【English Translation】 English version The Diamond Sutra is the orthodox scripture of Mahayana Buddhism. The Tathagata (Buddha) said, 'All Buddhas, and the Dharma (teachings) of Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi (unsurpassed, complete, perfect enlightenment) attained by all Buddhas, come from this sutra.' Thus, this sutra is the marrow of the sacred teachings, and its merits are inconceivable. Those who recite this sutra can illuminate and break through all illusory appearances, see the source of their own nature, and directly reach the other shore of Nirvana (liberation). It is not merely that various blessings and responses are unfailingly effective. However, understanding the principle without calculating its merits may be possible for those with sharp faculties and superior wisdom. But for those of middle or lower capacity, if they do not see blessings, their faith will not be firm. How can they be made to enjoy reciting without being weary? Therefore, I have not only made sentence explanations but also compiled a collection of categorized responsive stories. The events recorded in ancient and modern biographies, which are reliably documented, number no less than several thousand. To include them all would be too cumbersome, and people might find it difficult to remember. Now, I have selected the fifty most essential ones, divided into eighteen categories, all of which respond immediately to sincere intentions, as quickly as an echo. They are indeed sufficient to transform the unbelieving and inspire people to enjoy reciting. However, the responses also vary in depth and magnitude. For example, prolonging life, healing illnesses, having children, passing the imperial examinations, escaping disasters, and returning to life after death are mostly enjoying worldly blessings, which are causes with outflows and not valued by those who practice transcendence. Only the section on 'Returning to the West' (rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss) can end birth and death, escape reincarnation, and directly ascend to the Land of Ultimate Bliss, where one can gather with all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. This is the true destination for those who truly study the Way. All recitation, explanation, writing, printing, and donation of this sutra are originally for seeking this. Other kinds of miraculous responses are merely incidental. Merits have depths, and effects have magnitudes. I hope that those who read this book will look at it from a high perspective. Respectfully inscribed by Recluse Guiyi, Wang Zesheng, on the eighth day of the second month of the twenty-sixth year of the Qianlong reign (1761).

Prolonging Life
Liang Dynasty (502-557 AD). During the Tianjian era. Dharma Master Yan resided at Zhaoti Monastery in Chang'an. He became a monk at the age of eleven. One day, he encountered a fortune teller who said, 'It's a pity you are intelligent but your lifespan is short, calculated to be only eighteen years.' Dharma Master Yan returned home, burned incense, paid homage to the Three Jewels, and made a vow, praying to be granted a scripture to diligently and wholeheartedly uphold. After praying, he randomly drew a scroll, which was the Diamond Sutra. He then wholeheartedly upheld it, day and night without ceasing. Suddenly, late one night, he saw five-colored light appearing in his room. Shortly after, he saw a Brahman monk (Indian monk), fifteen feet tall, who told Dharma Master Yan, 'You were supposed to die at eighteen, but due to the merit of upholding the Mahayana scripture, your lifespan has been extended.' After saying this, he disappeared. Therefore, he became even more diligent and assiduous. Later, he lived to be ninety-two years old and passed away peacefully without illness.
Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). Wu Si-xuan. During the Tianhou (Empress Wu Zetian) era, he served as a Taixue (Imperial Academy) Doctor. He recited the Diamond Sutra twice daily and experienced many miraculous responses. Wu Si-xuan fell ill in the capital. There was a shaman named Chu Xi'er, whose words were divinely accurate and skilled in astrology and prayer. Wu Si-xuan went to visit him. Chu Xi'er exclaimed in surprise, 'What kind of magic do you possess? Ghosts run away at the sight of you.' Wu Si-xuan knew it was the power of the scripture, and he became even more faithful and diligently recited the sutra, reciting it five times daily. His elder brother fell ill, and medical treatment was ineffective. Wu Si-xuan sincerely recited the sutra, and he recovered in three days. Wu Si-xuan once saw an old man on the Wei Bridge, over eighty years old, wearing coarse hemp mourning clothes. When asked who he was mourning for, he replied that it was for his mother. Wu Si-xuan found it strange. The old man replied, 'My mother was forty-three years old when a strange monk taught her that if she wanted to live a long life, she only needed to recite the Diamond Sutra. My mother resolved to recite it twice daily and lived to be one hundred and seven years old. My aunt and the mother of my neighbor also recited this sutra and both lived past one hundred years old.'
Jiangling. Li Xuan-zong. His daughter, at the age of thirteen, dreamed of a Brahman monk (Indian monk) who said, 'You have a kind heart, why don't you uphold and recite the Diamond Sutra? If any man or woman in the world can purify their mind and recite one chapter daily

【English Translation】 English version: Increasing blessings and prolonging life in the human realm, if one's lifespan is destined to end at a hundred years, one will ascend to the heavens after death. If one can thoroughly comprehend the Prajna Sutra (wisdom scripture), one can directly reach the other shore of Nirvana (liberation). Or if someone passes away before finishing reading the scriptures, even if they enter the underworld, they will not be detained, but will be judged to be reborn into a blessed and wealthy family, enjoying all kinds of blessings. A woman named Li followed the monk's advice and recited three volumes of scriptures every day. At the age of twenty-four, she was unwilling to marry. Suddenly, she contracted typhoid fever and died three days later. Two messengers led her to see King Yama. King Yama examined her records and found that she had no sins, and saw a Buddha's light above her head. King Yama said, 'Since this woman has the merit of reciting the Prajna Sutra, she should be sent back to life.' Before leaving, King Yama instructed her, 'Your father has a karmic debt of killing, and twelve years will be deducted from his lifespan first. Soon he will be summoned to the underworld for confrontation. Your father likes to cut live fish into sashimi, and now there are more than seven thousand fish suing your father for their lives. Your father dreams of falling into fishing nets every night, and has headaches every day. This is the fish seeking retribution.' After the woman returned to life, she told her father these things. The father was very frightened, so he and his daughter went to Tianning Temple, offered a vegetarian feast to a hundred monks, vowed to abstain from meat and alcohol, and personally transcribed forty-nine volumes of the Diamond Sutra. After finishing the transcription, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang (reigned 712-756 AD) dreamed at night of thousands of children in green clothes coming to pay their respects, saying, 'We were killed by you, each complaining of past grievances, demanding your life. Now, thanks to the merit of your transcribing the scriptures, we have been freed from the suffering of the three evil paths (three realms of woe) and reborn into good realms. Since you have resolved the grievances, your original lifespan has been restored, and your lifespan has been extended.' Emperor Xuanzong was very happy after hearing this, and from then on, he insisted on reciting the scriptures without interruption, living to be one hundred and twenty years old, and died without illness.
During the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD), there was a virtuous monk in Nanyue named Chushi, who was proficient in the Tripitaka and specialized in reciting the Diamond Sutra. When people asked him for Buddhist teachings, whether they were wise or foolish, noble or lowly, he would always say loudly, 'Go and recite the Diamond Sutra diligently!' He passed away at the age of one hundred and seventy-one. At the same time, there were also the White Vine Monk and the Boundless Monk, who also specialized in persuading people to recite the Diamond Sutra. The White Vine Monk passed away at the age of one hundred and thirty, and the Boundless Monk passed away at the age of one hundred and twenty-four.
Healing Illness
Wang Cheng, whose home was in Jinzhou, was stubborn and vulgar by nature. In the fourth year of the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), a plague broke out in his family, and all his family members died, but Wang Cheng was lucky enough to escape death.

