The Miraculous Responses to the Diamond Prajna Paramita Sutra Dharma Master Yan During the Tianjian period of the Liang Dynasty (502-519 AD), there was a Dharma Master Yan who resided in Zhaoti Temple in Chang'an. At the age of eleven, he became a monk. One day, he went with the monks in the temple to seek divination. At the fortune teller's house, they divined in order. When it came to Yan, the fortune teller said, 'It's a pity for his intelligence, but his life is short. He will only live to eighteen.' Yan was unhappy to hear this. After returning to the temple, he vowed to personally go to the scripture hall, burn incense and prostrate himself before the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), vowing to cultivate and begging for a scripture to uphold for life. After praying, he randomly drew a scripture from the scripture box, which was the 'Diamond Prajna Sutra'. So he devoted himself to upholding it, day and night. One day at night, when it was late, he saw five-colored light in the room. After a while, he saw a Brahmin monk (Indian monk), about fifteen feet tall, who said to Yan, 'Your life is limited to eighteen years, and you will surely die young. Now, because of the power of upholding the Mahayana scripture, you can extend your life.' After saying that, he disappeared. Because of this verification, he became more diligent. After the age of nineteen, one day he visited the fortune teller, who said in surprise, 'I once said that your life would surely be short, but I didn't expect to meet you again today. What good deeds have you practiced that your premature death has been eliminated and your life has been extended?' Yan said, 'I have been devoted to upholding the 'Diamond Prajna Sutra'.' The fortune teller kowtowed and said, 'We are in the world of dust and do not know...'

【English Translation】 English version: The merit of the Buddha's Dharma is so unique and extraordinary. Observing this master's departure, his lifespan will reach ninety-two years. Later, it indeed corresponded to the words of the physiognomist, and he finally passed away at Zhaoti Temple. (From 'Records of Miraculous Responses').

Xun Shi

During the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD), in Xiwang Li Village, Xinfan County, Yizhou, there lived a laywoman named Xun Shi, who kept a low profile and was unknown to people. She once stood in an open space east of the village, gazing at the sky, and wrote the 'Vajra Prajna Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Sutra) by hand. Consequently, she moved the gods and dragons to cover and protect her. Whenever it rained, this area would not get wet, about a zhang in size, like a roof covering it. Whenever it rained, shepherds and children would take shelter here. During the Wude era of the Tang Dynasty (618-626 AD), a monk told the villagers that someone had been writing scriptures here, which caused the gods to set up a precious canopy to cover and protect it. It must not be trampled upon. Afterwards, set up railings around it and make offerings to Buddha statues. On fasting days, gather good friends from near and far to recite scriptures and cultivate goodness. Heavenly music was often heard, and the sound shook the area, so this place became an auspicious place.

Fazang

The Shramana Fazang was a person of the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD). He lived in Baoshi Temple in Fuzhou. He was simple and honest by nature, and diligent in his practice. During the Kaihuang era (581-600 AD), he built temples in Luozhou County of this state. He once sold his own robes and alms bowl to build two halls. He also transcribed more than eight hundred volumes of scriptures. In the second month of the second year of Wude in the Tang Dynasty (619 AD), he suddenly contracted an illness. In a coma, he suddenly saw a Vajra deity (Vajra deity), holding a volume of scriptures in his hand, who said to Fazang, 'You have the sin of misappropriation in building temples and transcribing scriptures. I will now give you a volume of the 'Vajra Prajna Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Sutra). If you can sincerely transcribe this sutra and circulate and recite it, the sin of misappropriation will be completely eliminated.' After saying that, he disappeared. Soon after, the illness was cured. Afterwards, he sold all his belongings and transcribed this sutra one hundred times. He upheld it throughout his life, cultivated all kinds of good deeds, and did not involve himself in worldly affairs. He lived to the age of ninety-nine. On the fifteenth day of the first month of that year, he invited the public to watch and recite the 'Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra' (Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra) in seven volumes, and the 'Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra) in seven volumes. He ascended the seat and sat upright, asking for pen and ink to write a verse, bidding farewell to the public.

【English Translation】 English version Seng Hu, only five years old, asked his mother why she was crying so sadly. His mother told him the reason. Seng Hu immediately replied to his mother, 'Why don't you sell me to save father?' So, sobbing, she took her son to the market and sold him to a merchant from Shu, obtaining two strings of cash. Separated from her son, her heart was filled with pain. Thereupon, she asked a monk to transcribe seven rolls of the Diamond Sutra, and prayed earnestly before the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). First, she wished that her husband, Li Lichang, could resolve his grievances through the merit of transcribing the sutra. Second, she wished that mother and son could meet again. Since their separation, she had gone blind from missing her son, but she recited the Diamond Sutra every day, begging in the market. Her son followed the merchant to Shu, and thirty years passed. Both his adoptive parents had died. Suddenly, he missed his birth mother, who had sold him to transcribe the sutra for his father. He still did not know if she was alive or dead. So, he gathered his family wealth and returned to Jiangling to look for his mother. Unable to find her immediately, he bought a house to live in temporarily. Suddenly, he encountered the Laba Festival, a festival for ancestral sacrifices, and begged from several old women attending the vegetarian feast. The old women recited a roll of the Diamond Sutra when they came, intending to dedicate the merit. Seng Hu said, 'I lost my father when I was young, and my mother sold me to dedicate merit to my father. Now I have returned to my hometown, but I cannot find my mother. I wish that both my parents could be reborn in a better realm.' One of the old women then called out, 'Young man, I am your mother. When you were five years old, I sold you to transcribe the sutra for your father. The sales contract is in a basket in my house.' Seng Hu asked for the contract and read it, filled with mixed emotions of sorrow and joy. He burned incense and prayed to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), Heaven and Earth, and the deities, that he could now meet his mother. Because his mother was blind and could not see her son, he rinsed his mouth with water and, facing Heaven and Earth, licked his mother's eyes, and both eyes regained their sight. Thus, mother and son were reunited, fulfilling the prayers of that year. All who witnessed this were filled with admiration.

Ren Wu Niang

In the first year of Longshuo (661 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, in the room of a Bhikkhuni at Jingde Temple in Luochuan, there was a maid named Ren Wu Niang. After her death, people set up a spirit seat to make offerings to her. After more than a month, her younger siblings heard lewd sounds coming from the spirit seat every night. At first, they were very afraid, so they burned incense and asked. The spirit replied, 'In my lifetime, I should not have committed five serious offenses. First, I should not have engaged in improper behavior in the room. Second, I liked to eat beef. Third, I wasted grains. Fourth, I poured out soup.'

【English Translation】 English version: 5. Killing numerous living beings. Also, making raw fish dishes from live fish. All the beings killed are in the underworld, demanding that I repay them one by one. Now, King Yama has ordered me to suffer in the hell of the knife-tree and sword-forest, ten thousand deaths and ten thousand births in a single day and night, the pain unbearable. Currently, there are seven knives in my body, the pain piercing my bones. I asked the ghost officers of the underworld what cause or condition could release me from this suffering. The ghost officer replied, 'The evil karma you created in your previous life is profound, so you must suffer in this hell. If you want to escape, you must have filial descendants in the living world write seven complete volumes of the Diamond Sutra for you, then you can be freed from this suffering.' I replied, 'I have no descendants, only my younger siblings at home.' I requested a temporary cessation of suffering, willing to be released to seek help. I was granted permission to return. I hope my siblings, out of familial affection, will sell the clothing and possessions I left behind, donate the money to the Pure Land Temple, and ask Master Baoxian to write seven volumes of the Diamond Sutra for me. Personally, before the Buddha, I will repent for the boundless and grave sins of killing, wishing for an early escape from the bitter suffering of hell.' Thereupon, my siblings followed my instructions, immediately selling my belongings and commissioning a monk to write the Diamond Sutra. Only after one volume was completed, the prison officers of the underworld, acting on the orders of the king, came and immediately removed one knife from Ren Wuniang's body. After the seven volumes of the sutra were completed, all the knives were removed. Receiving the merit of this Mahayana scripture, all the beings who came to seek retribution were liberated and reborn in good realms. Ren Wuniang's karmic obstacles also melted away like ice, and she escaped from hell, attaining human and heavenly blessings. One day, she returned to thank her siblings, but just as she was about to inquire in detail, she disappeared. (From Records of Retribution).

