'Lineage, Awakening, Wonderful Path; Clearly Understanding the Original Truth; Expanding the Ancestral Seal; Connecting and Broadening the Lamp of Wisdom; Nature Empty, Dharma Realm; Inheriting and Continuing Glory; Perfect Penetration, Fruition Complete; Blessings and Virtue, Turning the Wheel.'
These are the sixteen words of the lineage verse composed by Chan Master Duanqiao Miaolun, the seventeenth generation of the Linji (Rinzai) school.
'Wisdom-Nature, Wonderful Enlightenment; True Opportunity, Fully Revealed; Broadly Benefiting, Thoroughly Reaching the Source; Corresponding to Cause, Realizing Fruit.'
These are the twenty words of the lineage verse composed by Chan Master Bifeng Xingjin, the nineteenth generation of the Linji (Rinzai) school.
'Nature Empty, Originally Bright and Shining; Mirror Wisdom, Fundamentally Empty and Mysterious; Able to Encompass All Things; Therefore Governing the Great Thousand.'
These are the thirty words of the lineage verse composed by Chan Master Yunyan Fu'ai, the twenty-first generation of the Linji (Rinzai) school.
'Blessings, Virtue, Vast Compassion, Broad; Samantabhadra (Universal Worthy) Awakens to the Path, Accomplished; Benefiting Without Boundaries; Lineage Root, Eternally Flourishing; Wonderful Enlightenment, Constantly Full; Self-Nature, Realizing Perfect Harmony.'
These are the twenty words of the lineage verse composed by Chan Master Xuefeng Zuding of Minzhong, the twenty-second generation of the Linji (Rinzai) school (and the fifteenth generation of the Tiantai school).
'Ancestral Path, Precepts, Samadhi (Concentration), Lineage; Square, Broad, Correct, Perfect Penetration; Practice Transcends Clear Actuality; Thoroughly Understanding, Realizing Empty Space.'
Chan Master Huanyou Zhengchuan of Longchi (and Miyun Tianyin) tonsured Yuan (Wuxiu) Chan Master, who also used this lineage verse to transmit the Dharma. Now (Tiantong Qingshan), later sages all use the above lineage verse to transmit the Dharma, following the intention of Longchi.
Chan Master Longchi further continued the verse with twenty words following the word 'Empty'.

'Miao' (Subtle) continues to widely transmit the eye of the true Dharma, 'Xing' (Flourishing) arises from 'Jianjue' (Mirror-like Awareness), celebrating 'Weichang' (Flourishing and Prosperous), 'Che' (Thorough) can seal the 'Zong' (Doctrine), perfecting the Buddha fruit, 'Shaolong' (Eminently Promote) the ancestral path, continuing the linked fragrance.
The lineage verse derived from the 25th generation of the Linji (Rinzai) school, Dongming Haizhou Yongci Zen Master, consists of 112 characters.
'Pu' (Universal), 'Yong' (Eternal), 'Zhi' (Wisdom), 'Guang' (Vast), 'Hong' (Great), 'Sheng' (Victorious), 'De' (Virtue), 'Jing' (Pure), 'Hui' (Wisdom), 'Yuan' (Perfect), 'Ming' (Bright), 'Zhengfa' (True Dharma) flourishes, 'Xing' (Arises), 'Xinghai' (Ocean of Nature) is clear, revealing the 'Xianmiyin' (Esoteric Seal), 'Dacheng' (Mahayana) wonderful path, 'Wuxindeng' (Enlightenment of the Mind Lamp), Buddha's grace is vast and full, its fragrance flows far, the ancestral practice transcends the sect, continuing the deep succession, precepts and samadhi are firm and thorough in meaning, rules are carefully guarded and always new, aiding goodness, prosperity arises because the root is reached, auspiciousness flourishes and transmission increases again, meritorious deeds are silent and illuminating, merging with the true realm, the precious mirror hangs high, the essence and function are intimate, benefiting spiritual texts, spreading beautiful scenery, faithfully holding the profound records, aiding the precious times, clearly without limit, emptying all illusions, the Bodhi tree blooms, the fruit is naturally fragrant.
Currently, the families under Ruo'an Tongwen Zen Master have all changed from the character 'Kong' (Emptiness) to start with the character 'Qing' (Purity) of this lineage verse.
The lineage verse derived from the 25th generation of the Linji (Rinzai) school (7th generation under Bifeng), Tukong Zhiban Zen Master, consists of 16 characters.
'Zhihui' (Wisdom), 'Qingjing' (Purity), 'Daode' (Morality), 'Yuanming' (Perfection), 'Zhenru' (Suchness), 'Xinghai' (Nature of the Ocean), 'Jizhao' (Silent Illumination), 'Putong' (Universal).
Mount Wutai, Mount Emei, and the front temple of Mount Putuo continue to derive 32 characters.
'Xinyuan' (Source of Mind) widely continues, 'Benjue' (Original Enlightenment) flourishes, 'Nengren' (Sakyamuni) sacred fruit, constantly evolves broadly, only transmits the Dharma seal, realization and enlightenment converge, uphold precepts and samadhi, eternally commemorate the ancestors.
The rear temple of Mount Putuo continues to derive 48 characters from the 'Tong' (Through) character lineage under Tukong.
'Zhanran' (Serene) Dharma realm, 'Fangguang' (Square and Vast) is solemn and vast, 'Miman' (Pervading) original enlightenment, 'Liaowu' (Clearly Understanding) the mind's doctrine, only the spirit is vast and thorough, essence and function are completely prosperous, hearing, thinking, cultivating, and learning, cessation and contemplation are constantly merging, transmitting and holding the wonderful principle, continuing the ancient virtuous public, faith, understanding, practice, and realization, the moon is bright in the sky.
The lineage verse derived from the 25th generation of the Linji (Rinzai) school (7th generation under Bifeng), Zhishèng Zen Master of Mount Yueshan in Mount Wutai, consists of 40 characters.

