師在筠州九峰山。受疏了披法衣。乃拈起示眾云。會么。若也不會。今日無端走入水牯牛隊里去也。還知么。筠陽九曲萍實楊岐。乃升座。時有僧出衆。師云。漁翁未擲釣。躍鱗衝浪來。僧便喝。師云。不通道。僧撫掌歸眾。師云。消得龍王多少風。問師唱誰家曲。宗風嗣阿誰。師云。有馬騎馬無馬步行。進云。少年長老足有機籌。師云。念爾年老。放爾三十棒。問如何是佛。師云。三腳驢子弄蹄行。進云。莫只者便是。師云。湖南長老。問人法俱遣。未是衲僧極則。佛祖雙亡。猶是學人疑處。未審和尚如何為人。師云。爾只要看破新長老。進云。與么則旋斫生柴帶葉燒。師云。七九六十三。師云。更有問話者么。試出眾相見。楊岐今日性命。在爾諸人手裡。一任橫拖倒拽。為什麼如此。大丈夫兒須是當衆抉擇。莫背地裡似水底捺葫蘆相似。當衆引驗莫便面赤。有么有么出來抉擇看。如無。楊岐失利。師才下座。九峰勤和尚把住云。今日喜遇同參。師云。同參底事作么生。峰云。九峰牽犁楊岐拽杷。師云。

I wonder how the Master guides people?' The Zen Master said, 'You only need to see through the new Elder.' The monk advanced, saying, 'Then it's like freshly chopping green firewood and burning it with the leaves.' The Zen Master said, 'Seven times nine is sixty-three.' Why do I say this? A great man must make decisions in front of everyone; don't be like pressing a gourd under water in secret. 正當與么時。楊岐在前九峰在前。峰擬議。師托開云將謂同參。元來不是。
師入院上堂。僧問。如何是楊岐境。師云。獨松巖畔秀。猿向下山啼。進云。如何是境中人。師云。貧家女子攜籃去。牧童橫笛望源歸。師乃云。霧鎖長空風生大野。百草樹木作大師子吼。演說摩訶大般若。三世諸佛在爾諸人腳跟下轉大法輪。若也會得。功不浪施。若也不會。莫道楊岐山勢險。前頭更有最高峰。
上堂云。百丈把火開田說大義。是何言歟。楊岐兩日種禾。亦有個奇特語。乃云。達磨大師無當門齒。
上堂。楊岐一要。千聖同妙。佈施大眾。拍禪床一下云。果然失照。
上堂。楊岐一言。隨方就圓。若也擬議。十萬八千。下座。
上堂。楊岐一語。呵佛叱祖。明眼人前。不得錯舉。下座。

禪師入院上堂說法,有僧人問:『什麼是楊岐的境界?』禪師說:『獨松巖邊景色秀麗,猿猴向山下啼叫。』僧人進一步問:『什麼是境界中的人?』禪師說:『貧窮人家的女子提著籃子離去,牧童橫吹著笛子望著源頭回家。』禪師於是說:『霧氣籠罩著長空,風吹動著廣闊的原野,各種草木都在作大師子吼,演說摩訶大般若(Mahaprajna,偉大的智慧)。三世諸佛都在你們每個人的腳跟下轉大法輪。』如果能夠領會,就不會白費功夫。如果不能領會,不要說楊岐山勢險峻,前面還有更高的山峰。
上堂說法,禪師說:『百丈(Baizhang,禪師名)拿著火把開田,說大義,這是什麼意思呢?』楊岐禪師兩天種稻,也有個奇特的說法。於是說:『達磨大師(Bodhidharma)沒有門牙。』
上堂說法,禪師說:『楊岐禪師的一個要點,千聖都覺得巧妙。』佈施給大眾,拍了一下禪床說:『果然是失去了照應。』
上堂說法,禪師說:『楊岐禪師的一句話,隨著方圓而適應。如果想要議論,就會有十萬八千里的差距。』下座。
上堂說法,禪師說:『楊岐禪師的一句話,呵斥佛,呵斥祖師。在明眼人面前,不能錯誤地引用。』下座。
上堂說法,禪師說:『楊岐禪師的一句話,要趕緊睜大眼睛看清楚。在長連床上,拿起勺子,拿著筷子。』下座。
上堂說法,有僧人問:『在急流的江邊需要下釣,如何才能釣到大鱉回來?』禪師說:『撒手在廣闊的天空之外,世人都不明白。』僧人進一步問:『明白的人會怎麼做?』禪師說:『雲彩在山嶺上產生。』僧人說:『真正的大師天然存在。』禪師說:『你只是個唸誦言語的傢伙。』禪師於是說:『不見一法是最大的過患。』拿起拄杖說:『穿透了釋迦老子(Sakyamuni)的鼻孔,怎麼說才能說出脫身的一句話?』在不用水洗水的地方說出一句話來。良久,禪師說:『早知道不要走山下的小路,果然聽到了猿猴的叫聲,令人肝腸寸斷。』
【English Translation】 English version: Right at this moment, is it Yangqi (Yangqi, mountain name, also refers to the Yangqi school) in front or Jiufeng (Jiufeng, mountain name) in front? Jiufeng intends to discuss, but Zen Master Yangqi, through Zen Master Kaiyun, says, 'I thought we were fellow practitioners, but it turns out we are not.'
