【English Translation】 English version I have been compiling and studying the works of Zheng Hui (證慧), spending much time in research and contemplation, but have not been able to complete everything. The completed works amount to fifty-eight volumes, named 'Mahābodhisattvapiṭaka Sūtra' (大菩薩藏經) in twenty volumes, 'Buddhabhūmi Sūtra' (佛地經) in one volume, 'Six-Door Dhāraṇī Sūtra' (六門陀羅尼經) in one volume, 'Śāsanoddhāraka-śāstra' (顯揚聖教論) in twenty volumes, and 'Mahāyānābhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā' (大乘阿毗達磨雜集論) in sixteen volumes. These have been arranged into eight cases, and copied separately. Along with the previous Śāriputra (舍利佛) image and Sanskrit texts of sūtras and śāstras, I respectfully present them to the imperial court. However, with Your Majesty's profound insight and the depth of the profound words, my knowledge is neither deep nor hidden, and my understanding lacks the ability to praise and integrate. How can I live up to the expectations of the Emperor and respectfully promote the supreme teachings? It is like a faint spark trying to shine against a grand landscape, or a small stream gathering into a vast valley to form a magnificent scene. Following Your Majesty, I feel ashamed and tremble, as if walking in an icy valley. I respectfully submit this memorial.
Thirteenth day of the seventh month of the twentieth year of the Zhenguan (貞觀) era. The śramaṇa Xuanzang (玄奘) respectfully presents.
Memorial on Presenting the 'Records of the Western Regions'
The śramaṇa Xuanzang (玄奘) reports: Panmu Youling (蟠木幽陵) is the territory of Xuanyuan Huangdi (軒轅黃帝) recorded by the cloud officials, and the shifting sands and vast seas are the lands of Yi and Yao (伊堯) recorded in the Xia dynasty classics. The Western Qiang (西羌) offered tribute after the era of 'ruling by hanging down robes', and the Eastern Yi (東夷) presented gifts to the ruler who implemented 'governance without punishment'. Indeed, these are the glories of past eras, and the decline of previous dynasties. I respectfully think that Your Majesty grasps the times, governs all things, and uses the wisdom of 'hollowing out boats and stringing wood' to awe the world and save all beings; uses the feet of Ao (鰲) and the ashes of reeds to fill the square earth and repair the round sky. You display martial prowess in the Seven Virtues and elucidate culture and education in the Ten Relationships. The abundant grace flows like a spring, and the teachings benefit even the humblest like the Artemisia selengensis. The Ganoderma lucidum sprouts and blossoms, and the well water surges and shines. The pleasure garden tames all beasts, and the palace echoes with music. Purple ointment is offered in humble palaces, and white clouds float on exquisite scrolls. Thus, places like Yuan Ruo (苑若) have overflowing ponds, and places like Pei (霈) have blazing fires illuminating accumulated ice. Climbing the Red Slope (赤坂) to receive the northern tribute, and sailing the Blue Ford (蒼津) to present offerings. Such historical events are unprecedented, and such achievements are unrecorded in past treasuries. How can this be compared to the Han dynasty's Zhangye (張掖) pass, which was only close to Jincheng (金城), or the Qin dynasty's garrison in Guilin (桂林), which could only reach Zhupu (珠浦)? Xuanzang (玄奘) is fortunate to be born in an era of clear skies and peaceful earth, the Zhenguan (貞觀) prosperity, and the tranquility of both Chinese and foreign lands. With a mind devoted to the Brahma realm, I dare to pursue beautiful things. My life is as short as the morning dew, and my strength is as weak as the autumn cicada, but I wish to rely on the blessings of the Emperor and the support of my humble efforts to travel far and wide, seeking the Dharma from near to far. Wandering in foreign lands of prostration, drifting in layers of...

【English Translation】 English version: The conditions of countries such as Tiao-chih (條支) and Chu-chiue (巨雀) have verified the rumors I heard before; the deeds of the solitary Luan (孤鸞) in Chi-pin (罽賓) have also confirmed the facts I knew in the past. Time has passed and years have accumulated, and the changes in human affairs have followed the will of heaven. Therefore, I was able to come down from the top of the snow mountain, cross the Ti River (提河) by boat, leave the Crane Forest (鶴林), and go to the Vulture Peak (鷲嶺). The road to Jetavana (祇園) is still faintly visible even though it is empty; the site of Rajagriha (王舍城), Mount Gijjhakuta (婆陀) can still be climbed. I traveled around searching and visiting, and time passed. It has been almost twenty years since I returned to the imperial capital Chang'an (帝京). I have seen and heard about 138 countries. I privately think that what Zhang Hai (章亥) measured only vaguely stated the vastness; what Kua Fu (夸父) experienced did not describe the local customs and conditions. Although Ban Chao's (班超) achievements were remarkable, they were not far-reaching enough; although Zhang Qian's (張騫) exploration was valuable, it was not extensive enough. Only what Xuanzang (玄奘) recorded can be considered relatively detailed and complete. Most of the pedantic words and exaggerated statements have been deleted by me, and compiled into 'The Great Tang Records on the Western Regions' in twelve volumes, which have been copied and presented separately. Xuanzang is dull and not good at editing facts. I hope that Your Majesty can embellish it with your pen, decorate it with exquisite words, delete the messy words, and adopt the true records to highlight the merits of the hundred kings and conform to the status of the Nine Hills (九丘) in the imperial dynasty. I hope that the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas' (山海經) can hide its brilliance, and the 'Bamboo Annals' (汲冢瑣語) can conceal its splendor. I am really extremely apprehensive. I hereby present it to the court, and the slight dust offends your crown, and I feel deeply frightened and uneasy. I respectfully say. The Shramana Xuanzang (沙門玄奘) respectfully reports: Xuanzang entered Buddhism early and was fortunate to catch up with a prosperous era. I hope to hear the highest Dharma and study Buddhism with my heart. I often regret that the scriptures left by the Buddha's perfect enlightenment are not detailed and complete, so I yearn for it with admiration and travel all over the place. The distant journey depends on the emperor's prestige, and what I expect can be realized. In February of last year, I was ordered by the emperor to translate Buddhist scriptures. Now I have completed five parts, a total of fifty-eight volumes, which have been copied and presented separately. I privately saw that the Buddha statue in Hongfu Temple (弘福寺) has just been completed, and the emperor personally came to open the eyes of the blue lotus. Now that the new scriptures have been translated, I dare to take this opportunity to ask Your Majesty to condescend to bestow sacred ink, write the titles for the scriptures, and personally write exquisite articles to clarify the fundamental purpose of Buddhism. I hope that your articles can be as profound as astronomy and as bright as the sun and the moon, and your calligraphy can be as precious as gold and jade and as stable as heaven and earth. I hope that future generations will sing your praises endlessly, and people will admire your kindness forever. I am really extremely apprehensive. I hereby present this memorial, and the slight offense to the heavenly majesty makes me even more frightened and uneasy. I respectfully say.

【English Translation】 English version: It's not just the ordinary Brahma assembly; I alone bear the Emperor's grace and honor. Even the ignorant and confused beings can transcend the burdens of the world. With utmost sincerity, I venture to the palace to present a memorial to report this matter. Slightly disturbing the heavenly majesty, I am deeply trembling with fear. I respectfully submit.
Memorial of Thanks for Receiving the Kasaya and Razor
The Shramana Xuanzang reports: I respectfully received the imperial decree, bestowing a kasaya (robe) and a razor made of fine iron. The imperial grace descends like clouds and rain, and I, Xuanzang, am fortunate to receive this profound favor. The Emperor's glory and command are so grand and profound that I am truly shocked and overwhelmed. Xuanzang is fortunate to be born in an era of enlightened civilization, and has long joined the ranks of monks who cultivate their minds. However, my three karmas (body, speech, and mind) have no discipline, and I have no way to repay the fourfold kindness. The Emperor has not forgotten me, and grace and honor descend upon me. This kasaya, symbolizing forbearance, has colors like flowing rosy clouds; this razor, symbolizing wisdom, is sharper than cutting jade. I will respectfully wear the kasaya to subdue the demons of affliction, and wield the razor to sever the nets of worldly troubles. I worry that others will criticize me for this, and I also fear that my talent is empty and I will fail to live up to the imperial grace. Receiving such special treatment, I feel ashamed and uneasy, and I am overwhelmed with fear and gratitude. I respectfully submit this memorial to express my gratitude and report to the Emperor. If my memorial offends the heavenly countenance, I am deeply trembling with fear. I respectfully submit.
Memorial of Thanks for Emperor Taizong's Preface to the Sacred Teachings of the Tripitaka
The Shramana Xuanzang reports: I have heard that the deductions of the six lines of the Book of Changes are limited to the realm of birth and death; the correct naming of all things has not yet touched the realm of true suchness. Even so, people still believe that those profound books contain immeasurable mysteries. I imagine that the ancient books, after generations of selection, ultimately all return to the principles of righteousness. I respectfully believe that Your Majesty is the descent of a jade hair, ruling the world with a golden wheel. You have expanded the territory of the Nine Provinces of the former kings, overshadowing countless suns and moons. You have opened up areas that previous emperors could not reach, and encompassed the worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. Thus, the Jetavana Vihara (Jetavana Vihara) has been incorporated into your territory, and the spiritual texts on the palm-leaf scriptures (Palm-leaf scriptures) have been included in your collection. In the past, because I was holding a staff, I ventured to visit Grdhrakuta (Grdhrakuta). Traveling tens of thousands of miles, relying on the Emperor's majesty, it was as if I were nearby. Without riding a thousand-petaled lotus, arriving at the Twin Sal Trees (Twin Sal Trees) was like an instant. I collected and promoted the Tripitaka (Tripitaka), exhausting the treasures of the Naga Palace (Naga Palace). I studied the Ekayana (Ekayana), exhausting the teachings left behind by Grdhrakuta (Grdhrakuta). These have already been recorded on white silk and presented to the Imperial Palace (Imperial Palace). Soon after, I received an imperial decree, granting me the task of translating the Buddhist scriptures. Xuanzang's knowledge is not as good as Nagarjuna (Nagarjuna), but I am honored to be in the glory of transmitting the lamp; my talent is not as good as Asvaghosa (Asvaghosa), and I am deeply ashamed of the quickness of writing. The translated scriptures and treatises have many errors, so I received the Emperor's grace, paying attention to