The 37th generation of the Linji School (Dharma successor of Zen Master Chongru), Zen Master Huilin Fo□ residing at Yaowang Puji Temple, composed a lineage poem of sixty characters:
'Buddha's principles, great faith, compassion, universally liberate all equally, the origin,' 'Dharma spreads, upholding pure precepts, the mind awakens, manifesting true Zen,' 'Wisdom sea, clear and manifest, wisdom's joy, widely illuminates the border,' 'Brightly the same as the path of the capable and benevolent, sages and worthies initiate the natural,' 'Mysterious emptiness becomes wonderful meaning, sincere solemnity eternally continues the transmission,' 'Blessing affinity always luxuriant and beautiful, flowers fragrant, the fruit complete and round.'
The 37th generation of the Linji School (the 7th generation of the Baoren School), Zen Master Dao Kai Lizheng of Taiping Temple in Jixi, Anhui, separately composed a lineage poem of fifty-six characters:
'The Western national style points to real power, clarifying the mind and seeing the nature, instantly transcending the worthy,' 'The Bodhi fruit is full in the Huazang realm, the sacred truth is true, now and anciently suspended,' 'Diligently cultivate precepts and rules, participate in wonderful principles, the light of wisdom brightly illuminates, manifesting the entire sky,' 'The spiritual mechanism awakens thoroughly to the flower-picking purpose, the orthodox Dharma flows fragrant, continuing with those who have affinity.'
The 37th generation of the Linji School (the 7th generation of the Baoren School), Zen Master Jin'an Liaogen of Juehai Temple in Jiaxing, Zhejiang, following the previous 'empty' character, continued with twenty characters (the first line uses the Longchi ancestral lineage):
'The nature of awakening is originally always still (continuing and changing three lines of characters), the principle of capable benevolence naturally penetrates,' 'Mind transmission participates in wonderful truths, eternally virtue is only revered.'

