Monk Guo Zeng
His Dharma name was Xiugang. He was a son of the Fang family in Minzhong. He became a monk at a young age. He was naturally intelligent and learned without much effort. He treated others with respect and served his teacher with courtesy. One day, the teacher saw him and asked, 'The other day you were sick, and everyone said you were about to die. What did you think?' (Guo Zeng) replied, 'Originally there is no birth, how can there be death?' The teacher said, 'Since you know there is no birth, where did you come from?' (Guo Zeng) loudly recited the Buddha's name. The teacher said, 'Where will you go?' (Guo Zeng) placed his hands together in front of his chest and remained silent for a long time. The teacher said, 'What is the matter within?' (Guo Zeng) then replied with a verse: 'The original pure essence is thus, responding to circumstances with skillful and complete wisdom. Turning the light inward, it transcends past and present, truly wonderful, all-pervading, beyond words.' The teacher said, 'So it is, so it is.' You should reach the state of simplicity yourself. Then he entrusted a verse: 'Directly pointing to Xiugang at the opportune moment, the essence is revealed as true and constant, without concealment. Today I entrust you, cherish it well. When the time comes, you must follow the ancestral transmission.'
Monk De Yuan
His Dharma name was Mingjing. He was a son of the Shi family in Fuqing County. He sincerely went to pay respects and asked for the true essence. The teacher said, 'Our Buddha is greatly compassionate and equally expounds the Three Vehicles and Five Teachings, saving beings according to their capacity. Finally, he held up a flower to the assembly, a special transmission outside the teachings, the wonderful mind of Nirvana, the true aspect of no-aspect, entrusted to Mahākāśyapa (摩訶迦葉). Passed down through generations, until Bodhidharma (達磨) came to the Eastern Land, directly pointing to the human mind, seeing one's nature and becoming a Buddha. You yourself turn the light inward, understand your original mind, see your original nature, neither form nor emptiness, neither middle nor outside, penetrating the ten directions, interpenetrating the three periods of time, hundreds of thousands of samādhi (三昧), countless wonderful functions like the sands of the Ganges, not apart from the present moment.' (De Yuan) had some understanding, and then said a verse: 'Originally pure and inconceivable, adapting to circumstances, right in the present moment. Samādhi manifests, penetrating the great path, emitting light and manifesting auspicious signs, wonderfully rare.' The teacher said, 'You should protect and maintain the complete and bright seed wisdom.' And entrusted it.

【English Translation】 English version A verse. It singularly transmits the direct pointing of mind to mind. The true suchness (the true nature of things) without form manifests clearly and brightly. Flowers and fruits manifest together, the three contemplations are interpenetrating. The ten directions are vast and clear, extending from ancient times to the present, without lack or excess.' (Dehong) suddenly had an awakening and spoke a verse, saying, 'Originally still and silent, the essence is thus. Wonderful function moves freely, letting go and gathering. The enlightened nature is empty and profound, originally without form. Expedient and real are both integrated, responding infinitely.' The teacher then approved, 'Take good care of yourself.' He further instructed with a verse: 'A branch is picked up, appearing grandly. Predestined connections meet, entrusted to Yuejiang. I urge you to cherish talents well. The monk Guokui (Dazhou), son of the Zheng family of Sanshan, sought instruction on the great matter of cause and condition. The master said, 'Come forward.' Guokui stepped forward. The master said, 'Is it big or small?' He replied, 'I do not understand this meaning.' The master said, 'If one is of superior faculties and intelligence, upon seeing and hearing instruction, they can awaken and enter. If not, then one should strive diligently and sincerely to study. Suddenly, the clouds of delusion will scatter, and the moon of the mind will be round and bright. Only then will one know that one has a great matter, equal to the Buddha without difference.' Guokui then said, 'Originally, it is complete.' The master said, 'What is original?' He replied, 'Originally, there is no movement or stillness, coming to respond to the ten directions.' The master said, 'Long have you been silent on this essential point, until it is truly pure.' 【English Translation】 English version The Zen master sat and observed. (Mingyu) asked, 'Do you understand?' (Mingyu) replied, 'I have not grasped the meaning of this.' The Zen master said, 'The ultimate path pervades the world, and no one is without it. Just constantly reflect and awaken, and constantly remind yourself. How is your mind-nature different from that of the ancient sages?' From this, enter into enlightenment, and you will be able to expand freely. (Mingyu) suddenly had a breakthrough and immediately spoke a verse: 'Tathata (真如, the true nature of things) is originally peaceful, manifesting throughout the great thousand worlds. Serene and still, it is always pure and clean, the expedient and real (權實) are profound within the essence.' The Zen master affirmed, saying, 'It is so.' The Zen master added, 'Utterly pure and exquisite.' Be mindful of this, be mindful of this, until the nature of your thought is like empty space, and your heart is like the earth. The sun of wisdom and the moon of insight will penetrate and illuminate perfectly. Only then will you know that the great path is originally complete, extending from ancient times to the present, with nothing added or subtracted.' (Guocheng) had an understanding upon hearing this and immediately spoke a verse: 'The essence is originally without form, suchness (如如, tathata) constantly appears before us. It is eternally imperishable from ancient times to the present, universally responding with boundless wonder.' He sought the Zen master's instruction on the essentials of the Dharma. The Zen master said, 'Take the mind as the principle, and enlightenment as the rule. The wondrous essence of empty space is originally natural. It does not belong to existence or non-existence, and it is originally neither moving nor still. It penetrates the source of a thousand ages and creates the model of all phenomena. It remains peaceful even when the cosmic fire (劫火) destroys the world, and the whole body is revealed when the Dharma is about to disappear. A single ray of spiritual light is originally complete. It is not diminished in ordinary beings, nor is it increased in sages. Just do not hate or love, and you will understand clearly.' (Guorong) suddenly had an understanding.

