傳燈錄云。古佛應世。綿歷無窮。不可以周知而悉數也。故近譚賢劫。有千如來。暨于釋迦。但紀七佛。案長阿含經云。七佛精進力。放光滅闇冥。各各坐樹下。于中成正覺。又曼殊室利。為七佛祖師。金華善慧大土。登松山頂行道。感七佛引前。維摩接后。今之撰述。斷自七佛而下。故溯流於莊嚴劫。七佛以來。號至釋迦文降靈之後。為天竺中華傳法之始祖也。住世四十九年。后告弟子摩訶迦葉。吾以清凈法眼涅槃妙心實相無相微妙正法。不立文字教外別傳。密付于汝。汝當護持。並來阿難。副貳傳化。無令斷絕。由是相繼二十八代。傳至菩提達磨。后達磨復持佛祖一枝正法眼藏。並世尊衣缽。航海西來。東至嵩山少林寺。面壁九年。又為東土之始祖也。於是繩繩蟄蟄。代代不絕。二祖有慧可大祖禪師。三祖有僧璨鑒智禪師。四祖有道信大醫禪師。五祖有弘忍大滿禪師。六祖有慧能大鑒禪師。自六祖下。並出兩枝。一曰青原行思禪師。一曰南嶽懷讓禪師。其後列五宗者。又以二師。為始祖也。青原下出石頭希遷禪師。遷下復出二枝。一曰藥山惟儼禪師。

【English Translation】 English version 卍 New Continued Canon, Volume 86, No. 1603, Zimen Shipu (Genealogy of the Monastic Order) No. 1603 Zhongnan Mountain Tianlong Assembly Zimen Shipu (Genealogy of the Monastic Order) Shishi Yuanliu Wuzong Shipu Dingzu Tu Xu (Preface to the Genealogy Chart of the Five Schools of the釋氏 (Sakya Clan) Origin) The Transmission of the Lamp says: 'Ancient Buddhas appeared in the world for immeasurable eons, impossible to fully know and count. Therefore, in recent times, during the Bhadrakalpa (Auspicious Aeon), there were a thousand Tathagatas, but only seven Buddhas are recorded up to Shakyamuni. According to the Dirgha Agama Sutra, the seven Buddhas, with their power of diligence, emitted light and extinguished darkness, each sitting under a tree, attaining perfect enlightenment within it. Furthermore, Manjushri Bodhisattva is the teacher of the seven Buddhas. The great virtuous earth善慧 (Shanhui) of Jinhua ascended Song Mountain peak to practice, and felt the seven Buddhas leading in front, with Vimalakirti receiving behind. This compilation begins from the seven Buddhas downwards. Therefore, tracing back to the Adornment Kalpa, from the seven Buddhas onwards, until after the descent of Shakyamuni Buddha, he is regarded as the first ancestor of Dharma transmission in India (天竺) and China (中華). After residing in the world for forty-nine years, he told his disciple Mahakashyapa: 'I entrust to you the pure Dharma-eye, the wondrous mind of Nirvana, the subtle and wonderful Right Dharma of true form and no-form, which does not rely on words, and is transmitted separately outside the teachings. You should protect and uphold it, and let Ananda assist you in its transmission and transformation, so that it is not cut off.' Thus, successively through twenty-eight generations, it was transmitted to Bodhidharma. Later, Bodhidharma brought the branch of the Buddha-ancestor's 正法眼藏 (Right Dharma-eye Treasury), along with the World-Honored One's robe and bowl, sailed west, and arrived east at Shaolin Temple on Mount Song, facing the wall for nine years, and became the first ancestor of the Eastern Land. Thus, it continued unbroken, generation after generation. The Second Ancestor was Great Master Huike Chan, the Third Ancestor was Sengcan Jianzhi Chan Master, the Fourth Ancestor was Daoxin Great Physician Chan Master, the Fifth Ancestor was Hongren Great Perfection Chan Master, and the Sixth Ancestor was Huineng Great Mirror Chan Master. From the Sixth Ancestor onwards, two branches emerged, one being Qingyuan Xingsi Chan Master, and the other being Nanyue Huairang Chan Master. The five schools listed thereafter take these two Chan Masters as their first ancestors. From Qingyuan Xingsi Chan Master came Shitou Xiqian Chan Master, and from Xiqian Chan Master came two branches, one being Yaoshan Weiyan Chan Master.'

Time:
In the Mengxia (early summer) of the year Guiwei (1703 AD) during the Kangxi reign of the Great Qing Dynasty, on the day of Buddha's birth. The ancient Panlong Mountain Temple, located fifteen li southeast of Huazhou City in Xi'an Prefecture, Shaanxi Province, and approximately twenty li into the Meng Hu Valley of the Zhongnan Mountains, was revitalized. This temple is the lineage holder of the 33rd generation of the Linji (Rinzai) orthodox school, the Dharma successor of the Venerable Zisu Chaoyuan. Furthermore, the Tianlong Mountain Temple was newly established fifteen li southwest of Huazhou City in Xi'an Prefecture, Shaanxi Province, approximately twenty li into the Chi Di Valley (also known as Ma Jia Valley, now named Chi De Valley) of the Zhongnan Mountains. The Chan Master Xunlei Mingxi, the 34th generation of the Linji orthodox school, along with monastics and laypeople from all directions, respectfully compiled and published this work after bathing, burning incense, and bowing their heads.

Chart of Ancestors

Two branches emerged from the Sixth Ancestor. One is Chan Master Qingyuan Xingsi [○─○], Shitou Xiqian. Two branches emerged from Xiqian again. One is Yaoshan Weiyan [○─○], Yunyan Tansheng [○─○], Dongshan Liangjie [○─○], Chan Master Caoshan Benji. From this, the Caodong (Soto) school was established.
Another branch from Xiqian is Tianhuang Daowu [○─○], Longtan Chongxin [○─○], Deshan Xuanjian [○─○], Xuefeng Yicun. Two branches emerged from Yicun again. One is Xuansha Shibei [○─○], Luohan Guichen [○─○], Chan Master Qingliang Wenyi. From this, the Fayan (Fa-yen) school was established.
Another branch from Yicun is Chan Master Yunmen Wenyan. From this, the Yunmen (Unmon) school was established.
The above three schools are all descendants of Qingyuan.

As for the others, those who do not belong to the orthodox branches, who have not inherited in the manner of 'correct branches and correct leaves,' but instead rely on their own temporary family styles, prospering randomly and establishing their own schools, there are still more than thirty families. It is not known from which sect they branched off, and so far there is no way to verify. These have not been forcibly included. Later generations must understand the orthodox transmission and must not get involved in other branches.