Bai Renzhe

During the Longshuo era of the Tang Dynasty (661-663 AD), Bai Renzhe served as the county lieutenant of Zhuyang County in Guo Prefecture. He was ordered to transport rice to Liaodong. While crossing the sea, he suddenly encountered a severe storm, and darkness enveloped all around. Bai Renzhe and the eighty-two people on board were all worried and fearful. Bai Renzhe usually recited the Vajra Prajna Sutra (Diamond Sutra), and his sincerity was deeply felt. At that time, he composed himself, burned incense, and recited the Diamond Sutra. Before he finished the first chapter, he suddenly had a dream-like vision, seeing a Brahman monk (referring to an Indian monk) in the sky, emitting light from his body.

【English Translation】 English version: Five-colored light. Someone told Renzhe (仁哲, a person's name): 'You eighty-odd people have evil karma from past lives. Today, you will all sink into the sea.' At that time, the ghosts, spirits, and Rakshasas (羅剎, a type of demon) in the sea were all waiting for the opportunity. Only because of Renzhe's merit of reciting scriptures on weekdays, the Jade Emperor (玉帝, the supreme deity of Taoism) has now come and informed the Dragon King (龍王, the king of the sea) and the water palace deities, perhaps to avoid this unexpected disaster. I have come specifically to inform you, do not worry or doubt. In a moment, the wind will calm and the waves will subside, and you eighty-odd people will all be able to reach the shore safely.' (From 'Records of Retribution').

Sima Qiaoqing (司馬喬卿, a person's name)

In the first year of Yonghui (永徽, 650 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, Sima Qiaoqing served as Dali Si (大理司, a judicial official). He was in mourning for his mother's death, and he was so grief-stricken that he became extremely weak. He pricked his blood to write a volume of the Diamond Sutra (金剛經, Vajracchedikā Sūtra). As soon as it was completed, three stalks of Ganoderma (芝草, a type of medicinal mushroom) suddenly grew on the tomb, one foot and eight inches long, with green stems and red caps. They were picked, but they grew again. (From 'Miraculous Responses of the Diamond Sutra').

Wu Kui (吳逵, a person's name)

During the Tianbao (天寶, 742-756 AD) years of the Tang Dynasty, Wu Kui, a resident of Yixing County (宜興縣, a county in Changzhou) in Changzhou (常州, a city in Jiangsu province), would personally go to the Buddha's presence every day at the fifth watch (五更, around 3-5 am) to recite seventeen volumes of the Diamond Prajna Sutra (金剛般若經, Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra), and also prostrate and recite the Buddha's name. Wu Kui had a poem that said: 'When the fifth watch bell rings, do not be greedy for sleep, rouse your spirit and face the Buddha. One bow, one recitation of Amitabha Buddha (彌陀佛, Amitābha), a lotus has already been planted in the flower pond.' He practiced daily and lived to the age of ninety-two. Suddenly, he bid farewell to his children and died without illness. He personally saw two messengers leading him to see Yama (閻摩天子, Yama, the king of hell). Yama asked Wu Kui: 'What good deeds did you do in your life?' Wu Kui replied: 'From childhood to this day, I have focused on reciting the Diamond Sutra.' The king folded his palms and ordered Wu Kui to sit down and recite a volume aloud. When he recited 'in Śrāvastī (舍衛國, an ancient city in India),' a wonderful fragrance immediately emanated from his mouth, and he saw the Buddha appear. Yama was overjoyed and said to Wu Kui: 'You have the merit of Prajna (般若, wisdom), I will send you to be reborn in Śrāvastī, to inherit the position of a high official, enjoy his rank and salary, enjoy wealth and blessings, and your descendants will be glorious and prominent.' The messengers obeyed the order and sent Wu Kui. Wu Kui looked back at his old home and told his children in the air: 'I have obtained the power of reciting the scriptures. Yama has ordered me to be reborn in Śrāvastī. I have come specifically to say goodbye to you. You should uphold the Diamond Sutra and the Lotus Sutra (法華經, Lotus Sūtra). The underworld deeply respects these two sutras. If you cannot uphold them,'

【English Translation】 English version: Using various flowers and incense to respectfully make offerings brings immeasurable blessings. However, one still must not kill living beings. All creatures that crawl and possess sentience have Buddha-nature. Buying lives destined for slaughter and releasing them brings the reward of longevity. His children, hearing this, wept sadly. He said, 'Do not grieve. In this world, if one has a single good deed to rely on, the end of life is like sleeping at night and seeing the sun rise in the morning, still able to see the sun and moon. If one consistently does evil, one will surely fall into darkness. Strive to do good.' After speaking, he disappeared. (From 'Miscellaneous Records').

The Horse Thief

During the Dali era (766-779 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, a horse thief in Taiyuan falsely accused a Xiulian (a civil service examination candidate) of being an accomplice. The Xiulian was interrogated and tortured for over ten days, enduring immense suffering, but never confessed. The investigating official suspected he was wrongly accused and did not finalize the case. The Xiulian devotedly recited the 'Diamond Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra), his voice filled with sorrow, day and night without ceasing. Suddenly, one day, a section of bamboo with knots at both ends fell to the ground, its origin unknown. The prisoners all scrambled to see it, and it was passed to the jailer, who suspected it contained a hidden knife. He split the bamboo open in front of everyone and found half a verse from the 'Diamond Sutra': 'Even the Dharma should be relinquished, how much more so what is not Dharma.' Everyone was astonished and filled with reverence. The horse thief confessed his guilt, and the Xiulian was released.

Zhou Boyu

In the eleventh year of the Dali era (776 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, Zhou Boyu, the Biejia (Assistant Administrator) of Weizhou, daily recited the 'Diamond Prajna Paramita Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra), not letting public or private affairs change his devotion, regarding it as a daily practice. One day, he suddenly saw a Brahmin monk appear before him. Zhou Boyu asked, 'Who are you, venerable one?' The monk replied, 'I am Subhuti (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha, known for his understanding of emptiness) from the Prajna assembly. Because you have recited the sutra for many years, it is a pity that you have not ceased eating meat. If you sincerely seek the Buddha's path, you must abstain from meat and be a vegetarian.' From then on, Zhou Boyu abstained from meat, ate vegetarian food, and became even more diligent, reciting the 'Prajna Sutra' (Prajna Paramita Sutra) without ceasing, regardless of the weather. (From 'Evidential Eulogy').

Wang Daizhi

In the preface to the 'Verified Experiences of Zen Master Liao' it says: Formerly, during the Tang Dynasty, there was a Wang Daizhi, whose boat reached the Han River and encountered adverse winds. The waves were surging, and darkness surrounded them. The masts were broken, and the oars were destroyed, making the situation extremely dangerous. The entire boat was filled with panic, and their lives were in peril. Wang Daizhi was also afraid and, having no other choice, began to recite the sutras he usually chanted.

【English Translation】 English version A volume of the Diamond Sutra was thrown into the river, and immediately the wind and waves calmed down. Attendant-in-waiting Wei Ri (person's name) deeply missed this sutra. Because he had upheld it for many years, he was depressed. After about two months, he arrived at Zhenjiang. He saw something like a ball about a hundred steps away from the stern of the boat, appearing and disappearing from time to time. Everyone thought it was strange. The attendant-in-waiting sent someone to call a fisherman to retrieve it. It turned out to be a snail, rolled into a ball. When it was cut open, the outside was wet and the inside was dry. The attendant-in-waiting separated it with his hands and saw the sutra that had been thrown away, undamaged. The attendant-in-waiting was overjoyed and bowed to receive it, and sighed, 'The Han River converges into the Jiujiang River and reaches Nanxu (ancient name for Zhenjiang), flowing for thousands of miles. Boats come and go, countless in number. However, I have never heard of a sutra being carried from there to here, and a snail refusing to abandon it upon seeing it. Is it for fame? Is it for profit? Is it for wealth? Is it for lust? It must be someone seeking to escape the cycle of reincarnation and death.' Alas! Among all things, only humans are the most intelligent. Some people have never heard of this sutra in their entire lives, some have heard of it but have not seen it, some have seen it but do not believe it, and some believe it but are enslaved by fame, profit, wealth, and lust, using their minds and unable to uphold it. They are not even as good as a snail. If humans are said to be the most intelligent, who can compare to it? At that time, it was the seventh year of the Shao Xi era of the Song Dynasty (1196), the year of Ding Hai, the fifteenth day of the mid-autumn month, narrated by Xie Sou Xiao Zi (person's name).