Pervading the entire realm of sand, merging without obstruction. Neither defiled nor pure, the awakened nature is empty and spiritual.' The Zen Master Yin Ke (seal of approval) said: 'Just so. Cherish and protect this pure essence.' And further instructed with a verse: 'This opportunity aligns with true suchness. Then believe that the path of no-birth is not false. The perfect and harmonious three truths are without hindrance. I entrust you that when the time comes, you will inherit the ancestral lineage.' The Monk Guo Man (Guo Man) Dharma name Tian Zi (Tian Zi), was the son of the Ye family of Min County. He sought instruction from Zen Master Da An. He prostrated himself before the master and asked: 'What is this great cause and condition appearing in the world?' The master said: 'Come forward.' Guo Man took a step forward. The master said: 'Do you understand?' He replied: 'I do not understand, please have mercy and instruct me.' The master said: 'Originally it is neither two nor three, just let you see at this moment. The rituals of all Buddhas, the correct Dharma eye of the ancestral masters. When conditions meet, directly reveal it, realize that the sea of self-nature is vast and boundless. Perfect and harmonious without hindrance, pure without waves.' Guo Man, upon hearing these words, his self-nature became vast and clear, his mind enlightened. He then spoke a verse, saying: 'Alone it reveals, dignified and upright, from ancient times to the present. Without form, in stillness, awakening is complete and bright. Pervading the ten directions, penetrating the three truths. The actual ground of principle, cutting off subtle dust.' The master immediately approved, saying: 'Cherish and protect it well.' And further instructed with a verse: 'The Buddhas and ancestors personally transmitted the mind-seal, lamp after lamp continuing the flame to this day. Entrusting this heroic spirit, you should respect it. When the time comes, awaken future generations.' The Monk Guo Xian (Guo Xian) Dharma name Ben Ying (Ben Ying), was the second son of the Han family of Minzhong Zu Wuhou Qianbing. He sought instruction from Zen Master Zhen Kong. He paid respects to the master, begging for instruction on the essential Dharma. The master gazed directly at him for a long time. He asked: 'Do you understand?' Guo Xian suddenly had an awakening. He then spoke a verse, saying: 'Suchness unmoving, the original nature is empty and spiritual. Responding and merging, pervading the lands and dust. Suddenly realizing no-birth, transcending the Dharma realm. Following the square and round, understanding true brightness.' The master approved, saying: 'Just so. Cherish and protect this pure essence.' And further instructed with a verse: 'A special transmission outside the teachings, the mind-method from ancient times. Ancestor after ancestor, passing on to each other. I now entrust you, you should cherish it. Lamp after lamp continuing the flame, illuminating the ancestral courtyard.' 【English Translation】 English version: This is the true Great Path. The Master raised his finger to indicate it and asked, 'Do you understand?' The monk replied, 'I do not know.' The Master said, 'You are truly on the path. You should be mindful in your daily life, do not dwell on merit and position, and do not chase after sounds and sights. The key to your original nature is to understand, be mindful of it constantly, and thoroughly penetrate it. Only then will you know that the Great Path is without obstruction, open and free, and leisurely like Maitreya (Maitreya, the future Buddha).' Run (Run, a name) suddenly had an insight upon hearing these words, and then spoke a verse: 'The wondrous and ethereal spirit is always present, past and present. The expedient and harmonious are in the person. The entire Suchness gives rise to the sun of wisdom, returning to the origin and source, thoroughly clear.' The Master said, 'Very good, take good care of it and cultivate purity.' He then entrusted him with another verse: 'True emptiness neither goes nor comes, cannot be kneaded into a ball, cannot be pushed away. Past karmic connections meet and receive this intention. I entrust you to take over the talent in due time.'
Monk Guoming (Guoming, a name)
His Dharma name was Huian (Huian, a Dharma name), and he was the son of the Xue family of Fuqing County. He bowed to the Master and requested instruction on unsurpassed Bodhi. The Master said, 'The unsurpassed wonderful path is not something that can be expressed in words, nor does it have any name or form. The spiritual light is without dwelling, completely detached from the six roots and their objects, pure without remainder, and freely flowing. This is what you originally possess, not something obtained from the outside.' Guoming (Guoming, a name) suddenly had an insight, and then spoke a verse: 'Bodhi originally is empty and spiritual, constantly manifesting great light. Suchness pervades the Dharma realm, pure and freely flowing, illuminating the past and present.' The Master then approved of him, saying, 'Take good care of yourself.' He then entrusted him with another verse: 'The Dharma seal of the Buddhas and Patriarchs directly points to the mind, realizing and inheriting to Guoming. Cherish and cultivate the pure and true flower, when the time comes, carry on the ancestral garden with compassion.'

