Vajra Sutra Jiu Yi
Compiled by Duan Chengshi of Linzi, Vice Minister of the Taichang Temple of the Tang Dynasty, and Ke Gu Preface
In the seventeenth year of the Zhenyuan era (801 AD), my late father went from Jingzhou (or Qizhou) to Shu, responding to the invitation of Wei Nankang (King Wei Gao of Nankang). When Wei Gao was in his later years, due to the slander and framing by rebels, my late father was appointed as the county magistrate of Lingchi County. Wei Gao soon passed away, and the rebels appointed Zhi Liuhou. My late father had always been at odds with the rebels, and upon hearing the news, he left the county overnight, arriving at the east gate of the city. The rebels quickly issued an official document prohibiting officials from leaving their counties. That night, a yin wind blew, and my late father returned two li outside the city, seeing two torches guiding the way on both sides of the road, spaced a hundred paces apart. At first, he thought it was the county officials welcoming him, and he wondered why they didn't come closer. The height and distance of the torches were consistent, and they extinguished just as he approached the county town. When he asked the county officials, they were not yet aware of the government's document. At that time, my late father had been reciting the Vajra Sutra for five or six years without interruption. He believed that sincerity would surely move, and a response was inevitable. The guiding torches were the manifestation of the sutra. Later, the rebellious actions of the rebels were gradually exposed, and the court issued an edict appointing Yuan Zi as the Jiedushi (military governor). I (Duan Chengshi) followed my uncle into the army again, serving in the Zuo Ying (Left Battalion). My uncle feared being implicated and conspired with the supervising army, using wax-sealed silk letters to communicate with Yuan Zi. The matter was quickly exposed, and all participants were killed by the rebels. The rebels believed that my late father knew of their conspiracy. At that time, my late father was reciting the sutra, and he fell asleep unknowingly after a long time, with the doors closed. Suddenly, he felt someone opening the door and entering, saying 'Do not be afraid' repeatedly. It was as if something was thrown onto the table, making a cracking sound. When he woke up in surprise, the sound was still in his ears. Looking around, the officials and servants were all asleep. He lit a candle and searched everywhere, but found nothing. The door bolt had already been opened.

【English Translation】 English version: The carved marks all disappeared. This person then flew away into the sky. Everyone asked Dizang (Ksitigarbha, a bodhisattva who vows to save all beings in hell), 'Where was that foreign king blown by the wind?' Dizang said, 'That king should fall into Avici Hell (the hell of incessant suffering). The wind just now was karma wind.' Then he led everyone to see hell. Before even reaching the gate, they saw smoke and flames rolling, and the sound was like wind and thunder. Everyone was afraid and dared not look. As they were leaving, a splash of foam from the cauldron of boiling water (a large pot for boiling people in hell) dripped onto his left thigh, and the pain penetrated his bone marrow. Dizang then ordered a minor official to send him back, forbidding him to reveal matters of the underworld. When he woke up, it was like a dream. His wife and children were weeping around him; a day had already passed. So he sold his property to copy the scriptures, and then requested to become a monk. The place where he was dripped on in the dream became a sore that never healed.
The Monk Zhideng
During the Zhenyuan (785-805) period of the Tang Dynasty, the monk Zhideng of Tianchong Temple in Jingzhou often recited the Diamond Sutra. He died of illness. His disciples felt that his hands and feet were still warm, so they did not immediately put him in a coffin, waiting for seven days. Zhideng then came back to life and said, 'At first, I saw someone in the underworld who looked like a king. Because I recited the scriptures, he clasped his hands and came down the steps. He greeted me and said, 'We will allow you to live in the world for another ten years to strive to escape from birth and death.' He also asked, 'The monks in the human world eat Job's tears and medicinal food after noon, which greatly violates the fundamental teachings of Buddhism.' Zhideng replied, 'How about the provisions for opening and closing in the Vinaya?' The king said, 'These were added by later people and are not the Buddha's intention.' Now, the monks in Jingzhou do not drink medicine after noon.
Wang Conggui's Sister
The unmarried sister of Wang Conggui, a commoner from the Lin family in Chanling, Gong'an, often recited the Diamond Sutra. During the Zhenyuan (785-805) period of the Tang Dynasty, she suddenly died of an acute illness. After being buried for three days, her family went to the grave again and heard noises from inside. So they dug up the grave and found that she was still breathing, and they carried her back. After a few days, she could speak and said, 'When I first arrived in the underworld, the officials of the underworld released me because of the merit of reciting the Diamond Sutra.' Wang Conggui was skilled in carpentry and often built temples at Linghua Temple in Gong'an. The Chan master Shuzhong often saw Wang Conggui talking about this.