Qian Si (person's name)

During the Qian Yuan era of the Tang Dynasty (758-760), the monk Qian Hui (person's name) from Guangzhou had upheld the Diamond Sutra since childhood, without changing in cold or heat. Because he was traveling by sea to the Nan'an Protectorate with dozens of monks and laypeople, they suddenly encountered a great storm that destroyed the ship. Everyone on board sank into the sea. Only Qian Hui happened to encounter a clump of artemisia in the waves, and he gradually reached the top of the artemisia. He drifted with the waves for three days and three nights before reaching the shore. Upon closer inspection of the artemisia, he saw a volume of the Diamond Sutra, which was not wet. Qian Hui bowed and received this sutra, sincerely making offerings and upholding it day and night. He lived to be one hundred and thirty years old and passed away peacefully while sitting upright. The sutra naturally emitted fragrance, and the smoke gradually turned into five-colored clouds, slowly rising to the heavens. The virtuous monks and the prefectural officials, as well as monks and laypeople from near and far, all gathered here.

Princess Dou

Princess Dou of the Chen state during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) was the sister of Rui Gongkuan of the Lu family. She was benevolent and believed in karmic retribution. She often recited the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra). When she was about to finish a scroll, with only two or three lines left, she suddenly had a severe headache. Thinking that she might die before finishing the scroll, she forced herself to ask for a candle to complete it. However, all the candles went out, and the maid returned empty-handed. The princess sighed deeply. Suddenly, she saw a lamp gradually rising into the hall, directly entering the bedroom, about three feet above the ground, with no one holding it. The light was as bright as day. The princess was surprised and delighted, and quickly took the scripture to read. After a while, the family managed to make fire by drilling wood, and the candlelight immediately went out. From then on, her illness was cured, and she recited five scrolls every day. One day, Rui Gong was about to die, and the princess went to visit him. Rui Gong said to the princess, 'My sister recites the scripture with sincerity and reverence. The underworld has recorded your name and added to your lifespan. You will surely have good karmic rewards in the future.' The princess lived to be ninety years old, and without any illness, she took a bath, sat upright, and passed away.

The Monk of Three Cuts

During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), Cui Zhao was the prefect of Shouzhou. There was a strong soldier who committed a capital crime. When he was about to be executed, officials escorted him to the execution ground. After three cuts, the knives broke. The prefect asked the soldier, 'What kind of magic do you have?' He replied, 'I have no magic. I usually concentrate on reciting the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra).' So, he sent someone to fetch the scripture to look at. When the scripture box was opened, it was found that the scripture had been broken into three pieces, with clear marks. The prefect saw this, put his palms together in joy, and praised, 'I have heard that this scripture has inconceivable merits, and now it is indeed so.' So, he pardoned his crime. The soldier requested to become a monk, and the prefect issued a certificate of ordination, and he was named the Monk of Three Cuts.

Kai Xingli

Kai Xingli of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) was from Shanzhou. He did not know a single character. In the early years of Changqing (821 AD), he often followed good friends who orally taught him the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra). After a year, he could recite it himself. At that time, or because of (missing a character) being an ordinary person everywhere, he would offer the scripture, burn incense, and recite it, reciting one scroll a day.

【English Translation】 English version Shi Mingjun In the first year of Yonghui (650) during the Tang Dynasty, Shi Mingjun died suddenly. Su Yun saw two servants in green robes leading him to the King of the Underworld. The King asked, 'What deeds did you perform in your life?' Mingjun replied, 'I only recited the Diamond Sutra.' The King said, 'Excellent. If you recite it a hundred thousand times, you will surely be reborn in the Pure Land next year and see your teacher.' Then he released him to return to the world. From then on, Mingjun became even more diligent, and he passed away in the third month of the second year of Yonghui (651). The monks in the temple all smelled a strange fragrance. (From his biography) Su Renqin During the Wude era (618-626) of the Tang Dynasty, Su Renqin of Chang'an had a father who had borrowed money for rebirth from the underworld in a previous life, allowing him to be reborn and enjoy wealth and fortune in this world, but he had never repaid it. After his death, he fell into a latrine, carrying sand and stones, his body covered in filth, suffering immeasurable pain. Moreover, Su Renqin, while alive, relied on his wealth and did not know shame, slaughtering pigs and sheep at will, and cooking various living beings. This was because the beings he had killed each filed complaints in the underworld, and the spirits of the unseen world recorded his sins, leading to his being pursued and recorded by the underworld. Su Renqin's soul was imprisoned, causing him to suffer various serious illnesses in the human world, confined to bed for years without recovery. Because of the evil karma of killing, his lifespan was reduced, and he died prematurely. He saw two messengers escorting him to Yama (King of the Underworld). Yama said, 'Because you cultivated goodness in a previous life, you were born wealthy in this life. Now you indulge in pleasure, not recognizing cause and effect, and kill living beings, therefore your lifespan is reduced, and your fortune is cut off.' He ordered the jailers to drive him to the mountain of knives and the trees of swords to repay his evil deeds. Then Su Renqin panicked and fearfully told Yama, 'Considering that I, Su Renqin, although I never read scriptures or did good deeds in my life, once spent money to have a copy of the Diamond Sutra made and gave it to the monk Shenjing of Anguo Temple to uphold. This monk has already passed away, is there no retribution?' In a moment, there was a strange and fragrant scent, and the monk Shenjing was seen holding the Diamond Sutra, coming directly before the King's hall, saying, 'This poor monk has long upheld this sutra with Su Renqin, and therefore has the merit of Prajna (wisdom). Therefore, I have come to inform the King, hoping that you will grant compassion and release Su Renqin's soul again to return to the world and reform his ways.' Yama immediately joined his palms and decreed that Su Renqin's lifespan be increased by fifty years.

【English Translation】 English version: (Renqin) returned to the Yang world and was thus revived. Those near and far who saw and heard of this were all amazed and each refrained from killing and turned to good. After (Renqin) came back to life, he vowed to print and distribute one hundred copies of the 'Lotus Sutra' (Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra), one thousand copies of the 'Diamond Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Sutra), offer a vegetarian feast to one hundred monks, hold a grand water and land ceremony, and perform various meritorious deeds. Suddenly, he dreamed of his deceased father, who said, 'I suffer immeasurable torment in hell, but thanks to the power of your merit from practicing the Buddha's Dharma, I have been reborn in the heavens. If you donate one hundred acres of land to the temple to offer to the Buddha and provide vegetarian meals to the monks, this merit will be inconceivable, surpassing the merit of seven generations of ancestors and benefiting your descendants.' (Renqin) then followed his deceased father's instructions and fulfilled his wish. (From 'Miscellaneous Records').

Yang Xun

During the Dali period of the Tang Dynasty (766-779 AD), Yang Xun, a clerk in Kuizhou, often recited the 'Diamond Prajna' (Vajra Prajna). He was upright in his heart, accumulated hidden virtues, and moved the heavens. He had a son who was twenty-three years old and studying for the imperial examinations. One day, he told his father that he wanted to enter the examination hall. His father said, 'Your studies are not yet complete, you cannot go.' That night, his father dreamed of a Vajra deity, who said to Yang Xun, 'Your recitation of scriptures and accumulation of hidden virtues have been felt, so I have come to inform you. Your son will surely be noble in the future. If he takes the imperial examinations, he must change his name to Yang Chun to take the exam, and I will help your son in the examination hall.' After Yang Xun had the dream, the next day he had his son submit his paper under the name Yang Chun, and he indeed got sixth place. The following year, he went to the provincial examination. Yang Chun himself dreamed of a Vajra deity, who told Yang Chun, 'This year's provincial examination topic is about ruling with the way of the king, you can pay attention in advance and do not leak it.' On the day of the official examination, it was indeed as he had dreamed. He passed the exam in ninety-sixth place. After the palace examination was completed, the examiners presented three papers to the Emperor's desk and chose a day to open the seals and announce the names. Yang Chun dreamed again and again that the deity said, 'Your policy essay is very good, but it does not suit the examiner's intention, and you have been placed in the fifth class. I will now replace your paper with the first-place paper on the Emperor's desk, and when the names are announced the day after tomorrow, you should win the first place in the world.' This is the reward for your father and son's usual recitation of scriptures and good deeds. At this point, the dream was indeed fulfilled. Shi Yan heard that the son of the clerk Yang Xun, passed the imperial