【English Translation】 English version:
Preface: The writing transcends the constraints of mere appearances. Like the sun emitting a thousand rays of light, the principle encompasses the gateway to all mysteries, like the Dharma cloud moistening all kinds of plants. To expound with one sound is rarely encountered in countless eons. I suddenly, in my humble existence, personally heard the sacred sound, leaping with joy as if I had received a prophecy. My joy and gratitude are beyond measure. I respectfully present this memorial, going to the court to express my gratitude, to inform the Emperor. Sincerely.
Emperor Taizong's Reply to Dharma Master Xuanzang's Memorial of Thanks, Imperial Edict:
My talent is not as beautiful as jade, and my words are ashamed of being not broad and knowledgeable enough. As for the inner scriptures, especially those I am not familiar with. The preface I wrote yesterday was very crude and clumsy, and I was afraid that it would tarnish the ink on the golden slips, and place rubble in the forest of pearls. Suddenly receiving your letter, I was wrongly praised and complimented, and I reflected on myself, feeling even more ashamed. My good deeds are not worth mentioning, and you have troubled yourself to thank me in vain.
Letter of Thanks for 'Record of Elucidating the Sage':
Disciple Xuanzang reports: I humbly believe that few recognize the truth, and they often suffer on the road to the East; many are confused about the direction, and they jointly rely on the guidance of the south-pointing chariot. Moreover, the Great Path is profound and distant, and the wonderful gate is empty and silent. If not for relying on sagacious wisdom, who can interpret and narrate it? I respectfully think of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, inheriting the Emperor's supreme position, with benevolence spreading in all directions, illuminating the Buddha's sun to make it shine again, and inheriting the Dharma wheel to prevent it from declining. The ferry has a destination, and the transmission of the lamp is here. Xuanzang is determined to exhaust the Buddha's path, vowing to sacrifice his life. Starting from the East, I wish to go to the West to seek the Dharma. Relying on the protection of the imperial spirit, I obtained 657 scriptures and treatises. Soon I received the Emperor's grace, ordering Xuanzang to translate them. Thus, a compassionate decree was issued, creating a preface for me. Spreading the compassionate clouds over the dusty world, and showering the rain of grace on the realms of sand. Your Highness is proficient in the Three Baskets (Tipiṭaka), promoting the Ten Virtues, and also creating the 'Record of Elucidating the Sage', glorifying and elucidating the Great Path of the Buddha, clarifying the gate of true reality, so that there is existence without attachment to existence, discussing the realm of emptiness and silence, so that emptiness is also not nothing. Still able to obtain divine understanding, far surpassing the constraints of appearances. Xuanzang has not yet clarified the turbid water, but suddenly obtained a bright pearl. I will certainly respectfully uphold it, and forever take it as a mirror in my heart. My heart is filled with awe and gratitude. I respectfully present this letter, expressing my gratitude, to inform Your Highness. Sincerely.
The Emperor's Daily Reply to Dharma Master Xuanzang's Letter of Thanks from the Spring Palace:
I have always lacked talent and am not naturally intelligent.

【English Translation】 English version: I (referring to the author) have not perused the works of the various Manjushri Bodhisattvas in the inner canon. The prefaces to my own treatises are shallow, clumsy, and excessively verbose. Suddenly, I received a letter filled with praise and commendation. Reflecting on myself, I am filled with both shame and trepidation. Moreover, I am deeply ashamed that I have troubled you (referring to Dharma Master Xuanzang) to come from afar. (From a letter to Dharma Master Xuanzang)
Letter from Emperor Taizong to the Long-lived Brahmin and Dharma Master Xuanzang:
The Creator molds all things, granting different lifespans. Heaven and earth cover and support everything, the foolish and the wise coexist. From this, we know that the most sage and virtuous people exist in every era. However, previous emperors rarely encountered such individuals. I (referring to Emperor Taizong) consider myself to have shallow virtue, frivolous conduct, meager wisdom, and weak strength. Fortunately, due to past karmic connections, I am fortunate to encounter a true person (referring to the Long-lived Brahmin) in this life. Your medicine has arrived, and my limbs gradually feel lighter. I will be even more cautious in my recuperation, hoping to fully recover. I caress my weary body and feel joy, and I am ashamed for the divine medicine. I can only entrust my life to the subsequent medications, hoping to extend my lifespan. I hope to transcend the fleeting lifespan of the world and exist forever, maintaining a youthful appearance without decay. May the hair that has turned white revert to black, and may the body that has aged regain health and strength. Can this wish be fulfilled? I will exert my utmost sincerity and respectfully await your excellent remedies.

Dharma Master Xuanzang's Memorial Requesting the Circulation of Sutras and Treatises:
The Shramana Xuanzang reports: I humbly believe that the profound Dharma has no premonition, relying on the teachings of Confucianism to impart instructions; the essence of the Dharma is non-action, relying on words and images to accomplish transformation. From this, we know that those who interpret Confucianism are the skillful means of the Dharma King, and those who expound on words and images are the abilities of the sage emperor. If one does not possess the wisdom of the Three Insights, have broad knowledge, and universally save sentient beings with the Four Great Vows, who can promote the turning of the Golden Wheel and propagate the teachings of the Jade Hair? I humbly believe that Your Majesty the Emperor emulates the state of Qi, governing the world with the way of the sages, admiring the virtuous and practicing it personally. Eradicating the frivolous and decadent customs, imparting harmonious and peaceful teachings. Customs and teachings spread throughout the three thousand great chiliocosms, and the territory covers hundreds of millions of lands. Handling the eight affairs of state and traveling by carriage, driving the five vehicles of Buddhism and galloping forward. Condescending to the status of a person beyond the mundane world, residing in the position of the ruler within the realm. The four seas are peaceful and without incident, and the myriad affairs of state have leisure. Collecting the treasures of wisdom in the Unicorn Pavilion, drawing the sweet dew of wisdom in the Dragon Palace. I, Xuanzang, have shallow learning and insufficient knowledge, ashamed of examining ancient texts. Respectfully accepting Your Majesty's decree, translating Sanskrit scriptures in detail. Inwardly concerned about my mediocrity and foolishness, fearing to violate the profound principles of the Dharma. Deeply considering my sincerity, I fear that it will erode the great undertaking.

【English Translation】 English version: Therefore, (we) dare not slacken day and night, and our body and mind dare not be lazy. The emperor's teachings cover (everything), without a single erroneous statement; the blessings of the spirits reach and can resonate with everyone's heart. The emperor's wisdom is like the bright sun, illuminating the distance of three 'she' (an ancient unit of distance); the sincere heart moves the nine layers of heaven. Therefore, (the emperor) condescends to clarify the sacred teachings. The words are as towering as mountain peaks, already shaking the palace of Shakyamuni; the righteousness is as vast as the sea, about to move the request of the Brahma King. Therefore, the great teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha are illuminated and proclaimed by the emperor's sacred literary talent; the subtle words of Prajna are illuminated and elucidated by the emperor's wise decisions. However, remote villages have never heard the sound of Buddhist scriptures; remote and desolate places, how can they see the magnificence of astronomy? (We) hope to preface the translated scriptures with the imperially composed 'Preface to the Sacred Teachings of the Tripitaka' and the Crown Prince's 'Record of the Sacred,' and announce them to all places, far and near, so that everyone can hear and know. Each major prefecture and famous state should donate a copy, so that the Buddhist path will not be promoted in vain, and the Dharma will not be滯留 (zhiliu: stagnate). The clouds of wisdom will spread to distant places, and the rain of Dharma will shower both at home and abroad. The emperor's spirit will enjoy the blessings of propagating the Dharma, forever without end; the people will enjoy the benefits of the Dharma's wealth, generation after generation without omission. With utmost sincerity, we respectfully submit this memorial to present our request, hoping to reach the emperor's ears. May the emperor's compassion have mercy and allow (us), and may our humble words, like light dust, be heard and reviewed by you. Recalling the past, we feel even more trembling and ashamed. Sincerely.
A Memorial from the Monk Xuanzang to the Eastern Palace Regarding the Writing of the 'Record of the Sacred'
The monk Xuanzang reports: The imperial envoy has arrived, and I respectfully accept your clear order to personally come to this humble place and write the 'Record of the Sacred.' This is your great favor to me, and the favor extends to this insignificant person. I respectfully accept your order, and my heart is filled with fear and trepidation. I privately believe that the sun and moon move in the sky, and their light illuminates everything; sages and virtuous people expound teachings, and they can only be promoted when they encounter resonance. Therefore, true teachings can only be promoted in enlightened times, and great teachings can only flourish in prosperous times. If it were not for the blessings of Your Majesty, how could they be spread to remote and desolate places? If it were not for your all-encompassing wisdom, how could you illuminate the darkness and ignorance? I respectfully believe that His Royal Highness the Crown Prince contains the sacred water of wisdom, washes away the mysteries of nature, relies on the auspicious clouds of Emperor Yao, inherits the light and makes it even brighter. Your career is bestowed by heaven, your learning penetrates the mysteries of the Three Vehicles of Buddhism, your Tao is comparable to those who are born knowing, and your talent encompasses the agility of the four kinds of eloquence. As for creating paintings and displaying deeds, you exquisitely exhaust the mysteries of various calligraphies; analyzing classics and distinguishing aspirations, the righteousness integrates various categories. The brushstrokes are as ethereal as clouds, and the words are as dense as fog. Holding the brush can transform the images of the six lines of the 'I Ching', and wielding the brush can illuminate the brilliance of the sun, moon, and stars.

