Zen Master Dunwen Xiu of Xiangfu Monastery, Quzhou
Ascending the Hall: Presenting directly at the moment, directly at the moment with speed. If you don't understand turning around, you waste a thousand jun of strength. Small gathering: The old master said, 'The gentle breeze comes from the south, a slight coolness arises at the corner of the hall.' The master said, 'Xiangfu is not like that. The north wind is a陣陣寒(zhèn zhèn hán, gust of cold),the plum blossoms send forth fragrance. If you wait by the stump for a rabbit, you will surely lean against the wall.' This mountain monk says it's like a beggar at a crossroads, using a penny to buy a drop of oil, and in front of a precious imperial banquet, tapping his chest and ribs, saying, 'How many people can know this kind of taste?' Those with knowledge, hearing this, would not only spit out their rice. Right now, the pine is straight, the thorns are bent, the swan is white, the crow is black, the wind whistles through the branches, the rain breaks the clods, East Ye Mountain is high, Qinxi Stream is cold, each and every one directly reveals constant light, not relying on cultivation or fabrication. Those with eyes see, those with ears hear. Suddenly raising his staff, he said, 'Stop, stop. What is said is good. Take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.'

【English Translation】 English version: 'Tis so. Every year on the eighth day of the fourth month (Buddha's Birthday), everyone celebrates the Buddha's birth. On that day, the Buddha alone is revered as the supreme one. But now, calamities and disasters are widespread. Not falling into the trap of Yunmen Wenyan's Zen (Yunmen Wenyan was a famous Zen master), contemplating the merits and resources of the Buddha is limitless. Since everyone is contemplating together, have you seen Shakyamuni Buddha (Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism) himself? The Zen master raised his whisk and said, 'Not involving past, present, or future, the entirety is manifested on the tip of this hair.'
Zen Master Minshu Xiang of Baizhang in Sichuan
Ascending the hall for a Dharma talk: 'Understanding this one thing, everything is finished. Zen Master Zhaozhou hangs a gourd on the east wall, and Dao Wu dances with his tablet without rest. Worthy ones, if there are no idle matters in your mind, then this is a good time in the human realm.'

Zen Master Guyun Xingjian of Dongming, Qiantang, Hangzhou
A son of the Song family of Jiaxing. Ascending the hall for a Dharma talk: 'On the twenty-fifth day of the tenth month, be careful not to be rash. A word without selfishness is like the sun at noon. Immediately turn around and surpass the Buddhas and Patriarchs. It is laughable how Zen Master Xuefeng Yicun rolls a ball, and Zen Master Heshan Wu Yin beats a drum. A great man's actions are outstanding; how could he be willing to be nailed like a stake, rocking an oar?' Small Dharma assembly after the summer retreat: 'Spring is a good time to travel after the summer retreat. Do not be attached to either the worldly or the otherworldly. Roam freely and elegantly beyond the world, but do not bind yourself without a rope. The practice of a wandering monk is extraordinary; the Buddhas and Patriarchs have always been difficult to grasp. Free yourself from dependence and gain freedom, and walk alone freely in the vast universe.' The Zen master passed away in the year of Xinchou (1661) during the Shunzhi reign. His pagoda was built in Dongming.
Zen Master Taibai Xue of Yuhuang, Mingzhou
Ascending the hall for a Dharma talk after the summer retreat: 'Before the fifteenth day, digging a pond does not wait for the moon. After the fifteenth day, the moon will come naturally when the pond is completed. On the fifteenth day itself, carry a pole with you and act according to the occasion. Everywhere, green willows are suitable for tethering horses, and every household has a road leading to Chang'an.'
Zen Master Gufeng Ran of Donglian, Hangzhou
A son of the Xu family of Jiaxing. Ascending the hall for a Dharma talk: 'Cold clouds open to reveal the mountain peaks at dawn, and warm sunlight shines on the empty hall. All things begin from this point, shining and not covered or hidden. Spiritual sprouts emerge from past seeds, and withered roots turn yellowish. The fragrant flowers in the imperial garden have not yet bloomed, but they are imbued with auspicious energy and compete to emit fragrance. The mud ox exposed to the elements turns over and leaps. The antique from years past shakes the earth and emits light, making the peaks of uncut jade and the golden ridges.'
掀眉鼓舞。燈籠露柱。俯首稱揚。盡言。門迎多吉慶。無限風光。各各喜逢佳節。自然道泰時康。雖然如是。只者一般韶光媚景。畢竟承誰恩力。良久云。元和力轉回天地。散作林巒萬卉春 上堂。解語非干舌。能言不是聲。直教玄會得。更不涉途程。端的意甚分明。以拄杖搖云。無風荷葉動。決定有魚行 上堂。大丈夫兒志莫灰。切須猛力出頭來。禪關今日重封鎖。白汗從教下一回。透徹根源諳落處。一番心眼頓然開。橫拈倒用隨施展。剎海毫端萬象該。無造作絕安排。得意欣懷笑滿腮。百日功成圓底事。養成頭角待春雷 師生於萬曆乙卯。寂于康熙庚午八月二十八日。塔建寺后凝云峰下。世壽七十六。臘四十六。有正續燈。行世。

楚沔水趙姓 上堂。卓拄杖曰。心不是佛。智不是道。拄杖子。𨁝跳上三十三天。觸著帝釋鼻孔。打個噴嚏。落在諸人眉毛上廝結。盡力抖擻不下。直饒抖擻得下。未免明眼人前三尺暗。切鬚子細。