【English Translation】 English version Xia Du Kui (person's name). Please, Xun (person's name), be seated. Ordered Xun to be dismissed from his post. Xun told the History Official (official title): 'I have relied on the protection of Heaven on weekdays, serving the public for forty years. My family has no assets, only accumulated good deeds in secret, leaving behind three money bags. Please order them to be brought and opened in the hall for inspection.' The first money bag contained thirty-nine cash coins worth three qian (ancient currency unit). The second money bag contained more than four thousand cash coins worth two qian. The third money bag contained an estimated ten thousand small coins. The History Official did not understand what this meant. Xun said: 'Every year, when handling official duties of reviewing cases, when encountering death row inmates, I would carefully examine their circumstances. If their death sentence could be commuted to exile, I would contribute one coin worth three qian. If someone committed a crime deserving exile, I would change it to imprisonment and contribute one coin worth two qian. If someone committed a crime deserving caning, I would assess the severity and perhaps release them, and contribute one small coin.' Furthermore, I emulated Zhou Chi (person's name) and practiced the ten benefits of the Tai Shang Gan Ying Pian (Treatise on Actions and Retributions): 1. Collecting abandoned babies in the streets and hiring people to care for them. When they grow older, let the neighbors identify them. If anyone recognizes them, reunite them with their parents. 2. Starting from the third day of the eleventh lunar month every winter, taking in beggars and poor people over sixty and under fifteen years old, housing them in my family's almshouse, providing them with one sheng (unit of volume) of rice and fifteen cash coins per day. On the third day of the second lunar month, after a full season, let them seek their own livelihood. 3. Universally dispensing effective medicinal soups to relieve people's illnesses and suffering. 4. Providing coffins to help families who cannot afford to transport and bury their deceased. 5. If a female servant is not suitable for service, not calculating her purchase price, but giving her clothing and money to allow her to remarry as she pleases. 6. While living in this world, I wholeheartedly abstain from killing and protect all living beings. When encountering flying or walking creatures, I buy them and release them. 7. Whenever there is a famine year, I buy grain at high prices and sell it at low prices to relieve the poor. 8. Whenever temples or monasteries are collapsing or damaged, I repair them. If the statues of deities are peeling due to age, I decorate them. Or if bridges, roads, or ditches are impassable, I repair them. 9. If there are scholars or travelers from distant lands who are stranded, I assess the distance and provide them with travel provisions to help them return home. 10. I hold the humble position of Investigating Official (official title). Whenever I encounter death row inmates, I try to save them from death. I often put myself in others' shoes, helping people in their urgent needs and rescuing them.

He Zhen's (name) Daughter

Liu (name), wife of He Zhen (name), was twenty-six years old. She had a son who was two years old and a daughter who had just turned one. Suddenly, one night, she dreamed of entering the underworld, where it was decreed that Liu (name) would die in the third month of the coming year. After waking up, she thought about it and wept incessantly in worry and fear. Her husband and relatives all asked her the reason for her weeping. She replied, 'I dreamed of entering the underworld, where it was decreed that I only have half a year to live. If I truly die then, I will have no regrets, but I am ashamed that my children will be left without support.' Suddenly one day, she reflected on herself and commissioned an artist to paint an image of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, which she respectfully enshrined and offered to, abstaining from meat and wine. Day and night, she personally faced the Buddha and diligently recited the Vajra Prajna Sutra (Diamond Sutra). She dedicated the merits and made a vow, saying, 'May my Buddha have compassion and extend my lifespan. If I can live to forty-five years old, so that my children will have reached the age of marriage, then I can die and enter the Yellow Springs (underworld) with my eyes closed.' She recited diligently every day. At thirty-eight years old, her son married a wife, and at forty-three years old, her daughter married a husband, fulfilling her wish. In the winter of the fourth year of the Taihe era (369 AD), she turned exactly forty-five years old. She gave away all her clothes and possessions, adorned the Buddha image, and completed all good deeds. One day, she told all her relatives and friends, 'My death is near.' He Zhen (name) thought she was possessed by demons and did not believe it. On New Year's Eve, Liu (name) invited a virtuous Shramana (monk), respectfully before the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), to administer the Eight Precepts, bathed and changed her clothes, and stayed alone in a room, sitting in the lotus position, loudly reciting the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra (Diamond Sutra). After reciting, she was silent. Her children and relatives all entered the room to look at her, and she was sitting upright.

Then he sat in meditation and passed away, having already entered Nirvana. His appearance remained solemn and lifelike, with only the crown of his head still warm and burning to the touch. All the fourfold assembly (bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, upasikas) and common people who saw or heard of this event, without exception, took refuge in and revered the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), praising this rare occurrence. Her husband, He Zhen, followed the funeral rites for a deceased monk, building a pagoda for burial in the northern suburbs of Jingzhou. (From Youyang Zazu). Military Officer During the Qianfu era (874-879 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, the Yanzhou Governor-General, Minister Cui, had very strict laws. A military officer was absent from the morning assembly. Minister Cui was furious and ordered his attendants to execute him. The military officer's expression did not change at all as he faced execution. People found it strange. After the execution, around midnight, the military officer awoke to find his body lying in the street, so he ran home. His wife and children were terrified, thinking he was a ghost. The officer said to his wife and children, 'I am not a ghost. When I was executed, it was like being in a drunken dream, and I didn't know anything. Now I have suddenly woken up and returned home.' The whole family was overjoyed. The next morning, he went to the front of the tent to thank Minister Cui. Minister Cui was astonished and asked, 'What magic do you possess that you dare to return?' The military officer replied, 'I have no other magic. From childhood until now, I have recited the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra (金剛經) three times every day. Yesterday morning, I overslept and missed the time for reciting the sutra, violating military law.' Cui then asked, 'Did you know when you were being executed?' He replied, 'When I was first escorted out of the halberd gate, I only felt like I was in a drunken dream and don't remember anything.' He asked again, 'Where is the sutra you recite?' He replied, 'It is in the sutra box in the Buddhist kitchen at home.' Cui hurriedly ordered someone to bring it. When the box was opened, only five-colored rays of light were seen. When the sutra was taken out, it had already been cut into two pieces. Cui was greatly astonished and repented. He comforted the military officer, saying, 'I will give you silk and money so you can buy silver foil and transcribe this sutra one hundred times. Have monks at Yanshou Temple read and repent.' All were distributed, leaving ten copies of the sutra, which were respectfully offered in the Buddha Hall of the temple. He also ordered a painting to be made of the place of execution and the image of the cut sutra to display the miraculous event. (From Retribution Records). Sun Weng During the Zhenghe era of the Tang Dynasty, Sun Weng, a stonemason from Zhenzhou, recited the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra (金剛經) three times every day.

【English Translation】 English version One day, more than thirty people went into the mountains to quarry stones. Suddenly, the mountain collapsed, and all of them perished, except for Sun Gong, who survived in a crevice. After twelve years, his descendants quarried the stone, breaking through the crevice, and saw Sun Gong sitting upright, his appearance as before. The descendants were terrified and prostrated themselves, asking Sun Gong how he had survived. Sun Gong said, 'I constantly recite the Vajra-chedika Prajna-paramita Sutra (金剛經).' They also asked if he was hungry, and he said, 'Initially, I ate a shortbread, and I have not felt hungry since.' Sun Gong asked, 'Is the scripture I used to read still there?' The descendants replied, 'Yes.' So they went home and remotely retrieved the scripture to read. There was a round hole in the scripture, just the size of a shortbread. All who saw and heard of this praised the scripture for its inconceivable merits, capable of saving Sun Gong from the suffering of hunger, thirst, and imminent death.