Serene and pure, incomparable, illuminating the universe, without a speck of dust.' The Master said, 'What is it that illuminates?' Yuanjing (Yuanjing, a name) raised one hand. The Master said, 'What is the place of purity?' Yuanjing (Yuanjing, a name) withdrew his hand and placed it in front of his chest, remaining silent for a long time. The Master said, 'Thus, thus, cultivate true purity.' He then entrusted him with another verse: 'Holding up a flower to show'

【English Translation】 English version Coming from no-birth, how can there be old age and sickness? The awakened nature is firm and strong; a knowing confidant can attest to it. This is the single transmission of subtle meaning, the perfect function universally responding. It fully manifests the essence and function, harmonizing wisdom and samadhi. Directly approach Bodhi (enlightenment), pointing the way to the center and correctness. (Han) leaped up and bowed, saying, 'Receiving this profound meaning, it deeply resonates with my foolish heart. Originally, there is no old or young; the Way knows no West or East.' The master said, 'Since there is no old or young, West or East, what is the principle?' (Han) joined his palms and recited the Buddha's name. The master said, 'Cherish yourself.' He further instructed with a verse: 'Earnestly contemplate Amitabha (Buddha of Infinite Light), diligently cultivate, and suddenly awaken to the supreme subtle mystery. Fortunate karmic connections meet and continue the fragrance of Dharma. I entrust you that when the time comes, after awakening, manifest the extraordinary.' Practitioner Guo Ti (Practitioner, named Guo Ti) Dharma name Dayong, he was a son of the Lin family from Gaohu in Southern Fujian. One day, the master saw him and asked, 'What business do you engage in during your daily life?' He replied, 'I constantly recite the Buddha's name.' The master said, 'Where is the Buddha?' (Ti) joined his palms to his chest, standing silently. The master said, 'What is this auspicious light?' (Ti) stepped forward and bowed, then spoke a verse: 'Formless and traceless, wonderfully boundless, encompassing the three thousand great thousand worlds. Responding to the occasion, truly authentic, Prajna (wisdom) constantly exists, like a sky without night.' The master affirmed, 'It is so.' Praising him for being good at maintaining his true and pure nature. He further instructed with a verse: 'From Vulture Peak (where Buddha preached), a branch of spring is picked. I now impart it to you, just the same. Only I entrust you, virtuous one, to respect it. When the time comes, continue the fragrance of Dharma, repaying the ancestral wind.' Monk Ruguo (Monk, named Ruguo) Dharma name Sanzhi, he was a native of Jiangxi. With incense in hand, he came to pay homage, determined to seek true confirmation. The master immediately knocked his teeth three times and asked, 'Do you understand?' He replied, 'I do not understand, please instruct me.' The master said, 'Truth refers to the Dharmakaya (Dharma body) being pure, equal to emptiness. Confirmation refers to wisdom and conduct being perfect and subtle, harmoniously unobstructed. Benefit from it at all times, without going through countless kalpas (extremely long periods of time). You inherently possess it; do not give rise to doubt.' (Guo) suddenly had an awakening and immediately said, 'Originally complete, no longer seeking externally. Immediately presented, truly inconceivable.' The master, seeing this, affirmed, 'It is so, it is so.' He further instructed with a verse: 'The principle of settling the mind before the rock of Shaoshi Mountain (where Bodhidharma faced the wall), continuing the flame of Dharma until three kalpas (extremely long periods of time). I now entrust you, you should cherish it. When the time comes, glorify the ancestors, and after awakening, manifest the extraordinary.'

He returned and reported this to his teacher. The teacher said, 'The mind-seal transmitted by the Patriarchs (referring to the sudden enlightenment transmitted mind-to-mind) cannot be continued without wisdom.' He was doubtful for a year. One day, the knot of doubt suddenly broke, and he congratulated himself, saying, 'It was nothing else.' Then he presented a verse, saying, 'Originally there is no up or down, the perfect light responds to the empty space. Interpenetrating and pervading the Dharma realm, silent illumination unites with the true lineage.' The Patriarch examined him in detail and approved him, saying, 'Take good care of yourself.' He further instructed him with a verse: 'The mind-seal of the Buddhas and Patriarchs continues to this day, the subtle, perfect, and pure radiance continues the supreme vehicle. Then he presented a verse, saying, 'Silent and still, it is originally thus, responding to conditions and revealing the whole manifestation. He further instructed him with a verse: 'The ancestral seal of Cao Xi (referring to the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng) is imprinted on the source of the mind, suddenly entering the ocean of Dharma and ceasing the wild running of deluded thoughts. One day, he entered the abbot's room, begging for the Great Way. The Master remained silent for a long time, then said, 'Do you understand?' He replied, 'Not yet awakened.' The Master said, 'The Great pervades the universe; the Tao penetrates the Dharma realm. This is your inherent nature, neither two nor separate. If you understand this meaning, it is not obtained from outside.' Zhengju suddenly had an awakening upon hearing these words, and immediately spoke a verse: 'The opportunity is uniquely revealed, without concealment, the Great Way is impartial, its essence and function are complete. The light is vast and clear, pervading all realms, originally pure, eternally existent.' The Master then examined and questioned him, and approved of his understanding, advising him to deeply cultivate and eliminate impurities, making it pure. He entrusted him with a verse: 'One flower from Shaolin (Shaolin, referring to Bodhidharma, the first patriarch of Zen) connects five leaves, the Udumbara flower (Udumbara flower, a legendary auspicious flower that blooms once every three thousand years) flourishes, spreading throughout the great thousand worlds. I am revealing it to you today, you should respect it, when the time comes, you must receive later talents.'
The monk Minggui
Whose Dharma name was Honghui, was the son of the Zheng family of Fengshan in Southern Fujian. He studied with Zen Master Dachao and sought instruction from Zen Master Dazhi. One day, he entered the abbot's room of Zen Master Zhenkong, begging for the Dharma essence. The Zen Master pointed to a lotus flower and showed it to him, saying, 'When the flower blooms and you see the Buddha, I will tell you the Tao.' Minggui had not yet understood this meaning, and cited the example of Zen Master Shangzhi. The Zen Master recited the Buddha's name once, but Minggui still did not understand. He hoped the Master would enlighten him. The Master said, 'The true Prajna (Prajna, Sanskrit for wisdom) manifests instantly upon contact with things.' Minggui still did not awaken, and after doubting for more than a year, he suddenly had an awakening, and immediately presented a verse: 'Originally a pure thing, how could it be bound by the mud? Being in water, yet not touching the water, when the flower blooms, one can see the Buddha.' The Zen Master said, 'What is pure?'