English version:
A Memorial of Gratitude for the Gift of the Bodhisattvapiṭaka Sūtra, etc.
Śramaṇa (Buddhist monk) Xuanzang (602-664) respectfully submits this memorial. The imperial envoy (zhongshi) personally arrived, bringing with him the grand and generous command. I reverently received the one scroll of the Six-Door Dhāraṇī Sūtra written in divine calligraphy, as well as the sixty-six scrolls titled Mahābodhisattvapiṭaka Sūtra (The Great Bodhisattva Collection Sutra), etc. Such extraordinary favor has suddenly descended upon me, causing me to feel apprehensive and deeply ashamed. The light of this benevolence shines upon me, filling me with joy as if ascending to a great height. I humbly believe that the supreme teachings are so subtle and profound, their principles beyond the realm of the tangible; the profound chapters are so serene and lofty, their doctrines elucidated between words and images. Manifestation or concealment follows the times; action or retreat depends on destiny. If not for being in an era of pure and harmonious transformation, how could one propagate such profound and abstruse teachings?
I respectfully think of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, whose virtue is as lofty as heaven and earth, whose righteousness illuminates all directions. The Three Powers (Heaven, Earth, and Humanity) reside in your heart, and the myriad nations look up to you. You spread the clouds of wisdom, sheltering the burning house (of suffering); you strike the drum of Dharma, awakening those lost in the dark paths. We are all bathed in your vast grace, transcending the mundane and attaining salvation. How can the sincerity of mere paper and ink express my gratitude? Even with a vow to sacrifice my life, I still feel ashamed. This is truly the gathering of auspiciousness, symbolizing that the imperial destiny will forever govern the golden wheel (of power); blessings nourish the sacred goodness, foretelling your swift attainment of the position adorned with the ūrṇa (a mark of the Buddha). I, Xuanzang, reflect upon my own mediocrity and shallowness, my limited knowledge, and my undeserved receipt of such great honor. I am filled with boundless joy and respectfully present this memorial, expressing my gratitude. I hope you can spare some time to glance through it. I am filled with trepidation. Respectfully submitted.
A Memorial from Dharma Master Xuanzang Requesting to Send Accompanying Items and a Letter to the Western Regions
Śramaṇa Xuanzang states: I have heard that when the Dharma (universal law) flourishes, its merit is profound and its teachings spread widely; when virtue stabilizes both within and without, it brings reverence to those nearby and peace to those far away. Therefore, we emulate the teachings of Heaven and cultivate transformations that accord with the land. This is truly the grand principle for governing all things, the great model for ruling the world! I respectfully think of His Majesty the Emperor, who possesses the brilliant wisdom bestowed by Heaven and the profound virtue as vast as the Earth. You judge and evaluate all things, illuminating and elucidating the principles of human relations. Regions with left-fastening garments (referring to non-Han peoples) come to offer tribute after multiple translations; peoples with unintelligible languages request the establishment of officials to change their linguistic customs. If not for virtue that penetrates the divine and benevolence that extends to the hidden realms, how could the mists be dispelled, the multiple obstacles removed, and the winds sweep away the dust from the distant lands? I, Xuanzang, in the past relied on the Emperor's power to seek the Dharma in distant lands. I respectfully followed the Buddha's teachings and devoted myself to studying Sanskrit scriptures. I extensively investigated the origins of names and forms, and inquired into the principles of skillful means and ultimate truth. Now I have returned to translate the scriptures, making them conform to the profound teachings. I am deeply grateful for the Emperor's grace, which allows me to re-elucidate the Dharma of Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak, where the Buddha preached).

【English Translation】 English version: Reverently following the Buddha's teachings, I once again expound the canons of the Dragon Palace. Quietly elucidating the doctrines, the merit accrues to those nearby. Exploring profound principles, I sincerely rely on enlightened guidance. Comprehending the flavor of non-action, I deeply receive the Emperor's great favor. Not daring to be ungrateful for the Emperor's profound kindness, I fear neglecting the Emperor's transformative influence. Xuanzang (Buddhist monk) initially returned to the country, and since then, all monks have been deeply delighted to seek the Dharma. Pitying their worn-out clothes, I have slightly bestowed some monastic robes. Now, there are three kasayas (袈裟, monastic robes), and ten bolts of silk damask bestowed by the Emperor. I have sought and obtained embroidered banners and various offering implements from various temples, and I have attached a detailed list. I respectfully greet my teachers and friends, and I earnestly request that these items be sent to India (天竺, India) with this envoy. I hope that by relying on these items, I can express my gratitude for the Emperor's profound kindness, thereby glorifying the nation's virtue of benevolence and righteousness, and expressing my foolish and shallow intentions. With a heart full of gratitude, I respectfully submit this memorial to present my request, hoping that it will reach the Emperor's ears. I humbly pray that the Emperor's compassion will be especially granted. I respectfully submit.
A five-character poem, composed in the evening while passing by a temple, still expressing my feelings (composed by the Emperor when he passed by the room of Dharma Master Xuanzang (玄奘法師) at the Great Ci'en Temple (大慈恩寺) while he was still the Crown Prince)
I stop my carriage to view this blessed hall, my eyes gaze upon the imperial throne. The wheel of Dharma contains the sun's rotation, the flowered canopy connects with the flying clouds. Emerald smoke permeates the fragrant pavilion, scarlet clouds illuminate the precious monastic robes. The colorful banners, like rainbows, remotely contain their brilliance, the sky and water distinctly shine with different radiance. I leisurely ascend to the tenth bhumi (十地, tenth stage of Bodhisattva), naturally comprehending the true meaning of taking refuge in the Three Jewels (三歸).
Memorial Presenting Sutras
The Shramana (沙門, Buddhist monk) Xuanzang (玄奘) reports: The aforementioned sutras and precepts are indeed the key to inspiring practice, the bridge for crossing the sea of suffering. Reciting these sutras and hearing their names will bring immeasurable blessings. I hope that they can secretly assist in forever protecting the Emperor's sacred body in good health. I respectfully present these, feeling even more apprehensive and uneasy. I respectfully submit.
Memorial Requesting Sanskrit Texts
The Shramana (沙門, Buddhist monk) Xuanzang (玄奘) reports: The aforementioned sutras and vinayas (經律) are all the guidelines for the practice of the Five Vehicles (五乘), and the profound essence of the Tripitaka (三藏). Because the meaning of the texts is both vast and profound, the disciples greatly admire and revere them. Xuanzang (玄奘) went to the Western Regions (西域) to widely seek out the remaining texts, and he obtained more than six hundred various sutras, but the aforementioned sutras and vinayas (經律) have not yet been obtained. Concerning the widespread dissemination of the Dharma, some content is still unclear. Now, these sutras and vinayas (經律) are all completely preserved in Khotan (于闐國). I respectfully hope that Your Majesty, with your heaven-like position, will initiate great undertakings, receive the mandate of heaven, and propagate the true Dharma. Distant countries and different races are translating scriptures and coming to pay tribute. The king of Khotan (于闐) has now also submitted to Your Majesty's teachings. I humbly

Emperor's Flying White Script (a calligraphic style) of Eighteen Characters to Dharma Master Xuanzang: The Master is old, the weather is hot, this place is small and narrow, how is your health? Have the scriptures been translated? By imperial order.
Memorial Thanking for the Granting of All Sutras: The Shramana Xuanzang reports: I have explored the Tripitaka (three collections of Buddhist texts) teachings, which are truly a precious mirror illuminating delusion, a boat sailing out of the sea of love, a good cause for entering pure wisdom, and a wonderful path towards Bodhi (enlightenment). Therefore, burning incense and breaking bones are used to demonstrate the sincerity of seeking the Dharma (Buddhist teachings); sacrificing oneself on the snowy mountains is to express the joy of hearing the scriptures. I respectfully think of His Majesty the Emperor, who governs the world with the golden wheel, the teachings of the Ten Virtues are renewed daily; who rules the world with literary virtue, the customs of the Eightfold Path are increasingly prevalent. Even though affairs of state are vast, your practice of Dana (generosity) has not diminished; even though affairs are numerous, your mind devoted to profound Buddhist principles has not been abandoned. Previously, you issued a clear edict to send people to create all the sutras, wanting to record the golden words on white silk, not only in the Crane Grove (Jetavana); opening the jade palace above the frost snails (referring to Buddhist temples), not only in the Deer Park (Sarnath). Using sandalwood to make the axes of the scriptures, covering the fragrance of the Champak flower; using embroidered silk to tailor the covers of the scriptures, surpassing the colors of the bright clouds. Solemn and respectful, everything is subtle. Sending Wang Junde to arrive, again proclaiming the heavenly grace, pitying Xuanzang's ignorance, allowing me to enter the Dragon Palace, granting me to stay and read. Thus, the sweet dew-like supreme Dharma, mistakenly touched my humble door; Mani divine pearls, reluctantly gathered in my snail-like humble abode. I gratefully accept with joy, not knowing how to describe it. I respectfully burn incense and scatter flowers, uphold and recite the scriptures. May the merits generated adorn Your Majesty, be as bright as the sun and moon, as long-lived as heaven and earth, may your teachings spread throughout the three thousand great chiliocosms, and your Dao (path) encompass beyond the universe. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and joy. I respectfully attach this memorial to express my thanks. Paper and ink are easily exhausted, but expressing your kindness is difficult to exhaust. Respectfully reported.
Memorial Thanking for Permission to Compose the Inscription for the Great Ci'en Temple and for Obtaining the Assistance of the Prime Ministers in Translating the Scriptures: The Shramana Xuanzang reports: On the 24th day of this month, the Inner Attendant Wang Junde conveyed the oral edict, allowing the establishment of an inscription for the temple pagoda, and dispatching the Left Minister Yu Zhining, the Chancellor Lai Ji, the Minister of Rites Xu Jingzong, the Yellow Gate Attendant...

