingly as years and lifespan pass day and night. Life is like a lamp in the wind, its extinguishing is unpredictable. Sentient beings rush about in the six realms, with no fixed destination. If we have not yet attained liberation, escaping the sea of suffering, how can we be at peace and without fear? Everyone should, while strong and capable, urge and encourage themselves to seek a permanent abode.

After reciting this verse, one should further make a vow from the heart and mouth:

May we, disciples, when approaching the end of life, have minds that are not inverted, minds that are not confused, minds that do not lose mindfulness, bodies and minds without various sufferings, bodies and minds joyful as if entering samadhi. May the holy assembly appear before us, and by the original vow of Amitabha Buddha, may we be reborn in the highest grade in the Land of Amitabha Buddha. Having arrived in that land, may we attain the six supernormal powers, enter the ten directions, and rescue and gather suffering sentient beings. May the Dharma realm of empty space be endless, and may my vows be likewise. Having made the vow, with utmost sincerity, we take refuge in Amitabha Buddha.

The first night verse says:

Afflictions are deep and bottomless, the sea of birth and death is boundless. The boat to cross over suffering has not yet been built, how can one sleep peacefully? One should be courageous and diligent, gather the mind, and always be in meditation.

The middle night verse says:

You should not lie embracing this stinking corpse, this body is merely a false combination of various impure things. Like being seriously ill, shot by an arrow, with various sufferings gathered together, how can one sleep peacefully?

The last night verse says:

Time flows swiftly, and in the blink of an eye, it is the early hours of the morning. Impermanence approaches with every thought, we are always dwelling with the King of Death. I urge all practitioners to diligently cultivate until perfection.

The dawn verse says:

If you wish to seek the joy of nirvana, you should learn the practice of the Shramanas (monastics). Use clothing and food to sustain life, coarse or fine, as obtained from the community.

Everyone, this morning, each recite the six recollections (recollection of the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, the precepts, generosity, and the heavens).

The midday verse says:

If a person does not cultivate diligently, it is like a tree without roots. Plucked flowers placed in the sun, how long can they remain fresh? Human life is also like this, impermanence is in an instant. I urge all practitioners to cultivate diligently.

第二沙門善導謹依大經採集要文。以為禮讚偈二十四拜當初夜時禮。懺悔同前後。

The second Shramana Shandao (Shandao), respectfully based on the 'Larger Sutra', collected important passages to create the verses of praise, making twenty-four prostrations during the initial night worship. The repentance ritual is the same as before and after.

Namo, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) of the Western Pure Land.

Amitabha's wisdom and vows are as deep and vast as the ocean, without limit. Those who hear his name and desire to be reborn there will all reach that land. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Land of Bliss).

Namo, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) of the Western Pure Land.

In this world, there are sixty-seven billion non-retreating Bodhisattvas. They will all be able to be reborn in that land. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Land of Bliss).

Namo, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) of the Western Pure Land.

Bodhisattvas who practice the Small Vehicle, and those who cultivate little merit. Their number is countless, and they will all be able to be reborn in that land. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Land of Bliss).

Namo, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) of the Western Pure Land.

Bodhisattvas and Bhikshus from the Buddha lands of the ten directions. They are countless even if one exhausts kalpas, and they will all be able to be reborn in that land. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Land of Bliss).

Namo, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) of the Western Pure Land.

All the Bodhisattvas, each carrying heavenly wonderful flowers. Precious incense and priceless garments, offering to Amitabha Buddha. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Land of Bliss).

Namo, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) of the Western Pure Land.

Together they play heavenly music, emitting harmonious and elegant sounds. Singing praises to the most supreme Buddha, offering to Amitabha Buddha. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Land of Bliss).

Namo, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) of the Western Pure Land.

The sunlight of wisdom illuminates the world, eliminating the clouds of birth and death. Respectfully circumambulating three times, bowing in reverence to Amitabha Buddha. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Land of Bliss).

The light returns and encircles his body, going around three times and entering from the crown of his head. All the gods and humans leap for joy. Serving billions of Tathagatas, transforming and flying throughout all the lands, respectfully and joyfully departing, and returning to the Land of Peace and Nourishment. If a person has no roots of goodness, they cannot hear the Buddha's name. Arrogant, mean, and lazy, it is difficult to believe in this Dharma. Fifth, respectfully following the verses of praise for rebirth by Dharma Master Yancong, twenty-one prostrations should be performed when rising in the morning (repentance is the same before and after).