Attaining the Dao (path), understanding truth, measuring all things, clarifying the subtle, surpassing ancestors, correct enlightenment, transcending subtle teachings. Great function, the light of wisdom is complete and flawless, the sound of the stone chime is clear and manifest, the ocean of awareness, continuing the source of the Linji school. Transmitting and upholding the mind-seal of the Buddha, widely propagating and expounding in the Dharma realm.
The 40th generation of the Linji school, Chan Master Dingzong Zhengou of Baiyi Temple in Hangzhou, separately evolved a 56-character generation poem.
Brightness like the sun shining in the sky, illuminating ten thousand miles, mountains, rivers, earth, and the entire universe (Qiankun). The style of the school, the eternal lifeline, the source and root lies here, now obtaining peace and harmony, transmitting and continuing the lamp. Only hoping for virtuous descendants, with noble character, surpassing the towering old ancestral temple. Accomplishing thus, reorganizing anew, the creations of past generations are all as beautiful as lotuses.
The 40th generation of the Linji school (9th generation of Fuyan Temple), Chan Master Yunkai Tianxia of Zhinan Temple in Haichang, separately evolved a 24-character generation poem.
Heaven-sent affinity, bright virtue, establishing the Dao, revitalizing the principles, upright and dignified. Generational order, lasting long, understanding the same, pure wisdom, merit fulfilled, auspiciousness and good fortune.
The 41st generation of the Linji school, Chan Master Jiufeng Kongheng of Xianlin Temple in Hangzhou, starting from the character 『Kong』 (空), continued to evolve a 20-character generation poem.
With the goodness of the Dharma, universally propagate the Buddha-mind, the wisdom of awakening, illuminates the subtlety of emptiness, thoughtful and wise, sincere and far-sighted. The self-nature is pure, accumulating merit and ability.
The 33rd generation of the Linji school (9th generation of Etou Temple), Chan Master Ruomei Zhiming of Kaixian Temple on Mount Lu, evolved a 16-character generation poem.

'Ancestor-awakening, sect-purity, practice-profound, constantly embracing precepts, samadhi, and wisdom, perfectly illuminating, supernatural powers, Dharma-nature, True Thusness sea, eternally flourishing, seeing great peace.' (Following) 'A solitary moon in the empty sky reflects in a thousand rivers, illuminating the world, spreading light, transforming the sun's days to be long, recognizing the original face, the sect's style will eternally flourish.'
Zen Master Baoci Huiliang (location unknown) created a sixteen-character lineage verse:
'Jiyuan (vast source) is boundless, the nature of awakening is clear and complete, the sea-seal emits light, all streams flow towards the source.'
Zen Master Wuhuan Xingcong (location unknown) created a forty-eight-character lineage verse:
'Nature-wisdom, subtle-understanding, the true opportunity is fully revealed, extensively penetrating the Jiyuan (vast source), the symbol conforms to the cause, the contract conforms to the effect, transmitting the Buddha's mind-seal, directly expounding the supreme vehicle, the sect magnifies the holy path, learning surpasses precepts and samadhi, arising from Mount Song, the ancestral lamp shines universally, illuminating the present and glorifying the past, completely clarifying the sudden teaching.'
Zen Master Jieyai Juexiu (location unknown) created a thirty-two-character lineage verse:
'Awakened wisdom is uniquely manifested, spiritual fortune flourishes, revealing the moon of precepts, thoroughly understanding the light of the mind, compassionate connections should be fulfilled, the vows of fruition are increasingly fragrant, eternally flourishing the Ji lineage, the orthodox lineage is deep and long.'
○ The Lineage Verse of the Weiyang School
'Baizhang, Weishan You (Lingyou), Yangshan Ji (Huiji) and Yong, Banana Qing (Huiqing) is clear and thorough, five generations are within it.'
From the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, it was transmitted to Baizhang Huaihai. Baizhang Huaihai transmitted to Weishan Lingyou. Weishan Lingyou transmitted to Yangshan Huiji. Later generations thus established the Weiyang School. The lineage verse evolved into twenty characters (unknown from which generation it started).
'Sect-blessing, Dharma-virtue-wisdom, Samantabhadra's profound vows and practices, Manjushri's vast wisdom, accomplishing equal and right awakening, illuminating.'
Yangshan Huiji was the sixth generation under the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, and Guifeng Zongmi was the tenth generation branching out from the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. It is unknown why this lineage is similar to the later Guifeng Zongmi lineage.