Magistrate Liu

In the past, there was a magistrate Liu in Pi Shan (毗山), who was honest and upright in his official duties and had strict family rules. He recited the Vajra-chedika Prajna-paramita Sutra (金剛經) three times a day, without interruption in cold or heat. When he previously served as a secretary for the Transport Commissioner, his wife was pregnant for many months and dreamed of a monk coming from the sky, saying, 'I have something to report to you. This poor monk has cultivated for more than sixty years, but because worldly ties are not yet severed, I must be reborn again. Considering that you are destined to have mature good roots, I have come to rely on you, hoping you will take me in.' Magistrate Liu said, 'Since you do not despise me, please instruct me.' The monk then entered the bedroom, and Magistrate Liu woke up in anger. The next day, his wife gave birth to a daughter, who was exceptionally intelligent. At the age of seven, without having studied with a teacher, she already understood the scriptures. She followed her father in reciting the Vajra-chedika Prajna-paramita Sutra (金剛經) every day, and in less than a month, she could recite it from memory. Her parents were very happy. At the age of nineteen, she composed poems. The daughter, having just recovered from an illness, and it being summer, suddenly wrote a poem about mosquitoes, saying, 'Yesterday I did not agree to meet you, but today you boldly enter my boudoir. You may feast on my jade body, yet you still make coquettish sounds to tease me.' Her father was furious upon hearing this and summoned her to the hall, severely questioning her intentions, intending to put her to death. Her mother rushed to her rescue, asking for the reason. The daughter said, 'Last night, mosquitoes bit me, and today I wrote this poem, there is nothing else.' The mother then went to tell the father, explaining the reason. The father said, 'Since you are an unmarried woman, how can you...

【English Translation】 English version: There are such words, every sentence filled with emotion. The daughter said to her father, 'Otherwise, please let me inscribe.' So, the daughter composed four lines of poetry. The father took scissors as the topic, and the daughter replied spontaneously, 'The affectionate two strands are joined together, the heartless two strands are separated. Quickly take from the waist, the length is up to you to cut.' The father smiled and said nothing. The daughter then returned to her room, bathed and changed clothes, and came out to the hall to tell her father, 'Your daughter almost died just now. It is better to bid farewell to my parents and leave early.' Then she composed a verse, saying, 'For nineteen years, I have been a guest in purity, without flowers or leisure, clearly and distinctly. Returning, I leave it to the east, west, north, and south. Life is over, death is over, regardless of age. Today, turning around, encountering the true void, a round of bright moon is clear and bright. Difficult to describe, difficult to paint, with flowers in my hair, I sit in lotus position and pass away.'

Song Chengxin

In the second year of Shaoxing (1132 AD) in the Song Dynasty, there was Song Chengxin, who lived in Huating County, Xiuzhou. Because he suffered from a stomach-turning disease, he could not be cured by hundreds of medicines for several years. Suddenly one night, he dreamed of a Buddhist monk who told Chengxin, 'You are the karmic debt of a previous life, which has led to you suffering from various illnesses in this life. Do you know that men and women in the world, whether suffering from hemiplegia, or tired lameness, or blindness, deafness, and muteness, or illness, lying in bed for years, unable to die, those whose breath is cut off, their souls are taken to the underworld to examine the sins committed in their previous and present lives, the causes and effects of karma, without any difference. If someone offers the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra, whether written by themselves or others, or upheld throughout their life, as soon as they have a thought, it will alarm the officials of the underworld to examine their good deeds, first releasing the soul to attach to the body, and then encountering a good doctor, their illness will be cured immediately.' After waking up, the next day, he asked his wife to burn incense and personally vowed before all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to willingly offer one thousand volumes of the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra, and to uphold it himself throughout his life. Later, he dreamed again of a Vajra deity who gave him a pill and told Chengxin to swallow it. The next day, his illness was cured, and after a month of recuperation, his body was light and healthy, and his appearance and spirit were restored to their former state. All who saw and heard it praised with their palms together, this Sutra.

Tang Zhen

Tang Zhen of the Song Dynasty (1127-1279) was a prison warden in Kuaiji County, Shaoxing Prefecture (now Shaoxing, Zhejiang). He recited the Diamond Sutra three times daily, without fail in cold or heat. In the eighth year of Shaoxing (1138), he, along with Chu Xun and Zhu Mao, embezzled official money. When the matter was discovered, the county reported it to Shaoxing Prefecture. Zhao Xiang Gong (Duke Zhao) ordered them to be sent to the Sili Yuan (Court of Judicial Review) for further investigation. When Tang Zhen and the others arrived, he dreamed of a Vajra deity at night, who told Tang Zhen, 'You have received a response from your daily recitation of the Diamond Sutra. Just rest assured. When the judgment is made, I will assist the Duke's divine pen to first sentence Chu Xun and Zhu Mao to be beaten with a spine-stick and exiled to a neighboring prefecture. You will be sentenced to one hundred strokes of the stick and returned to prison. When the embezzled money is fully repaid, you will be released home.' Upon waking up, he pondered repeatedly, 'Since I am the mastermind, the crime I committed should be the same. How can there be a difference in severity?' He could not understand it. When the time came for the judgment, everything happened exactly as in the dream, without the slightest deviation. Those who saw and heard it all felt it was strange. Only then did they realize that the merit of the Diamond Prajna (Diamond Wisdom) is inconceivable. Therefore, he was grateful for the Vajra deity's power, which secretly assisted Duke Zhao's judgment. What doubts could there be? Afterwards, he vowed to print and distribute three hundred copies of the Diamond Prajna Sutra and dedicated himself to diligently upholding it for the rest of his life. He lived to eighty-five years old and died without illness. (From Miscellaneous Records).

Wang Shi

In the ninth year of Shaoxing (1139) of the Song Dynasty (1127-1279), Wang Shi of Mingzhou (now Ningbo, Zhejiang) recited the Diamond Sutra daily. Because her husband was taking her to Qizhou (now Qishan, Shaanxi) to take up his post, she had been pregnant for twenty-eight months and could not give birth. Moreover, due to illness, her body was very weak. She was very worried that during childbirth, both mother and child would be in danger. She was filled with anxiety and fear. One day, she stood leaning against the door and happened to see a strange monk who taught her, 'Let us increase blessings together.' After Wang Shi gave him money as alms, the monk said, 'Madam has good roots. Why not print and distribute the Diamond Sutra? If you vow to print one thousand copies, you can increase your blessings and longevity in this life, have your parents, children, and grandchildren reunited, and have all your wishes fulfilled. Blessings will extend to seven generations of ancestors, and all deceased relatives will be liberated and ascend.' Wang Shi suddenly realized and followed the monk's instructions.

【English Translation】 Thereupon, she printed and distributed one thousand copies of the Diamond Sutra, offered a vegetarian feast to one thousand monks, and recited the sutra one thousand times. She personally went to Tianning Temple to repent before the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), praying for protection so that both she and her child would be safe on the day of delivery. Her sincerity was quickly answered. After the vegetarian feast, she returned home. At midnight, she had a dream in which she saw a Vajra deity pointing a pestle at Wang's abdomen, causing unbearable pain. Upon waking, she found that she had given birth to two boys in bed, with perfect features that were pleasing to the eye. Relying on the merit of the Prajna Sutra, she was protected by the heavenly deities, and the retribution was so swift. Wang was overjoyed to have both mother and sons safe. Thereafter, she devoted herself to vegetarianism and recited the sutra without ceasing. She lived to the age of sixty-one and died suddenly without illness. She personally saw two messengers leading her to Yama (the King of Hell). The King asked her, 'What good deeds did you do in your lifetime?' Wang replied, 'Since childhood, I have recited the Vajra Prajna Sutra and have not missed a day until now.' The King bestowed a golden bed upon Wang and allowed her to sit beside the hall. As she recited the Diamond Sutra once, the bitterness and suffering of hell ceased for a moment, and all those suffering in hell universally received grace and benefit. The King asked Wang again, 'Why don't you recite the mantra?' She replied, 'There is no mantra text in the world.' Thereupon, the King ordered the ghost officers to retrieve the mantra text from the treasury and give it to Wang, instructing her, 'When you return to the mortal realm, circulate this mantra, and do not lose it.' The King also said, 'After Wang's life ends in the future, she will be reborn directly in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and will not come here again.'

The Mantra for Perfecting Omissions says:

Om (seed syllable) Hulu Hulu Sheye Qie Soho First, dedicate the merit to the true suchness reality, may our minds be in perfect accord. Second, dedicate the merit to the unsurpassed Buddha fruit of Bodhi, may our thoughts be perfectly fulfilled. Third, dedicate the merit to all sentient beings in the Dharma realm, may we be reborn together in the Pure Land.