【English Translation】 English version: (Gui) joined his hands in front of his chest and remained silent for a long time. The Patriarch said, 'How can one immediately see the Buddha?' (Gui) stepped forward and bowed. The Patriarch said, 'So it is, so it is. Take good care of yourself and you should inherit great wisdom.' Later, he gave a verse: 'The original lineage has no coming or going, responding to all realms. I now entrust it to you to guard, and when the time comes, receive future talents.'
This Guo Jun (Dharma name Da Yun) is the son of the Hong family of San Shan. He practiced diligently with fasting and studied the supreme vehicle. Suddenly, he had an insight and presented a verse saying: 'Pointing to and reciting Amitabha (Buddha of the Western Pure Land), one realizes the original face. Neither sound nor color, the spiritual essence appears. Serene and still, it connects the past and present. The essence and function are perfectly integrated, without a speck of dust.' The Patriarch questioned and approved his understanding, urging him to delve deeply and achieve pure and subtle states. He also gave a verse: 'Principle and phenomena are both manifested, with a mind free from attachment. Perfect function universally responds, connecting all lands and dust. Originally pure and unpolluted, when the time comes, continue to shine and illuminate the ancestral temple.'
This Guo Tong (Dharma name Cheng An) is the son of the Gao family of Min County. He had been fasting for many years. One day, he pondered: 'The World Honored One twirled a flower (Shakyamuni Buddha showing a flower at the Vulture Peak Assembly), and Bodhidharma pacified his mind (Bodhidharma facing the wall to pacify his mind). The Patriarchs have transmitted it from generation to generation, mind to mind. My mind has not yet understood, what shall I use to certify? I have wasted my life until old age, confused my mind and lost my nature.' Therefore, he earnestly and respectfully entered the Patriarch's room and prostrated before the seat. The Patriarch saw him and asked, 'What are you doing every day?' He replied, 'I constantly recite Amitabha (Buddha of the Western Pure Land).' The Patriarch said, 'Where are you right now?' He replied, 'Joining my palms and smiling.' The Patriarch said, 'Guo Tong illuminates the Dharma realm, you should turn your light inward and enter samadhi.' He replied, 'Because of the compassionate and benevolent teachings, I have realized seeing the nature and attaining the One Vehicle.' Then he spoke a verse: 'The Thus Come, unmoving essence is peaceful and serene, the true nature is harmonious and transcends words. The true form of Amitabha (Buddha of the Western Pure Land) is about to appear, compassion and wisdom are perfect and illuminate the universe.' The Patriarch said, 'How is it when it appears?' (Guo Zhi) recited the name of Buddha once. The Patriarch said, 'What is this true Amitabha (Buddha of the Western Pure Land)?' (Guo Tong) stepped forward, joined his palms, and remained silent for a long time. The Patriarch approved his understanding, telling him to take good care of himself and cultivate true purity (etc.). He also gave a verse: 'The Dharma seal of Cao Xi has been transmitted from ancient times to the present, fortunate to meet and continue the fragrance of the past life. Entrusting the confidant to cherish and guard, cultivate the true and pure essence.'

【English Translation】 English version Now there is Guozhu, with the Dharma name Zhihai, who is the son of the Jiang family of Jianyang County. He has observed precepts and fasted for many years, reciting the Buddha's name and practicing Chan meditation, hoping to attain peaceful rest. Having heard the Master's direct pointing, he saw his nature and clarified his mind. If it were not so, it would not be ultimate. Therefore, with a reverent heart, he respectfully entered the Master's room and prostrated before the Master's seat. The Master asked, 'Where are you from?' He replied, 'Beholding the face reveals the whole body; what Dharma is spoken in the midst of time?' He also replied, 'Amitabha (Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light) is not stained by dust.' Then he spoke a verse: 'Reciting the Buddha's name and pursuing the mind, I then realized it is the very person. The Mani (Mani, jewel) is reverently offered, pure and perfectly bright of itself.' The Master asked, 'Where is the Mani now?' Guozhu recited the Buddha's name once. The Master said, 'The dust is not asked for now, so where is Amitabha?' Guozhu stepped forward, put his palms together, and remained silent for a long time. The Master approved his understanding, saying, 'You should take good care of it, and be truly sincere and pure.' He also instructed with a verse: 'At the Vulture Peak Assembly, the Mani is offered, sudden enlightenment and perfect brightness prove Bodhi (Bodhi, enlightenment). The ancestral way connects fragrance and the lamp continues to burn, cultivating true purity and awakening to the wonder later.' Now there is Guohao, with the Dharma name Yubo, who is the son of the Gao family of Min County. He has observed precepts and fasted for many years. One day, he contemplated that the Sixth Patriarch (Sixth Patriarch Huineng) universally spoke and revealed the Maha Prajna (Mahaprajna, great wisdom), harmonizing the true meaning, the Dharma seal is passed down, and the direct pointing is transmitted singularly. Therefore, he especially aroused a reverent heart and personally entered the Master's room, knocking on the seat to ask for instruction. The Master asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am Guohao.' The Master said, 'Guohao pervades the Dharma realm; you should return to the source and enter Samadhi (Samadhi, concentration).' He replied, 'The original nature initiates the subtle mystery, suddenly realizing true awakening is no birth.' And he spoke a verse: 'Receiving the Master's instruction on Amitabha, sudden enlightenment is in an instant. The original true awakening is wonderful, the face shines Svaha (Svaha, perfection).' The Master asked, 'Where is Amitabha now?' Guohao stepped forward and offered it with both hands. The Master said, 'What about when the light returns?' Guohao folded his hands in front of his chest and remained silent for a long time. The Master then approved, saying, 'Take good care of it and cultivate true purity.' He also instructed with a verse: 'The robe and Dharma of Huangmei were entrusted to Neng, awakening and entering the perfect school to continue the fragrance. Entrusting to a confidant should be respected, cultivating true purity and illuminating the ancestral court.'