【English Translation】 English version: Fang enjoyed eating dog meat, and as a result, his eyes went blind. He did not seek medical treatment, but only prayed to ghosts and spirits, but received no response for many years. Suddenly, a strange monk came and asked for alms, saying, 'The Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra can relieve all kinds of suffering. Can you accept it, layman?' Fang declined, saying that he could not see. The monk advised him to transcribe the sutra. Fang followed his advice and transcribed seven volumes. He asked the monk to recite the sutra for several days, and dreamed that the previous monk was holding a knife and cutting open his eyes, so he woke up in surprise. After waking up, he felt that he could see things, and after a long time, his eyes fully recovered their sight. From then on, he recited the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra for the rest of his life without interruption. Gou Longyi was from Lang Zhou. During the Changqing period (821-824 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, he worked as a hired laborer in Qi Xian. He often visited sick people in his village. Seeing someone transcribing the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra, Gou Longyi destroyed it and prevented others from transcribing it. After returning home, he became mute, and doctors could not cure him. He was foolish and ignorant for five or six years. Suddenly, he heard a neighbor reciting this sutra, and he said alertly, 'I slandered the true sutra before, so I got this mute disease. Now if I repent and apologize, and respectfully practice it for the rest of my life, can I speak again?' From then on, whenever he heard the sound of reciting the sutra, he leaned against the wall and listened. A month later, he accidentally walked into a temple and met an old monk, and bowed to him. The monk asked him what was the matter, and he pointed to his mouth to indicate that he was mute. The monk cut under his tongue with a knife, and he could speak. So the monk taught him to recite the sutra, and the sound was the same as the neighbor's recitation. Later, he visited the monk again, but could not find him again, only saw Subhuti painted on the wall. He then realized, 'It was him.' So he transcribed the sutra and painted a portrait of Subhuti, and worshiped it for the rest of his life. The recluse of Kunshan, Zhou Shaoyue, named Zhi Cheng, went blind at the age of fifty, his pupils reversed and turned blue. He considered himself a useless person, so he devoted himself to Buddhism to eliminate his past sins. Every morning, he recited three volumes of the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra. When reciting, he praised loudly. Even when guests came, he did not salute. This continued for fifteen years. One day, he suddenly could see things, but he still thought that blind people could not see things, which was caused by delusion. However, when people looked at his eyes, they could see the pupils moving. After two months, his vision fully recovered, and he could see farther than when he was young. Zhou Shaoyue was grateful for the power of the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra, and held the sutra more devoutly. He lived to be eighty years old before he died. During the Shaoxing period (1131-1162 AD) of the Song Dynasty, Song Chengxin of Xiuzhou suffered from vomiting disease, and medicine could not cure it for many years. Suddenly one night, he dreamed of a Brahmin monk.

【English Translation】 English version: He said, 'You are the karmic creditors from a past life, which has led to your current illness and suffering. Do you know that most men and women in the world who suffer from madness, paralysis, tuberculosis, lameness, blindness, deafness, muteness, or are afflicted with chronic illnesses and bedridden for years, have their souls detained in the underworld? There, their sins from past and present lives are examined and judged, with karmic consequences exacted without the slightest error. If someone offers and donates the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra), either by personally transcribing it, or by upholding it throughout their life, the moment they have this thought, it moves the officials of the underworld to investigate their meritorious deeds. First, their soul is released, and then they encounter a good doctor, and their illness is cured.' Upon waking up and realizing this, the next morning, they burn incense and make a vow before the Buddha, promising to donate one thousand copies of the Diamond Sutra. Later, they dream of a Vajra (Diamond) deity, who gives them a pill to swallow. The next day, their illness is completely healed. After a month of recuperation, their body returns to its former state. All who see and hear of this cannot help but praise and marvel.
Bearing a Son
Pu Kezhong, a student from Xiushui, and his wife, Wang, had a son and a daughter who both died from smallpox. Grieving excessively, Wang lost her eyesight. She then devoted herself to reciting the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra), without interruption for several years. One day, while reciting the sutra, water suddenly flowed from her left eye, causing a sharp, splitting pain, and then she suddenly regained her sight. After a few days, her right eye recovered in the same way. As a result, she recited the sutra with even greater devotion. That night, she dreamed that the Buddha told her, 'You originally had no son, but because of your recitation of the sutra, I grant you a son.' Wang suddenly became pregnant and gave birth to a son, whom they named Jingci.
Shi Zhenyu, from Yin County, was naturally inclined towards doing good deeds. He was over forty years old and had no son. He took the monk Miyun of Tiantong Temple as his teacher, who gave him the name Tongdeng and instructed him, 'If you wish to have an heir, you should make offerings to monks and uphold the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra), and you will naturally have a son.' That night, he followed the monk's instructions, paid homage to the Buddha, and made a vow. He dreamed of a Vajra (Diamond) deity, who wrote the character '兆' (zhào, trillion) and gave it to him. Upon returning home, he began to observe a vegetarian diet, hand-copying a volume of the Diamond Sutra and reciting it devoutly every day, without interruption in cold or hot weather. Every year, he went to the mountains to make offerings to monks, and diligently performed various good deeds without ever tiring. As a result, he later had five sons.
During the reign of Emperor Shunzhi (1644-1661) of the Qing Dynasty, Zhang Jie, the Zhejiang Provincial Military Commander, was sixty years old and still had no heir. His wife, Madam Chen, deeply believed in the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) and recited the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra) daily. She visited all the famous mountains to make offerings to monks.