Scholar Zhu

Scholar Zhu of Suzhou Prefecture in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), dressed in Confucian robes and engaged in the imperial examination, was usually unaware of the wonders of Buddhism. One day, while strolling leisurely, he happened to visit Tiger Hill Temple, where Chan Master Foyin was lecturing on the Diamond Prajna Sutra, reaching the passage 'All conditioned dharmas are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows; like dew and lightning; thus should you contemplate them.' The master explained the general meaning of the Buddha's teachings one by one.

【English Translation】 English version: Zhu Wen was very happy to hear this. He thought to himself that he had never heard such Buddhist teachings before, and the principles within were profound. It was a pity that he hadn't heard it completely. He happily returned home. The next day at noon, he suddenly fell asleep and dreamed of a ghost official escorting five criminals, with Zhu Wen following behind. After walking about two li (Chinese unit of distance, approximately 500 meters), he saw a large street and entered an alley, where there was a house with a blue cloth curtain. The ghost official lifted the curtain, and the criminals all went inside. They arrived at the kitchen and saw soup in a bucket on the stove, and the criminals all went to drink it. Zhu Wen also felt thirsty and was about to drink when the ghost official stopped him, saying, 'Those who have heard the Buddha's teachings must not drink.' He then woke up in shock. Doubting the dream, he walked to the main street and entered the alley, and indeed there was the house, exactly as in the dream. Zhu Wen knocked on the door, and the head of the household, seeing that it was a Jinshi (a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations), hurriedly welcomed him. Zhu Wen asked, 'Just now, in your kitchen, was there any activity?' The head of the household then asked his family, who said that six puppies had just been born in the kitchen, and one of them had died. Zhu Wen was immediately alarmed and sweating, thinking that if it were not for the power of hearing the Buddha's teachings, he would have fallen into the womb of a dog and become a beast. Therefore, he abandoned his old habits and wholeheartedly recited the Vajra Prajna Sutra (Diamond Sutra), without ceasing through cold and heat. He lived to eighty-nine years old, and his merits were complete. On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, he invited masters from various mountains, virtuous friends, and relatives to see him off, and he ascended to heaven standing on a tree branch in the back garden, reciting a four-line verse to bid farewell to everyone, and passed away peacefully while standing. The verse said: 'Eighty-nine years old Zhu Gong, with both hands splitting the void, stepping on floating clouds, shattering his body, and passing away standing east of the Bodhi tree.'

Yang Yan

In the seventh year of the Qiandao era of the Song Dynasty (1171 AD), on the thirteenth day of the third month, Yang Yan, the Left Senior Grand Master, Academician of the Dragon Diagram Pavilion awaiting orders, and Commissioner for the You Shen Temple, was the son of Prince He. He happened to dream of his father, Prince He, and his mother. Yang Yan recalled that his parents had already passed away and worried that they were about to leave quickly, so he pleaded with them to stay for ten months. Prince He agreed. Yang Yan bowed again, offering wine and treating them as if they were alive. Yang Yan wept, and Prince He and his wife also wept. Yang Yan asked his father, Prince He, whether the merits he usually cultivated and the money and goods he burned as offerings could be used. Prince He said, 'They can be used.'

【English Translation】 English version: Then Longtu (an official title) asked, 'Which is superior, the merit of Buddhism or Taoism?' King He (ruler of the underworld) said, 'In a single day, it's merely a matter of raising and lowering hands.' Longtu then asked, 'Which scripture in the world is the most supreme?' King He replied, 'The underworld deeply reveres the Diamond Prajna Paramita Sutra. If you were to print and donate a thousand copies for me, that would be the foremost merit.' Longtu, thinking he desired funerary objects, replied, 'I can have them made and presented to you.' King He said, 'Very well.' It was already late in the day. In a short while, a messenger came running from the water, reporting that a golden decree would pass through Chuzhou at You time (5-7 PM). Longtu inquired again, 'Where is Your Excellency now?' King He said, 'I oversee the earth department.' While still reminiscing, Longtu suddenly awoke, feeling immense sorrow, tears soaking his pillow. He then thought of King He's brilliance and clarity, his expression lifelike. King He was a great general of the Song Dynasty, who had fought countless battles to quell rebellions, achieving numerous merits. He accepted surrenders without killing, saving many lives. He served in the palace for forty years, never unjustly punishing a single person. His loyalty, kindness, and leniency deserved the assistance of merit, allowing him to preside over something. Moreover, he could see the merits cultivated in the human world, see people reciting the Diamond Sutra, and the funerary objects burned, all of which could be used in the underworld. He also knew that karmic retribution for good and evil, the underworld and the living world are the same, without separation, which is enough to encourage people to do good. On the day of Shakyamuni Buddha's (釋迦世尊) birth, Longtu respectfully arranged a grand Water and Land Dharma Assembly (水陸大齋) for both the living and the deceased at Chanfu Zisi Temple (禪福資寺), as well as offerings to monks, and ritually performed the Golden Light Sutra's Three Virtues Wonderful Repentance (金光明三德妙懺) for seven days and nights, ordering the monks to recite the Diamond Prajna Paramita Sutra (金剛般若波羅蜜經) a complete collection, totaling five thousand and forty-eight scrolls, to benefit his parents in the underworld.

Chengju Zhou Xing (承局周興)

In the first year of Chunxi (淳熙) of the Song Dynasty (1174 AD), Zhou Xing (周興), a Chengju (承局) of Yangzhou Prefecture (楊州府), had recited a scroll of the Diamond Sutra (金剛經) daily since childhood, never wavering in his commitment whether for public or private matters. Once, he was entrusted by Prefect Mo Dui (莫隊) to carry gifts of silk, candles, and birthday presents worth over a thousand strings of cash to the capital to deliver to a noble on his birthday. Arriving at the Yusan (郁三) family's inn at Guazhou Ferry (瓜洲渡口), he lodged there. Yusan and his wife, seeing the Chengju's valuable luggage, called Yuer (郁二), Yusan's brother, to discuss a plot.

As he was about to take office, he personally went to the Tianning Temple and, before the Buddha and Bodhisattva images, burned incense and made a vow, saying: 'I will take my family of nine to Wenzhou to take office. My first vow is that after arriving, my whole family will not eat beef. My second vow is that when I am in power and handling government affairs, I will always act with expediency, show compassion for the lonely and poor, relieve others' urgent needs, and rescue others from danger. When the evaluation period is over and I return home, I vow to donate wealth and write a volume of the Diamond Sutra (金剛般若經 Jīngāng Bōrě Jīng), respectfully place it in the Buddha hall, and offer it forever.' Later, after completing three evaluation periods, he and his colleague, Judicial Officer Yuan Zhen Digong, bought a boat together to cross the sea and return home. The military advisor's family lived in the front cabin of the boat, and the judicial officer lived in the rear cabin. When the boat reached the boundary of Shaoxing Prefecture, it suddenly encountered a violent storm, and darkness enveloped all sides, causing everyone to panic. They saw sea ghosts and gods cutting the boat into two sections. Guo Chengsi, in the front cabin, had favorable winds and sailed directly to the shore. The judicial officer, in the rear cabin, had all his people and luggage sink into the sea. This was because the judicial officer had been corrupt and perverted justice during his tenure, leading to this retribution. Military Advisor Guo Chengsi had a kind heart, was law-abiding, vowed to save people, and was protected by the power of the Diamond Sutra, allowing him to return home safely. The retribution of good and evil is as clear as pointing to the palm of one's hand. Those who saw and heard this could not help but be amazed. Zhao Bi Zhao Bi, a scholar from Sizhou, went to the capital to take the imperial examination. His wife had already passed away. Later, Zhao Bi passed the examination and returned home. When he was about ten miles away from home, he saw his deceased wife by the roadside in a dreamlike state, pleading very sorrowfully, saying: 'When I was alive, I killed many living beings. Every time crabs were available, I would buy them to make drunken crabs and eat them wantonly. Since my death, I have been sent by Yama (閻摩 Yánmó), the King of Hell, to Crab Mountain, where swarms of crabs pinch my eyes and body, causing me to bleed and suffer day and night. Moreover, I should not have spat out leftover wine and tea, which accumulated to five shi (石 dàn), nine dou (斗 dǒu), seven sheng (升 shēng), and five he (合 gě) in the underworld, causing my lifespan to be reduced by twelve years. I also suffered in hell for twenty-one days. Now, Yama will send someone again, and if the prison guard supervises me to sell wine, to wait for...'