The master saw him and asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'A Buddhist disciple who observes precepts.' The master said, 'Where is the Buddha now?' He replied, 'The majestic light pervades the entire Taixu (Great Void).' The master spoke a verse: 'The ancient path is truly flat and even, pure and free from the slightest dust. Coming and going is free and unhindered, only the enlightened see the true brightness.' The master said, 'What is this majestic light?' (Guo En) shouted 'Blue Sky!' The master said, 'What is true brightness?' (Guo En) stepped forward to inquire and then returned to his original position. The master said, 'So it is. You should cherish and support it well, cultivating purity.' (Et cetera). He further instructed with a verse: 'The wooden ball of Snow Mountain still exists today, its round mechanism is lively and continues the fragrant lineage. Here is Zheng Chen (Dharma name of the monk), Also known as Qingquan (Another name of the monk), he is the son of the Lin family from Fuqing County. He has been observing precepts and fasting for many years. One day, he heard that various Dharma friends had received the prophecy of Xuzhengzong (Name of a Buddhist school), directly pointing to the mind and seeing the nature, a major cause and condition. (Zheng Chen) felt ashamed. They can understand, why am I so blocked? If I do not awaken now, regret will be in vain. He roused himself with sincerity and personally prostrated before the ancestral room, bowing before the seat. The ancestor saw him and asked, 'Where do you come from?' He replied, 'I beg for your compassion to transmit the true Dharma.' The ancestor said, 'Is the direct instruction concealed?' He replied, 'I begin to realize that it originates from the mind.' The ancestor said, 'You know that it originates from the mind, you should turn your light inward and enter Samadhi (state of meditative consciousness).' He replied, 'Due to the circumstances, I receive this wonderful purpose, I should return to the source and realize the One Vehicle (Ekayana).' Then he spoke a verse: 'The pure nature is originally empty and spiritual, Suchness (Tathata) is wonderfully perfect and bright. Vastly pervading countless worlds, only this true person is revealed.' The ancestor said, 'What is the meaning of the wonderful purpose?' (Zheng Chen) kowtowed three times. The ancestor said, 'How do you return to the source?' (Zheng Chen) clasped his hands in silence and returned to his original position. The ancestor approved, saying, 'So it is. You should protect and maintain it well, until it is truly pure.' He further instructed with a verse: 'Holding up a flower to show the assembly is a small understanding, drinking the light and smiling is a secret transmission. His Dharma name was Wuhuai. He was the son of the Chen family of Min County. He studied with Chan Master Yuanqing and sought instruction from Chan Master Donghui. At that time, he came before me, begging to be shown the true essentials of the Great Path. The master held up his whisk to show him and asked, 'Do you understand?' He replied, 'I do not understand.' The master said, 'Apart from words and language, it is not something that you or I can grasp. Why can't you awaken to what you hear and see?' (Zhenzhi) suddenly understood. He then spoke a verse: 'The essence has no hindrance, universally appearing throughout the countless realms. From ancient times to the present, it is always thus, without loss or destruction.' The master examined his understanding, and his essence and function were in accord. He should deeply purify himself until he reached pure subtlety. He further entrusted him with a verse: 'The flowers at the mortar's mouth bloom fresh to this day, inheriting the fragrance of past lives. Entrusting this to a worthy talent, it should be respected, with great magnanimity, intelligence, and a complete, unified nature.'

Moment to moment, without interruption, the essence and function are always self-evident.' The master examined the truth of his understanding, which was in accordance with the truth and not sought externally. He should eliminate distractions and cultivate a pure nature. He further entrusted him with a verse: 'The Diamond Prajna Paramita (the perfection of wisdom that cuts through delusion), suddenly realizing that it is not to be sought externally. The master examined the truth of his understanding, which was in accordance with the supreme principle. He should deeply cultivate it until it reached perfect clarity. 【English Translation】 English version: One year, he was constantly reciting the Buddha's name. In the midst of stillness and concentration, he suddenly saw an auspicious realm. Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (the Bodhisattva of compassion in Buddhism) appeared, teaching him to recite the Buddha's name, achieving a state of correspondence between mind and mouth. He specially went to the abbot's room, requesting the master to point out the supreme truth. The master said, 'The supreme truth is subtle and profound, far from all vain expectations. Dreams and illusions are unreal and not ultimate. Just turn the light inward and you will suddenly awaken to the true and constant, complete with perfect brightness, originally equal, not obtained from the outside.' (Yuan Dynasty) He suddenly awakened and then spoke a verse: 'The original substance is pure, the light responds to the great thousand worlds. The true and constant nature neither increases nor decreases, the wonderful function pervades before us.' The master questioned him in detail and approved of his understanding, believing that he should maintain sincerity and purity. He further instructed him with a verse: 'The patriarchs directly point, transmitting outside the teachings, the linked fragrance is passed down, until the source of the fruition. I entrust to the worthy one to preserve, cultivate sincerity and purity, so that the essence and function can be complete.' Guo Hui (a personal name) Dharma name Tai Quan (Dharma name), is the son of the Xiao family of Sanshan. He is benevolent by nature and upright in his heart. He has observed precepts for many years, aspiring to