The Zen Master enters the monastery and ascends the hall to preach. A monk asks, 'What is the realm of Yangqi?' The Zen Master says, 'The scenery beside the Dú Sōng Rock is beautiful, and monkeys cry down the mountain.' The monk further asks, 'What are the people in the realm?' The Zen Master says, 'A poor family's daughter goes away carrying a basket, and a shepherd boy plays the flute horizontally, gazing towards the source to return home.' The Zen Master then says, 'Mist locks the long sky, and wind arises in the vast wilderness. All grasses and trees are making the great lion's roar, expounding the Maha Prajna (Mahaprajna, great wisdom). The Buddhas of the three worlds are turning the great Dharma wheel under the feet of each of you.' If you can understand, your efforts will not be in vain. If you cannot understand, do not say that the mountain of Yangqi is dangerous; there are even higher peaks ahead.
Ascending the hall to preach, the Zen Master says, 'Baizhang (Baizhang, name of a Zen master) opens the field with a torch, speaking of great righteousness. What does this mean?' Zen Master Yangqi plants rice for two days and also has a peculiar saying. Then he says, 'Bodhidharma (Bodhidharma) has no front teeth.'
Ascending the hall to preach, the Zen Master says, 'Yangqi's one essential point is wonderfully shared by a thousand sages.' Giving to the assembly, he strikes the Zen bed once and says, 'Indeed, the illumination is lost.'
Ascending the hall to preach, the Zen Master says, 'Yangqi's one word adapts to every situation. If you try to deliberate, there will be a difference of one hundred and eight thousand.' Descends from the seat.
Ascending the hall to preach, the Zen Master says, 'Yangqi's one word scolds the Buddha and scolds the patriarchs. In front of those with clear eyes, do not quote it wrongly.' Descends from the seat.

The Zen Master says, 'Release your hand beyond the vast sky; people of the world do not understand.' The monk further asks, 'What do those who understand do?' The Zen Master says, 'Clouds arise on the ridge.' The monk says, 'A true master is naturally present.' The Zen Master says, 'You are just a reciter of words.' The Zen Master then says, 'Not seeing a single dharma is the greatest fault.' Picking up his staff, he says, 'Piercing the nose of old Sakyamuni (Sakyamuni), how can one say a word to escape?' Speak a word in a place where water is not used to wash water. After a long silence, the Zen Master says, 'Knowing that I should not walk the path at the foot of the mountain, I indeed heard the sound of monkeys crying, breaking my heart.'