【English Translation】 English version: In the second month of the fifth year of the Kangxi reign (1666), a Huayan repentance ceremony was held at Tiantong Temple. Five-colored clouds appeared in the mountains for seven days. In the seventh month of autumn, a concubine gave birth to a son. His family still adheres to the ancestral teachings, devoutly worshiping the Buddha and reciting scriptures without interruption.
Passing the Imperial Examination
During the Dali period (766-779) of the Tang Dynasty, Yang Xun, a clerk in Kuizhou, often recited the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra), was upright, and secretly did many good deeds. His son, at the age of twenty-three, studied for the imperial examinations and prepared to take the exam. Yang Xun dreamed one night that a Vajra deity said: 'Your recitation of the scriptures has been effective. I am specially informing you in advance that your son will surely be prominent in the future. If he takes the exam, he must change his name to Yang Chun to submit the paper, and I will help him in the process.' The next day, he had his son change his name before submitting the exam paper, and he indeed passed, ranking sixth. The following year, Yang Chun went to the province to take the exam and dreamed that a Vajra deity told him: 'This year's provincial exam topic is about practicing the kingly way to become a king. You can prepare to enter the academy in advance, but do not reveal this.' On the day of the exam, the topic was exactly as predicted, and he passed, ranking ninety-sixth. After completing the palace exam, the examiners selected the top three papers and presented them to the emperor for review. That night, Yang Chun dreamed again that the previous deity said: 'Your essay is excellent, but it does not match the chief examiner's intention and was placed in the fifth volume. I have already found your true paper and replaced the first-place paper on the emperor's desk. When the names are announced the day after tomorrow, you will surely win the first place in the country. This is because of the merit of your father's usual recitation of the true scriptures.' When the names were announced, it was indeed as predicted.
Xiang Xixian, who held the position of Vice Commissioner, was originally named Decha. He dreamed that he should have passed the Xinmao provincial examination, but because he defiled two young maids, his fame was removed by the deity in charge of the imperial examinations. Therefore, he worked hard to do good deeds and accumulate merit, donating funds and asking his friend Gao Songsheng to write the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra) in fine calligraphy and print it for distribution for more than ten years. He dreamed that he came to a place and saw a yellow paper with the name Xiang in the eighth place, the middle character blurred, and the character 'Yuan' below. A person next to him said: 'Look carefully, this is your ranking on the heavenly list.' So he changed his name to Mengyuan. In the Renzi year (1612), he passed the Beijing provincial examination, ranking twenty-ninth, and in the Jiwei year (1619), he passed the metropolitan examination, ranking third. Everyone suspected that the ranking in the dream was inaccurate. When he passed the palace examination, ranking fifth in the second class, he realized that it matched the number of the top three, exactly the eighth place. The list of the provincial examination was all white, while the list of the palace examination was yellow.

【English Translation】 English version: You Wei Mingding said.
During the Jiahe (present-day Jiaxing, Zhejiang) period, Shen Gong Guanghua, who once served as the salt and iron judge of Lianghuai, retired to his hometown. One day, while sitting idly with Wu Gong Song, a transport official from the same prefecture, they leisurely inquired about each other's daily activities. Shen Gong said, 'I eat vegetarian food every morning and recite the Diamond Sutra. I have been doing this for twenty years, and I have recited more than two collections.' Wu Gong didn't pay much attention to it. Not long after, Wu Gong suddenly rushed over early in the morning to congratulate Shen Gong, saying, 'Your son will surely pass the imperial examination in the southern province.' Shen Gong asked him the reason. Wu Gong said, 'I dreamed that someone said that a scholar in the prefecture, due to the merit of reciting the Diamond Sutra, had his son pass the examination. When I woke up, I only remembered that you were the most likely to fulfill this dream.' That autumn, Shen Gong's nephew, Shen Yingming, indeed passed the provincial examination in Yingtian Prefecture. It is said that Shen Gong recited the Diamond Sutra with the utmost sincerity, and he could silently recite it in his heart whether walking, sitting, or lying down. He used to travel back and forth to the home of Dongguo Jizi, reciting the sutra wholeheartedly on the way. It is estimated that the slaughterhouses, markets, and everything in the void that he passed by, due to being touched by the merit of the sutra, were liberated, and the number is unknown. Moreover, with a mind free from the four forms (self, person, sentient being, and life), he cultivated all good deeds and accumulated merit for generations, so his descendants successively passed the imperial examinations and became a prominent family in Jiaxing. All of this is the proof of the Diamond Sutra.
Exemption from Drowning
During the early Tang Dynasty, Yuan Chu (there was no Yuan Chu era in the Tang Dynasty, here it refers to the early Tang Dynasty), a man from Jiujiang, sold firewood in the market. He was seventy years old and often recited the Diamond Sutra. One day, while crossing the river, waves suddenly rose in the river, and all those who were crossing the river sank, only Yuan Chu floated on the water and drifted to the south bank. The people on the boats moored on the shore were very surprised, seeing a light several feet high emanating from Yuan Chu's back, thinking he was a noble person, and they competed to give him clothes and food. After getting acquainted, they learned that he was an old man from the countryside, so they asked him where the light came from. Yuan Chu said, 'I have been reading the Diamond Sutra for ten years, and the scripture is on my back. The disasters I have encountered in the past have all been avoided because of it.'
Bai Renzhe, during the Longshuo (661-663) period, served as the magistrate of Laiyang County, transporting rice to Liaodong. When crossing the sea, he encountered a strong wind, and it was dark all around. Bai Renzhe was very afraid and hurriedly recited the Diamond Sutra. Suddenly, as if in a dream, he saw a Brahman monk who said to him, 'You are reciting the true scripture, so I have come to save you.' After a while, the wind stopped, and more than eighty people crossed safely.

