師。入院開堂。宣疏了。師云。大眾。大家散去。早落二頭三首。如不散去。今日熱瞞諸人去也。宜陽秀水。萍實楚江。遂升座。拈香云。此一瓣香。奉為今上皇帝。聖壽千秋。永昌佛日。次一瓣香。奉為州縣官僚。檀那十信。此一瓣香。諸人還知落處么。若也知得落處。更不須開兩片皮。若也不知。為先住南源。次住石霜。今住潭州興化禪寺。諸人還識興化么。如不識。不免帶累上祖。遂趺座。維那白槌訖。師云。早落第二義。大眾散去。猶較些子。既不散去。有疑請問。僧問。師唱誰家曲。宗風嗣阿誰。師云。隔江打鼓不聞聲。僧云。興化的子。臨濟兒孫。師云。今日因齋慶贊。師乃云。更有問話者么。所以道。諸供養中。法供養最為勝。良久云。百千諸佛。天下老和尚出世。皆以直指人心。見性成佛。若向者里明得去。盡與百千諸佛同參。若向者里。未能明得。楊岐未免惹帶口業。況諸人儘是靈山會上。受佛付囑底人。何須自家退屈。還有記得底人么。爾且道。靈山末後一句。作么生道。如無。楊岐今日敗闕。以方會。俾欲深云隱拙。隨眾延時。豈謂郡縣官僚。洎諸檀信。共崇三

師(指楊岐方會)入院開堂。宣讀完疏文后,師說:『大眾,大家都散去吧,免得落入二頭三首(比喻落入俗套)。如果不散去,今天可要讓諸位感到厭煩了。』宜陽秀水,萍實楚江。於是升座,拈香說:『這一瓣香,奉為當今皇帝,祝願聖壽千秋,佛日永昌。』又拈一瓣香,奉為州縣官僚,檀那(施主)十信。『這一瓣香,諸位可知它落向何處?如果知道落向何處,就不必再多費口舌。如果不知道,我曾先後住持南源、石霜,現在住持潭州興化禪寺。諸位還認識興化嗎?如果不認識,難免牽累上祖。』於是趺坐。維那(寺院中負責維持秩序的僧人)敲槌完畢。師說:『早落第二義(方便之說),大眾散去,還算好些。既然不散去,有疑問就請提問。』僧人問:『師父唱的是誰家的曲調?宗風傳承自哪位祖師?』師說:『隔江打鼓聽不見聲音。』僧人說:『是興化的子孫,臨濟的兒孫。』師說:『今日因齋飯而慶賀讚頌。』師於是說:『還有要問話的嗎?所以說,諸供養中,法供養最為殊勝。』良久,師說:『百千諸佛,天下老和尚出世,都以直指人心,見性成佛為宗旨。如果能在此處明白,就與百千諸佛同參。如果在此處未能明白,楊岐我未免要惹上口業。況且諸位都是靈山會上,接受佛陀咐囑的人,何須自己退縮?還有記得佛陀咐囑的人嗎?你們且說,靈山末後一句,該怎麼說?如果沒有,楊岐我今天就敗闕了。』以方會我本想深藏不露,隨眾度日,豈料郡縣官僚,以及各位檀越信士,共同崇尚三寶。