Left Camp Sergeant
When Wei Nankang was garrisoning Shu, there was a sergeant in the left camp who, at the Xishan camp, learned to recite the Diamond Sutra with the soldiers in his company. This soldier was naturally stubborn and only learned the title of the sutra on the first day. That night, while gathering firewood outside the fort, he was tied up and taken away by Tubo cavalry. They traveled more than a hundred li before stopping. Before dawn, they threw him to the ground.
【English Translation】 English version: A soldier arrived carrying an ox head. Zhao immediately became fearful and begged for help. Zhao Ling ordered a judgment according to the law: one hundred strokes of the cane and fifty days of imprisonment. Zhao then said to Zhao: 'What merits do you have?' Zhao immediately recounted that he had set up vegetarian meals for several people and had painted certain Buddha images. Zhao said, 'This is your karmic connection for the next life.' Zhao also said, 'I once recited the Diamond Sutra at my cousin's house.' Zhao said, 'You may join your palms and pray.' Zhao did as he was told. After a while, he saw a yellow brocade-wrapped scripture descending from the sky and stopping in front of Zhao. Zhao took it and saw that it was the very copy he had borrowed from his cousin, with the burnt spots still there. He was then told to join his palms again, and the scripture disappeared. Zhao said, 'This is enough to exempt you.' He then released him and sent him to a department called 'Life and Fortune' to check the length of his lifespan. The official reported, 'Zhao's original name was Zhao (釗: metal radical plus knife), changed to Zhao in a certain year, and he can live for another eighteen years.' Zhao heard this and was melancholy. Zhao laughed and said, 'Eighteen years is a great time to enjoy life, why are you not happy?' He then ordered the official to escort Zhao away. On the way, they saw a horse blocking the road. The official said, 'This is the horse that originally belonged to you, you can ride it.' Zhao rode the horse and came back to life, having been dead for a day and a half.
The Monk Wei Gong The monk Wei Gong of Faxing Temple in Jingzhou, recited the Diamond Sutra for more than thirty years, fifty times a day. He did not adhere to monastic rules, liked to drink alcohol, and often caused trouble, which was disliked by the monks. Later, he fell ill and was about to die. In the same temple was a monk named Ling Kui, whose behavior was similar to Wei Gong's, making them two great nuisances in the temple. Due to other matters, Ling Kui left the temple. About a mile away from the temple, he encountered five or six young people, all dressed in bright clothes, each holding musical instruments, like a Kucha (ancient kingdom in the Tarim Basin) band. They asked Ling Kui, 'Where is the Venerable Wei Gong?' Ling Kui told them where he was. He suspected that there was some offering in the temple. When he returned to the temple in the evening, he heard the sound of bells. Wei Gong had already died. He then recounted what he had seen earlier. That day, everyone in the temple heard the sound of silk and bamboo instruments, but no musicians entered the temple. A famous monk at the time said, 'Wei Gong probably relied on the power of the Diamond Sutra to be reborn in the Land of Immovable (不動國: a Buddhist land). It was also to encourage Ling Kui with his example.' Ling Kui was awakened, changed his behavior, and practiced diligently.
Dong Jin Chao Dong Jin Chao joined the army during the Yuanhe (806-820) period. When he first joined the army, he was on night duty on the tower east of the city. One night, the moon was bright, and he suddenly saw four people wearing yellow clothes.

【English Translation】 English version: People came from the east and gathered under the city, stating their names and appearing as if they were pursuing someone. They said to each other, 'Dong Jinchao constantly recites the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Sutra), using a portion of his merit to bless and protect the underworld. We have long benefited from his kindness, how can we kill him? We must find someone who died unjustly to take his place. If this person goes elsewhere, we will have no one to rely on.' One of them said, 'There is a person across the street from Dong Jinchao, with the same surname and year of birth, and whose lifespan is similar, he can take his place.' After saying this, he suddenly disappeared. Dong Jinchao was surprised by this. When it dawned, he heard mourning sounds from across the street and asked the reason. The deceased's parents said, 'My son suddenly passed away last night.' Dong Jinchao was moved to tears and explained the reason for the events, so he arranged the funeral for the deceased and supported his parents. Later, he became a monk with the Dharma name Huitong, residing in Tang'an Temple in Xingyuan (Initially, Lu Qizhi had doubts about this matter, but later someone who knew the details said that since the lifespans were similar, it was not an unjust death, and his doubts were dispelled).
Wang Mian
During the Yuanhe period (806-820 AD), when Yan Sikong Shou was in Jiangling, Wang Mian, the garrison commander of Cenyang, often recited the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Sutra). Once, he was sent to Guizhou to handle affairs, and on his return journey, his boat was wrecked at Zhata Tan, and five people fell into the water together. When Wang Mian first entered the water, he felt as if someone handed him a bamboo pole. He grabbed the pole and floated with the waves, eventually reaching Xia Lao Town, where he reached the shore unharmed. He examined the object in his hand and found that it was the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Sutra) that he had been reciting. Zhata Tan to Xia Lao is more than three hundred li.