【English Translation】 English version The Venerable Qianhui recited the 'Diamond Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra), never ceasing regardless of heat or cold. Once, he and dozens of monks and laypeople sailed to Nan'an. Suddenly, they encountered a storm, and the ship was destroyed, with all the people on board sinking into the water. Only Qianhui, amidst the waves, encountered a clump of artemisia clinging to his body, gradually reaching the top of the artemisia. He drifted with the waves for three days and nights before reaching the shore. Upon careful inspection of the artemisia, there was a volume of the 'Diamond Sutra', completely untouched by the water. Qianhui reverently received this sutra and offered it with utmost sincerity. He lived to be one hundred and thirty years old, passing away peacefully in a seated posture. Fragrant smoke naturally emanated from within the sutra, gradually forming five-colored auspicious clouds, slowly ascending.
Stopping Incineration
In Raozhou, the silver mine households numbered over ten thousand, all living in thatched huts. During the Yanhe period (1118-1122), a fire broke out, and all the houses were burned down, except for one family that was untouched by the fire. At that time, Yang Tiji of the prefecture inquired of an old man. The old man replied, 'My family believes in Buddhism and simply recites the 'Diamond Sutra'.'
Repelling Ghosts
Wei Xun, the son of the Left Secretariat Shangde, recited the 'Diamond Sutra' and served as the General of the Surveillance Gate Guard. At that time, Cai Ce suddenly died, but after several days, he revived and said that when he arrived in the underworld, the messengers of the underworld were surprised that they could not capture him and were about to whip him. The messengers said, 'Wei Xun recites the 'Diamond Sutra', and he is protected by benevolent deities, so we cannot capture him.' Therefore, they dispatched other messengers to capture him again, and after a while, they returned and reported the same situation. The underworld official said, 'Temporarily cease the pursuit.' Wei Xun, upon hearing this, became even more diligent in his practice.
During the Tang Dynasty, Wang Tuo served as a resolute officer in the Yingyang Prefecture. Because of illness, he abstained from meat and fish and resolved to recite the 'Diamond Sutra' five times a day. Later, he contracted a disease and saw a group of ghosts approaching. Wang Tuo immediately recited the sutra, and the ghosts retreated upon hearing it, saying from afar, 'The king orders your capture; temporarily cease reciting the sutra.' Wang Tuo stopped reciting, and the ghosts all moved forward. Wang Tuo then fell into a coma. After a while, he saw another ghost saying, 'The king orders that the sutra reciter be temporarily released for six months.' Upon awakening, he single-mindedly recited the sutra day and night without ceasing. After six months, the ghosts no longer came. At night, he heard a voice calling from the air, 'Because of the merit of reciting the sutra, you shall live to be ninety years old.'
During the Tang Dynasty, Shen Jiahui served as a proofreader during the Zhenguan period (627-649). Due to an incident, he was exiled to Lanzhou and longed for his hometown very much. Every morning and evening, he faced east and paid homage to his parents.

【English Translation】 English version Mountain. Hoping to return alive. On the third day of the tenth month of the sixth year of Yonghui (655 AD), at night, I saw a boy with very handsome attire, who said he was the son of the Lord of Mount Tai (the god who governs Mount Tai). Thank you, paying respects to you, so I was sent to welcome you. The boy said to Jia Hui: 'If people do evil, they will not be punished while alive, but they will definitely be governed by ghosts after death. There is no chance of escaping. If you recite the Diamond Sutra once a day, then all sins will be eliminated, and the ghost officials will not be able to detain you.' From then on, Jia Hui recited the Diamond Sutra and was able to return home when the emperor granted amnesty to the world.
Avoiding Evil
During the Tang Dynasty, Yu Limian passed the imperial examination. During the Yuanhe period (806-820 AD), he failed the examination and was preparing to return home. A monk advised him, 'Young man, if you want to pass the imperial examination, why don't you read the Diamond Sutra?' So he recited it dozens of times every day. When he stayed overnight at Wangqiao, he saw a beautiful woman while taking a walk under the moon. He spoke to her and was lured to a village house. The laughter and noise were very loud. Entering the hall, he saw five or six more beautiful women. Yu Limian suspected they were monsters, so he secretly recited the Diamond Sutra. Suddenly, a strange light came out of his mouth, and the women scattered in fright. He only smelled a fishy odor, which turned out to be the residence of foxes. Everywhere was covered with dense trees, and he didn't know where to go. Soon a white dog appeared, guiding him forward, with light shining from its mouth to illuminate the road, and he reached his original place. After returning home, Yu Limian recited the Diamond Sutra tens of thousands of times.
Subduing a Tiger

The robbers looked at each other, surprised. They stopped and asked him the reason. Li Wu replied, 'I have a Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra) hidden on me, and I think it's divine power protecting me.' The robbers opened his bag and found the scripture. The robbers instead gave Li Wu a lot of money, asking him to give them the scripture, and vowed never to be thieves again.
Escaping Disaster
During the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD), Lu Yantong, the magistrate of Wu Lao County, recited ten volumes of the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra) every day. Li Mi rebelled and broke through the city. A group of robbers chased after him with swords, trying to kill him. There was a deep ravine in front of him. The robbers approached, and Lu Yantong jumped into the ravine. In the air, he saw a Vajra deity who caught Lu Yantong's arm with his hand and placed him on a stone, without any injury. The deity said, 'Your recitation of the scriptures has moved me, and I have come to save you.' Therefore, he was able to save his life and return home. He took up a pen and wrote a verse, bathed in fragrant water, and passed away peacefully.
During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), there was a wealthy merchant who often recited the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra) and always carried the scripture with him. He often traded in foreign countries. One night, he stayed on an island. Other merchants coveted his wealth, killed him, put him in a large cage, added huge stones, and sank him into the sea along with the scripture. The island where he was sunk happened to be a monastery. The monks in the monastery heard the sound of reciting scriptures from the seabed every night, and they felt very strange. So they ordered a good swimmer to dive into the water to find out. They found an old man reading scriptures in a cage. So they pulled him up. The monks asked him the reason, and the old man said, 'I was killed and sunk into the sea. I didn't know I was in a cage. Suddenly, I felt like I was in a palace, and people often brought me food and drink, and I was comfortable and at ease.' When everyone heard this, they all praised and admired him. So he shaved his head and became a monk, living in the monastery on the island.