上堂。拍禪床一下云。只個心心心是佛。十方世界最靈物。釋迦老子說夢。三世諸佛說夢。天下老和尚說夢。且問諸人。還曾作夢么。若也作夢。向半夜裡道將一句來。良久云。人間縱有真訊息。偷向楊岐說夢看。參。

師拈起拄杖云。一即一切一切即一。劃一劃云。山河大地天下老和尚百雜碎。作么生是諸人鼻孔。良久云。劍為不平離寶匣。藥因救病出金瓶。喝一喝卓一下。參。
上堂。秋雨洗秋林。秋林咸翠色。傷嗟傅大士。何處尋彌勒。
上堂。薄福住楊岐。年來氣力衰。寒風凋敗葉。猶喜故人歸。啰唻哩。拈上死柴頭。且向無煙火。
上堂。楊岐無旨的。栽田博飯吃。說夢老瞿曇。何處覓軌跡。喝一喝拍禪床一下。參。
上堂。凡聖不存佛祖何立。大眾。清平世界不許人攙奪行市。

(The Master) ascended the hall. He struck the Zen chair once and said, 'This mind, mind, mind is Buddha, the most spiritual thing in the ten directions of the world. Śākyamuni (the founder of Buddhism) is talking in his sleep, the Buddhas of the three times (past, present, and future) are talking in their sleep, and all the old monks in the world are talking in their sleep.' Now, I ask you all, have you ever dreamed? If you have dreamed, then speak a sentence in the middle of the night.' After a long pause, he said, 'Even if there is true news in the human world, it is only secretly coming to Yangqi to see people talking in their sleep.' Contemplate!
(The Master) ascended the hall. Sitting and cutting off the universe, heaven and earth are dark. Letting go of one move, the rain is smooth and the wind is favorable. Although it is so, the worldly air has not been removed. A monk asked, 'To avoid the troubles in the heart, one should look at the ancient teachings. What are the ancient teachings?' The Master said, 'The universe is bright with the moon, and the blue sea is clear with waves.' The monk asked further, 'I don't know how to look?' The Master said, 'Under your feet.' The monk asked again, 'What if you suddenly encounter a vast expanse of flood?' The Master said, 'Let go of one move, the cross is vertical and horizontal. What else?' The monk then shouted and clapped his hands once. The Master said, 'Look, this is a warrior.' The monk said, 'Startling the snake in the grass.' The Master said, 'Everyone should also know.'
(The Master) picked up the staff and said, 'One is all, and all is one.' He drew a line and said, 'The mountains, rivers, and earth, and all the old monks in the world, are all smashed to pieces.' What are everyone's nostrils? After a long pause, he said, 'The sword leaves the treasure box because of injustice, and the medicine is taken out of the golden bottle to save the sick.' Shout once, and strike (put down) once. Contemplate!
(The Master) ascended the hall. The autumn rain washes the autumn forest, and the autumn forest is all green. It is a pity for Fù Dàshì (a lay Buddhist of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, known for his contributions to Buddhism), where to find Maitreya (the future Buddha)?
(The Master) ascended the hall. I, a person of little fortune, live in Yangqi, and my strength has declined in recent years. The cold wind blows down the withered leaves, and I am still happy that old friends have returned. Ro lai li (meaningless syllables). Pick up the dying firewood and make a fire in a smokeless place.
(The Master) ascended the hall. Yangqi has no special purpose, just farming to eat. Where to find the traces of the old Gautama (Śākyamuni Buddha's surname) who speaks dreams? Shout once, and slap the Zen chair once. Contemplate!
(The Master) ascended the hall. If ordinary people and saints do not exist, how can the Buddha and the ancestors stand? Everyone, this peaceful world does not allow people to seize the market.