Chan Master Dizang Guichen (地藏桂琛) transmitted to Chan Master Fayan Wenyi (法眼文益). Later generations established the Fayan School (法眼宗).
The twentieth-generation verse composed by Cuiyan Siyuan Zuguan (翠巖嗣元祖光) of the sixth generation of the Fayan School:
'Ancestral wisdom understands the original truth, the Dharma nature is always prosperous, Samadhi and wisdom are vast and perfect, the sea of enlightenment is a mysterious and pure seal.'
Later, someone unknown continued to compose twenty characters:
'The Buddha and the heavens communicate with the supreme treasure, all the saints inherit this mandate, together boarding the Prajna boat, vowing to liberate all sentient beings.'
○ Lineage of the Tianhuang School (天皇宗)
From the Sixth Patriarch Huineng (慧能), the Dharma was transmitted for four generations to Chan Master Tianhuang Daowu (天皇道悟). Chan Master Tianhuang Daowu (天皇道悟) transmitted for five generations to Chan Master Shengshou Jingyan (聖壽凈嚴). He composed a sixty-four character verse. Later generations established the Shengshou School (聖壽宗) because of this, but it is not included in the Five Houses.

○ Tiantai (天臺) Teachings and Contemplation
From the Venerable Huiwen (慧文) of the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577), who attained enlightenment through contemplating the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa (大智度論) (Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom). He transmitted the teachings to the Venerable Huisi (慧思). Huisi transmitted the contemplation to the Great Master Zhiyi (智顗) of Tiantai. This established the Tiantai teachings and contemplation. Sixty-four characters were developed to represent the lineage.
Wisdom, awareness, and complete understanding; the Dharma-nature (法性) is profound and subtle; clear understanding, contemplation, and cultivation. Able to greatly promote the ancestral path; the aspiration is vast, the precepts are pure; continuing the lineage and propagating the teachings. Vows and practices are profound; the light of stillness universally illuminates; shining brilliantly from ancient times to the present. Illuminating the entire world; auspiciousness pervades the sahā world (沙界); Tiantai is the designation. The Buddha transmits the mind-seal; universally repaying the four kinds of kindness; for generations, eternally true. Extracting and elaborating on scriptures and commentaries.
From Zhiyi (智顗) down through twenty-six generations, the Great Master Zhenjue (真覺) of Baisong (百松) Monastery on Gaoming (高明) Mountain developed sixty-four characters to represent the lineage.
Truly transmitting and rightly receiving; the spiritual mountain's (靈岳) mind-essence; the One Vehicle's (一乘) sudden contemplation. Affirming the past and present; when thoughts arise, there is stillness; cultivating the nature, clear illumination. Such wisdom and virtue; the substance is originally profound and subtle; conditioned arising of phenomena. Principle and phenomena are emptiness; equally named as existence; the Middle Way (中道) is perfectly harmonious. Purity is universal; responsive connection is constant; the wisdom of fruition is of great use. The real characteristic is eternally fragrant.
The Old Ancestor Baisong (百松) further developed a verse of sixty-four characters to represent the practice, such as '(Truly transmitting and rightly receiving, greatly teaching and elaborating),' and established a name.
Greatly teaching and elaborating; the ancestral virtue is vast; establishing the essential purpose. The subject and object are extinguished and unified; when merit is accomplished, the truth appears; understanding and reaching, then there is peace. The myriad phenomena appear like the ocean; who distinguishes between two and three? Entering through the initial gate of enlightenment. Transforming the Dharma is then practiced; benefiting oneself and others; thoroughly revealing and illuminating. The source is deep, the stream is far; eternally propagating the guiding principles; for hundreds and thousands of generations. Constantly acting as a boat and raft.
Baisong (百松) transmitted to Wujin Deng (無盡燈). Deng (燈) transmitted to Great Master Ouyi Zhixu (蕅益智旭) of Lingfeng (靈峰), establishing the Lingfeng (靈峰) School. He opened the Pure Land (凈土) Dharma Gate. Forty characters were developed to represent the lineage.
Wisdom, purity, true thusness practice; fully utilizing the nature to initiate wondrous cultivation; converging the branches and rivers to cease. Returning to the source, the sea of awakening is complete; upholding faith, cultivating causes, and increasing abundance; vast vows uplift the predecessors.