Lu Kangcheng looked at them, and there were only names on them, nothing else. The subordinate said, 'They are all people who will die by weapons next year.' Lu Kangcheng asked, 'Am I among them?' The subordinate said, 'Yes.' Lu Kangcheng was very frightened and said, 'Since you are a former subordinate, can you save me?' The subordinate said, 'I have come specifically to tell you that only the Diamond Sutra (Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra) can be relied upon.' After saying that, he disappeared. Lu Kangcheng then resolved to read the scriptures, reciting them dozens of times every day. The following year, Zhu Ci rebelled and appointed Lu Kangcheng as a censor.

Chi Ci was furious and ordered soldiers to surround Kang Cheng and shoot arrows at him. Kang Cheng silently recited the Diamond Sutra, and the arrows could not harm him. Chi Ci said, 'Scholars use loyalty and trustworthiness as armor; it is indeed believable!' So he released him. Kang Cheng then entered Zhongnan Mountain and did not serve as an official again.
Xiang Lanzhai (person's name), while serving as an inspector, claimed that in the spring of the Bingchen year (1616), he dreamed of visiting the Supreme and Invincible Great King. He saw tens of thousands of people with bloodstains and pale faces. The king said, 'These people are from the two Easts (referring to Shandong and Liaodong); remember them.' After waking up, he advised people to abstain from meat and eat vegetarian food, recite the Buddha's name, and chant the Diamond Sutra to avoid the ravages of war and escape suffering after death. Soon after, a great famine occurred in several prefectures of Shandong, and the death toll was almost exhaustive. Meanwhile, the war in Liaodong also completely failed, and the death toll was even greater. The 'two Easts' mentioned in the dream were thus verified. Xiang Lanzhai devoutly recited the Diamond Sutra and never stopped for a single day.
Returning to Life

He revived three days later. Initially, he saw two ghosts chasing him to a city, which was extremely stern. After entering the city and walking four or five li, he saw palaces and ceremonial guards. King Yama was sitting in the main hall, with countless monks, Taoists, and foreigners. A messenger entered to report, and Murong Wence was behind him. King Yama asked them one by one about their good and evil deeds during their lifetime, and then had them stand separately to the east and west. Then, Murong Wence's name was called, and he was asked, 'What good deeds have you done?' He replied, 'Since childhood, I have recited the Diamond Sutra.' King Yama put his palms together and praised, 'The merit is great; let him return to life for now.'
During the Tang Dynasty, the monk Fazheng (person's name) of Kaiyuan Temple in Jiangling recited the Diamond Sutra three times seven (twenty-one) times a day. He replied, 'I often recite the Diamond Sutra.' So King Yama bowed and invited him to the hall, ascended the embroidered seat, and recited the Diamond Sutra. The guards all put their palms together, and those being punished below the steps all stopped. After the recitation was finished, King Yama sent an official to lead him back. King Yama walked down the steps to see him off, saying, 'Superior person, you can live for another thirty years in the human world; do not stop reading and reciting the Diamond Sutra.' Renqin was no different from his father, relying on wealth to bully others, slaughtering at will. Before the age of thirty, he suddenly fell seriously ill, seeing many beings demanding his life. After death, he met Yama (King of Hell). Yama said, 'In your previous life, you cultivated goodness, so in this life you enjoy blessings. In this life, you indulged in killing, not understanding cause and effect.' He ordered the jailers to drive him to the Mountain of Knives and Tree of Swords hells to repay the lives of the beings he had killed. Renqin pleaded, 'When I was alive, although I did not read scriptures or do good deeds, I once spent money to have a copy of the Diamond Sutra made and gave it to the monk Shenjing of Anguo Temple to uphold. This monk has passed away; shouldn't there be some reward?' After a moment, Shenjing, holding the Diamond Sutra, came before the King and said that Renqin had donated the scripture and had prajna (wisdom) merit and wished to release his soul. The King immediately put his palms together and released Renqin to return to life. After Renqin revived, he printed and distributed one hundred copies of the Lotus Sutra and one thousand copies of the Diamond Sutra, held a grand Water and Land Dharma Assembly, and performed various meritorious deeds. Suddenly, he dreamed of his deceased father saying, 'I am suffering immeasurable pain in hell, but now, because of your practice, relying on the power of the Buddha, I and the souls of my ancestors for seven generations have all been reborn in the heavens.'

【English Translation】 English version: The king of Bi praised him, saying, 'Reciting it three thousand times will extend your life by fifteen years.' Then he released him. During the Tianbao era (742-756 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, there was a judge named Zhang, whose name has been lost, who was sent on a mission to Huainan. As he was about to cross the Huai River, a man in a yellow shirt ran up from behind, asking for a ride. The boatman wanted to push him away, but Judge Zhang said, 'No. What difficulty is there in carrying one commoner across the Huai River?' Seeing that the man in the yellow shirt was hungry, he fed him with leftover food. The man thanked him with shame. After crossing the river, they parted ways. A moment later, he arrived at the post station, and the man was already at the door. Judge Zhang disliked him in his heart, saying, 'I just ferried you across the river, why have you come again?' The man replied, 'I want to discuss something with the judge, which cannot be heard by those around you.' Judge Zhang dismissed those around him, and the man said, 'I am ordered to take you, to drown you in the Huai River. Fortunately, I received your kindness, so it can only be delayed for one day.' Judge Zhang prostrated himself on the ground, begging for help. The man replied, 'If you can recite the 'Life-Extending Sutra' a thousand times within a day, you may still extend your life.' After speaking, he left. When he reached the door, he turned back and said, 'Do you know the 'Life-Extending Sutra'? It is the 'Diamond Sutra' in the human world.' Judge Zhang said, 'It is already late today, how can I recite a thousand times?' The man replied, 'As long as people recite it, it is fine.' Judge Zhang then summoned dozens of people from his office to recite together. By evening, they had indeed finished reciting a thousand times. The ghost came again, saying, 'The judge has been spared from death, but must pay a visit to the King of the Underworld.' The crowd saw Judge Zhang, following the yellow-shirted official together. Judge Zhang saw the King of the Underworld, who said that reciting the sutras should add ten years to his lifespan, and released him to be reborn. Avoiding Livestock Rebirth During the Song Dynasty, there was a Jinshi (successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations) named Zhu in Suzhou Prefecture, who only studied for the imperial examinations and did not understand Buddhism. One day, he was out for a walk and arrived at Tiger Hill Temple, where he encountered Chan Master Foyin lecturing on the 'Diamond Sutra', explaining the four-line verse 'All conditioned phenomena' and explaining the general meaning of Buddhism to him. Jinshi Zhu was very happy to hear this, thinking that he had never heard such Buddhist teachings before. He went home for a nap and dreamed of a ghost official, escorting five criminals, with Jinshi Zhu following behind. After walking about a mile, they arrived at a main street, entered an alley, and a blue cloth curtain hung at the door of a house. The ghost official lifted the curtain, took the criminals in, and went to the kitchen. There was soup in a bucket on the stove, and the criminals all drank it. Jinshi Zhu also felt thirsty and was about to drink when the ghost official shouted:

The next day, he went to the streets and alleys and found a house that was no different from the scene in his dream. He knocked on the door, and the owner of the house, seeing the Jinshi (a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations) arrive, hurriedly greeted him. Zhu asked what was going on in the kitchen just now. The owner said that there were six puppies in the kitchen, one of whom had died. Zhu was shocked and sweating profusely. He said to himself, 'If it weren't for the power of hearing the Buddha's Dharma, I would almost have been reborn as a dog.' Therefore, he insisted on reciting the Diamond Sutra, without interruption in the cold or heat, and lived to be eighty-nine years old. On the fifteenth day of August, he invited teachers and friends to see him off, ascended to the treetops in the back garden, said four lines of verse, and bid farewell to everyone, passing away peacefully while standing. The verse said: 'Zhu Gong, eighty-nine years old, split the void with both hands, stepped on white clouds with both feet, and passed away east of the Bodhi tree.' Zou E (person's name), lived in Kunshan, and his family had a good reputation for generations. Zou E's younger brother, Zou Zhen (person's name), did not do good deeds. One day, he saw his brother inviting a monk to recite the Diamond Sutra, and when he heard the fifteenth section, he also put his palms together and praised, saying, 'Our Confucianism has never had such words.' Later, he contracted a seasonal illness and became unconscious. For half a month, only his chest was still warm. He suddenly got up from the bed and told his family, 'I was outside Changmen, working as a cow for Li Zuofang's family, all white. I saw the Vajra deity saying, 'This person has heard several sections of the Diamond Sutra, why would he fall into this category?' He struck the cow's head with a precious pestle and woke up, feeling a slight pain in the top of his head. Later, he visited that family, and a white calf had just been born and died.

One night, an old man dreamed of twelve men and women, bowing down in the hall and saying, 'Thanks to your chanting of the scriptures, we have all been able to escape the bodies of birds and animals, so we have come to thank you.' The old man woke up, thinking of the twelve eggs, took them out and felt they were very light, opened them and they were all empty shells. So he called everyone to look at them, and they were all like this when opened. The creatures born from eggs were able to be liberated, it's truly miraculous! All twelve categories of beings are like this. The merit of reciting scriptures is truly inconceivable.
Aiding the Deceased
During the Jiajing (1522-1566) and Longqing (1567-1572) periods, the great general Qi Jiguang usually recited the Diamond Sutra. When he was stationed in Yue, a dead soldier appeared in a dream and said, 'Tomorrow, please have my wife visit you and ask you to recite a volume of the Diamond Sutra to help me on my path in the underworld.' Qi Jiguang woke up and warned the gatekeepers not to stop any women who came. Soon enough, a woman came, weeping and begging to see him, so he let her in, just as in the dream. Qi Jiguang agreed to her request. The next day he recited the sutra, and that night he dreamed of the soldier saying, 'Thank you for your great kindness, but I only received half the merit, because the word 'useless' was mixed in.' Qi Jiguang thought about the reason, probably because when he was reciting the sutra, his wife sent a maid to bring tea cakes, and Qi Jiguang saw her from afar and waved her away, although he didn't say it, he was thinking 'useless'. So he sincerely closed the door and recited the sutra again. After he finished reciting, that night the soldier bowed his head in the dream and said, 'I have been liberated.'
In Fengqiao, Suzhou, Sheng Zaide studied scriptures with the lecturer Xuanming. In the early Wanli (1573-1620) period, he fell ill and went to the underworld, where he was accused by the vengeful ghost Sheng Zhihua to the city god, and was arrested for questioning. Sheng Zaide was righteous and was allowed to see the hells and then released back to the world. After one night he died again, and saw the city god descending the steps and instructing him, 'I was a native of Jingzhou in my previous life, surnamed Cao. Since ascending to the divine ranks, my mother, Zhang Taijun, has been reincarnated three times, all as women and without children. If you can ask Master Xuanming to sincerely recite the Diamond Sutra and the 'Moon Above Woman Sutra', five hundred times each, to save my mother and have her reborn as a man.' The city god's instructions were very earnest. After Sheng Zaide was reborn, he respectfully invited Xuanming, and after reciting the full number of scriptures, he reported it.

【English Translation】 English version: She pleaded: 'When I was alive, I killed many living beings. Every time crabs were available, I would buy them to make 'drunken crabs' and eat them at will. After death, Yama (閻君, Yan Jun, the King of Hell) sent someone to escort me to the Crab Mountain Hell, where a group of crabs pinched my eyes, causing me to bleed all over my body, and I suffered day and night. Moreover, in my lifetime, I wasted wine and leftover food. The underworld tallied that I wasted five shi, nine dou, seven sheng, and five he (石,鬥,升,合, units of volume) of food. Therefore, my lifespan was reduced by twelve years, and I had to endure the suffering of the Three Seven Great Hells. Later, a jailer came to supervise me in selling wine, waiting for the impermanence ghost (無常鬼, Wuchang Gui, a type of ghost) to chase after the departed soul. Then, they would draw blood from my body to compensate for the five shi, nine dou, seven sheng, and five he of wine sold, and I must replenish the original amount before suffering further in hell. Now that I hear my husband has returned in glory, I have come to plead. The underworld deeply respects the merit of writing the Diamond Sutra, and I beg that my dowry be sold to have seven copies of the sutra written for me. With the merit of this Prajna (般若, wisdom), I can be saved from the suffering of hell.' After her husband returned home, he took out money to hire monks to copy the sutra. Just after completing two copies, one day he prepared offerings to visit his wife's grave. When he arrived at the tomb, he suddenly saw an old man who said, 'Your wife, thanks to the merit of having the sutra copied, was approved by Yama yesterday at noon and has ascended to the heavens.' After saying this, he disappeared.
Ascension to Heaven
Zhao Wenxin of Suichuan (遂川, a place name) died suddenly in the first year of the Zhenguan (貞觀) era (627 AD), and revived three days later. He said himself: 'When I first died, I was driven by officials and went to Yama's place with ten companions. Among them was a monk, and Yama first asked him, 'What merits did you cultivate when you were alive?' The monk replied, 'I recited the Diamond Sutra.' When Yama heard this, he immediately stood up in surprise, put his palms together, and praised, 'Excellent, excellent. If you recite Prajna (般若, wisdom), you should ascend to heaven, how could you have mistakenly come here?' Before he finished speaking, heavenly robes descended and guided the monk to ascend to heaven.' After Zhao Wenxin revived, he described this matter in detail.
During the Kaiyuan (開元) era (713-741 AD), there was a Mr. Lu who lived in Hua Zhou (滑州, a place name). He often recited the Diamond Sutra. One day, while sitting, he saw two men in yellow robes enter the door. Mr. Lu asked who they were. They replied, 'We are the Lizheng (里正, local officials), and we are here to arrest you with an official document.' Mr. Lu was surprised, so he asked to see the document. He saw the words 'Wei County (衛縣, a place name)' written on the seal, so he opened it. The writing was garbled.