Monk Huizong
In the early Changqing period (821 AD), the monk Huizong of Gong'an in Jingzhou, whose surname was Cai, often suffered from gu poisoning and became very weak. So he vowed to recite the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Sutra), waiting for the end of his life. When he had recited it fifty times, he dreamed during the day that someone told him to open his mouth, and pulled out more than a dozen strands of hair from his throat. At night, he dreamed of spitting out a large earthworm, one zhou long. From then on, his illness was cured. The monk Xingjian of Jing Mountain witnessed this event.
Monk Fazheng
The monk Fazheng of the Prajna Courtyard of Kaiyuan Temple in Jiangling, recited the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Sutra) three times seven (twenty-one) times a day. In the early Changqing period (821 AD), he fell ill and died. When he arrived in the underworld, he saw someone like a king, who asked him what merits he had accumulated in his life. He replied, 'I often recite the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Sutra).' So the king bowed and invited him to ascend the hall and sit on an embroidered seat, reciting the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Sutra) seven times. The guards all put their palms together. Those who were being tortured and interrogated below the steps stopped their torture and arguments, and listened quietly to his recitation.

The king descended the steps to see him off, saying, 'May you, venerable one, live another thirty years in this world, and do not neglect your chanting.' Thereupon, (Bi) followed the official for several dozen li, to the edge of a large pit. The official, taking advantage of (Bi)'s proximity to the pit, pushed him from behind, as if he had fallen into empty space. Seven days had passed since his death, and only his face remained uncooled. Fa Zheng is still alive today, over eighty years old. The Jingzhou monk Chang Jing personally witnessed this event.
Shami Daoyin (name of a novice monk)
In Shishou County, there was a novice monk named Daoyin, who constantly recited the Vajra-chedika-sūtra (Diamond Sutra). In the early years of Baoli (825 AD) (Guangji says it was during the Changqing era), he was out on business and returned home at night. On the way, he suddenly encountered a tiger, which roared and pounced forward. The novice monk, knowing that he could not escape, closed his eyes and sat down, silently reciting the sutra, hoping for (Buddha's) protection. The tiger then lay in the grass, guarding him until dawn when villagers came and went, and the tiger left. Looking at the place where it had crouched, saliva was flowing on the ground.
Wang Zhonggan (name of a person)
In the third year of Yuanhe (808 AD), the rebel Li Tongjie raised troops in Cangzhou, and Emperor Jing (posthumous title of the emperor) ordered Liu You to lead the Qide army to suppress him. They began by besieging the city of Dezhou, but the city walls were strong and could not be breached. The next day, they attacked the city again, from Mao time to Wei time, with eight or nine out of ten soldiers wounded or killed, but they still could not capture it. At that time, there was a brave soldier named Wang Zhonggan, from Boye, one of the eight generals of the Qizhou government, who constantly recited the Vajra-chedika-sūtra (Diamond Sutra) for more than twenty years, without missing a day. On that day, Wang Zhonggan climbed a scaling ladder, and as he was about to reach the battlements, he was struck by arrows like a hedgehog, and knocked down by a lei wood (a type of wooden weapon). He was dragged out by fellow soldiers and placed outside the sheep and horse city, by the moat. Liu You, seeing that it was late, ordered a retreat. At that time, arrows were falling like rain under the city, and the fellow soldiers were in a hurry and forgot to take Wang Zhonggan's body. After Wang Zhonggan died, he dreamed that he was in a wilderness, and encountered a large river that he wanted to cross but could not. He looked up to the sky and cried loudly. Suddenly, he heard a voice, and Wang Zhonggan saw a person more than ten feet tall, whom he suspected was a deity, so he asked for directions. The person said, 'Do not be afraid of me, I will let you cross this river.' Wang Zhonggan thanked him, but before he could raise his head, the deity grabbed his waist and threw him into the air, and after a long time, he landed on the ground. Suddenly, he woke up as if from a dream, and heard the sound of the second watch from the rebel city. At first, he did not remember crossing the river, nor did he know where his wounds were. He raised his hand to touch his face, and his eyebrows and eyelashes were covered in blood, and he realized that he was injured, so he raised

Wang Han
In the fifth year of the Taihe reign (831 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, Wang Han, a commoner from Shifang County, Hanzhou, often made small profits in the market. He suddenly died of illness. After three days, he came back to life and said, 'There were sixteen people in the underworld who were arrested together, and fifteen of them were assigned to other places. Only I, Wang Han, was taken to an office, where I saw a young man in a green shirt who claimed to be my nephew and worked as a clerk in the underworld.' So he introduced me to the Tuidian (an official title), who said, 'He looks like my elder brother,' but Wang Han didn't think so. His elder brother said, 'There is a wronged ox suing you because you burned it to death when you were burning wasteland.' He also said, 'You once sold bamboo to a dog butcher to make a Konghou (a type of stringed instrument), and he killed two dogs, and the dogs are also suing you. Your name is not yet on the death register, so you can still be spared. What merits do you plan to do?' Wang Han wanted to hold a vegetarian feast and transcribe the Lotus Sutra and the Golden Light Sutra, but his brother said no. So Wang Han asked, 'I will recite the Diamond Sutra seven times a day for them.' His brother happily said, 'That's enough.' After he came back to life, Wang Han abandoned his family business and became a monk, and is now in Shifang County.