Bodhi (Enlightenment). One day, the master saw him and asked, 'What is your name?' He replied, 'Tai Quan.' The master said, 'Tai Quan penetrates the Dharma realm, the ten directions are complete, one true brightness.' He replied, 'The original Buddha is on Grdhrakuta Mountain (Vulture Peak Mountain, where the Buddha preached), one Dharma penetrates and illuminates, all Dharmas penetrate.' The master said, 'What is the one Dharma?' (Hui) loudly recited the Buddha's name. The master said, 'Where is Grdhrakuta Mountain now?' (Hui) put his palms together in front of his chest and remained silent for a long time. The master spoke a verse: 'All forms are non-forms, not stained by dust, pervading the worlds, one true brightness. Entering and exiting step by step, not other things, filling the void, the body of the ancient Buddha.' The master said, 'It is so, you should deeply refine until true purity.' He further instructed him with a verse: 'A branch from Grdhrakuta Mountain is transmitted from afar, beginning like an Utpala (blue lotus) flower blooming in the fire. I entrust it to you today, you should cherish it, wisdom and action merge, to ascend to the upper platform.' Ren Huai (a personal name) Dharma name Yang Shi (Dharma name), is the son of the Weng family of Fuqing County. He studied with Shao Shi Acharya (teacher). One day, contemplating the essentials of Chan Buddhism, he entered the room with incense, begging for direct guidance to the great path. Upon sudden awakening, one feels the Buddha's grace and power, understanding clearly without any constraints. The Zen Master Da'an (Dà ān) affirmed him as such, advising him to maintain this state well. This supreme and pure wonder lies entirely within you. He further instructed him with a verse: 『With a single strike, both the essence and function are revealed; the ultimate Dao (道, the Way) transcends words and language. Fortunate are you to inherit my mantle, cherish and respect it. When the time is right, enlightenment will naturally arise, for you have a karmic connection with the Buddha.』

Seeing forms and hearing sounds, one should naturally return to the source. Without long or short, neither red nor green, pure and clear, that is your original face.』 Zhengming (正明) suddenly awakened and spoke a verse: 『Vast and boundless, encompassing the entire Dharma Realm, fully manifested, pervading the ten directions. Originally a pure essence, auspicious light appears everywhere.』 The Patriarch acknowledged his realization, advising him to deeply cultivate his true purity, and further instructed him with a verse: 『The Dharma from the West, mind to mind transmission, the flame continues, connecting fragrance, extending to Zhengming (正明). He was born with benevolence and wisdom, and he was fair and selfless in his conduct. He disliked meat and fish from a young age, and he loved literature when he grew up. Because his parents died early, he had no way to repay them, so he washed his heart and fasted, sincerely converting to the Holy Truth, wishing his parents could transcend and ascend to heaven, abandoning fame and fortune to study the Dharma. He was tonsured and became a monk at Shuanglong Temple, studying under Zen Master Tiandong. Zen Master Tiandong taught him all the contents of the Miaokong religion. One day, Zheng Di (Dharma name) thought about the saints of the past and the virtuous of the future, all of whom forgot themselves for the sake of the Dharma, and the lamp of the Dharma was passed down from generation to generation, shining on ancient times and illuminating today. What kind of person am I? If I cannot understand my own spirituality now, I will regret it in vain in the future. So he entered the meditation room with sincerity. Zen Master Tiandong saw him and asked, 'What is your name?' Zheng Di (Dharma name) replied, 'Zheng Di (Dharma name).' Zen Master Tiandong said, 'Zheng Di (Dharma name) shines brightly, you should cultivate well and wait for the opportunity to come.' Zheng Di (Dharma name) replied, 'Prajna wisdom is inherently intelligent.' From then on, he truly practiced and suddenly realized. So he presented a verse saying: 'The essence is unborn, empty and silent, the perfect light shines universally, the wonderful function is limitless. Suddenly enlightened, freed from the shackles of the world, free and harmonious, happy like a god.' Zen Master Tiandong asked, 'What is universal response?' Zheng Di (Dharma name) shouted loudly, 'Master!' Zen Master Tiandong asked, 'What is the place of freedom?' Zheng Di (Dharma name) put his palms together in front of his chest and remained silent for a long time. Zen Master Tiandong then approved his enlightenment, saying, 'You should maintain it well until you reach the realm of true purity, and you can inherit the mantle of Tiandong in the future.' He also instructed a verse, with the style of the Linji sect: 'The fragrant sect style continues the celebration, inheriting the heroes. I urge you to keep it in mind and cherish it well. When the time is ripe and you are enlightened, sing the song of the patriarch.' This is Zheng Tang (Dharma name), Also known as Jingquan. He was the son of the Zhang family in Fuqing County. He was born with a gentle and kind nature, and he was upright and unyielding in his conduct. He admired benevolence and righteousness, practiced morality, was loyal and trustworthy, and worked hard to practice. His parents died early, and he yearned for the Buddhist path with all his heart. He left the world and became a monk, choosing virtuous people and visiting good teachers and helpful friends, studying under Zen Master Tiandong, and diligently serving the monk Xingdeshou. He worked hard day and night, regarding others and himself as one. One day, he saw everyone discussing each other, wanting to seek Bodhi, taking the clarification of the mind as the foundation. He reflected with shame, everyone has aspirations, able to understand the profound and subtle principles, why is my wisdom so slow, and I have not yet understood it. So he made up his mind, respectfully entered the Zen master's room, kowtowed before the Zen master, only hoping to receive guidance. Zen Master Tiandong...