【English Translation】 English version: It did not resemble human writing. He felt strange and questioned the officer. The officer said, 'I am under orders to pursue, but I do not know why.' Soon he saw a horse below the steps and had no choice but to mount it. Looking back, he saw his corpse on the bed and felt disgusted. In his haste, he did not realize he was dead. He then saw the horse leave, not through the gate, but along the wall. He was shocked and wept, finally realizing he was dead and regretting that he could not bid farewell to his mother and sisters. After traveling about several dozen li, he arrived at a city, which was very magnificent. He asked what city this was, and the officer said it was a kingdom. Entering the city, they passed a courtyard. He asked what courtyard this was, and the officer said it was the courtyard of the Imperial Censor-in-chief. He then asked the Censor-in-chief's name, and was told it was Li Mou. Lu was overjoyed, saying, 'This is my cousin.' He asked the officer to present his card. After a moment, his cousin came out to meet him, very pleased, and they recounted their past. The Censor-in-chief said, 'Your recitation of the scriptures has accumulated much merit, mainly because the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra) is the marrow of the sacred teachings, and its merit is inconceivable.' When Lu first entered the courtyard, he saw dozens of people all wearing official robes, but most of them were tied in nets, some without clothes, some with bare heads. Lu asked who these people were, and was told they were officials from the yang world, and those in the nets had committed serious sins. 'If you were to preach the Dharma for them once, all who hear it would ascend to heaven.' So they brought a high seat and had Lu ascend it to recite the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra). Some of those in the nets had already poked their heads out, and by the halfway point, all had emerged from the ground, some wearing wide-sleeved robes, some riding in carriages and driving clouds. When the recitation was finished, all those who were to be reborn had departed. When he went to pay respects to the king, the king called him a Dharma Master and showed him great respect. The king said, 'Your merit is inconceivable and cannot be calculated.' He ordered the officer to send him back. When he arrived home, he saw his family weeping with disheveled hair, and his corpse lying on the ground. He felt very sad. After a moment, a maid entered from the courtyard. The officer had her follow him up the steps. When she reached the front, his soul suddenly entered her body, and she came back to life.
Returning West
Yan Jiang was a leather worker from Xiangcheng. In middle age, he abandoned his trade and took on the task of carrying vegetarian meals at a Buddhist temple. On the road, he devoted himself to reciting the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra) and continuously chanting the name of Amitabha Buddha (Amitābha). When he was over sixty years old, he suddenly stopped eating grains and only drank water for a month. Then he said, 'I shall depart on such and such day, at such and such time.' When the time came, he bathed, changed his clothes, and sat in the lotus position.

【English Translation】 English version: After cremation, several portions of Śarīra (relics) were obtained. His tongue was as hard as metal and stone, and it made a sound when struck. This event occurred in the thirteenth year of the Zhengde reign (1518) of the Ming Dynasty.
There was a butcher in Huzhou named Lu, who was twenty-three years old. He saw a wandering monk in front of his door, who claimed to be there to enlighten those with affinity. Lu did not understand. The monk said, 'You have slaughtered countless pigs and sheep, why not change your profession?' Lu said, 'I inherited the family business and cannot abandon it.' The monk said, 'If you do not change, you will surely fall into this category in future lives and still be slaughtered by them, with karmic retribution without end. I see that you have good roots from past lives, so you should recite the Lotus Sūtra (Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra) and the Diamond Sūtra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra) early. If you wholeheartedly uphold them, you can eliminate evil karma and increase blessings and goodness.' After the monk finished speaking, he disappeared. Lu then awakened and immediately hired craftsmen to paint a scroll of Amitābha Buddha, Avalokiteśvara (Guānshìyīn Púsà), and Mahāsthāmaprāpta (Dàshìzhì Púsà), which he sincerely worshipped. He steadfastly maintained a vegetarian diet and studied the two sūtras with a teacher. In less than five years, he was able to recite them from memory. Every night, if he was to slaughter the next day, he would burn incense before the Buddha, recite one part of the Lotus Sūtra and one scroll of the Diamond Sūtra, and repent before the Buddha, saying that he would slaughter several pigs and sheep tomorrow, and wished to transfer the merit of reading the sūtras to liberate the slaughtered pigs and sheep, and to be reborn in the Pure Land after this life. He wished to be spared from these karmic debts when he died. He made this a regular practice. Lu felt lighter and healthier. When he was about to die at the age of eighty-one, he invited relatives and friends half a month in advance, saying that he would pass away on the ninth day of the eleventh month, and prepared a simple vegetarian meal to bid farewell. On the appointed day, relatives and friends attended the vegetarian meal. He asked to be bathed and changed, sat upright, and recited: 'For more than sixty years, I specialized in the slaughtering business, holding a knife and secretly cultivating. Today, I attain the path to Bodhi, a lotus flower born in water and fire.' After reciting, he passed away. All his relatives and friends admired and praised him.
In the year of Xinchou (1601) during the Wanli reign, Zhang Ai, a eunuch inside the Shuncheng Gate, upheld the Diamond Sūtra in his later years. When he was about to die, his family instructed him, 'Do not forget the thought of upholding the sūtra.' Zhang Ai understood in his heart, but his mouth could not answer. He saw two people in green clothes escorting him, saying, 'You should be reborn in Shandong.' They traveled as fast as flying, and by noon they had arrived in Shandong, seeing the local mountains