師于興化寺開堂府主龍圖度疏與師。師才接得。乃提起云。大眾。府主龍圖駕部諸官。盡為爾諸人說第一義諦了也。諸人還知么。若知。家國安寧。事同一家。若不知。曲勞僧正度與表白宣讀。且要天下人知。表白宣疏了乃云。今之日。賢侯霧擁海眾臨筵。最上上乘。請師敷演。師云。若是最上上乘。千聖側立。佛祖潛蹤。何故如此。為諸人盡同古佛。還信得及么。若信得及大家散去。若不散去。山僧謾爾諸人去也。遂升座拈香云。此一瓣香。祝延今上皇帝聖壽無窮。又拈香云。此一瓣香。奉為知府龍圖駕部諸官。伏願。常居祿位。復拈香云。大眾。還知落處么。若也不知。卻為注破。奉酬石霜山慈明禪師法乳之恩。山僧不免薰天炙地去也。便燒。凈行大師白槌云。法筵龍象眾。當觀第一義。師云。大眾。早是落二落三了也。諸人何不負丈夫之氣。若不然者。有疑請問。僧問。昔日梵王請佛。天雨四花。府主臨筵。有何祥瑞。師云。片云收岳面。浪自靜瀟湘。進云。大眾沾恩。學人禮謝。師云。斷頭船子下揚州。僧問。埋兵掉斗即不問。今日當場事若何。師云。楊岐入界來。未曾逢見者作家。僧以

The Master opened the Dharma assembly at Xinghua Temple. The Prefectural Governor Longtu (official title) presented a memorial to the Master. As soon as the Master received it, he raised it and said, 'Everyone, the Prefectural Governor Longtu, the officials of the Ministry of Personnel (official title), have already explained the First Principle to all of you. Do you all understand? If you understand, the country will be peaceful and secure, and matters will be like one family. Moreover, do you expect this mountain monk to waste more words? Although this is so, let's talk about some entangled, complex, and flourishing great functions in the second opportunity. Every step is entirely true; since this name has been established, truth is not established apart from truth; the place of establishment is truth. You must understand this: where it arises, there is liberation everywhere. This is called climbing a pole in the marketplace; everyone can see it. What do you say about the phrase 'Gold does not gamble for gold'? Is there anyone who can say it? Try to come out and stumble and jump. If not, this mountain monk will lose today. But I am honored at this moment to have the presence of the Prefect, Longtu, Vice Prefect, Jiabu, and all the officials, inviting me to preside over the Yungai Dharma assembly. The vows of all the officials can be described as profound and vast, being loyal ministers of the country, establishing the Dharma banner, and above, solemnly adorning the emperor's foundation. When the senior monk unfolds his bowl in the monks' hall, Yun Gai also unfolds his bowl with the senior monk; when sleeping, he sleeps with the senior monk; when standing, he stands with the senior monk. The tall have tall Dharmakayas, and the short have short Dharmakayas. Where is there any separation in Maitreya's (future Buddha) use and coming and going? Although this is so, tell me, is Yun Gai at the bow or the stern of the boat? Are there any clever monks in the assembly who can see it? Ascending the hall, he said, 'The green mountains are steep and the white sun is like a shuttle. The Dragon Gate has no guests, and the bustling market has many people. Moreover, you must understand the bloodline of the ancients.』 So, what is the bloodline of the ancients?』 After a long pause, the master said, 『Where wisdom does not reach, be careful not to comment rashly.』 Entering the hall, he said, 『The cold wind is fierce and without season; waves crash against the cliffs, and the rocks break. Fishing boats capsize in Dongting Lake (Dongting Lake, a large lake in China), and snowy roads cut off travelers in the mountains. A clear breeze and bright moon penetrate the secluded pass. Ultimately, what is the wonderful key?』 Having said this, he descended from the seat. Entering the hall, he said, 『The path beyond, a thousand sages have not transmitted it; students exhaust themselves like monkeys grasping at shadows. Do you all understand this moment? If you understand, you are worthy of offerings in heaven and on earth. If you do not understand, Yama (Yama, the lord of death) is clear-eyed.』 Entering the hall, he said, 『All of you are studying the Buddha Dharma. If it is not right, then say it is not right; if it is right, then say it is right. You must clearly distinguish between black and white; do not mistake the balance weight.』 Treasure this! To understand Mount Sumeru on the tip of a needle, the ocean in the eyebrows is always vast and boundless.』 Entering the hall, he said, 『Like the sky universally covering, like the earth universally supporting, all the Buddhas of the three worlds are in your nostrils. After thirty years, do not let down this old monk.』 Entering the hall, he said, 『Puhua (Puhua, a Chan monk of the Tang Dynasty) strikes openly and strikes secretly; Budai (Budai, an incarnation of Maitreya Bodhisattva) scatters horizontally and scatters vertically. Then, is the one who said 'decaying' correct, or is the one who said 'not decaying' correct? Do you understand? 'Decaying' and 'not decaying' are neither internal nor external, without the slightest separation, usually right in front of you.