Yangqi Fanghui's Later Records

The Master (referring to Yangqi Fanghui) entered the monastery and began the Dharma assembly. After reciting the memorial, the Master said, 'Everyone, you should all disperse, lest you fall into the 'two heads and three necks' (a metaphor for falling into clichés). If you do not disperse, I will bore you all today.' Yiyang Xiushui, Ping is like Chu River. Thereupon, he ascended the seat, took incense, and said, 'This one incense stick, I offer it to the current Emperor, wishing him a long life and eternal prosperity for the Buddha's light.' Then he took another incense stick and offered it to the state and county officials, and the ten faiths of the benefactors (dāna). 'This one incense stick, do you all know where it falls? If you know where it falls, there is no need to waste words. If you do not know, I have successively resided at Nanyuan, Shishuang, and now reside at Xinghua Zen Monastery in Tanzhou. Do you all recognize Xinghua? If you do not recognize him, I will inevitably implicate the ancestors.' Thereupon, he sat in the lotus position. The director (the monk in charge of maintaining order in the monastery) finished striking the gavel. The Master said, 'Falling into the secondary meaning (expedient teachings) early, it would be better if everyone dispersed. Since you do not disperse, please ask if you have any doubts.' A monk asked, 'Whose tune is the Master singing? Whose ancestral style is he inheriting?' The Master said, 'Beating a drum across the river, one cannot hear the sound.' The monk said, 'He is a descendant of Xinghua, a descendant of Linji.' The Master said, 'Today we celebrate and praise because of the vegetarian meal.' The Master then said, 'Is there anyone else who wants to ask questions? Therefore, it is said that among all offerings, the Dharma offering is the most supreme.' After a long while, the Master said, 'Hundreds of thousands of Buddhas, all the old masters in the world, all take directly pointing to the human mind and seeing one's nature to become a Buddha as their purpose. If you can understand this here, you will participate with hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. If you cannot understand this here, I, Yangqi, will inevitably incur karmic retribution for my words. Moreover, you are all people who received the Buddha's entrustment at the assembly on Vulture Peak, why should you retreat yourselves? Is there anyone who remembers the Buddha's entrustment? You should say, what is the last sentence of the assembly on Vulture Peak? If there is none, I, Yangqi, will fail today.' I, Fanghui, originally wanted to hide my talents and spend my days with the crowd, but unexpectedly, the state and county officials, as well as all the benefactors and believers, commonly revered the Three Jewels.


寶。續佛壽命。令法久住。俾令山僧住持此剎。亦非小緣。所有一毫之善。上祝皇帝萬歲。家宰千秋。大眾且道。今日事作么生。良久云。來年更有新條在。惱亂春風卒未休。

上堂。僧問。如何是祖師西來意。師云。擔頭不負書。師云。心生種種法生。心滅種種法滅。拈起拄杖。卓一下云。大千世界百雜碎。捧缽盂向香積世界。吃飯去也。

上堂。僧問。如何是不動尊。師云。大眾齊著力。僧云。與么則香燈不絕去也。師云。且喜勿交涉師乃云。一切法皆是佛法。佛殿對三門。僧堂對廚庫。若也會得。擔取缽盂拄杖。一任天下橫行。若也不會。更且面壁。

上堂。僧問。如何是佛。師云。賊是人做。師乃云。萬法是心光。諸緣惟性曉。本無迷悟人。只要今日了。山河大地。有什麼過。山河大地。目前諸法。總在諸人腳跟下。自是諸人不信。可謂古釋迦不前。今彌勒不后。楊岐與么。可謂買帽相頭。

上堂。心是根。法是塵。兩種猶如鏡上痕。痕垢盡時光始現。心法雙忘性即真。遂拍禪床一下云。山河大地何處有也。且作么生道得不受人瞞底句。若也道得。向十字路頭。道將一句來。如無。楊岐今日失利。

上堂。一塵才起。大地全收。遂拈起拄杖云。須彌山上走馬。大洋海里𨁝跳。

上堂說法。有僧人問:『什麼是祖師西來意?』 師父說:『肩上不背書。』 師父說:『心生種種法生,心滅種種法滅。』 拿起拄杖,頓了一下說:『大千世界粉碎成百雜碎,我捧著缽盂向香積世界吃飯去了。』

上堂說法。有僧人問:『如何是不動尊(Acalanātha,佛教中的明王,意為不動明王)?』 師父說:『大眾一起用力。』 僧人說:『這樣香燈就不會斷絕了。』 師父說:『暫且歡喜,不要多管閒事。』 師父於是說:『一切法都是佛法,佛殿對著三門,僧堂對著廚庫。如果能夠領會,就挑起缽盂拄著枴杖,任憑你在天下橫行。如果不能領會,就繼續面壁思過。』

上堂說法。有僧人問:『什麼是佛?』 師父說:『賊是人做的。』 師父於是說:『萬法是心的光明,各種因緣唯有自性才能明白。本來就沒有迷惑和覺悟的人,只要今日了悟。』 山河大地,有什麼過錯?山河大地,眼前的一切法,都在各位的腳下。只是各位不相信。可以說是過去的釋迦(Śākyamuni,佛教創始人)沒有在前,現在的彌勒(Maitreya,未來佛)沒有在後。楊岐我這樣說,可以說是買帽子看人頭(比喻不相稱)。

