My late teacher, the Venerable Huiguo (Huiguo, name of a Buddhist monk), whose secular surname was Ma, was a native of Guiming Village, Wannian County, Jingzhao Prefecture. At the young age of nine, he followed the Holy Buddha Monastery and the Venerable Tan Zhen (Tan Zhen, name of a Buddhist monk), a purple-robed Shramana who held recitations in the inner sanctum of the three emperors' national preceptor. He resolved to study the scriptures, and at the age of seventeen, as a 'cause' monk, he constantly stayed in the inner sanctum, reciting without leaving. He sought from the Tripitaka Master at Xingshan Temple the Surangama Dharani and other true words. At the age of nineteen, he was initiated and scattered flowers at the Tripitaka Master's side, obtaining the Wheel-Turning Bodhisattva. The Master said, 'I obtained this尊(zun, honorific counter for deities) by scattering flowers in South India, and now it is no different. Different from me later, propagate the all-encompassing great teachings, just like me.' Furthermore, in the eighth year of the Dali era, in the first ten days of the third month, an imperial decree ordered the establishment of an Equilateral Dharma assembly at Ci'en Temple. The Venerable of the Holy Buddha Monastery, following the imperial decree of Ci'en Temple, established the Equilateral Dharma assembly. This humble monk had two young boys, both twenty years old, who were qualified to receive the full precepts, but I dared not presumptuously ordain and shave their heads. I humbly beg for your sacred compassion to allow me to return to the monastery and ordain the two boys together, bestowing upon them robes and alms bowls. An imperial decree bestowed a knife, and in front of the Great Buddha Hall of Qinglong, the imperial decree was given to the Venerable to shave the heads of the two boys, bestowing two sets of robes and alms bowls each, and issuing an official notice to reside in the temple. The envoy and the Venerable escorted them to Ci'en Temple, and then returned to thank the imperial decree. This humble monk thanks your sacred compassion for bestowing upon the two boys the robes, alms bowls, razor, official notice, and envoy to escort them to the ordination site at Ci'en Temple's Dharma assembly. This humble monk is overwhelmed with gratitude. I will personally receive your instructions. All that I have received from my former teacher, including the bestowed gifts, I will offer entirely to the Tripiṭaka Upādhyāya, to repay your kindness in imparting the Dharma. I will frequently fast and await your teachings, and constantly recite the scriptures. At the age of twenty-five, I was specially summoned into the palace by imperial decree, to the Changsheng Hall. At that time, there was an imperial edict asking me, 'What are your effects?' I replied, 'This humble monk (a self-deprecating term) has no effects.' Upon receiving the imperial edict, I answered truthfully. At that time, the emperor summoned eight boys to test my ability to bestow blessings. All that was asked by the imperial command, I accomplished, turning bottles and joining bamboo (referring to certain magical arts), and all were successful. The emperor was greatly pleased. In the tenth year of the Dali era, at the temple, the emperor specially bestowed a courtyard in the East Pagoda, establishing a Vairocana (光明遍照) Abhiṣeka (灌頂) Maṇḍala (道場), with seven monks chanting. In the eleventh year of the Dali era, I blessed Emperor Daizong, and he recovered immediately. The emperor bestowed a pair of purple robes. I verbally requested not to accept them, but then presented them. The emperor said, 'I have already bestowed the purple robes upon you, why do you not accept them?' I replied, 'A humble monk like myself is overwhelmed by the bestowal of purple robes.' I should have accepted them immediately, but considering that the Upādhyāya had previously been bestowed purple robes by the late emperor, I, as a disciple, should not be on par with my teacher. The emperor said, 'The teacher is truly filial, it is my mistake.' The emperor decreed, 'Even those of different surnames and sects are able to uphold filial piety, from now on, you are worthy of being a national preceptor.' Thus, he bestowed a pair of brown robes. I, upon the emperor's decree, blessed Princess Huayang, and she recovered in three days. Later, between the hours of Shen and Wei, the princess suddenly became mute. The emperor and the palace attendants all came forward. I, the Upādhyāya, requested, 'The weather is hot, I hope that Your Majesty and the palace attendants will temporarily leave, and I will bless the princess, and she will recover.' The princess then recovered, and her speech was clear. The emperor was greatly pleased, and bestowed one hundred bolts of silk and a pair of robes, to thank the imperial decree. By the seventeenth day of the first month of the first year of Yuanhe, approximately over a thousand disciples and followers held a funeral procession to the side of the Longyuan Master's Pagoda in Meng Village. Later, on the twenty-first day of the eighth month of the second year of Baoli, Yi Yi, Shen Da, and Yi Dan, beside the Chan River, at Biao Lin Village, built a pagoda and moved (his remains) for burial.