【English Translation】 English version: Lang Xue Yuanchao, Du Zhenglun, Libu Vice Minister Li Yifu, Guozixue Professor Fan Yun, and other scholars jointly translated the scriptures. The Emperor's grace flowed silently, and the profound teachings were widely propagated. We respectfully received the Emperor's compassionate edict, filled with both joy and awe. All monks rejoiced in this. Xuanzang heard that the Emperor's virtue was boundless and his divine achievements were immeasurable. Since he had elucidated the teachings of 'non-action' (wuwei), he would surely open the door to all mysteries. Since the Great Master (referring to Śākyamuni Buddha) renounced the world and the Capable One (another name for Śākyamuni Buddha) no longer resided in it, only the shadow remained on Vulture Peak (Gṛdhrakūṭa, where Śākyamuni Buddha preached), and the teachings of the Buddha's image were transmitted in vain. The śāla trees (where Śākyamuni Buddha entered Nirvana) were silent, and the subtle words were indeed bestowed. If it were not for the Emperor's brilliant wisdom and sagacious governance, saving the four types of beings (sattva, referring to beings born from eggs, wombs, moisture, and transformation), and his wisdom encompassing the three realms (trailokya, referring to the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm), how could he concentrate his thoughts on the realm of profound mystery, pursue the path of great enlightenment, guide the weary merchants to the city of transformation (an illusory city, a metaphor for Nirvana), and rescue the lost children from the dangerous dwelling? I respectfully think that His Majesty the Emperor upholds the Way of Heaven, inherits the great cause, seizes the opportune time, nurtures the three powers of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, and transforms all things. He brings peace to the distant lands and tranquility to the near ones, ensuring peace throughout the realm and clear waters in the rivers. The plants and trees flourish, and the clouds and mists display beautiful colors. The Emperor is serene and enjoys much happiness, thinking of the literary officials, governing the country with the guidance of the Three Mysteries (referring to the 'Laozi', 'Zhuangzi', and 'Zhouyi'), and his literary skills are superb, reaching the level of the Seven Weft Books (ancient apocryphal texts). Moreover, he mostly uses the wonderful scriptures of Śākyamuni Buddha to propagate salvation, cherishing the desire to promote Buddhism and humbly offering praise. He intends to personally compose sacred writings to expound the profound Dharma. He specially summoned the talents of the court to proclaim the wonderful Dharma. The teachings of the Buddha's image have been transmitted to the East for more than five hundred years, and although the tenets of the Dharma have been widely expounded, it has gone through many dynasties, but the glory of praising the Dharma is unique to this day. Gods and humans rejoice together, and the deities bestow blessings. The Golden Wheel (cakra, a metaphor for the Dharma) continues to turn, and the Jade Calendar (referring to the imperial dynasty's reign) will last forever. Thus, the brilliant literary talent of the Han Emperor was only expressed in vain by the Fen River, and the extraordinary talent of the Wei Emperor was only used to write poems in the Wu and Kuaiji regions. No one has been able to muster this great literary power to praise the profound Dharma, making the sound resound throughout the three realms (trailokya, referring to the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm) and spreading grace across the six paths (ṣaṭ-gati, referring to hell, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, humans, and gods). This will surely enable the bright sun of wisdom to shine even brighter with the help of the Emperor's writings, and enable ignorant beings to understand the Buddha's path by seeing the Emperor's articles. Xuanzang is fortunate to have encountered this auspicious era and to have been ordained early in life. His virtue is ashamed before the monastic community, and his learning is inferior to that of Fa Lan (a monk's name). He has repeatedly received the Emperor's special favor, and he often feels alarmed and uneasy. He once again respectfully accepts the Emperor's kindness and feels even more apprehensive. He is truly unable to bear this profound kindness and hereby goes to the palace to present a memorial, stating his gratitude. Respectfully.

【English Translation】 English version: Having conceived the Xia dynasty and annexed the Yin dynasty, (the Dharma) expounds numerous profound principles to enlighten the world, encompassing various talents to beautify customs. Within the nine realms, people have already bathed in the wind of benevolence, and beyond the four heavens, they have also been touched by the profound transformation. Therefore, (the Dharma), as a bridge to cross the sea of suffering, cannot have its source elucidated by anyone less than the most sacred; the merit of profound praise cannot have its deeds elaborated by anyone less than the greatest. Even the utmost that can be achieved by remembering the ancients will naturally move Heaven; moreover, the blessings in the unseen can be prayed for, and the emperor's favor can be turned back. The emperor's brilliant words are widely bestowed, already surpassing rare treasures; the hidden deeds begin to manifest, surpassing priceless jewels. All beings in the world are delighted to embrace them. Those who believe in Brahmanism are even more joyful, as if dreaming of the heavenly music, returning to this world is not strange; obtaining the crown jewel of the Chakravartin, what can be more precious? It is hoped that (these merits) will be engraved on steadfast stone, to establish a blessed sanctuary. Opening the eyes and ears of those ignorant beings, the great Dharma torch will be passed on to the future. May those who gaze upon the precious words stand on tiptoe to look up at the silver stupa, and from this day forth, generate Bodhicitta, recite the remaining texts, explore their mysteries, and awaken to Prajna wisdom in this place. Even if the city of kalpas turns into dust, the bright beauty will always remain; even if the sea changes into mulberry fields, the beautiful customs will not decay. I, Xuanzang, am of humble origin, and have always been ashamed of my practice. Since I have received ordination, I want to promote the profound Dharma. Going to Kapilavastu, I originally relied on the emperor's grace. Now that I am translating scriptures, I am again receiving the court's reward. During the Zhenguan era, I was excessively blessed by the emperor's great compassion; since the Yonghui era, I have been even more disturbed by special favors. The divine pens of the two emperors humbly bestowed praise; the sacred writings of the two dynasties bestowed glorious adornment in letters. Considering my foolishness and inferiority, I am truly filled with fear. The sincerity of repaying kindness, I dare not forget morning and night. It is only because the kindness is as deep as a mountain, how can a drop of water repay it? Even if it is as high as Mount Song and Mount Tai, it cannot be repaid by fine dust. I can only rely on the wisdom power of all Buddhas, use boundless methods, use the beautiful social customs to support the gardens and temples, and help the foundation of the temples to be more stable, reaching seven hundred. I really cannot bear such lofty kindness, and I respectfully present the memorial presented by the inner servant Wang Junde, stating my gratitude, to report to the emperor. Offending the emperor's majesty, I feel deeply terrified. I respectfully say. Shramana Xuanzang reports: On the fourteenth day of this month, I respectfully received the imperial decree, sending the inscription for the Great Ci'en Temple written by the emperor himself, and arranging for the Nine-Part Music to be offered.

English version: Humbly submitted.
Memorial Expressing Gratitude for Allowing the Monks Shanluo, etc., to Re-Ordain
The śrāmaṇa (monk) Xuanzang (name of the translator, 602-664) says: I, Xuanzang, have received the Emperor's (Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty) decree allowing Shanluo (name of a monk) and others to re-ordain as monks, and I am overjoyed and deeply grateful. I have privately considered that the benefits of clouds and rain still require vessels to receive them, and the light of the sun and moon can still be blocked by an overturned bowl. Yet, the Emperor's grace extends to the farthest reaches, and his supreme benevolence and favor are bestowed upon me beyond measure. I respectfully think of Your Imperial Majesty, the Emperor and Empress, who possess spiritual enlightenment and respond to the world with skillful means. Therefore, you are able to perceive the ultimate truth of Suchness (Tathata), and turn the Dharma wheel in the nine realms of existence. With compassion, you cherish all beings and rescue those who are drowning in the sufferings of the three evil paths (three realms of woe). Thus, Shanluo, Fatong (name of a monk), Chuyan (name of a monk), and others are able to be cleansed again in the nectar of Dharma, and once more bask in the light of the Emperor. They escape the dark abyss of suffering and ascend to the pure heavens, and they escape the burning house of afflictions and find shelter in the clouds of Dharma. Even if I were to be crushed to pieces, I could not repay this imperishable kindness. Even if I were to sacrifice my insignificant body, how could I repay even a fraction of this grace? I only hope that the merit of their shaving their heads in renunciation will dispel afflictions from the imperial palace, and that the power of their upholding the precepts will bring blessings to the imperial court. I respectfully wish the Emperor and Empress a life of ten thousand springs, abundant with a hundred blessings, to reign forever over the empire, and to protect all living beings. May the Crown Prince be wise and virtuous, shining like a precious gem. May the princes, favored by the Emperor, have their domains as stable as a rock. May their fame spread far and wide in their residences. I, Xuanzang, often reflect on myself, having no virtue to offer to the times, and no merit to offer to the country, yet I have received the Emperor's special favor for many years. I am constantly filled with shame, and I cannot eat or sleep in peace. Even the bamboo of the Xiang River (a metaphor for endless writing) is not enough to express my gratitude, and who can repay the Emperor's generosity even if I were to give up bodies as numerous as the sands of the Ganges? I still rely on the Emperor's favor to prolong my life. I am overwhelmed with gratitude, and I humbly submit this memorial to express my thanks. I have defiled the imperial presence, and I am filled with fear and trepidation. Humbly submitted.
Memorial Expressing Gratitude for Receiving Medical Treatment
The śrāmaṇa (monk) Xuanzang (name of the translator, 602-664) says: I, Xuanzang, am not skilled at taking care of my health, and my old illness has worsened, bringing me near death. I was about to bid farewell to this world. The Emperor, in his compassion, sent a skilled physician. As soon as the acupuncture and medicine were applied, I was healed. He has prolonged my declining years and revived my fading spirit. I am able to see the prosperous times again and continue to follow the enlightened guidance. This is not only that the disease that had penetrated to the marrow has been eradicated, but also that the functions of my body can be regulated permanently. Considering my ordinary and unworthy self, I have repeatedly received the Emperor's special favor. The Emperor's kindness is so great that I cannot repay it even with my life. I can only rely on the power of wisdom to repay the Emperor's blessings in the unseen realm.