上堂說法。心是根,法是塵,這兩種就像鏡子上的痕跡。痕跡污垢消失乾淨,光明才會顯現。心和法都忘記了,自性就真實了。』 於是拍了一下禪床說:『山河大地在哪裡呢?』 且怎麼說才能說出不被人欺騙的話?如果能說出來,就在十字路口,說一句來聽聽。如果沒有,楊岐我今天就失敗了。

To prolong the Buddha's life, to ensure the Dharma's long-lasting presence, and to allow this mountain monk to preside over this monastery is no small matter. May every bit of merit, even the smallest, be dedicated to wishing the Emperor ten thousand years of life and the Chief Minister a thousand autumns. Now, everyone, tell me, how should we view today's event? (Pauses for a long time) I say, next year there will be new branches growing, and the disturbance of the spring breeze will not cease.

Ascending the hall for Dharma talk. A monk asked, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' The Master said, 'Not carrying books on the shoulder.' The Master said, 'When the mind arises, all kinds of dharmas arise; when the mind ceases, all kinds of dharmas cease.' Picking up the staff, he struck it once and said, 'The great thousand worlds are shattered into a hundred fragments. I'm holding my bowl and going to the Fragrant Accumulation World to eat.'

Ascending the hall for Dharma talk. A monk asked, 'What is the Immovable One (Acalanātha, a Wisdom King in Buddhism)?' The Master said, 'Everyone put forth effort together.' The monk said, 'In that case, the incense lamp will not be extinguished.' The Master said, 'Rejoice for now, but don't interfere.' The Master then said, 'All dharmas are Buddha-dharma. The Buddha hall faces the three gates, the monks' hall faces the kitchen. If you can understand this, then carry your bowl and staff, and roam freely throughout the world. If you cannot understand, then continue to face the wall.'

Ascending the hall for Dharma talk. A monk asked, 'What is Buddha?' The Master said, 'A thief is made by a person.' The Master then said, 'All dharmas are the light of the mind, and only the self-nature understands all conditions. Originally, there are no deluded or enlightened people, only today's realization matters.' Mountains and rivers, what fault do they have? Mountains and rivers, all the dharmas before your eyes, are all under your feet. It's just that you don't believe it. It can be said that the ancient Śākyamuni (the founder of Buddhism) is not before, and the present Maitreya (the future Buddha) is not after. Yangqi (the Master himself) saying this is like buying a hat based on the size of the head (a metaphor for being mismatched).'

Ascending the hall for Dharma talk. 'The mind is the root, the dharma is the dust; these two are like marks on a mirror. When the marks and dirt are completely gone, the light will appear. When both mind and dharma are forgotten, the self-nature is true.' Then he slapped the Zen bed once and said, 'Where are the mountains and rivers?' How can you say a phrase that cannot be deceived? If you can say it, then at the crossroads, say a sentence for us to hear. If not, Yangqi will fail today.'

Ascending the hall for Dharma talk. 'As soon as a speck of dust arises, the entire earth is gathered up.' Then he picked up the staff and said, 'Riding a horse on Mount Sumeru (the sacred mountain in Buddhist cosmology), leaping in the great ocean.'


鬧市中忽撞著者個。是人知有。且道。黑地裡穿針一句。作么生道。良久云。尋常不欲頻開口。為是渾身著衲衣。

上堂。云心隨萬境轉。轉處實能幽。隨流認得性。無喜復無憂。復云。天堂地獄。罩卻汝頭。釋迦老子。在爾腳跟下。當明對暗。時人知有。鬧市裡把將鼻孔來。還有道得么。試出來。與楊岐出氣。如無。楊岐今日失利。

上堂。僧問。祖師面壁。意旨如何。師云。西天人不會唐言。僧云。昨日雨落。今日天晴。是人道得。請和尚出格道一句。師以兩手捺膝坐。僧云。大殺盡力道。只道得一半。師云。分身兩處看。僧指侍者云。和尚為什麼不著鞋。師云。者漆桶。僧便禮拜歸眾。

師。乃舉外道問佛。不問有言。不問無言。世尊良久。外道讚歎。世尊大慈大悲。開我迷云。令我得入。外道去後。阿難問世尊云。外道見個什麼。便道令我得入。世尊云。如世良馬。見鞭影而行。師云。道吾師兄云。世尊隻眼通三世。外道雙眸貫五天。道吾師兄。善則善矣。甚與古人出氣。楊岐道。金鍮不辨。玉石不分。大眾要會么。世尊輟已從人。外道因齋慶贊。遂以拄杖卓一下。喝一喝。

