Nothing is brighter than the sun and moon. Why does Chan (Zen) use the name 'lamp' instead of 'sun and moon'? Because the sun and moon cannot be transmitted, but the lamp can be transmitted. Therefore, it is said, 'When the firewood is exhausted, the fire is transmitted; when the oil is used up, the lamp is transmitted.' The sun and moon are in the middle of the sky, from the beginning.

One flower blooms and five-leaved branches grow, lamps are continuously passed on, and flames generate light. For thousands of years, there have been no dark rooms or lost paths, all relying on this lamp. Since this is the case, this lamp exists in all three thousand great thousand worlds. Why is it unique to Jinjiang in Zhen Dan (ancient name for China)? Shen Yu (legendary hero who controlled the floods) personally dredged the river from Mount Min, which is the source of the river. And the prophecy of the Western Regions says, 'The golden rooster unties a grain of millet in its beak to offer to the Arhat monks of 䦹邡 (place name).' Then a colt appeared and trampled the world, and descendants multiplied. So it is fitting to say that the lamp is uniquely prosperous in Jinjiang. Originally, the celestial bodies, the sun and moon, are the reason for steadfast beauty. Humanistic refinement is the reason for manifest brilliance. And among us, there are those who can shatter emptiness, those who can shake Mount Sumeru (the central world-mountain in Buddhist cosmology) with a pillow, and those who enter water without getting wet and enter fire without burning. This is nothing other than the result of diligent and courageous effort. My teacher once quoted the proverb, 'An ounce of time in spring evenings is worth an ounce of gold,' using this to encourage later students. Whether suppressing or promoting, revealing one's own treasure. Therefore, even at the age of seventy, he is still vigorous. He said that I originally made a vow to make all beings no different from us. Hence, there is this act of compilation. It is probably because in our country of Zhendan, people have many false habits. With more falsehood, delusion becomes heavier; with heavier delusion, wisdom becomes lighter; with lighter wisdom, the foundation becomes dull. Therefore, the unfamiliar cannot become familiar, and the familiar cannot become unfamiliar. As for the mind not being exhausted and the nature not being fully understood, where can one return in the vast burning house of the Three Realms? Using the gains and losses of a hundred years, wandering in the kalpic (an immense period of time) flow, is it not greatly lamentable? Since the kalpic disaster, we monks have regarded the Tripitaka (the three baskets of Buddhist scriptures) as if it were in the Dragon Palace, and without the hands and eyes of a Bodhisattva, one cannot delve deeply into it. Long closed in large cabinets, accumulating dust and locked away, no one can unfold its topics. It is deeply pitiful. Now, I will briefly extract the essential words of the Chan (Zen) masters of our Shu region, divide them into three categories, and publish them together in a book. I hope that later learners will find it convenient to study and discuss, and that the coal and ink will not be mixed up. This is also like a muddy road that can lead to the clouds, and a small ditch that can lead to the vast sea. I, having a humble position in the lineage of the ancestors, cannot bear to stand by and watch. The perfect and unobstructed understanding of the exoteric and esoteric teachings is unheard of. It is like the eyes being able to discern the finest hair in autumn, but not being able to see one's own face; the hair being able to soothe the qi (vital energy) and blood, but not being able to clear its own knots. Therefore, knowing the beauty and ugliness of the face is the power of a clear mirror; untangling the curves and straightness of the hair is the merit of a mysterious comb. The fragrance of conduct is the foundation of morality; the revitalization of discipline is the light of the Zen lamp. Therefore, from the group of old seniors, they are good at using the spirit of courage. Alas, I, a young one, have not drawn the Zen bow, and the wisdom sword is not sharp enough, timid and not advancing.

【English Translation】 English version To realize the true suchness, seeing one's nature is to understand everything. However, those intricate and thorny sentences emerge more and more, like bees brewing honey from hundreds of flowers, or ants threading silk through nine-holed pearls. When tasting the sweetness of honey, one should be grateful for the bees' hard work; when admiring the beauty of pearls, one should praise the ants' ingenuity. Now, suppose there is someone who does not like sweets, nor does he like pearls, and he does not have a fondness for language and words, then what is the use of this collection for him? I think that those who detest this problem cannot reflect on themselves. The guest retreated in shame. Not long after, Chan Master Jue Ling (Jué Líng, a person's name) came down from his meditation couch, gesticulating and stamping his feet, stroking his beard and sighing, 'This lamp light surpasses the brightness of the sun and moon, and it must be circulated in the Dharma-ending Age, showing sincerity to hundreds of generations to come. Chan Master Jue Fan (Jué Fàn, a person's name) wrote a eulogy for Shishuang Cizu (Shíshuāng Cízǔ): 'I observe Ciming (Cí Míng, a person's name), with his outstanding and extraordinary appearance, doing things that do not fall into the trap of the mundane or the sacred, reviving the declining Linji (Lín Jì) sect (Lín Jì Zōng, a Buddhist sect) with laughter, and scolding Huanglong (Huáng Lóng) sect (Huáng Lóng Zōng, a Buddhist sect) to cut off the mind of stealing. Looking at his actions, he leaves no trace. In less than three generations, he is regarded as a standard.' As the saying goes, 'After writing a character three times, a crow can become a horse.' This saying can be used to describe great changes. The former master manifested in the Dharma-ending Age, during a time of turmoil, meditating peacefully amidst thousands of troops, and preaching the Dharma in the tiger's den and demon palace, also doing things that do not fall into the trap of the mundane or the sacred. The only one who received the true transmission of the former master is my Dharma brother Zhang (Zhāng) of Zhao Jue Temple (Zhāo Jué Sì, a temple name). He upholds an earnest heart for seeking the Dharma, and practices diligently and realistically. Nearing ninety years old, he receives guests from all directions, and his energy is still abundant. For the expedient methods of teaching according to the occasion, he has collected the knowledge of ancient and modern times in Sichuan, as well as the valuable experiences of high monks or those who once served as officials and laypeople, treasuring these secrets for more than twenty years, and compiling them into a book called 'Jinjiang Zen Lamp'. He wants to have the same nostril as the ancient eminent monks of hundreds of generations ago, and walk hand in hand; he also hopes that after thousands of years, the dragons and elephants of the ten directions can open their true eyes and illuminate the dark paths. This karmic connection is no small benefit. Deyu (Dé Yù, a person's name) regrets that his talent is shallow and his virtue is weak, and he cannot help him in the slightest, and it is also contrary to the former master's practice, not achieving consistency.