Lotuses bloom, displaying rare colors, waves ripple, proclaiming the sound of true reality. When will I be able to receive the Buddha's hand of guidance, fulfilling my wish to be reborn in the West? It is difficult to return in the defiled world, the wish to be reborn in the Pure Land is even deeper. Golden ropes directly define the path, pearl nets gently hang as forests. What is seen is all true color, what is heard is all Dharma sound. Do not think the West is far away, only the ten thoughts of mindfulness are needed. The light from the five mountains shines alone, the mudra (gesture) of the precious hand (ratna-hasta, Buddha's hand) is always distinct. The earth and water both become mirrors, incense and flowers together transform into clouds. Deep karma makes it easy to be reborn, shallow causes make it truly difficult to hear. One must hope to eliminate doubts, transcend the ordinary, and be unique. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhāvatī, the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss).

Unconditioned compassion can embrace all things, things with form are certainly not difficult. The lotus flower changes with the original mind, the palace moves and the body is naturally at peace. Hoping to hear of the transcendent realm, one must enter meditation together to see. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhāvatī, the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss).

Opening flowers re-covers the water, the fine net meticulously divides the sky. Why is the vow to be reborn so earnest? Precisely because there is endless joy in the Land of Bliss. Fragrant food arrives as you wish, the precious palace flies with your body. Those with affinity can all enter, but few actually go. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhāvatī, the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss).

Golden sand thoroughly illuminates the water, jade leaves fill the branches, shining brightly. The birds originally come from within pearls, people are only born on lotuses. I dare to request the Western Sage (ārya, referring to Amitābha Buddha), to surely come and greet us sooner or later. Especially seeking lands with affinity to the Buddha, hoping to be free from evil early. There, there is wish-fulfilling water with eight merits, and naturally growing seven-jeweled lotuses. If the mind can be focused there, one will surely be reborn, without delay. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhavati).

Namo, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land.

The Pure Land has no decay or change; once established, it remains so from ancient times to the present. The radiant terraces are composed of countless treasures, and the beautiful music is spread by the eight winds. The ponds are filled with birds that preach the Dharma, and the sky is filled with scattering celestial beings. Being reborn there, one need not fear regression, and can freely open the lotus. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhavati).

There is not just one Buddha image sitting on the lotus, and the number of the holy assembly is also immeasurable. When the lotus opens, each person dwells alone within it; when the waves arise, the Dharma is naturally proclaimed. Because one is in a pure place, there are no disasters; because there are good companions, there is no regression. Ask those who were reborn there in previous lives, how many kalpas (aeons) have they been here? May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhavati).

The Buddha's light extends to save Vaisali (an ancient Indian city), establishing in the sky and guiding Vaidehi (a queen during the Buddha's time). Celestial beings come, offering incense and flower canopies; those who are reborn depart, carrying precious garments. Six times a day, one hears the harmonious songs of birds; the four-inch lotuses are gently stepped upon. Looking at each other, there is nothing but solemn beauty; how could there be prolonged delusion? May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhavati).

Universally encourage the cultivation of the three blessings, so that all can extinguish the five fires of affliction. When the Bodhi mind is awakened, merit has already arrived; when Amitabha Buddha is contemplated, sins will be eliminated. The birds, lotuses, and pearl light are all revolving; the pleasant wind brings harmonious music. Only rejoice that practice is easy; why worry that the holy fruit of Buddhahood is far away? The color of the pearls is the water, and the golden light is the terrace. When one arrives, the lotuses naturally scatter; according to one's wishes, the lotuses will open again. If one can aspire to that place with an upright mind, one should dedicate all good deeds. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhavati).

Wash the heart with the nectar of sweet dew, delight the eyes with clouds of wondrous flowers. Rebirth together is easy to recognize, equal lifespans are difficult to distinguish. Much joy without abandoning the path, distant sounds do not hinder hearing. Why be greedy for the five turbidities, peacefully letting oneself be consumed by fire? May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss.

I wholeheartedly take refuge in Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) of the Western Pure Land.

Celestial beings appear in the lotus dais, attendants are seen in the light. Suspended in the air is a four-jeweled pavilion, facing a surrounding seven-layered railing. Those with much doubt linger long in the borderlands, those with little virtue find it difficult to be born in higher grades. For now, let us not discuss other vows; with the Western Pure Land, the mind is already at peace. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss.

The six senses (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind) are constantly in accord with the Path, the names of the three evil realms (hell, hungry ghost, animal) are forever severed. In an instant, one travels everywhere, and upon returning, attains the patience of non-birth. The ground is level, infinitely vast, and the wind is long and clear everywhere. A message to those with mindful hearts: together, let us leave this city of suffering. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss.