Now, how would you express the phrase 'threading a needle in the dark'? After a long pause, he said, 'I usually don't want to open my mouth frequently, because I'm wearing a patched robe all over.' (Patched robe: a monk's garment)

Ascending the hall to preach. He said, 'The mind follows the myriad realms and turns, the turning place is truly profound. Following the flow and recognizing the self-nature, there is neither joy nor sorrow.' He also said, 'Heaven and hell, cover your head. Old Shakyamuni, is right under your feet.' When light and darkness are opposed, people know there's something there. Bringing the nose over in the bustling marketplace, can anyone say it? Try to come out and vent for Yangqi (Yangqi Fanghui, a Chan master). If not, Yangqi will fail today.

Ascending the hall to preach. A monk asked, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch facing the wall (Bodhidharma facing the wall for nine years)?' The master said, 'People from the Western Heaven (referring to India) don't speak the language of the Tang Dynasty.' The monk said, 'Yesterday it rained, today it's sunny, everyone can say that. Please, Master, say something out of the ordinary.' The master sat with his hands pressing on his knees. The monk said, 'Saying it with great effort, you only said half of it.' The master said, 'Look at it in two places.' The monk pointed to the attendant and said, 'Why doesn't the Master wear shoes?' The master said, 'This lacquer bucket (a metaphor for a foolish person).' The monk then bowed and returned to the assembly.

The master then cited the story of a heretic (a practitioner outside of Buddhism) asking the Buddha: 'Not asking about words of existence, not asking about words of non-existence.' The World Honored One (Shakyamuni Buddha) remained silent for a long time. The heretic praised, 'The World Honored One is greatly compassionate and greatly merciful, opening my clouds of delusion, allowing me to enter.' After the heretic left, Ananda (Buddha's disciple) asked the World Honored One, 'What did the heretic see, that he said allowed me to enter?' The World Honored One said, 'Like a good horse in the world, it acts upon seeing the shadow of the whip.' The master said, 'Brother Daowu said, the World Honored One's one eye sees through the three worlds (past, present, future), the heretic's two eyes penetrate the five heavens (referring to five different realms).' Brother Daowu, it's good, but it's very good at venting for the ancients. Yangqi said, 'Gold and iron cannot be distinguished, jade and stone are not differentiated.' Do you all want to understand? The World Honored One abandoned his own views and followed others, so the heretic set up a feast to celebrate and praise.' Then he tapped the staff once and shouted.

Ascending the hall to preach. 'The wondrous, perfect, all-encompassing, unmoving honored one (referring to the Buddha), the Shurangama King is rare in the world (referring to the Shurangama Sutra). Eliminating my inverted thoughts of countless eons, attaining the Dharma body without going through countless kalpas (referring to the merits of practice).' Then he picked up the staff and said, 'Staff, don't you...'


是法身。爾諸人還知么。楊岐今日向水裡倒泥里𩥇。蓋為諸人頭抵面袋裡。三十年後。明眼人前。不得錯舉。以拄杖卓一下。喝一喝。

上堂。云一切智通無障礙。遂拈起拄杖云。拄杖子。向諸人面前。逞大神通去也。遂擲下云。直得乾坤震裂。地搖六動。不見道。一切智智清凈。又拍禪床一下云。三十年後。明眼人前。莫道楊岐龍頭蛇尾。

上堂。云雷驚雨勢。萬物發生。拈起拄杖云。大眾且道。者個作么生。良久云。漁翁盡日空垂釣。收取絲綸歸去來。以拄杖卓禪床一下云。參。

上堂。僧問。師登寶座。四眾臨筵。的的西來。請師舉唱。師云。云開山嶽秀。水到四溟寬。進云。一句已蒙師指示。今日得聞于未聞。師云。腳跟下一句。作么生道。僧云。若不伸三拜。爭顯我師機。師云。更有什麼事。僧禮拜。師云。記取者僧話頭。問。先聖有八萬四千法門。門門見諦。學人為什麼。觸途成滯。師云。何得自家退屈。僧云。急切處。請師舉。師云。露柱𨁝跳。上三十三天。僧云。拈卻佛殿。去卻案山。腳跟下。去西天有多少。師云。楊岐被爾問倒。僧云。將謂無鼻孔。師云。三十年後。自家面赤。師乃云。風不鳴條。雨不破塊。此是俗漢時節。作么生是衲僧應時應節底句。遂拍禪床一下云。直待