【English Translation】 English version: Xuanzang still felt weak and unable to go to the court to express his gratitude in person, feeling extremely apprehensive. He respectfully sent his disciple, Dacheng Guang, to present a memorial to report the situation. Respectfully.
Memorial of Thanks for Receiving Medicine and Imperial Envoy to Inquire About Illness
The Shramana Xuanzang reports: Xuanzang, due to the heavy burden of his karma, has contracted illness, and his breath is faint, almost bidding farewell to this world. Suddenly, he received the compassionate concern of the Emperor and Empress, who expressed worry for his life. The imperial envoy came to inquire many times, more than ten times in all. Divine medicine descended to save him, as if he had received a miraculous elixir. Bathing in the benevolence of the Holy One, the heavy pain has been eliminated. Receiving the grace of medical treatment, he was finally cured. Unexpectedly, his departed soul was summoned back by God; the life bestowed by heaven was reforged in the great furnace. Reflecting on his own mediocrity, he is truly unable to repay this kindness. Touching his chest, he feels ashamed, and words cannot express his gratitude. Receiving such special grace, it is truly difficult to repay, even if he were to grind his body to dust. He will strive to recite scriptures and worship the Buddha, exhausting his body and mind, to repay this immeasurable kindness, and slightly compensate for his infinite responsibility. He is extremely grateful and respectfully attaches a memorial to express his thanks. Joy and fear are intertwined, and he does not know what to do. Respectfully.
Memorial of Thanks for the Decree to Suspend Applying Secular Law to Monks and Nuns
The Shramana Xuanzang reports: I respectfully read the imperial decree, which stated that the provision to suspend applying secular law to monks and nuns who have committed offenses, and to continue to follow the old rules. This extraordinary grace has suddenly descended upon the monastic community; this immeasurable kindness has once again been bestowed upon Xuanzang. Looking up to the sun and bathing in the Buddhist path, I truly feel honored. Being in a confined place, cultivating oneself, one can only become more vigilant. I privately believe that since the Nirvana of the Dharma King (Buddha), the teachings of the Buddha have only been transmitted in a hollow manner. The rules for upholding and inheriting the Dharma are entrusted to enlightened monarchs. I respectfully believe that Your Majesty governs the world with perfect wisdom, and rectifies the world as a Chakravartin (wheel-turning king). Caring for Buddhism, you cherish the desire to propagate and expound the Dharma. Believing that the shaved-headed disciples of the Xuanmen (Buddhist order) are inherently different from secular people. Even if their emotions are entangled in the five turbidities and their disciplinary conduct is often deficient, their bodies are draped in the three robes, and the field of merit still exists. Reducing the dense net of harsh laws, and widely implementing policies of leniency; believing in the true words spoken by the Buddha's golden mouth, and allowing them to reform themselves. This will surely please the gods and respond with auspicious omens. It is not only that the monks and nuns cherish gratitude, but also that they become more steadfast in their loyalty. If anyone violates this leniency and brings blame upon themselves, they will be violating the strict teachings of the Master (Buddha) and betraying the profound compassion of the enlightened monarch. All wise spirits will naturally condemn them.

【English Translation】 English version: Punishment, is it waiting for the law to judge before determining the crime of deceit and falsehood? I, Xuanzang, am mediocre and ignorant, humbly placed among the flow of Buddhism. Every time I receive the Emperor's grace, my heart is already filled with shame and trepidation. Now, receiving a special reward, I feel even more apprehensive and fearful. It is only because I have recently been afflicted with illness that I have been unable to go to the court to express my gratitude as usual. I am truly unable to express my reverence and gratitude. I respectfully send my disciple, Mahayanakirti, to present a memorial to express my thanks. I respectfully report. Memorial of Profound Gratitude for the Cessation of Applying Secular Law to Monks and Nuns The Shramana (ascetic) Xuanzang reports: I respectfully read the Emperor's gracious decree, which cancels the regulations for investigating and interrogating monks and nuns according to secular law. My joy and gratitude cannot be expressed in words. I privately believe that the promotion of the Dharma is magnified according to the Emperor's will; the rise and fall of ethical norms rely on the profound teachings of the Dharma to make up for deficiencies. Since the wise ruler has been in power, he has valued and promoted morality and culture, distinguishing between Buddhism and Confucianism, opening the path to different routes leading to the same destination, and opening up the only path. Displaying the treasures of the Dragon Palace in the Penglai Pavilion, connecting the pure land of Vulture Peak to the divine land of China, so that the sounds of bells and chants fill the entire country, and the cause of doing good deeds washes the hearts of the people. This is truly a great opportunity for Buddhism and a great fortune for the people of the world. Previously, because the monks did not abide by the rules, and the teaching and management were improper, it led to internal damage to the image of Buddhism and external violations of the laws of the country. One person committed a crime, and all the monks were implicated, thus offending the Emperor's majesty, ordering the monks and nuns to be judged according to secular law, hoping to rectify the atmosphere, with the aim of punishment. The monks were shocked and frightened, ashamed and fearful day and night. But the Emperor is wise, and his benevolent grace shines upon the world, deeply exploring the mysteries of Buddhism, and tolerantly encompassing minor faults, thus bestowing special grace, exempting the severe punishment. It is not because these people are worthy of pity, but out of consideration for the dignity of the Dharma. Thus, the fish that fell into the net are allowed to swim back to the rivers, and the birds that touched the cage fly back to the distant sky. The water of the Dharma, even if turbid, can become clear, and the barren field of merit can become fertile again. The monks are deeply grateful for the Emperor's kindness, and each person will strive to encourage themselves, hoping to work hard to correct their mistakes and do good, in order to conform to the Emperor's will, and to wholeheartedly worship the Buddha and recite the scriptures, in order to repay the Emperor's kindness. I respectfully wish the Emperor and Empress to forever condense hundreds of blessings with the merit of promoting Buddhism, and to govern the country peacefully for ten thousand springs with the cause of compassion, so that the territory of China is filled with auspiciousness, and the country is strong and beautiful. I am so excited that I dance and express my gratitude beyond words. I respectfully attach another memorial to express my thanks, to report to the Emperor. I have rashly offended the Emperor's dignity, and I am even more fearful. I respectfully report. Memorial of Thanks for Gifts and Miscellaneous Items

【English Translation】 English version: Shramana (Buddhist monastic) Xuanzang reports: I have received your gracious gift of silk fabrics and various items, and I am filled with surprise and shame, at a loss for words to express my gratitude. This upper garment embroidered with gold threads has been passed down from wise predecessors, perhaps it is a priceless treasure, as mentioned in the sacred texts, but I have never witnessed such a profound and exquisite gift with my own eyes. Observing its balanced and elegant colors, even the most skilled artisans could not surpass its craftsmanship; the tailoring is meticulous and intricate, even complex carvings cannot fathom its subtlety. Wearing it, I feel as if I am surrounded by mist and clouds, and standing in a garden full of orchids. Looking down at myself, I feel my worth has greatly increased. In the past, Dao'an (a prominent Eastern Jin Dynasty monk) cherished items from the Qin Dynasty, but he never encountered such favor; Zhi Dun (another prominent Eastern Jin Dynasty monk) praised and revered the Jin Dynasty, but rarely heard of such grace. Only Xuanzang, a mediocre and shallow person, alone enjoys this profound kindness, and feeling the Emperor's favor, I am filled with trembling and shame. I humbly wish that the Emperor and Empress will have many children and grandchildren, enjoy boundless blessings, forever illuminate the world, and eternally rule the country, protecting all living beings, and be as eternal as heaven and earth. I cannot bear this shame and gratitude, and I respectfully submit this memorial to express my thanks, to inform Your Majesty. The gift is heavy, but my words are light, unable to fully express my feelings, I respectfully submit this. Memorial of Celebration for the Buddha-Light King, Zhou King, by Shramana Xuanzang: Shramana Xuanzang reports: I have heard that the supreme Buddha-dharma is widely propagated, enlightening gods and humans, which is worthy of celebration. The birth of a sage in the land of Keqi is deeply moving. I humbly believe that the Emperor and Empress have hearts like mirrors, perceiving the emptiness of all phenomena, and their teachings are spread throughout the world. Therefore, they are able to govern the world with the Two Truths (conventional truth and ultimate truth), and guide all beings with the One Vehicle (the only path to Buddhahood). When the Orchid Palace (imperial palace) first welcomed the Buddha image, countless vows were made; when the Empress was pregnant, signs of leaving the city (referring to Prince Siddhartha's renunciation) appeared. May the Ten Titles (the ten epithets of a Buddha) descend upon the world, propagating the Dharma and universally saving all beings. May hundreds of gods protect and benevolent deities purify the palace. Therefore, disasters can be eliminated, and peace and harmony can descend upon the world. Seven lotus flowers seem to carry the Buddha's footsteps, and nine dragons lower their heads to cleanse their bodies. The Xuan Gate (Buddhist teachings) awaits the Buddha's footsteps, and the Bodhi tree leaves behind its shade. Even if past emperors presented auspicious signs and touched the sky to display wonders, how can they compare to this grand gift, or be mentioned in the same breath as this brilliant achievement? The people sing and rejoice, happy that the imperial family receives the blessings of heaven; the monks are courageous and diligent, rejoicing in the arrival of the Kanma (Buddhist scriptures). I humbly wish that Your Majesty will not change your previous kindness, and especially order that monks can freely wear their Dharma robes, not always longing for their former residences, but planting seeds of goodness. Moreover, the honor of the imperial son and his monastic practice lie in this, and the position of the Dharma King is noble and even more exalted. In addition, the merit is boundless, able to ferry all beings to the other shore. If Your Majesty's grace is without error, the great vows will not be in vain.