○ Huayan Xianshou School
From the early Tang Dynasty (618-907), Emperor Shishun of the Du family attained enlightenment by reading the Avatamsaka Sutra (Huayan Jing). He transmitted the teachings to Great Master Yunhua, who then transmitted them to Dharma Master Xianshou, making him the first generation of the Xianshou School. Xianshou transmitted to National Teacher Qingliang Chengguan. Qingliang transmitted to Great Master Guifeng Zongmi, making him the third generation. The lineage uses a twenty-character generation poem:
Zong Fu Fa De Yi, Pu Xian Xing Yuan Shen, Wen Shu Guang Da Zhi,
Cheng Deng Zheng Jue Guo.

'Tranquility, precepts, origin, constancy, concentration; faith, principle, subtlety, permanence, harmony; from hearing, cultivate blessings and wisdom; inherit and promote the Buddha's and patriarchs' mind.'

'Great wisdom, virtue, courage, and strength; contemplate and illuminate all dharmas thoroughly; the fundamental nature pervades the realms of dust; responding and manifesting in the Linji (Rinzai) sect.'
Vinaya Master Fuyue of the Rushi Mountain branch in Macheng, Hubei, also continued to evolve twenty characters under the 'mind' character of the previous lineage.
'The Zen lamp illuminates the original enlightenment; the spiritual source is eternally prosperous; the Dharma clouds obscure the great earth; the sun of wisdom shines brightly and extensively.'
Vinaya Master Sanmei's Dharma (generation of Sun Yijie Yushu) Vinaya Master, separated from Mount Hua and resided in Zhaoging Temple in Hangzhou. Starting from the character 'du (reading)', he differentiated and evolved forty characters.
'Reading brings great blessings and virtue; upholding precepts and concentration is the true method; wisdom blossoms and opens the mind-ground; spiritual light illuminates the past and present; thousands of flowers share the same vein; all good deeds ultimately return to the cause; instantly transcend the position of Buddha and patriarchs; forever continue to transmit the lamp.'

Dharma Master Dalu of the Golden Terrace of the Buddha's Sun evolved thirty-two characters.
'The great path is the mind-essence; concentration and wisdom are perfectly complete; teaching and contemplation are of one school; suchness is the true reality; this is called the ultimate principle; the three realms are only consciousness; sudden, gradual, biased, and complete; do not be opinionated, stubborn, or insistent.'
Zen Master Bian Shang Jie Rong evolved twenty-four characters.
'Precepts originate from Tiantong, transmitting virtue; transformation extends upwards, transmitting the lamp; greatly expand the light, universally illuminating; all depends on the descendants standing in the snow.'
Monk Wunian of Jiufeng in Wuchang evolved sixty-four characters.
'Compassionate light shines everywhere; reaching the root, self is empty; cessation and contemplation are practiced together; seeing the self-nature Buddha; the three paths extend like rocks; interlock and harmonize secrets; thoroughly penetrate the source of Dharma; ultimately without action; from the substance, arise function; after the fruit, bestow the cause; hidden and manifest are both included; transformation and manifestation are equal; great vow.'

The forty characters derived by Baogai Temple in Huanggang: 'Originally possessing wisdom, goodness, and Dharma, because of proof and enlightenment, still because of cause, since ancient and modern times, myriad generations will forever flourish, transmitting the wisdom of the Thus Come One, widely bestowing the merit of saving the world, fully understanding the true meaning, principle and matter are all perfectly harmonious.'
The twenty characters derived by the Peak of Goose Lake: 'Enlightenment of the origin achieves equal wonder, one should cultivate precepts, concentration, and rules, fundamentally following the reality of fixed principles, ancient generations' wisdom will flourish from this.'
The forty characters derived by Dawu Mountain: 'The ancestral Way clarifies the sect's orthodoxy, precepts, concentration, blessings, and wisdom are complete, the wonderful nature is like the sea of true thusness, compassion and relief are widely and greatly transmitted, the mind is clever and greatly enlightened, righteousness prevails and principle is comprehensive, if asked about the essence within the mystery, the bright moon shines in the vast sky.'