【English Translation】 English version: This is the Dharmakaya (法身, the Dharma body of the Buddha). Do you all know this? Yangqi (楊岐, a Zen master's name) is today stirring in the water and messing in the mud, all because you people have your heads stuck in face-bags (a metaphor for being confused and upside down). Thirty years from now, in front of clear-eyed people, don't make a wrong move (referring to a wrong understanding). (Strikes the staff once) Ha! (A loud shout)

Ascending the hall to preach. Saying that all wisdom is unobstructed. Thereupon, he picked up his staff and said, 'Staff (拄杖子, referring to the staff), in front of you all, it's displaying great supernatural powers!' Then he threw down the staff and said, 'Directly shattering the universe, the earth shakes six times.' Haven't you heard? 'All wisdom is pure.' Then he slapped the Zen bed once and said, 'Thirty years from now, in front of clear-eyed people, don't say that Yangqi is a dragon's head and a snake's tail (a metaphor for starting strong but finishing weakly).'

Ascending the hall to preach. Saying that thunder startles and rain pours, and all things grow. Picking up the staff, he said, 'Everyone, tell me, what is this (者個, referring to the staff)?' After a long pause, he said, 'The fisherman spends all day fishing in vain, reeling in his line and going home.' (Strikes the Zen bed once with the staff) Chan! (參, Meditate!)

Ascending the hall to preach. A monk asked, 'The master ascends the precious seat, and the four assemblies gather here. Please, Master, reveal the true meaning of the Western Patriarchs.' The master said, 'Clouds part and mountains are beautiful; water flows wide and merges into the four seas.' The master said, 'What about the sentence beneath your feet? How do you say it?' The monk said, 'If I don't offer three bows, how can I reveal my master's sharpness?' The master said, 'Is there anything else?' The monk bowed. The master said, 'Remember this monk's topic.' Asked, 'The ancient sages had eighty-four thousand Dharma gates, and every gate leads to seeing the truth (見諦, realizing the truth). Why do I, a student, encounter obstacles everywhere?' The master said, 'How can you retreat yourself?' The monk said, 'In urgent times, please instruct me, Master.' The master said, 'The pillar (露柱, referring to a pillar in the temple) jumps and ascends to the Thirty-three Heavens (三十三天, heavens in Buddhism).' The monk said, 'Remove the Buddha hall, move away the desk mountain, from under my feet, how far is it to the Western Heaven (西天, referring to the Western Pure Land)?' The monk said: 'Fortunate to face humans and devas, I wish to see the teacher display great power.' The teacher said: 'Yangqi's (name of a Chan master) nostrils are in the hands of the Acarya (disciple).' The monk said: 'The disciple's life is in the hands of the monk (Buddhist monk).' The teacher said: 'What are you jumping around for?' The monk said: 'If you don't take the downhill path, it's hard to find a quick and convenient opportunity.' He clapped his hands once and bowed. Immediately, he struck the Zen meditation bed and said, 'The mountains and rivers, the great earth, are shattered into pieces! Return the Buddha-dharma to me!' After a long pause, he said, 'How can it compare to a gyrfalcon (a type of hawk) born in the sky of Liao, which pierces through ten thousand miles of clouds with a single swoop?'

Ascending the hall to preach, he struck the Zen meditation bed and said, 'Everyone, cut down the fishing rod and replant bamboo; don't worry about the effort, rest when it's convenient.'

Ascending the hall to preach, he said, 'In boundless Buddha-lands (ksetra), self and others are not separated by even a hair's breadth. The past and present of the ten ages are never apart from the present moment.' Immediately, he struck the Zen meditation bed and said, 'How old is Shakyamuni Buddha (Shakya Old Man)? Do you know? If you know, you are free to enter and exit heaven and earth. If you don't know, Yungai (a person's name) himself says, two thousand years of Hengsa-hakalpa (units of time).'

Ascending the hall to preach, he said, 'Grasping the universe in countless ways, how can Manjusri (Manjusri Bodhisattva) and Samantabhadra (Samantabhadra Bodhisattva) observe it? Today, I will re-annotate and decipher it for you; carefully observe Turtle-Nose Southern Mountain.' He struck the floor once with his staff.