He answered: 'Whatever goes against my heart is me.' Then he spoke a verse: 'Originally without form or trace, encompassing and pervading the great chiliocosm. Everywhere without obstruction, constantly emitting white light.' The Patriarch asked: 'How is it without obstruction?' (Zheng Tang) loudly recited the Buddha's name. The Patriarch asked: 'What does the great chiliocosm use to encompass?' (Zheng Tang) remained silent for a long time. The Patriarch approved of Ruran, having been refined and polished, suitable to inherit the lineage of Tiandong. He further entrusted a verse: 'Planting pines and carrying rice are the ancestral family style, the orthodox mind-seal principles are all the same. Past karmic connections are fortunate to meet this intention, entrusting you to continue the ancestral tradition when the time comes.'
Zhengcheng, with the Dharma name Zhenquan, was the son of the Lin family of the Three Mountains. He was naturally kind and had planted the roots of virtue in past lives. He wished his parents to obtain blessings and goodness, and resolved to study Bodhi. Chen came from the monk Tianzi, and studied the essential mysteries of Mahayana. One day, he visited the ancestral chamber and saw the dragons and elephants at the Dharma assembly, their words surpassing the ordinary and every sentence in accordance with the sect. Linking the fragrance of the ancestral path, continuing the Buddha-seed. (Zhengcheng) felt ashamed, 'They are great officials, what am I?' Seeming unable to understand, he spent his years in vain. Therefore, he sincerely prostrated before the seat. The Patriarch saw him and asked: 'What is the reason for leaving home?' He answered: 'To escape the dust and clarify the mind.' The Patriarch asked: 'Where is your mind?' He answered: 'Seeing and hearing is the very person.' He presented a verse: 'Originally without dust or obstruction, pure and free. Prajna wisdom constantly appears, its light pervading the realms of sand.' The Patriarch asked: 'What pervades the realms of sand?' (Zhengcheng) bowed once and recited the Buddha's name once. The Patriarch asked: 'How is it free?' (Zhengcheng) folded his palms and returned to his original position. The Patriarch then approved of him, 'Take good care of yourself, you are suitable to inherit the lineage of Tianzi.' He further entrusted a verse: 'The compassionate finger of Shakyamuni Buddha at Ling Mountain is the mind-seal of the ancient Buddhas, passed down through generations to this day. 【English Translation】 English version: He was the son of the Zhang family of Longtai in Min County. He was naturally kind and possessed innate wisdom. He lost both parents early in life and aspired from a young age to be filial to his parents, feeling deeply grateful for their boundless kindness. He resolved to observe齋戒 (zhaijie, fasting and abstinence) and earnestly prayed to the sages, hoping his parents would be freed from suffering and quickly ascend to the heavens. Determined to leave the mundane world, he went to Gaoguan Temple and sincerely became a disciple of Chan Master Tianzhang, learning the precepts, studying Bodhi (enlightenment), and delving into Mahayana Buddhism. He became proficient in compassion and wisdom, his medicines were miraculously effective, he mastered the essential methods of spiritual power, and he understood the complete and perfect meaning. One day, contemplating the Buddha's flower-wielding and Bixu's direct pointing, he felt ashamed that he had not yet grasped their essence. Therefore, he devoutly went to the abbot's room, prostrated before the seat, and begged for guidance. The abbot, seeing him, asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am Zhengtai.' The abbot said, 'Zhengtai, in the spring season, all things flourish and shine because of their original nature.' He replied, 'The spiritual manifestation is the mechanism of transformation; the two truths (conventional truth and ultimate truth) merge to achieve complete enlightenment (Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi).' Then he recited a verse: 'Purity is the original spring, universally manifesting and illuminating all things. One principle completely merges and penetrates, reaching the unconditioned Buddha.' The abbot said, 'Spring has arrived.' Zhengtai, with a compassionate face and joyful expression, stepped forward to inquire. The abbot said, 'What is the unconditioned Buddha?' Zhengtai clasped his hands to his chest and returned to his original position. The abbot affirmed his understanding, saying, 'Cherish it well, until it is pure and true. In the future, you can inherit Tianzhang's mantle.' He also entrusted him with a verse: 'One flower with five petals blooms in Shaoshi, the linked fragrance will not cease until a worthy talent appears. I entrust you to cultivate the pure and true mystery; the time will come when you will continue to illuminate the ancestral platform.'
Later, Guoteng, with the Dharma name Shaoquan, was the son of the Huang family, a thousand-household soldier of Wan'an in Fuzhou. He was naturally kind and virtuous, and his heart was upright. He felt deeply grateful for his parents' profound kindness and ashamed that he could not repay them. He calmed his mind and purified his thoughts, observing齋戒 (zhaijie, fasting and abstinence) with sincerity and devotion. He took refuge in Sakyamuni Buddha (the Benevolent One), and believed in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha (the Three Jewels), relying on the compassion of the Three Jewels, hoping his parents would transcend suffering. Seeing the impermanence of the floating world, he left the mundane world to study the Way, reciting Mahayana scriptures, studying the profound principles, practicing the Six Paramitas (generosity, morality, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom), and abandoning the Four Streams (sense-desire, becoming, views, and ignorance). He hoped to comprehend the supreme teachings, but had not yet grasped their subtle essence. One day, he devoutly entered his teacher's room and prostrated before the seat. The teacher, seeing him, asked, 'Who are you?'