【English Translation】 English version: I humbly submit that exhausting the resources of the four seas is insufficient to compare with this act of generosity. Devoting the endeavors of the ten Bhumi Bodhisattvas is inadequate to liken to this foundation of merit. May the Emperor and Empress be blessed with a hundredfold of fortune, their radiance matching the zenith. May their longevity be marked by ten thousand springs, as steadfast as the Southern Mountain. May they exhaust their pleasures in extended years, and tread the path of the Bodhisattva for endless kalpas. May the Crown Prince be truly virtuous, inheriting the imperial legacy. May the appointed vassals be appropriate, assisting and illuminating the royal house. May the swaddled infant heirs enjoy ever-increasing blessings. May they establish the virtue of the main branch, and inherit the fragrant legacy of the Buddha's seat. Xuanzang, having been undeservedly favored by this great era, finds himself within the forbidden palace. His position is not due to virtuous ascent, but accumulated favor. Fortunately, he belongs to a nation that is just beginning its celebration, laying the foundation for pure karma. His heart leaps with joy, and he would not regret being ground to dust. Overwhelmed with joy and congratulations, he respectfully presents this memorial for your consideration. He lightly encroaches upon your majesty, and trembles with fear. Respectfully submitted.
Memorial Celebrating the Buddha's Light King Presenting Robe, Bowl, and Staff Three Times Within a Week
The Shramana Xuanzang reports. Xuanzang has heard that the Book of Changes praises the meaning of daily renewal, and the Book of Odes extols the endlessness of descendants. The reason why the Zhou dynasty's reign exceeded expectations and the Han dynasty's calendar extended far and wide is because they conformed to this principle. He has also heard that the Dragon Gate's returning currents are a source that is long-lasting and flows far. Cassia trees grow in clusters, relying on deep roots for fragrant foliage. Humbly considering that the imperial fortune has accumulated through successive sages, following the old rules, accumulating benevolence and righteousness, and nurturing the common people, its origin is long-standing. Therefore, the two Empresses gloriously received the great treasure, laying the foundation for their descendants, which can be said to have deep roots and a long source. When Your Majesty ascended the throne, your achievements became even more prosperous. Returning to simplicity and purity, you followed the footsteps of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. Establishing rites and creating music, you surpassed the standards of the Yin and Zhou dynasties. You do not value riding in luxurious carriages, but rather seek to aid the common people. You seek talent before dawn and forget to eat when the sun sets. You select and cultivate talents, placing them in various positions. You select the capable and dismiss the flawed, striving diligently to rectify the way of governance. The ruler sits in tranquility, and the world is clear for ten thousand miles. Even the prosperity of the reigns of Cheng and Kang did not reach this level. Therefore, auspicious clouds gather, and the rivers and seas are calm. All regions follow customs, and the people are bathed in education. How grand, how magnificent, it is difficult to fully express in words. Soon after, virtue moved the heavens, and the gods bestowed blessings. In an auspicious month, on a joyous day, the imperial prince was born. The imperial branches are broad and lush, and the beautiful calyxes are even more abundant. All the people of the land harbor hope, and there is no one who does not celebrate and rely on this.
【English Translation】 English version: It lies with Xuanzang, holding steadfast to an unwavering devotion. It is not merely rejoicing in the Emperor's well-being, but truly delighting that the Tathagata (如來) [Thus Come One] has a successor. I humbly beseech you not to disregard the previous decree, and to permit him to immediately renounce the world. Transform the scion of a human king into a son of the Dharma King. Bestow upon him the Dharma robes, establish a Dharma name, impart the Three Refuges, and enroll him among the Sangha. Revive and flourish the Buddhist teachings, propagate the profound Dharma, causing the Chan (禪) [Zen] forest to bloom anew, and the garden of enlightenment to shine brightly once more. Follow in the magnificent footsteps of Pure Eye (凈眼) [referring to past Buddhas], and tread the noble path of Moon Canopy (月蓋) [referring to Bodhisattvas]. Sever the two kinds of entanglements, and attain unparalleled enlightenment. May his physical form be subtle and wondrous, like the King of Mountains; may his net of flames be adorned, surpassing the radiance of the sun and moon. Then, may he spread the compassionate clouds over the realm of the great chiliocosm, and raise the torch of wisdom over hundreds of billions of continents. Beat the Dharma drum to subdue the heavenly demons, and wave the victorious banner to vanquish the heretics. Rescue those drowning in the sea of suffering, and extinguish the blazing fires of heretical mountains. Exhaust the deep river of afflictions, and shatter the massive shell of ignorance. Become a tamer of men, a teacher of gods and humans. May the ancestral spirits, through the merit of their grandson, ascend to the other shore; may the Emperor and Empress, through the blessings of their son, enjoy ten thousand springs, forever holding the spiritual chart and constantly ruling over the nine regions. If the prince can accomplish these things, then he will be truly filial, and truly bring honor to his parents. This is why Shakyamuni (釋迦) [Sage of the Shakya clan] abandoned his kingdom and devoted himself to Bodhi (菩提) [Enlightenment]. How can the trivial good deeds of the Prince of Dongping (東平王), and the mediocre talents of the Prince of Chensi (陳思王), be compared in terms of superiority or inferiority, or discussed in terms of depth or shallowness in the same year? I respectfully prepare my robes and bowl, in anticipation of the arrival of a virtuous guest, and sweep the seat clean, awaiting the arrival of a distinguished visitor from afar. I am filled with boundless joy and eager anticipation. I humbly submit this memorial, presuming upon Your Majesty's authority, and further increasing my trepidation. I respectfully submit.
Memorial of Thanks for Shaving the Head of the Buddha Light Zhou Prince on His Full Moon and Celebrating the Ordination of People
The Shramana (沙門) [Monk] Xuanzang (玄奘) [Name of the monk] reports: Yesterday, I received the gracious decree, ordering Xuanzang to shave the head of the Buddha Light Prince, and also instructing the ordination of seven monks. The hair that is shaved off represents the Prince's afflictions being shed; the monks who are ordained represent the Prince's attendants being equipped. Therefore, it shakes the palace of Mara (波旬) [Demon King], and excites the joy of the Pure Abode Heavens (凈居) [Pure Abode Heavens in the Form Realm]. The grand vows have been proclaimed, and the auspicious blessings are increasingly abundant. Who would have thought that my ordinary and humble hands could perform this skill on the Emperor's skin; that I, a common mortal, could receive the grace to participate in this auspicious gathering. Those above and below are delighted and moved, with both sorrow and joy.

【English Translation】 English version: Intersection. I secretly seek the profound meaning of 䨱護 (b保佑, referring to the protection of deities or Buddhas), which is most important in infancy. The cause of liberation begins with tonsure and hair cutting. I respectfully hope that the Emperor and Empress, their virtue and morality are condensed beyond the secular world, and their blessings spread throughout the realm. Therefore, they can enlighten and open this profound Dharma gate, and cultivate the root of virtue. What is hoped is that the imperial family can receive the blessings of heaven, and the throne can extend peace. To rule over hundreds of millions of subjects and the world, and experience tens of millions of years of prosperity. May the nursing and growth of Prince Foguang (佛光王) be appropriate. May good deities protect his body, and all Buddhas touch his head to bless him. Increase his wisdom and philosophical qualities, and fulfill his important task of inheriting the great cause. The newly ordained monks, having received deep grace, should also be diligent in studying the Dharma and concentrate on practicing the precepts. Indeed, they can meet the expectations of the imperial family, waiting to be appointed. I am infinitely grateful, and I respectfully submit this memorial to report. Respectfully. A memorial celebrating the full moon of Prince Foguang (佛光王) and presenting Dharma robes, etc. The śrāmaṇa Xuanzang (玄奘, referring to the author himself) reports. I have secretly heard that with wings propelled by the wind, one can accumulate days and soar into the sky. A bright jade depicting the moon takes more than ten days to reach fullness. From this, it can be known that those who are endowed with spirituality beyond ordinary things, and whose brilliance illuminates the heavens, must be beautifully displaying their excellence and renewing their beauty. Prince Foguang (佛光王), relying on the highest good deeds to create auspiciousness, and elucidating the virtue of moderation and harmony to cultivate virtue. Since his birth in the royal garden, the gods have admired and paid attention. His wise aura is clear, and his sleep and meals receive the blessings of heaven. His jade-like face is beautiful, and it is growing brighter morning and evening. If it were not for the Emperor and Empress's wisdom shining upon themselves, and the Dharma's nectar washing their thoughts, entrusting the hope of inheriting the great cause to a foundation as solid as a rock, and initiating the tonsure from gods to mortals, who could protect this infant in swaddling clothes, comfort this nursing child, without disaster or harm, and become a clever and talented person? Now the waxing and waning of the moon has completed a cycle, and the appearance of the full moon is magnificent. The 蓂莢 (míng jiá, a legendary plant whose growth is related to the waxing and waning of the moon) has grown again, and his lotus-like eyes are bright. Therefore, the imperial palace feels comforted, and the people all feel happy. The seven assemblies of disciples all take refuge and rely on him, and the people of the four directions are all waiting to admire him. It is not just about seeking beautiful words every day, waiting to ride a crane. Xuanzang (玄奘, referring to the author himself) is fortunate to receive the Emperor's favor, allowing me to be protected. The expectations of my fellow disciples are not what I dare to hope for, but the friendship of being fellow disciples of the Buddha is indeed deeply held in my heart. Therefore, I venture to present a volume of the Prajñāpāramitāhṛdayasūtra (般若心經) written in gold letters, along with a sutra case. A copy of the Avadanas of Repaying Kindness Sutra A set of kāṣāya Dharma robes. An incense burner, a treasure container (for incense), an incense table, a water bottle, a sutra stand, a rosary, a khakkhara (錫杖), and a soap bean box. To serve as Dharma implements, to express my personal joy. What is hoped is that I can be ranked in the ranks of attendants,