Ascending the hall to preach, he said, 'One is all, and all is one.' Picking up his staff, he said, 'The mountains and rivers, the great earth, have been swallowed. The Buddhas of the past, the Buddhas of the future, all the old monks in the world are on the head of this staff.' Then, he drew a line with his staff and said, 'No need for a shout.'

Ascending the hall to preach, he said, 'Yungai (a person's name) issues the arrow command, with Shakyamuni Buddha (Shakya Old Man) as the vanguard and Bodhidharma (the founder of Zen Buddhism) as the rearguard. After a long pause, he said, 'Without experiencing an event, one does not gain wisdom.' Meditate!

The master said: 'The cold wind is biting, red leaves are fluttering in the sky, where did the eminent disciples of the ancestral hall depart from this morning?' Liansansheng said: 'I left Nanyuan (Nanyuan, a place name) after the morning meal.' The master said: 'What is the phrase beneath your feet?' Liansansheng slapped the sitting mat once. The master said: 'Is that all? Is there anything else?' Liansansheng made a gesture as if to withdraw. The master said: 'Please sit down and have some tea.' Two new monks arrived. The master said: 'The spring rain has just stopped, the mud is not yet dry, how do the eminent wandering monks speak of the Way?' The monk said: 'In the past, I left the ancient temple, today I have the honor to see the master's face.' The master said: 'Where did you learn these empty words?' The monk said: 'Fortunately, the abbot is a great man.' The master said: 'What is the phrase beneath your feet?' The monk slapped the sitting mat once. The master said: 'In that case, Yangqi (Yangqi, Zen Master Yangqi Fanghui) will burn incense and make offerings to you.' The monk said: 'It is difficult to deceive a discerning person.' 師訪孫比部。值判公事次。部云。下官為王事所牽。無由免離。師云。此是比部愿弘深廣利濟群生。比部云。未審如何。師云。應現宰官身。廣弘悲願深。為人重指處。棒下血霖霖。比部因頌有省。乃歸小廳。坐次卻問。下官每日持齋吃菜。還合諸聖也無。師以頌贈之。孫比部孫比部。不將酒肉污腸肚。侍僕妻兒渾不顧。釋迦老子是誰做。孫比部孫比部。

The master then turned his back and stood. The monk struck the zuju again. The master said, 'Tell me, where is the topic of conversation of Yun Gai (Yun Gai, a person's name)?' The monk said, 'Here.' The master said, 'Go and realize it yourself in thirty years. Yun Gai is in the hands of the venerable (shangzuo, a respectful term for monks), sit down and have some tea for now.' The master then asked, 'Where is summer?' The monk said, 'At Shen Ding (Shen Ding, a place name).' The master said, 'I knew earlier that the venerable came from Shen Ding, I wouldn't dare to ask presumptuously.'

The next day, the master said during Chan practice, 'Yesterday several new monks arrived and struck Yun Gai's zuju three times, as if they had realized something.' Then he brought up the previous topic and said, 'Everyone knows where Yun Gai failed. Do you all know where the new monks triumphed? If you know, come out and vent your anger for Yun Gai. If you don't know, don't speak carelessly in front of those with clear eyes.'

When giving a Dharma talk in the hall, he said, 'The myriad dharmas are originally idle, only people disturb themselves.' He tapped his staff once and said, 'Everyone, look carefully at the candle. Don't speak carelessly in front of those with clear eyes.'

The master visited Sun Bi Bu (Sun Bi Bu, an official title), just as he was handling official business. Sun Bi Bu said, 'This humble official is burdened by royal affairs and cannot escape.' The master said, 'This is because your vow, Bi Bu, is profound and vast, to benefit all living beings.' Sun Bi Bu said, 'I don't know how to say it?' The master said, 'Appearing as a government official, widely propagating profound vows of compassion. Pointing out the important places for people, blood rains down under the staff.' Sun Bi Bu had some realization because of this, so he returned to the small hall, sat down, and asked, 'This humble official observes a vegetarian diet every day, is it in accordance with the teachings of the saints?' The master gave him a verse as a gift: 'Sun Bi Bu, Sun Bi Bu, does not defile his intestines with wine and meat. He does not care about servants, wife, and children. Who made Shakyamuni Buddha? Sun Bi Bu, Sun Bi Bu.'