Ascending the hall to preach. Someone asked, 'What is seizing the person but not seizing the environment?' Ji said, 'Sitting in meditation in the hermitage, white clouds rise from the peak.' What is seizing the environment but not seizing the person? Ji said, 'Flickering red clouds scatter, the guide of Tiantong (Tiantong, a place name) is kind.' What is seizing both the person and the environment? Ji said, 'Strong bones all vanish with the red shadows, young shoots all follow the white clouds and disappear.' What is neither seizing the person nor seizing the environment? Ji said, 'After a long drought, meeting rain for the first time, meeting an old acquaintance in a foreign land.' Someone asked, 'What is guest within guest?' Ji said, 'Who says there are distant and close relatives?' What is guest within host? Suddenly, he transcends the borders of Silla (ancient Korean kingdom).'
The master ascended the hall and said, 'From ancient times to the present, the sun, moon, mountains, and rivers remain the same. If you can understand this, all the Buddhas of the ten directions enter through the same gate of Nirvana. If you don't understand, slandering this sutra will result in such and such consequences.'
The master ascended the hall and said, 'Leaping on the edge of a blade, running in a speck of dust. Laboriously going back and forth, who is the true confidant?'
The master ascended the hall and said, 'Yesterday, three new monks arrived and came out to pay respects.' The monks came out to bow. The monk intended to pick up his sitting mat again, and the master struck him again, saying, 'Blind man!' The monk hesitated. The master struck him again and said, 'Sit down and have some tea.' The monk then sat down. The master asked, 'Where did you come from?' The monk said, 'Shishuang (place name).' The master said, 'No wonder.' The master asked the monk, 'I have something to ask you, venerable, but I can't hit the old monk.' The monk said, 'What's the reason?' Preface to the Recorded Sayings of Monk Hui of Yun Gai Mountain in Tanzhou
In the Li Tang Dynasty, there was an outstanding figure in Zen. Great Master Ma (Mazu Daoyi) occupied Leitan in Jiangxi. He had eighty-four disciples. Among them, the most prominent was Baizhang Hai (Baizhang Huaihai), who obtained his great function. Baizhang Hai produced Huangbo Yun (Huangbo Xiyun), who obtained his great application. The rest were merely leading and guiding. Huangbo Yun produced Yong (Yi Yong). Yi Yong produced Zhao (Jian Zhao). Jian Zhao produced Nian (Chu Nian). Chu Nian produced Zhao (Hui Zhao). Hui Zhao produced Yuan (Fa Yuan). Fa Yuan produced Hui (Yangqi Fanghui). Yangqi Fanghui first resided at Yangqi Mountain in Yuanzhou, and later at Yun Gai Mountain in Changsha. At that time, people said that Baizhang Hai obtained his great function, Huangbo Yun obtained his great application, and the only one who obtained both was Monk Hui? Monk Hui presided over the Dharma seat twice, for a total of more than twelve years. He rectified the principles and adapted to circumstances to receive and guide. I have long admired the name of Teacher Hui (Yangqi Fanghui). Therefore, I asked Shou Duan for the scroll he compiled, burned incense, and opened it to read. Great indeed is Teacher Hui's wit and eloquence! It is as if the giant spirit split open Mount Taihua and Mount Shouyang, and the river flowed swiftly without stagnation. If it were not for the root of the supreme Mahayana, how could one be in accord with it? Shou Duan ordered me to write a preface so that Teacher Hui's path would spread throughout the world, and Teacher Hui's name and practice are known to all who have knowledge, so I cannot decline. I will simply narrate the cause of this matter truthfully. Teacher Hui was a native of Yichun in Yuanzhou, with the surname Leng. He left home at Daowu Mountain in Liuyang, Tanzhou. His secular age was fifty-four, and he passed away at Yun Gai Mountain. The pagoda still exists.