【English Translation】 English version: The impermanence ghost chased after the departed soul. Julai came to buy wine, but had to draw blood from the slave to meet the sale requirement, with the 'sheng' (a unit of volume) and 'he' (another unit of volume) needing to be filled to the original amount. Otherwise, they would be subjected to hell. Now hearing that her husband had passed the imperial examination with honors and returned, she came to plead. The underworld deeply respects the merit of writing the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra). She hoped to sell the slave's dowry, and if seven volumes of the sutra could be copied for the slave, relying on the merit of this Prajna (wisdom), it could indeed save her from the suffering of hell. Her husband agreed. As soon as he arrived home, he immediately took out money to hire monks to copy the sutra. Only two volumes had been copied when one day, he prepared sacrificial offerings and went to his wife's grave. Just as dusk approached, he suddenly saw an old man who said, 'I am the local earth deity. Your wife, thanks to the merit of copying the sutra, was personally approved by Yama (the King of Hell) yesterday at noon and has ascended to the heavens. She will no longer be seen in the underworld.' Haven't you seen Zen Master Foyin's (Song dynasty monk) text on abstaining from killing? It says: 'All kinds of creatures with scales and feathers, sentient beings and the Buddha have the same nature. It is only because of using the mind wrongly at that time that they have different heads and horns in this life. Swimming in the water, playing in the forest, how can you bear to make them your daily meals? Grinding knives, cooking fires, or grinding into meat paste, unable to speak, their eyes still watch. Either hammered or stabbed with a knife, dragged into the boiling pot, it is truly terrifying. Chasing after burning hair and plucking feathers, scraping skin and removing scales, scraping the spine and gouging the heart, they still exhale. Beautifying your throat, boasting of good taste, advising sons and advising wives to say it is delicious. Only knowing to indulge desires, indulging in ignorance, not fearing that the underworld records everything without error. When life ends, enemies come to confront, facing Yama, how dare you hide? Reporting everything from beginning to end without any difference, where can you escape from the charcoal furnace and boiling pot? Advise virtuous heroes, be sure to abstain from killing, do not take sentient beings lightly. Eat one piece of their flesh, you must return one piece of flesh, the words of the ancient sages are ultimately not false. Abstaining from killing and being able to buy and release living beings can avoid entering Avici (the lowest level of hell), the uninterrupted hell.' Also, in the Mantin Fang (a type of ci poetry) it says: 'How many have scales, countless have feathers, realizing the Buddha-nature, all are the same as people. Why, just to satisfy the appetite, do you painfully dissect sentient beings with knives. Heads turn, fresh blood splatters, scattered and roasted. Unable to bear to see them, my throat has just swallowed, dragon liver and phoenix marrow, after all, without a trace. In vain, one gains premature death and many misfortunes in life. I advise the people of the world to awaken!'

Daughter of Li Xuanzong

The daughter of Li Xuanzong of Jiangling County, Jingzhou, at the age of thirteen, dreamed of a Brahman monk who said to her: 'You have good roots, why not uphold and recite the Vajra-sūtra (Diamond Sutra)?' He also said, 'If there are men and women in the world who can recite one chapter daily with a pure heart, they can increase their lifespan in the mortal realm. After a hundred years, when their life ends, they will be born in the heavens. If one can ultimately understand Prajna (wisdom), it is appropriate to reach the other shore of Nirvana (liberation). Or if someone reads the scriptures, even if they have not yet achieved complete accomplishment, after death, entering the underworld, they cannot be detained and recorded, and they will be judged to be born into wealthy families, enjoying all kinds of excellent rewards.' The daughter of Xuanzong followed the monk's instructions and recited three chapters daily. At the age of twenty-four, she did not wish to marry. Suddenly, she suffered from typhoid fever and died three days later. Two messengers led her to see Yama (Lord of Death), who examined her and found her innocent, and saw a Buddha manifest above the woman's head. The King said, 'Since this woman has the merit of Prajna, she should be judged to return to life.' As he was about to release her, the King instructed, 'Your father has an enemy, so I sent you to the mortal realm, first reducing your lifespan by twenty-four years, and soon you will be summoned to the underworld for confrontation. Because your father likes to cut live fish into sashimi, there are now more than seven thousand fish suing for their lives. If you don't believe it, go back to the mortal realm and ask your father if he dreams every night of falling into a net and having headaches every day. This is the fish seeking retribution.' After the woman returned to life, she told her father about the affairs of the underworld one by one. Her father was shocked and at a loss, so he went with his daughter to the Great Buddha Hall of Tianning Temple, offered a vegetarian feast to a hundred monks, vowed to abstain from meat and alcohol, and hand-copied forty-nine volumes of the Vajra Prajna Sutra (Diamond Sutra). After the copying of the scriptures was completed, Xuanzong suddenly dreamed one night of hundreds of boys in green clothes, all bowing to Xuanzong, saying, 'We were killed by you in the past, and each of us in the underworld rejoiced in our grievances, demanding your life. Now, thanks to the merit of copying the scriptures, we all receive the power of goodness, escape the suffering of the three evil realms, and each obtain rebirth in a good path.' Since you have resolved the grievances, the underworld has restored your original lifespan and added to your longevity.' Xuanzong was overjoyed upon hearing this and has since persisted in upholding and reciting.

【English Translation】 English version The recitation of scriptures should not cease, and doing good should not be abandoned. To live to the age of one hundred and twenty years, without illness, to bathe and peacefully pass away. (From 'Miscellaneous Records') Wang Digong Wang Digong, a county sheriff, enjoyed hunting with hawks and killing living beings for pleasure. He had a wife at home who recited the Diamond Sutra daily. One day, as his wife was reciting the sutra, she saw her husband returning from hunting. His wife earnestly勸說勸說 him to recite the fifteenth section, 'Merits of Upholding the Sutra,' together. Wang Digong refused to finish the entire scroll and instead went into the kitchen to cook and kill animals, indulging in drinking and feasting. Five years later, Wang Digong suddenly suffered a stroke and was bedridden for over a year without improvement. One day, he saw two messengers coming to take him away, and he died with his life exhausted, with only a breath remaining in his heart. The two messengers led him to see Yama, the King of the Underworld. Yama angrily rebuked Wang Digong, saying, 'Since you enjoyed the court's俸祿, why did you not cultivate more merit? Instead, you delighted in killing living beings, reducing your lifespan and cutting off your俸祿.' He ordered the prison guards to drive him into the cauldron of boiling water. The ghost official checked the records and reported to the king, 'Although this person has committed acts of killing, his record of good deeds is as heavy as a mountain. In his lifetime, he was once persuaded by his wife to recite one section of the Diamond Sutra. Although the merit is like a single piece of paper, it outweighs his record of evil deeds. He should be pardoned and allowed to return to the world of the living.' Yama said, 'Take a ladle of soup from the cauldron and pour it on his back, then release him back to the world of the living.' Thus, Wang Digong was able to live again. Later, he suffered from carbuncles on his back, which festered all over his body, causing unbearable pain that no medicine could cure. One day, he asked his wife to make a vow on his behalf before the Buddha, saying, 'From now on, I vow never to kill living beings again. When I recover from my illness, I will personally transcribe the Diamond Sutra, observe齋戒 and vegetarianism, and uphold the scriptures.' Suddenly, one night, he dreamed of a monk who rubbed his back three times with his hand. When he looked at his back in the morning, the carbuncles had healed completely, leaving no trace. Such is the retribution of good and evil. (From 'Records of Retribution') Feng Inspector Feng Inspector recited three volumes of the Diamond Prajna Sutra daily. At the age of twenty-eight, one day, for matters of state, he drafted a memorial to the emperor. That night, at the fourth watch, he suddenly saw two messengers chasing him into the underworld, leading him to see Yama, the King of the Underworld. Yama said, 'Your lifespan should have been seventy-nine years, and your official position should have reached the Privy Council. Because of the memorial you submitted, it is harmful to the country and detrimental to the people.'