婆子拋兒頌曰。祇這孩兒也不消。虎頭戴角出荒郊。毒如蝎惡似鶚。將軍誰數漢嫖姚。

(俯首稱揚) Speaking freely and without reservation. (盡言) The household welcomes much good fortune. (門迎多吉慶) Limitless and beautiful scenery. (無限風光) Everyone joyfully meets on this auspicious festival. (各各喜逢佳節) Naturally, it is a time of peace and prosperity. (自然道泰時康) Although this is so, this beautiful scenery and charming view, after all, whose kindness and power do we receive? (雖然如是。只者一般韶光媚景。畢竟承誰恩力) After a long pause, he said, 'The power of Yuanhe (元和, Tang Xianzong's reign, 806-820 AD) turns the universe, scattering and transforming into forests, hills, and the spring of countless flowers and trees.' 小參。諸方打七。慧山打三。朝三暮四。暮四朝三。鉗錘雖然各別。火色必定一般。金剛圈。栗棘蓬。任你諸人吞跳。主人公額頭上。仔細參詳。以拄杖畫一畫云。透得者個爐鞴過。許你放參。若透不過。且聽山僧一指南。喝一喝 解制。春山覆雪。春草萌芽。春日和融。春風襲襲。衲僧草鞋癢癢。只欲涉水登山。長老拄杖搖搖。直得拋磚引玉。去年結。也是隨方應時節。今年解。終始何妨早數天。佛法猶如水中月。長長短短皆光圓。有佛處不得住。百草頭上祖師意。無佛處急走過。家家門首長安路。三千里外。不得錯舉。墻有風。壁有耳。恁么則不去也。無端又打之乎者。摘楊花摘楊花。思量擬議隔千差。正恁么時。且道。天臺雁宕。可游不可游。投子浮山。可到不可到。良久云。莫將閑學解。埋沒祖師心。

'Cannot be known, cannot be understood' means that it cannot be comprehended through knowledge or explanation. 'Linji's rascal is a barefaced thief' refers to the practitioners of the Linji school as direct awakeners. 'Not mind, not Buddha' means that the truth transcends the concepts of mind and Buddha. Shakyamuni Buddha (563-483 BCE) was nothing more than this, and Bodhidharma's (lived in 5th/6th century) coming from the West was superfluous. Even if the three thousand seven hundred koans are extraordinary, in my view, they are not ultimate. Since they are extraordinary, why do I say they are not? After a long pause, he sighed and said: 'Investigate!' (Go and investigate!)

'The gnat is so anxious that its eyes turn red, dust rises within the Vairocana realm' means that even small afflictions can disturb the pure realm. 'The pillar in front of the hall has been pregnant for a long time, and the child born is full of spirit' means that even seemingly inanimate objects can give birth to new life. After a long pause, he said: 'What is this saying?' Small Dharma talk: Universally presenting drowsiness and sleepiness, Manjusri (symbol of wisdom) misses the dawn. Maudgalyayana (foremost in supernatural powers) loses his eyes, truly laughing at Zi, Chou, Yin, and Mao (the passing of time). How many Meng Balangs (reckless people) throw themselves into the wilderness. The mountain colors and stream sounds must be looked at with the heart to discover the bright sunshine on the coral branches. Small Dharma talk: Old Master Deshan (780-865), picks up a stick, and strikes if the Buddha comes, and strikes if the demon comes. His eyes empty the four seas, carrying Mount Sumeru (holy mountain in Buddhism) on his back, giving and taking away freely, killing and giving life are right before him. Moving like floating clouds, still like the spirit of the valley. Clouds follow the dragon, wind follows the tiger, taking charge everywhere. When encountering opportunities, follow them. Sometimes, hiding names and traces on the top of a solitary peak; sometimes, arguing right and wrong at the crossroads. Being a guest, always be a guest; being a host, always be a host. Free from the body, without reliance, free everywhere. Do you know where this mountain monk finds joy?' After speaking, he walked out with his staff.

We, the Shramana disciples of Shakyamuni, use precepts to restrain our minds, use wisdom to cultivate ourselves, and use precepts to cultivate our bodies. Joining the Bao She (保社), our traces drift across the lakes and seas, pursuing clouds and water, lodging in the misty mountains. We follow the same teachings and enjoy the same benefits. But how should we repay the kindness of the king and the kindness of the Buddha? Raising the ruyi (如意) scepter, he said, 'If you seek it on the way, you will still argue about half a month's journey.' Small Dharma Talk. Advancing is insufficient, retreating is still lenient. 諸方善知識。道眼高。福德大。叢林整齊。飲食清潔。可謂難見而易親也。老僧者里。世緣淺薄。辟草開荒。茶飯粗糲。可謂易見而難親也。師云。昔日磬山。今朝奉聖。同坑無異土。且於不難不易一句。又作么生。彈指頓超千聖外。揚眉不是目前機。

The monasteries and forests where you reside are well-ordered, and the food and drink are pure. It can be said that you are difficult to meet but easy to become close to. This old monk, my worldly connections are shallow. I clear the land and cultivate it, and my tea and meals are simple and coarse. It can be said that I am easy to meet but difficult to become close to. The master said, 'The Qingshan (Qingshan Monastery) of the past, and the Fengsheng (Fengsheng Monastery) of today, are in the same pit, and the soil is no different.' So, how should we understand this phrase 'neither difficult nor easy'? In a snap of the fingers, one transcends countless sages; a raised eyebrow is not the immediate opportunity before us.