【English Translation】 English version: Yu Ban-zhang (person's name). On behalf of the humble me, I express my respect to Peng-shi (place name). May the benevolent deities rejoice upon seeing this, and may the grand vows be further strengthened. I offer these tributes with a light heart, feeling deep trepidation within. I respectfully pray that the Emperor and Empress, with their noble presence like the Archstar (North Star), and their sagacious virtue like the sun and moon, bring joy to the myriad people and enjoy longevity and prosperity. May they be as clear and radiant as Shao-hai (person's name), overshadowing the brilliance of Pi-zhao (person's name) and selecting talents. May their favor flourish like Fan (place name), galloping swiftly on a smooth path. What I wish for is that Buddha-guang-wang (Buddha's name) blesses the crowns of the heads of a thousand Buddhas, that hundreds of blessings gather upon their bodies, and that their virtuous words grow daily, without deviating from the past plans. I am filled with immense gratitude and submit this memorial to report. I have lightly offended the heavenly majesty, and I am deeply fearful. Respectfully.
Memorial Requesting Entry to Mount Song
The Shramana Xuanzang (person's name) reports. Xuanzang has heard that the path to Bodhi (enlightenment) is far, and those who pursue it must rely on provisions. The river of Samsara (birth and death) is deep, and those who cross it must depend on boats and rafts. Provisions refer to the wondrous practices of the Three Learnings (morality, concentration, wisdom) and the Three Wisdoms (right view, right thought, right speech), not things like husking rice. Boats and rafts refer to the pure karma of the Eight Forbearances (eight kinds of patience towards truth) and the Eight Contemplations (eight ways of observing truth), not ordinary boats. Therefore, the Buddhas, possessing these, ascend to the other shore, while ordinary beings, lacking these, sink into Samsara. Thus, the vast Three Realms all drift in the river of the Seven Leaks (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, Manas consciousness). The boundless Four Births (womb-born, egg-born, moisture-born, transformation-born) all drown in the waves of the Ten Entanglements (shamelessness, lack of remorse, jealousy, stinginess, regret, sleepiness, restlessness, torpor, anger, concealment). None do not spin with the waves, swirl like smoke, with minds confused and intentions intoxicated, tirelessly exhausting eons, and becoming ever more entrenched even filling areas as small as mustard seeds. They never know to drive the Three Carts (goat cart, deer cart, ox cart) out of the Burning House (Three Realms), or to ride the Eightfold Path (right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration) to reach the Treasure Land (Nirvana). It is truly lamentable! Is it only the autumn air that increases sighs? Is it only the feelings of Confucius (person's name)? Therefore, I have never failed to stop eating when at meals, or to be startled when sleeping. Xuanzang often reflects that this body is a temporary aggregation of many causes and conditions, constantly changing. Even the trees on the shore and the vines in the well are not enough to compare to its fragility. The foam on the shield cannot be used to describe its impermanence. Therefore, I take each morning and evening as my limit, not daring to hope for longevity. And the years flow like water, and sixty years have passed in the blink of an eye. Thinking of the swiftness of time, the end of life is foreseeable. Moreover, in my youth, I sought the Dharma and visited teachers and friends, traveling from my own country to other countries, leaving no place unvisited. The roads were long and arduous, and my body and strength were exhausted. In recent years, I have become even more frail and weak. Looking at my shadow and reflecting on my life, how much time do I have left? Since my provisions are not yet sufficient, and the road ahead is getting shorter, not a day goes by without feeling sorrow and sighing.
【English Translation】 English version: Words and ink cannot fully express my gratitude. I, a humble person, have been fortunate enough to encounter enlightened monarchs many times, receiving the radiance of His Majesty and the unmerited favor of promotion. I have been bathed in profound compassion for a long time. As a result, my reputation has grown, and my fame has spread far and wide, as if I could fly without wings, residing high above the clouds. I receive various offerings and surpass the glory and wealth of my peers, which is unprecedented in ancient times. What virtue or merit do I, Xuanzang, possess to have reached this point? It is all due to His Majesty's grace, as vast as the heavenly waves and as illuminating as the sun and moon, which has turned stones from Yan into treasures and valued inferior horses. Reflecting on myself, I feel deeply ashamed. Moreover, fullness leads to disaster, as the wise men of the past have profoundly taught. Reducing desires and knowing contentment are also the sincere admonitions of all Buddhas. I, Xuanzang, am aware that my talents are empty and my reputation is undeserved. I should not continue to receive His Majesty's grace for long. I hope to retire and spend the rest of my life in the mountains and forests, reciting scriptures to repay His Majesty's promotion and encouragement. Furthermore, His Majesty, with the dignity of a Chakravartin (wheel-turning king), promotes the teachings of the Dharma King (Buddha), ordering the translation of all the scriptures obtained from the Western Regions. I, Xuanzang, with my limited knowledge and abilities, have presumptuously undertaken this important task. Since I have received His Majesty's decree, I dare not slacken day or night. Now, I have translated more than six hundred volumes, all of which are the essence of the Tripitaka (three baskets of Buddhist scriptures) and the Four Agamas (collections of Buddhist scriptures), the pivot of the Mahayana (Great Vehicle) and Hinayana (Small Vehicle), the source of practice and positions for ordinary people and sages, and the ocean of the eighty-four thousand Dharma gates. The Western Regions praise these scriptures as the treasures for protecting the country and pacifying the region, and the required meanings can always be found. It is like choosing wood in the Deng Forest, where you can find any size you need; or collecting treasures on the seashore, where you can find any shape you desire. Scholars can find the direction of their studies in these scriptures. I, Xuanzang, use these to repay the country's kindness, but I cannot fully express my gratitude. Nevertheless, I hope to contribute even a fraction of my ability. However, to cut off afflictions, one must rely on the assistance of wisdom, just like the two wheels of a cart, without which it cannot move forward. Studying scriptures and treatises is learning wisdom, while relying on the forest for meditation is cultivating samadhi (concentration). I, Xuanzang, have been relatively specialized in doctrine since I was young, but I have not had time to settle my mind in the Four Dhyanas (meditative absorptions) and Nine Samapattis (attainments). Now I wish to entrust myself to the gate of Chan (Zen), clarify my mind, cultivate samadhi, control the restless emotions like monkeys, and restrain the galloping thoughts like elephants. If I do not retreat into the mountains, I cannot achieve these. Now I hear that the lofty Shaoshi Mountain in this state has overlapping ridges and beautiful peaks, containing wind and clouds, and embracing benevolence and wisdom. It is rich in fruits and medicines, and the mountains and forests are pure and serene.

【English Translation】 English version: Here are the famous mountains within the realm, the sacred peaks within the territory. Among them are the Shaolin Monastery (Shàolín Qiélán, Shaolin Monastery), the Xianju Temple (Xiánjū Sì, Secluded Abode Temple), and others, all nestled against rocky valleys, surrounded by forests and springs. Buddhist affairs are solemn, and the rooms are quiet and deep, which is where the Tripitaka master Bodhiruchi (Pútíliúzhī, Bodhiruchi) of the Later Wei Dynasty translated the scriptures. It is truly a place to rely on and return to, to cultivate meditation and contemplation. Moreover, two officials who resigned from the court still understood to leave behind glory and return to the mountains and forests. Hermits like Chao Fu (Cháo Fǔ, Chao Fu) and Xu You (Xǔ Yóu, Xu You) still knew to dwell in the wilderness and maintain their pure nature. How much more so should Xuanzang (Xuánzàng, Xuanzang), who became a monk for the sake of the Dharma, not remain stuck in the marketplace? This noble spirit makes people feel ashamed when they think of it! I hope that Your Majesty's wisdom surpasses the sun, moon, and stars, and illuminates the deepest darkness. I humbly beg Your Majesty to understand my foolish sincerity and to grant my request, so that I may cut off the noise and dust of the world, hide my tracks from humanity, accompany the herds of deer, and follow the flocks of wild ducks and cranes. I will dwell on a single rock, shelter under the shade of a tree, guard my restless mind, and contemplate the true nature of reality. I will ensure that the thieves of the four maras (sì mó, four demons) and nine fetters (jiǔ jié, nine bonds) have no way to penetrate, and that the minds of the five patiences (wǔ rěn, five kinds of endurance) and ten practices (shí xíng, ten kinds of practice) will arise in succession. I will make gradual progress towards enlightenment (Bodhi, Pútí), and become a good cause for reaching the other shore (Nirvana, bǐ'àn). Outwardly, I will not burden the imperial influence, and inwardly, I will increase my own practice. In this way, I will repay the Emperor's kindness. If I am granted permission, then I can follow the elegant conduct of Huiyuan (Huìyuǎn, Huiyuan) of Mount Lu, and continue the pure and subtle aspirations of Daolin (Dàolín, Daolin) of Yanxi. I also hope that in my spare time from meditation and contemplation, I can translate scriptures. I feel boundless joy and desire. I respectfully go to the palace to present this memorial to Your Majesty. I have lightly offended Your Majesty's dignity, and I feel deep fear. I respectfully say. Emperor's Edict in Response to the Memorial of the Dharma Master Xuanzang Requesting to Enter Mount Song: I have read your memorial. I know that you wish to hide your tracks in the rocky springs, follow the footsteps of Lin Yuan (Lín Yuǎn, referring to Huiyuan), entrust your thoughts to meditation and tranquility, and emulate Kumarajiva (Jūmóluóshí, Kumarajiva) to set an example for the present. I admire your character, and I truly respect you. My knowledge is shallow, and I have not deeply studied the Dharma. However, with my limited understanding, I do not think your request is feasible. The Dharma Master is a bridge for the three realms (sān jiè, three realms of existence) and a guide for the four kinds of beings (sì shēng, four kinds of birth). Your wisdom is like a bright lamp of the mind, and your meditation is like the calm waters of the mind. You cannot be obscured by the dust of worldly emotions, nor can you be startled by the waves of consciousness. However, where morality resides, why must it necessarily be in the overlapping peaks of Mount Hua? The state of emptiness and tranquility can be abandoned, so why must it necessarily be in the heavy mountains of Mount Shaoshi (Shàoshì, Mount Shaoshi)? I hope you will stop such thoughts and not present any more requests. Then you will be a great hermit in the marketplace, not only more valuable than the sages of the past, but your sights and sounds will be more worthy of cherishing in this present age for the benefit of propagating the Dharma. This is my edict.