【English Translation】 English version: After the death of my parents, I single-mindedly upheld the Vajra-chedika-prajna-paramita-sutra (金剛經). I was escorted to a palace, and I suspected it was the domain of Dongyue (東嶽, God of Mount Tai), but there were no ox-headed jailers. A person on the throne, wearing a flat-topped crown, ordered a servant to bring me forward. The crowned person stood up and said, 'You are destined to be reborn here.' I replied, 'Throughout my life, I have upheld the Vajra-chedika-prajna-paramita-sutra. I only wish to be reborn in the Pure Land, not to be reincarnated.' The crowned person said, 'Your merit from upholding the sutra is insufficient.' I said, 'I have heard that even ten recitations can lead to rebirth, let alone my upholding the sutra for many years.' The crowned person then turned to two green-robed attendants and said, 'Send him back to continue upholding the sutra. He has been dead for nine days, but his heart is still warm and he has not yet been placed in a coffin.' I then left home and lived in Biyun Temple (碧雲寺) in the Western Hills, dedicating myself to reciting the Vajra-chedika-prajna-paramita-sutra. Eleven years later, one day, I gathered the people and said, 'By the power of upholding the sutra, I am now going to the West.' After bathing and changing clothes, I sat upright and passed away.
During the Xuande (宣德) period (1426-1435) of the Ming Dynasty, Chen Ruxuan (陳入玄), a Taoist priest of Heming Temple (鶴鳴觀) in Western Sichuan, aspired to immortality and prayed for divine instruction. One night, he saw a person in a dream who claimed to be a Vajra Devata (金剛神). The deity said to Chen Ruxuan, 'Go to Mount Min (岷山) and pay respects to the monk Zhirong (智融). He will impart the Dharma to you.' Chen Ruxuan followed the deity's instructions and asked Zhirong, 'I hope to achieve immortality and wish to hear the secret essence.' Zhirong said, 'Have you not seen the Vajra-chedika-prajna-paramita-sutra which says, 'All conditioned dharmas are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows?'' Chen Ruxuan said, 'Since they are like illusions and bubbles, how can one achieve immortality?' Zhirong said, 'If you see all forms as non-forms, then you will see the Tathagata (如來).' He also said, 'That which is not the Tathagata is called the Tathagata.' Upon hearing these words, Chen Ruxuan suddenly awakened and retreated to Huju Rock (虎踞巖) on Mount Wawu (瓦屋山). At the age of ninety-eight, one day, he gathered his neighbors and said, 'I initially aspired to cultivate immortality as a celestial being, but now I am fortunate to have attained the immortality of the Buddha's Dharma. I hope that you all may attain what I have attained.' After speaking, he closed his eyes and passed away.
Zhang Yuan (張元), a fisherman from Haiyan (海鹽), and his younger brother Zhang Zhen (張貞) were returning home at night after casting their nets. When their boat reached Qingsong Pond (青松塘), they saw a strange light on the water's surface, reflecting the stars and moon. Suspecting it was a precious pearl, they dove into the water and retrieved a stone box. The brothers were overjoyed and reverently opened the box at home, finding a volume of the Vajra-chedika-prajna-paramita-sutra written in golden characters. They then enshrined the Vajra-chedika-prajna-paramita-sutra in their family shrine. That night, a golden-armored deity (金甲神) appeared in their dream and said to them, 'In your previous life, you were workers at the lecture hall of Dharma Master Changshui (長水法師).'
【English Translation】 English version: Because of lack of faith, he fell to this state. However, the subtle cause was not completely extinguished, (I) bestow upon you the Great Dharma. You should diligently uphold and recite it. Yuan declined on the grounds that he was illiterate. The spirit made him speak and fed him a pill. The next day, (Yuan) began to recite, as proficiently as if he had practiced for a long time. Yuan told the monk Chuanru of Zhaoqing Temple about this. Chuanru encouraged him to dedicate his merits to the Western Pure Land. After three years, Yuan said to his relatives and friends, 'The lotus throne has appeared.' Then he sat upright and passed away. This happened in the seventh month of the Dingchou year (1577 AD) of the Wanli reign.
Layman Guiyi commented: Rebirth in the Western Pure Land is different from merely being born in the heavens. Because being born in the heavens still does not escape reincarnation, while being reborn in the West means eternal liberation from birth and death.
Why is this said? Reincarnation has six realms: first, the realm of the Devas (gods); second, the realm of humans; third, the realm of Asuras (demigods); fourth, the realm of animals; fifth, the realm of hungry ghosts; sixth, the realm of hells. The birth and death in the six realms continue without ceasing. Enjoying blessings in the heavens, although superior to the human realm, still has a limited lifespan. For example, the Trayastrimsa Heaven (忉利天), Yama Heaven (夜摩天), Tushita Heaven (兜率天), Nirmanarati Heaven (化樂天), etc., have lifespans calculated in thousands of years, with the longest being only a few thousand years. The Paranirmita-vasavartin Heaven (他化自在天), Abhasvara Heaven (光音天), Subhakrtsna Heaven (遍凈天), etc., have lifespans calculated in tens of thousands of years, with the longest being only tens of thousands of years. When the lifespan is exhausted, they still have to be reborn in the Desire Realm, unable to reside in the heavens forever. Therefore, it is said that they have not escaped reincarnation.
As for the Western Pure Land, beyond hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddha lands, there is a world called Sukhavati (極樂). The teaching master there is named Amitabha Buddha (無量壽佛), who is still preaching the Dharma there today. Once reborn in that realm, one will never regress, until one becomes a Buddha. The lifespan of the people there is immeasurable and boundless, beyond what can be known by calculation. The Sutra says that when the heavens and earth are destroyed, this (Pure Land) will not be destroyed. Therefore, it is said to be eternally free from birth and death. Compared to merely being born in the heavens, isn't it vastly different?
Moreover, upholding the Diamond Sutra and practicing the Pure Land Dharma have the same merit. Practicing the Pure Land Dharma and the ultimate goal of Chan practitioners are consistent. Why is this said? Because Chan practice can indeed lead to sudden enlightenment of emptiness and instant Buddhahood, while practicing Pure Land...