I wholeheartedly take refuge in Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (Avalokiteśvara) of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

A thousand-spoked wheels manifest light beneath the feet, the five paths (hell, hungry ghost, animal, human, and celestial) appear in the light. Compassionate guidance is constant and never ceases, the path of people returning is also not exhausted. The mouth proclaims while still in samadhi, the mind is quiet and even more freely penetrating. Those who hear the name all vow to be reborn, how many clusters of flowers bloom daily? May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss.

I wholeheartedly take refuge in Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva (Mahāsthāmaprāpta) of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Wisdom power marks the unsurpassed, the body's light is fully endowed with conditions. Shaking all the jeweled lands, holding a seat of a golden lotus. The flocks of birds are not real birds, the celestial beings are not truly celestial.

【English Translation】 English version It is essential to know that seeking wonderful joy depends entirely on whether one can fully uphold the precepts, allowing the fragrance of morality to permeate. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (referring to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss). Namo with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in the pure great assembly of all Bodhisattvas in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. Universally, for the sake of teachers, monks, parents, virtuous friends, and all sentient beings in the Dharma realm, may we sever the three obstacles of body, speech, and mind, and together be reborn in the land of Amitabha (Amitabha). I take refuge and repent. The Sixth Shramana Shandao (Shandao) made vows of praise verses for rebirth. Respectfully following the Sixteen Contemplations Sutra, bowing twenty times at noon each day (the repentance ritual is the same before and after). Namo with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land. Contemplate that the Land of Ultimate Bliss of Amitabha Buddha is vast, spacious, and flat, composed of various treasures. It is adorned by Amitabha Buddha's forty-eight great vows, surpassing all other Buddha lands, being the most supreme and exquisite. Whether it be the great assembly of this country or other worlds, their names cannot be counted even if one exhausts kalpas. Universally exhorting everyone to return to the West and participate in the assembly there, where samadhis as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River are naturally attained. Underground is adorned with seven-jeweled banners, in immeasurable, boundless, and countless quantities. The eight directions and eight faces are composed of hundreds of treasures, seeing it one can naturally realize the principle of non-birth. The treasure land of non-birth is eternal and unchanging, each treasure stream emits countless rays of light. Practitioners wholeheartedly gaze upon it, leaping and rejoicing as they enter the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. Namo with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land. The adornments above ground transform without limit, the roads formed by golden ropes are not man-made. Rather, they are skillfully adorned by Amitabha Buddha's vows and wisdom, with Bodhisattvas and devas scattering flowers upon them. The treasure land, treasure colors, and treasure light fly about, each ray of light transforming into countless terraces. Within the terraces are trillions of treasure pavilions, surrounded by hundreds of billions of treasure banners on the sides of the terraces. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. Namo with utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land. In the empty space above each terrace, it is filled with adorned treasures.

【English Translation】 English version Infinite Joy Eight kinds of pure breezes arise seeking light, constantly playing music in response to the opportune sound of Dharma. This opportune sound of Dharma is somewhat difficult to truly receive; in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, gather your mind and contemplate attentively. Only when sleeping can you relax a little, but you should still constantly remember Amitabha (Amitabha), reaching the state of non-action in Samadhi (Samadhi), which is Nirvana (Nirvana). May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhavati). The true form's light pervades the entire Dharma Realm, those touched by the light will not regress in their minds. Day and night, six times a day, focus on contemplating Amitabha, at the end of life, there will be happiness like entering Samadhi. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. Sit upright in the lotus position and enter Samadhi (deep meditation), visualizing the mind riding on mindfulness to the West. Visually perceive Amitabha's Land of Ultimate Bliss, the ground and sky adorned with the seven treasures. Amitabha's body is immeasurably vast, repeatedly urging sentient beings to contemplate a smaller form. A sixteen-foot or eight-foot form manifests according to the capacity of beings, the halo-Buddha is equal to the true Buddha. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (Sukhavati, the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha). Those of the highest class are people of superior practice and superior faculties, seeking rebirth in the Pure Land, severing greed and hatred. Suddenly soaring into the sky, traveling in the Dharma realm, in an instant, I receive the prediction of Buddhahood, named Non-Action. Such a carefree and boundless place, if I don't go now, when shall I wait?

The precepts (śīla-skandha, categories of precepts) are boundless, and our violations are also boundless. Whether sitting or standing, one should single-mindedly join palms, face west, and recite ten times the names of Amitābha Buddha, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, and the pure great assembly of Bodhisattvas. Disciple (name) is currently a mortal in the cycle of birth and death, with deep karmic obstacles, sinking into the suffering of the six realms, which cannot be fully described. Today, having encountered a good advisor, I have heard the name of Amitābha Buddha's original vow, and I recite it single-mindedly, seeking rebirth in the Pure Land. May the Buddha be compassionate and not abandon the original great vow to receive me. Disciple does not recognize the physical form and light of Amitābha Buddha.