【English Translation】 English version: 'You should have your emolument revoked and your lifespan reduced.' Feng (personal name) was terrified and prostrated himself, reporting, 'This subject's allotted lifespan is not yet exhausted. I beg for the grace of rebirth. I vow to uphold the scriptures for the rest of my life, constantly perform good deeds in secret, and commit no crimes or transgressions. If I violate heavenly laws, I will accept the punishment.' Yama, the Heavenly King (Yama, the god who rules hell), took pity on his repentance and allowed him to return to the mortal realm, repeatedly admonishing him, 'All those who hold power and authority can create a ledger. What you do during the day, you must record at night. If you cannot record it, you must not do it. This is the art of prolonging life.' As long as you do one good deed, care for the people, and show compassion for their plight, you can increase your blessings and longevity. If you use a harsh and exploitative heart, the Supreme God will detest you, and it will shorten your life and reduce your emolument.' Feng (personal name) obtained the opportunity for rebirth and performed acts of convenience every day, benefiting the country and the people. His hidden virtues became increasingly apparent, and he lived to the age of ninety-eight, holding the official position of Prime Minister. Suddenly, one day, he fell ill in bed. His ninth son, who was only eleven years old, was playing in front of the hall and saw countless Ox-Headed and Horse-Faced Demons (Ox-Headed and Horse-Faced Demons, jailers in hell). The son asked the demons, 'Why have you come here?' The demon official replied, 'We have been specially sent to welcome Yama, the Heavenly King (Yama, the god who rules hell).' His son was terrified and ran crying into the hall, telling his father what he had seen. The Prime Minister laughed and clapped his hands, saying, 'In life, I was a pillar of the state; in death, I will be Yama, the King (Yama, the god who rules hell). This is my duty.' A verse says: Do not flaunt your literary talent with a pencil; returning to the Empty King (Śūnyatā, Buddhist term for emptiness) of Buddhism is true joy. Once you have resolved to return to the Great Path, you do not need to guard against the obstruction of the Six Robbers (Six Robbers, Buddhist term referring to the six external temptations of sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma). Persuading your wives and concubines to cultivate together can ultimately free you from illness. Even if you reach the highest rank of nobility, it is like a flower, fleeting and transient. From now on, rely on the sword of wisdom in your later years, and may your name be entrusted to Danxia Mountain (Danxia Mountain, a famous Buddhist mountain). After bathing and changing clothes, he sat in meditation and passed away. Another verse says: Striking a drum in the vast ocean, hearing a bell on the summit of Mount Sumeru (Mount Sumeru, the sacred mountain in Buddhism). When the Karma Mirror (Karma Mirror, Buddhist term, a mirror reflecting personal karma) shines, it shatters and breaks through, revealing the void.

Jiang Xuesheng (personal name) Jiang Xuesheng (personal name) of Songzhou (Songzhou, place name), who lived in a village, died prematurely at the age of twenty-three due to a sudden illness. He saw two messengers chasing his soul and leading him to see Yama, the Heavenly King (Yama, the god who rules hell). Yama, the Heavenly King (Yama, the god who rules hell), said, 'You cultivated blessings in your previous life, and it was destined that you would live to eighty-two years in this life, pass the imperial examination in the Dingchou year (Dingchou year, year in the sexagenary cycle), and become a high-ranking official. You should not have killed and eaten cattle, violating heavenly laws. According to the decree of the Jade Emperor (Jade Emperor, the highest god in Taoism), you are sentenced to reduced lifespan and revoked emolument. Since you have studied, have you not heard of the seven days and seven nights of thunder and rain in Haizhou (Haizhou, place name), and the stone drum that fell from the sky?'

【English Translation】 English version: It is recorded: 'All things are created by the mind. Being an ox is the most arduous. Look at those who die violent deaths, they are all people who eat beef.' Once there was a Jinshi (title given to those who passed the highest-level imperial exam) named Yu Xin (person's name), who killed oxen and ate their meat. Relying on his literary talent and intelligence, he slandered the Three Jewels (Buddhist term referring to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha). After his death, he suffered in various hells and is now transformed into a turtle. King Yama (the King of Hell) sent a ghost officer to bring the turtle before the court, so that Jiang student could see it. The turtle had nine heads, and blood was flowing from its heads and eyes, causing it immense pain. This is Yu Xin. A ghost officer said to Jiang student, 'You must quickly tell the Emperor (King Yama) to reform and do good deeds, and beg for the favor of being returned to life. If he is sentenced to hell, there will be no hope of release.' Jiang student said, 'What way is there to seek guidance?' The ghost officer said, 'The underworld deeply respects writing, receiving, and upholding the Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra (name of a Buddhist scripture) and the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra (name of a Buddhist scripture). If you make this vow, you will be freed.' Having received these words, Jiang student told the Emperor, 'Considering that my parents are old and there are no other brothers to serve them, and that I was young and ignorant, I committed serious crimes. Although I have read Yu Xin's writings, I have never slandered the Buddha, the Dharma, or the Sangha. Since my lifespan has not yet ended, I beg the Emperor to release me back to the world to care for my parents, and I vow to write the Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra and the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, to be a vegetarian for life, and to diligently uphold them.' The Emperor, pitying his repentance and turning from evil to good, ordered him to be released back to life. The Emperor warned him, 'When you return to the world, you must care for your parents, respect the Three Jewels, recite the scriptures, and cultivate good deeds. If you violate this again, you will fall into the Yellow Springs (the underworld) after death, and even if a thousand Buddhas appear, there will be no repentance.' After Jiang student returned to life, relatives and neighbors all came to ask about the reason, and all were ashamed and reformed themselves.

Huo Military Advisor Huo Military Advisor was reciting the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra (name of a Buddhist scripture) when suddenly he saw the ground in the hall split open and Bao Longtu (person's name) emerged. Bao Longtu said, 'I am the Swift Retribution Office.' The military advisor asked the Swift Retribution Office, 'You only report evil deeds and not good deeds. Good people suffer hunger and cold, while evil people have abundant food and clothing. Honest people have difficulty making a living, while corrupt people often enjoy glory and wealth. Filial people suffer much hardship, while rebellious people are loved and seen. Swift Retribution Office, are you truly effective? Are you truly manifest? If you are effective, you should show your power. If you are manifest, you should teach.'

【English Translation】 English version The seven scrolls contain boundless and wondrous meanings, filled with nectar that constantly irrigates, and the nectar of enlightenment drips coolly. From his white jade teeth flow śarīra (relics), and from his red lotus tongue emanate rays of light. Even if one has committed sins as high as mountains, reciting a few lines of the wondrous Dharma can dissolve them. After the monk finished speaking, he turned around and disappeared. Mr. Lu then awakened, thinking that it must have been the Buddha (enlightened one) and Avalokiteśvara (Bodhisattva of compassion) who transformed to advise me. He then hired a painter to create a scroll of Amitābha (Buddha of Infinite Light), Avalokiteśvara (Bodhisattva of Compassion), and Mahāsthāmaprāpta (Bodhisattva of Great Strength), setting up a seat to make offerings. He studied and recited the Lotus Sūtra and the Diamond Sūtra. In less than five years, he could recite them fluently from memory. Furthermore, for example, knowing how many pigs and sheep would be slaughtered the next day, he would prostrate himself before the Buddha the night before, burn incense, and recite one chapter of the Lotus Sūtra and seventeen chapters of the Diamond Sūtra, repenting before the Buddha, reciting the number of pigs and sheep to be slaughtered the next morning, wishing to transfer the merit of reciting the sūtras to liberate the slaughtered pigs and sheep, wishing to use this body to be reborn in the Pure Land early, and wishing to be free from these karmic debts at the time of my death. Every morning was the same, and Mr. Lu felt light and healthy, enjoying himself. At the age of eighty-one, half a month before his death, he invited relatives, friends, and neighbors, saying that he would pass away on the ninth day of the eleventh month. On that day, he simply prepared some vegetarian dishes to welcome those who came to say goodbye. On the appointed day, everyone came to attend the vegetarian meal, and after the meal, Mr. Lu indeed took a bath, changed his clothes, and passed away peacefully while sitting upright. All the scholars and villagers admired and praised him. At that time, Zhou Jing witnessed it personally and also saw him off. A verse says: Old Man Lu's life was truly extraordinary, his children and relatives smiling happily. Eighty-one years passed like a dream, with no doubt about the hundreds of thousands of samādhi (state of meditative consciousness). Killing does not hinder the true nature, and reciting the Buddha's name first empties the attachment to merit and demerit. He was moved by the compassionate Buddha to come and receive him, and in the crystal palace, white lotuses bloomed. A verse says: For more than sixty years, he specialized in the killing industry, secretly cultivating with a knife and scales in hand. Today, he finally attains the path to enlightenment, and lotuses can grow in water and bloom in fire.