【English Translation】 English version The Zen master revered the Bodhisattva precepts. One day, he went to visit the ancestral chamber and saw the monks were kind, discussing the ultimate principles of Buddhism with beautiful words, and their understanding of the Dharma was genuine and thorough. Zhen Yu (name) felt ashamed that he had not yet grasped the main idea of the Dharma. One day, he entered the chamber with sincerity. The master saw him and asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am a true son of the Buddha.' The master said, 'Whose family style have you used?' He replied, 'I do not adopt any heretical or external paths.' The master said, 'The true Buddha is not questioned for now, how is it to be a son?' Zhen Yu (name) bowed his head once. The master said, 'What is the true Buddha?' Zhen Yu (name) made a gesture of inquiry, folded his hands, and returned to his seat. Then he presented a verse: 'Prajna wisdom is eternally indestructible, observing with suchness and freedom. Originally wonderful and perfectly interconnected, there is no obstruction anywhere.' The master approved of his understanding and said, 'You should maintain this enlightenment well, eliminate deep-seated confusion, until you reach a state of true purity.' Later, Zhen Yu (name) inherited the Dharma lineage of Tiandong (place name). The master also instructed a verse: 'The ancestral lamp continues to burn, endlessly from ancient times to the present. Successors should cherish it, I instruct you to pass it on from generation to generation.' Guo Yang (name), also known as Da Sheng (Dharma name), was the son of the Lin family of Houguan County (place name). He had planted deep roots of virtue in his previous life, and was naturally compassionate and kind, determined to be filial and righteous, and his determination was firm and strong. He felt the kindness of his parents was immense. He deeply felt that the world is impermanent and that life and death are major events. If he did not cultivate his mind, what would he rely on? Therefore, he purified his heart and fasted, and his faith was devout. Relying on the great compassion of the Three Jewels, he wished his parents to receive blessings and good fruits. He strived to advance in the profound Dharma, thoroughly understanding the subtle principles, visiting teachers and friends, making decisions about his body and mind, stopping delusions, and returning to the truth, relying on the principles of the Dharma. One day, he went to ask his master for guidance with special sincerity. The master saw him and asked, 'What is your name?' He replied, 'It is Guo Yang (name).' The master said, 'Guo Yang's (name) light shines on the Dharma realm, suddenly realizing perfect light and entering the realm of the saints.' He replied, 'The true heart responds to the dusty world, vast and clear, proving Bodhi.' Then he said a verse: 'The nature of the mind is originally empty and spiritual, pure and naturally perfect and bright. Clearly without any attachments or obstacles, suddenly entering the city of ultimate bliss.' The master approved of his understanding and said, 'You should maintain this enlightenment well, until you reach a state of true purity.' He also instructed a verse: 'A branch of Lingshan (place name, also refers to the place where the Buddha preached) has been passed down from afar, and only then did we know that the Utpala flower (name of a flower, symbolizing rarity and purity) can bloom in the flames. Today I entrust the Dharma lineage to you, you should respect it, and when the time is right, you should glorify the ancestors and enlighten future generations.'

Here is Guojin (果津, personal name)
Whose dharma name is Dasheng (大勝, dharma name). He is the son of the Zhuo family of Changle County. He is by nature kind and gentle, filial and amiable, with a peaceful mind. He feels that his parents' kindness is difficult to repay, and he laments that the beautiful gatherings pass in an instant, and the affairs of the world are impermanent. Love and troubles are intertwined, and gains and losses are uncertain. Therefore, he made a vow to observe precepts and fast, determined to cultivate, hoping that the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) would promote compassion, and wishing his parents to ascend to the heavens. He vowed to study Prajna (wisdom), strive for Bodhi (enlightenment), comprehend and penetrate the mysteries of truth, and study the subtle essence. One day, he and his good friends discussed with each other, thoroughly investigating the direct guidance of the Holy Ancestors (referring to the Zen patriarchs), and the extraordinarily profound principles. If one cannot understand the mind and see the nature, how can one understand the purpose of the sect? Therefore, he was sincerely prepared and respectfully entered the master's room, bowing his head and prostrating. The master saw him and asked, 'Who is it?' He replied, 'It is Guojin.' The master said, 'Guojin's thousands of tributaries nourish all things, what is it like returning to the original point?' He replied, 'The lamp of wisdom illuminates the ten directions, and returning the light shines into true brightness in an instant.' Then he said in a verse: 'Cause and condition from the beginning, manifest the great thousand worlds. The silent body is as it is, reflecting oneself is great freedom.' The master approved of his answer, saying, 'Very good, you should support it well, and deeply explore the subtle and wonderful.' He also instructed a verse: 'A branch from Ling Mountain (referring to the place where the Buddha preached) has been passed down from afar, and only then did I know that the Utpala flower (U鉢羅花, a rare flower) blooms from the flames. I now entrust the Dharma to you, you must respect and cherish it, and when the time is right, you must glorify the ancestors and enlighten future generations.'
Here is Zhengjing (正鏡, personal name)
Whose dharma name is Dianquan (琔泉, dharma name). He is the son of the Yu family of Jianyang County, Jianning Prefecture. He is by nature upright, benevolent, filial, and righteous. He feels that his parents' kindness is vast, and believes that the principles of the Three Venerables (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) are profound and subtle. He fasts and observes precepts sincerely, and firmly believes in the way of the saints. He is close to virtuous people and chooses beneficial friends, hoping to attain Bodhi (enlightenment). He asked Zen Master Yuetan for advice and requested to receive the teachings. One day, he went to pay homage to the ancestral master's room, bowing diligently and earnestly requesting compassionate instruction. The ancestral master asked, 'Where are you from?' He replied, 'I have the same name as the master.' The ancestral master said, 'Life experiences are different.' He replied, 'I only admire the Mahayana Buddhism in my heart.' The ancestral master said, 'Mahayana Buddhism will not be asked for the time being, what is your mind?' Zhengjing picked up a blade of grass. The ancestral master said, 'What is this that is the same as me?' Zhengjing opened his eyes wide and stared straight ahead. Then he presented a verse: 'The tranquil nature is originally ethereal, pure and naturally complete and bright. When the opportunity comes, collect the true nature and nurture it, and when it is released, it will manifest light.' The ancestral master approved of his answer, saying, 'Very good.'