In the winter of the Guiyou year of the Kangxi reign (1693 AD), I ordered my nephew Zhulang of Qingcheng Mountain to buy a boat and go east to Lengyan Temple in Jiahe to engrave the Longzang Sutra with accompanying booklets for circulation in the world. He temporarily docked the boat in Guyu, folded the sails to visit me, and showed me the draft. It was during my spare time from entertaining guests that I respectfully read it by lamplight. Truly, it is a rare and wonderful encounter after the calamity in Sichuan. How could I remain silent? This is precisely the intention of my elder brother and nephew to protect the wisdom-life of the Dharma, which is both profound and earnest. The essence of breaking into a smile fills the entire Five Heavens (referring to the regions where the Buddha's teachings spread). Since Jiangcha (a legendary raft traveling between the sea and the Milky Way) separated the jade waves (referring to sea waves), it began to spread widely in China. Therefore, the golden rooster carrying millet (a metaphor for bringing good fortune) and the colt trampling on people (a metaphor for not following the rules), the most important thing is to see the truth (achieve enlightenment), followed by experience. Therefore, the Five Houses (of Chan Buddhism) were able to flourish. Those who are poisoned by this, their illness is deeply rooted. Even remote places know about the gate of enlightenment (Wumen), and a peasant woman feeding her child presumptuously expounds the essentials of the Dharma. Accumulating the mixed content of what is transmitted, it is imperative to report the descendants of the transmission, so-and-so is the teacher's lineage, so-and-so is the direct descendant. A person from a certain state, a god descended in a certain era. It is hoped that the fortune of the Dharma will not disrupt the advocacy, and the reputation will spread even further. Like Deshang (Deshang, a Chan master of the Tang Dynasty) and Linji (Linji, a Chan master of the Tang Dynasty), with great capacity and great function, they have the freedom to kill or give life, without the help of external learning. After the Five Dynasties, the eloquence of debate became deeper and deeper, often overturning and refuting from the scholastic and rational caves. This is a monk who instead carries the air of a scholar. The true style of Chan became scattered, starting from here. Every time I read related documents, I sigh incessantly, and thus I am determined to exhaustively compile this book. The way of our ancestral teachers in the transmission in China began in the Liang Dynasty (502-557 AD), flourished in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), and shone brightly in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). During this period, many people emerged who were skilled in writing and knowledgeable. After the late Emperor Huaizong passed away, the flames of war raged, and good and bad were destroyed together. Perhaps because the war is separated, it is difficult to collect information, and I hope that people who know the situation will inform me, so that the Buddha-dharma will flourish in China like a golden rooster carrying millet. Refuting Errors
The 'Refutation of Errors' of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) was written by Dharma Master Fang. Dharma Master Pan of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) compiled the 'Comprehensive Records', forcefully citing Dharma Master Fang's words to criticize Chan Master Song's established ancestral lineage chart, using the Chan Sutra as evidence. This is completely untrue. It claims that Venerable Simha (the twenty-fourth patriarch Simha) encountered disaster and had no transmission. Alas, Buddhist disciples compete to argue right and wrong, like the worms in the lion's body, not coming from outside. Tracing back to the correct transmission of Vasumitra (the twentieth patriarch Vasumitra), he should have been ranked seventh, but he was omitted, and Maitreya (the twelfth patriarch Maitreya) was mistakenly used to fill his position, as if thinking there would be no one later. Moreover, Venerable Simha possessed the power of knowing past lives, and beforehand entrusted the great Dharma to Vasasita (the twenty-fifth patriarch Vasasita), Vasasita transmitted it to Ananta (the twenty-sixth patriarch Ananta), Ananta transmitted it to Prajnatara (the twenty-seventh patriarch Prajnatara), and Prajnatara transmitted it to Bodhidharma (the first patriarch Bodhidharma), totaling twenty-eight generations, as clear as the bright sun. Correction of Errors
In the 'Chronicles of the Patriarchs of the West' in the Fo Zu Tong Ji (佛祖統紀), 末田地 (Maitreyanatha) is recorded as a collateral descendant of 阿難 (Ananda). It is recorded as the fourth, which is an error.

Because of the banditry at the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), only Sichuan lasted the longest, fearing the loss of the genealogy and lineage without basis. The rules for collection are slightly based on the examples of the Record of Pointing at the Moon, Ratnakuta Sutra, and other books. The ancestral branches of the past dynasties are from the same source, without analyzing the five schools.