Gao She
In the winter of the seventh year of the Taihe reign (833 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, Li Gongshi, a Geshishizhong (official title), served as the Xingjun Sima (military administrator) of Taiyuan. Gao She, a Kongmu Guan (clerk), stayed in the envoy's courtyard. When the drums sounded at dusk, he went to visit the neighboring room. Suddenly, he met a man who was more than six feet tall, who shouted, 'The Xingjun (military administrator) is calling for you.' Gao She followed him. Because he walked slowly, the man pushed him from behind. Unknowingly, he walked about dozens of miles north, into a valley in the wilderness, and then climbed a mountain. When he reached the top of the mountain, he looked around and saw that the cities and houses were all below him. A person from a Cao Si (office) chased after him, shouting, 'Chase Gao She.' When he arrived inside the Cao Si, many people were wearing red and green clothes. The person in charge of the case, who looked like Cui Hangxin, a Langzhong (official title), judged, 'Hand him over to the Si for confrontation.' He was then taken to a place where hundreds of people were sitting in the open air, mixed with pigs and sheep. He was taken to a person who was Du Ze, Gao She's brother-in-law. Du Ze confronted Gao She and said, 'Do you remember when you received the letter and held a wedding banquet, you sent me to buy four sheep? Now I am being chased by them for debts and have suffered all kinds of hardships.'

Large iron rings were nailed on the beams. There were hundreds of people, all holding knives and ropes, tying people's heads and pulling them into the iron rings to cut them open and remove the meat. She ran out in fear, only reciting the Vajra Sutra (Jin Gang Jing). He has been reborn in various places for thirty years, but now he is suing about the past. Do you remember? She declined, saying that he was too young to remember. The Beacon Soldier of Fengzhou
In the early years of Yongtai (742-743), a beacon soldier from Fengzhou was captured by the Dangxiang people of Tubo in the evening and taken to Xifan to exchange for horses. The Tubo general ordered people to drill holes in his shoulder blades, pass leather ropes through them, and then equip him with hundreds of horses. After half a year, the horses had doubled in number, and the Tubo general rewarded him with hundreds of sheepskins. Later, he was transferred to a place near the Yaya tent. The son of the Zanpu liked his efficiency, so he had him hold the flag and serve on the left and right, and gave him the remaining meat and cheese to eat. After another half a year, he was sad and wept while eating cheese and meat, and refused to eat. The Zanpu asked him why, and he said, 'I have an old mother who often dreams of Zanpu Poren at night.' The Zanpu was lost in thought when he heard this, and summoned the people in the tent at night and said, 'The laws of Tubo are very strict and he cannot be released. I will make an exception and give him two strong horses and let him go on a certain road, and I will not pursue it.' After the beacon soldier got the horses, he ran desperately, and both horses died of exhaustion. So he hid during the day and traveled at night. A few days later, he was stabbed in the foot and fell in the desert. Suddenly, something was blown by the wind and rustled past him. He grabbed it and wrapped it around his foot. After a while, it didn't hurt anymore. He tried to stand up and walk as before. After two nights, he reached the border of Fengzhou. When he returned home, his mother was still alive, and she said with mixed feelings of grief and joy, 'Since I lost you, I have only recited the Vajra Sutra (Jin Gang Jing), without stopping while sleeping or eating, praying to see you. Now my vow has indeed been fulfilled.'

Wang Xiaolian
During the Dali period (766-779 AD), a horse thief in Taiyuan falsely accused a man named Wang Xiaolian of being an accomplice, torturing him for over ten days. Wang Xiaolian, in extreme pain, was forced to confess. The official in charge of the case suspected a miscarriage of justice and didn't immediately finalize the verdict. Wang Xiaolian could only recite the Diamond Sutra (Jin Gang Jing), his voice sorrowful, day and night without ceasing. Suddenly, one day, a bamboo section, two segments long, fell into the prison and rolled to his feet. Other prisoners scrambled for the bamboo. The jailer, suspecting a hidden blade, split it open and found two lines of writing inside, which read, 'Even the Dharma should be relinquished, how much more so the non-Dharma.' The calligraphy was very skillful. The thief leader felt sorrow and remorse, confessing that he had falsely accused him due to an old grudge.