【English Translation】 English version (Inside and Outside, by Dharma Master Xuanzang)
Memorial of Thanks for Imperial Edict
The Shramana Xuanzang (Shamen Xuanzang, a Buddhist monk) says: The envoy Li Junxin (Li Junxin) has arrived, bringing with him Your Majesty's handwritten edict. The silver-hooked strokes are beautiful against the vermilion characters, and the literary elegance is as splendid as the Hetu (Hetu, a mystical diagram). The edict's grandeur carries the form of mountains, and its richness embraces the spirit of wind and clouds. I never expected that in the twilight of Baizang (Baizang, the end of the year), I would see writing as beautiful as spring blossoms. Residing between the Yi and Luo rivers, I suddenly behold the jade of Kunshan (Kunshan) and Jingshan (Jingshan). Holding and reading the edict, I am filled with joy, dancing with my hands and feet. In the past, Jizhong (Jizhong) received the courtesy of Marquis Wen of Wei (Wei Wenhou), but only recounted the sorrow of parting; Huiyuan (Huiyuan) received a letter from the Jin emperor, and only received a supply of rice. I have never seen words that combine emptiness and the idea of renunciation, teaching me the sentiment of being a recluse even in the marketplace. From this, I know that Your Majesty's heart is profound and encompasses both the divine and the mundane, integrating existence and non-existence, surpassing Xuanyuan Huangdi (Xuanyuan Huangdi) in height and exceeding Cao Zhi (Cao Zhi) and Sima Xiangru (Sima Xiangru) in distance! But I, Xuanzang (Xuanzang), am like plain silk, especially afraid of being dyed red or blue; like a kudzu vine, I truly hope to become a pine or catalpa tree. I yearn to live among the mists and clouds of Shaoshi Mountain (Shaoshi Mountain), and to dwell by the springs and rocks of Song Mountain (Song Mountain), allowing me to escape the danger of drowning and ultimately fulfill my ambition to prevent fire. Therefore, I dare to exhaust my foolish views and presumptuously present my thoughts, hoping that the kindness of Taozhen (陶甄, a metaphor for nurturing all things) will not overlook the ducks and sparrows, and that the grace of rain and clouds will not abandon the spiders. However, Your Majesty's clear edict has descended, but has not accepted my request, and still bestows grace, especially illuminating me. This makes my five senses tremble with fear, and I do not know what to do. Since I have been ordered to cease speaking, I dare not ask again. I respectfully submit this memorial of thanks, only increasing my fear and anxiety. I respectfully submit.
Memorial from Dharma Master Xuanzang Requesting Again to Enter the Mountains
The Shramana Xuanzang (Shamen Xuanzang) says: Xuanzang (Xuanzang) is mediocre and weak, but fortunate to participate in the Sangha. During the Zhenguan (Zhenguan) era, I received special favor early on; since the Yonghui (Yonghui) era, I have been extremely favored by imperial grace. Looking back at my own inferiority, I often feel ashamed and indebted. Since I was ordered to translate scriptures fifteen years ago, I have not dared to slacken day or night, and my thoughts and energy have been exhausted. Approaching the age of sixty, I have also contracted rubella, and my mind is confused, no longer as usual. Old age and illness follow one after another, how much further is the road ahead? Now that I am no longer able to handle full-time translation, how can I abuse the Emperor's grace? I request that all the monks translating scriptures be dismissed. Please allow me to move to Yuhua Palace (Yuhua Palace) with one or two disciples, to occasionally translate minor scriptures, and also to recite scriptures. Above

【English Translation】 English version: Ziguo Qing (name). I request permission to spend my remaining years here. And I also request that the five guards be retained to continue their defense duties. I hope to receive Your Majesty's grace and be spared from my faults. I am extremely sincere. I respectfully go to the palace to submit this memorial. I have lightly offended Your Majesty's dignity, and I am deeply fearful. Respectfully submitted.
Memorial of Thanks for Being Allowed to Enter the Mountain
The Shramana (Buddhist monk) Xuanzang ( Dharma name) reports. Yesterday, I received Your Majesty's gracious decree, allowing Xuanzang and his disciples to move to Yuhua (place name), and the monks who translate scriptures will also go there to translate. All supplies will remain the same. I am extremely joyful and eagerly participate. Xuanzang is just an ordinary person of low status, but I have repeatedly received Your Majesty's favor. Your Majesty's benevolence is all-encompassing, and special grace has been bestowed upon me again. You favor my work and allow me to reside in a prominent place. I examine my heart and feel even more ashamed. The grace I receive is even greater. Even if I were to die ten thousand times, I could not repay it. I am extremely grateful and moved. I respectfully go to the palace to express my gratitude. Respectfully submitted.
Memorial Requesting an Imperial Preface to the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra
The Shramana Xuanzang reports. I humbly believe that in the Great Vehicle of Buddhism, Prajna (wisdom) is the foundation. It molds all wonderful forms and encompasses everything. The emperors of previous dynasties had varying degrees of merit and virtue, and their understanding of the true Dharma was not complete in the Sanskrit texts. However, the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra contains a total of two hundred thousand Gathas (verses), and the Western Regions (ancient name for the West) regarded it as a national treasure, mostly kept secret and not transmitted. I respectfully believe that Your Majesty's teachings have spread to every hidden place, and your sage teachings have subtly influenced the people, so that this profound classic has come from a distant land. Xuanzang formerly relied on the power of the state to travel to distant lands to seek the Dharma, enduring all kinds of hardships, searching for lost Buddhist teachings, and finally bringing them back to China for nineteen years. I have translated more than one thousand three hundred volumes of Sanskrit texts. However, Xuanzang is nearly seventy years old and often falls ill. I fear that I will perish before I can repay Your Majesty's grace. Therefore, I exert my failing strength and translate by lamplight at night. I respectfully follow Your Majesty's decree and translate day and night. Starting from the first day of the first month of Xianqing five (era name), I translated the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. Until the twenty-third day of the tenth month of Longshuo three (era name), I completed it, totaling six hundred volumes. I hope that this wonderful good deed can be used to support the nation's fortune, and that the ancestors in the Seven Temples (ancestral temples) will receive ten thousand blessings. May the Emperor and Empress shine like the sun and moon, be in harmony with the laws of heaven and earth, forever rule the world, and prosper alone in the Sahā World (Buddhist term for the world). May the Crown Prince be as stable as a rock, and may the princes flourish like branches and leaves. The blessings bestowed in the unseen realm will be long-lasting and without end. The merit is immeasurable.
【English Translation】 English version: Such is its greatness that I dare not remain silent. I hope Your Majesty will personally compose a preface. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince is also ordered to write a sacred record, so that all the ignorant people in the world may see the imperial talent and comprehend the ultimate truth; and that all living beings under the heavens may behold this precious Dharma and know the Emperor's power (帝力, dì lì, imperial power/virtue). In this way, the profound Dharma will become even more sublime, and the monks will rejoice and leap with joy. Although the kalpas (劫難, jié nàn, eons/aeons of suffering) of the mortal world have an end, the wondrous goodness of the Dharma is inexhaustible. Xuanzang (玄奘, Xuánzàng, name of the translator) is translating scriptures at Yuhua Palace (玉華宮, Yùhuá Gōng, Jade Flower Palace) by imperial decree, and has not been able to go to court in person. I respectfully send my disciple Kui (窺, Kuī, name of the disciple) to present this memorial to report. I have rashly offended the imperial majesty, and my heart is filled with fear and unease. I respectfully submit this. On the 22nd day of the eleventh month of the third year of Longshuo (龍朔, Lóngshuò, reign title), the Shramana (沙門, Shāmén, Buddhist monk) Xuanzang of Yuhua Temple (玉華寺, Yùhuá Sì, Jade Flower Temple) in Xuanjun County (宣君縣, Xuānjūn Xiàn, Xuanjun County) of Fang Prefecture (坊州, Fāngzhōu, Fang Prefecture) presents this memorial. On the 7th day of the twelfth month, the Palace Attendant (通事舍人, Tōngshì Shèrén, Palace Attendant) Ping Yi (憑義, Píng Yì, name of the attendant) verbally conveyed the imperial decree, granting permission to write the preface.
